Nash, Suns Finally Beat Spurs in the Playoffs

Steve and his one good eye finally took down their postseason nemesis, and the Arizona Republic has the details: “When those hated San Antonio Spurs were reeling backward