LeBron Confident, Defiant

The King’s ready for Game 6.

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The world went a little crazy yesterday with the reaction to LeBron-calypse that took place in Cleveland on Tuesday night during Game 5. With the Cavs’ season on the line in Boston tonight, James would like for everyone to calm the hell down.

Questions and all sorts of theories are swirling around LBJ’s health, and of course, the team’s unity under Mike Brown’s leadership.

According to the guy under the harshest glare, though, there’s nothing to worry about.

The Boston Globe has the quotes:

“I’m going to try to use as much energy as I can,’’ James said. “If I have to play 48 minutes, then so be it. I better get a good night’s rest. I’m the leader and they’re supposed to follow me,’’ James said. “At the same time, other guys got to be aggressive, too.’’

Recent history is not on Cleveland’s side. With James, the Cavaliers are 0-3 in elimination road playoff games. They lost at Detroit in Game 7 in 2006, at Boston in Game 7 in 2008, and at Orlando last season in Game 6.

However, James said Cleveland fans should count on the Cavaliers to force a Game 7 Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena. Why? “Uh, cause they got me,’’ said the two-time MVP.

Right.

So, case closed. Shuffle along, folks. Nothing else to see here. The Cavs are fine, and the world will continue to rotate on its axis.

All kidding aside, tonight’s game is going to be fascinating on many levels. LeBron James may give out the public impression that he’s not worried, but can anyone truly blame fans of the Cleveland Cavaliers for not sharing this sentiment?

if Lebron actually said the following…:”…. Cleveland fans should count on the Cavaliers to force a Game 7 Sunday at Quicken Loans Arena. Why? “Uh, cause they got me,’’….. and goes out and backs it up against these Celtics ,IN Boston, then he would have accomplished something really special…my humble opinion is that the Cavs will lose tonight (although i think Lebron will play ok) but i wish i could see this game….

  • vtrobot

sleep-deprived, mentally ill KG is gonna have the C’s f*cking FIRED UP! how many techs in the game? i’m guessing 6.

  • mike

    lebron will score 60

  • http://www.sovainmag.com Sovain

I think LeBron needs to light a fire under his teammates ass tonight. Shaq– who is the influential player in the league–hasn’t been that emotional leader that I thought he would be. Maybe someone needs to defy the “KING” and let him know he has to step his game up. I wont be surprised if the Cavs win tonight, but Boston has the momentum and could go for the kill tonight. Can’t wait

  • Fat Lever

The passive attitude from Lebron from game 5 notwithstanding, the Cavs problem is their defense. Mike Brown should bench Mo, because whoever he was guarding was getting buckets either on the perimeter or driving to the hole. Not a good look. Actually, wouldn’t it be ironic if Mo Williams choking(last year offensively, this year defensively) was the main(or one of the main) culprit(s) for the Cavs early playoff dismissal? The guy is a regular season player.

  • Scottie Pimpin

welcome to chicago mr james haha……….. imagine king james along with the prince of chicago aka D Rose……… thats enough to give nightmares

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

There is always quite of bit of hyperbole surounding playoff games, but this is actually one of those unique moments that could not only change the reflection of the playoffs but of the entire league with the outcome of the game tonight. I’m stoked.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

Brad Long – THAT comment was hyperbole at it’s FINEST.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

    I try, Dacre.

  • Wade2Chi

Sorry Scottie. You already know who’s going to Chicago!!

  • http://gmgood@liberty.edu Gary Good

If I didn’t know better, it looked like Lebron threw the game. I don’t get it, standing around at the perimeter, passing off to teamates when he had room to drive. It looked like he didn’t want to win. Is this a kid playing games??

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

i seriously care less about what lebron say. what my mind is more focused on is how would jamison, mo and the whole team responds. what bron said there was at the same level of his last game.

  • Playa

In February everyone was praising the “king” and his subjects saying they was da shit. Now, his team mates aren’t good enough. Now you’re hearing the “king” doesn’t have enough help. Bulls**t. LeBron and his Cavs are great but overrated. Slam and the rest of the media tried to convince the world that Bron is the king, this is his coronation year, and the rest of the league are just supposed to roll over and die. Now, mother f**kers gotta wake up and smell the coffee.

Now Slam is in PR mode, trying to do some damage control to save their boy’s image. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a LeBron hater. Dude’s got made skillz. He’s one of the greatest of all time. But when Kobe has a monster game and LeBron’s bit**es at Slam says “Kobe does his best LBJ impression”, that’s when you know the ass kissing has gone too far cause Kobe was tearing it up before Bron.

Look at where Kobe is now (Western Conf finals) and look at where LBJ is now (smarting after having that ass waxed by the frickin Celtics). MVP my ass.

That being said, Cavs can still take it in 7. I’m sure the refs will help.

  • http://gmgood@liberty.edu Gary Good

GO CAVS, Lets get the job done. WIN 2, you’ve done it all year!!!

  • The D Train

As noted in various posts, tweets, articles, etc., I fully expect Lebron to shoot about 20 FT’s tonight. As long as he drives to the hole, I’ve got a bad feeling the refs are going to play a major role in this game. I hope not, but it’s not like it’d be the first time its happened.

  • The D Train

misspoke since I dont tweet…should have said “As noted…we should fully expect LBJ to shoot about 20 FT’s tonight”

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Brad Long is right though. Win or lose, if Lebron goes down fighting like he did last year, there is redemption at least. On the other hand, if the unthinkable happens again… wow.

  • bill breedley

without the intervention of the great david stern, the “king” should be on his way to his 8th early vacation.

expect though the likes of Bennett Salvatore to step up their game and provide lebron much needed support tonight.

  • http://manutebogues.blogspot.com cramzy

I need Lebron to come through to tonight seriously, or I’m going to be the laughing stock of the 4 people that read my blog. 40-10-10 Bron!

  • T-Money

I’ve always wondered why Bron’s free throws were an issue when he averages around the same numbers of FTAs/game (i.e, about 10 or so) as every superstar wing of the last decade. Wade, Kobe, AI, KD, T-Mac… they all shot around 10 fts a game in their prime. The guy lives in the lane.

  • http:slamonline.com Allenp

If my wife effs with the remote control tonight, I might catch a case. Lol… Nah, seriously, like everybody else, I’m hoping for an epic game tonight with Lebron going bananas, the Celtics hanging tough, and Lebron ultimately winning the game. Then I want an equally amazing Game 7, and I don’t care who wins that one.

  • Trout

I really don’t think LeBron is the problem it’s the fact that you have veterans such as O’neal, Jamison and even dare I say Big Z who despite being in this league longer than him not having the testicular fortitude to play the game at a higher level anymore.

LeBron is 24 and he is called on to will his team of other grown men (I use this term loosely) to the promised land.

  • kudos

Lebron get’s freethrows even when he isn’t fouled. Erryone should know that by now. 20+ freethrows and if it throws off the celtics, cavs win. But if lebron is like his usual self, and ends up bricking, they lose.

  • riggs

triple team his ass, let his non-team bail him out

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Cheryl

    I agree with Allenp.

  • Elias

Man I would really wanna see this game, but I got school tomorow and live in Finland… This game will either be like Lebron’s 48 against the Pistons or then he’ll fade and choke, I don’t know I maybe hope that the Cavs lose cause I’m a Lakers fan and I’d rather have the Celtics in the finals against us.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com TADOne

If LeBron doesn’t have a triple-double by halftime, he has failed miserably.

  • Fat Lever

I’m almost as interested to see how Doc goes about guarding Lebron, knowing he’s going to give Boston everything he has(hopefully), as I am to see what James does.

  • LA Huey

You guys act like that Games 3-6 of the NBA Finals happens all the time. I wish people would read an NBA rulebook before roasting the officiating.

  • LA Huey

@Riggs, @FatLever, I’m just as interested in Doc’s defensive strategy as I am of watching LBJ’s follow up. None of the Cavs shooters have proven to come up big in playoff road games (with the exception of Boobie Gibson, but flukes happen). At the very least, it’ll be interesting…

Lets be honest, why didn’t he have that attiutde the other night. This will be two straight years of being put out of the playoffs with the team with the best record in the NBA.(SAD) For Lebron’s cockiness its a front, because why would he say Kobe is the closest thing to MJ, or I need Kobe’s killer instinct. This dude is slow, Lebron is the leader so its his blame and if I was Chicago I would want Dwade with Rose and Noah. James can stay in Ohio with his dance partners. This dude can be seen as one the greates regular season players ever, but playoffs make u, not playoff moments folks. Dang Rex Chapman got playoff moments. IF he chokes two titles away, please PEOPLE, SLAM, ESPN and hold him to this King Standard, because I can’t stand folks who don’t deserve things and I truly believe this dude is in trouble for the next seven years, because Orlando will be great for a while, Miami if get Bosh, or Chicago if get Dwade, and didn’t Chicago win one game against the Cavs with no real scoring threats and could have won another game, thats why I had the Celtics in 6 from the beginning. The King will not get a ring and Shaq will become a punch line for the rest of his career. Shaq sit you scrub but, down, need to be lucky you got away with offensive fouls from 99 to 05. BOOK IT!!!

@Eboy I don’t know if that is unintentional comedy, or just comedy. Not that it will happen, but that you would put such precise numbers up. What did your crystal ball tell you about the Lakers last year?

    @Jackie…:Eboy is the best !!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com JL

let’s hope the refs don’t try to tip the balance. overall it’s been pretty decent this year in the games that i’ve seen this year. they’ve got some bloopers, but fouls are mostly consistent on both teams. and it’s all relative, so i think it’s better than last year, but of course with room to improve. don’t take a step back!

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Jackie, in America, you are allowed to express your feelings and thoughts freely. I’m expressing my right as a citizen of this place to guess at the potential climax of the Cavs season and it’s best player’s statline. Free thinking is hard to convey. Sorry. And Poopaloonie, while I’ve heard “Eboy is the best” before, it’s never in the throws of passion with another male, so only you, my Greek friend, have that distinction. Now go back to Cartoon World and play with your Allen Iverson toys.

  • http://gmgood@liberty.edu Gary Good

    CAVS WIN IF:
1 Lebron shows up as Lebron (drive to the hole Lebron!!!)
2 Teamates step up, esp Shaq, ANTAWN, and Mo
    3 Refs don’t screw us
4 The bench increases the lead, not the opposite
My Prediction: CAVS start out strong, hold the lead and force a game 7

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

Oh and Jackie, king of the prophecizing commenters, must I remind you of your “Kobe will average 35 this season and the Lakers will win over 72 games” from back in the summer of ’09? No? I shouldn’t? Well, you are 0-2 so far so……..

…”it’s never in the throws of passion with another male”…..: you don’t know what you’re missing !!!!
by the way, thanks for the A.I. mention !! Iverson’s tonight stats(if he was available): 42-11-14. Easilyyyy…..

  • http:slamonline.com Allenp

Say what you want about Iverson, but there is no way in hell he only takes 15 shots. Ever.

  • Fat Lever

Eboy, I’m guessing Lebron goes for self tonight. Something like 45, 5 dimes, and 11 boards. But that won’t mean a thing unless they hold Boston in check on the defensive end.

  • http://www.shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com Eboy

    Very true, Mr. Lever.

@Allenp….:you are right. Some guys just don’t know when to stop shooting. Josh had a few “Iverson like” moments in the final-4 last week and made my weekend in Paris finish in tragedy….(though, i have to admit, josh is nowhere near as dumb as A.I. bball wise. Problem is that the opponents knew he can’t shoot and he was left open all the time. There is more Josh in Lebron than you’ll ever admit….)

  • CHOOKS

Lebron is done!!! His legacy in Cleveland means nothing…Just another Charles Barkley with 10 years left on his career..If he was smart do what the celtics did and get dwade,Cbosh,Astoudemire,Joe johnson, to take less money all as boys and dominate the league in Miami or New york..Dont be selfishess…..REAL TALK

oooooohhhhhh triple double and a loss. you have all summer to develop a fadeaway jumper. He was unable to turn away from the double team and hit the jumper. So tell me again why Lebron is better than kobe. Athletically sure he’s a beast, but Kobe’s skill set is so much higher.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

@Jukai: since when do u need a reason to give “him” crap? As for The Lebron/Kobe debate its over…for this year, last time I checked there’s only one guy left. But seriously that’s it in a nutshell, right now statistically 23 is the best player on the planet. In the regular season. It’s 1A 1B in the regular season, and vice versa in the playoffs. Because championships are also stats. So there is no 1 “king.” As for everybody killing LeBron? It’s overkill and even the seed knows it. Lakers fans need to stop doing the same exact thing Guys who hate Kobe have done and grow up. Accept the media bias, double standard when it comes to LeBron. An shut up and be happy with championships! Kobe is a prick and so is lebron and Jordan is an even bigger a$$hole get over it. And for the record if LA loses to PHX or in the finals they/ Kobe will rightly get sh!t’d on just like LeBron is gettin it now.

sad for the nba. stern and espn should stop it with manufacturing “superstars” who have not been tested. too much marketing money and biased refereeing will typically not be enough if the product (i.e. Lebron) is not good enough. sure he is a triple double machine, but so was the Big O back in the day. He is a gifted athlete but does not have it yet (i am assuming he will figure it out after kobe and the big three are gone). lebron has to master the fundamentals first and learn to take it easy with the antics. no more dancing and bullcrap fake photos

  • http://www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

@Jukai lmao. That’s more like it.

  • http://slamonline.com Dave

You should wear a Suns branded cape, too, Jukai, wave it around like Barkley, Nash and Amar’e do on defence.
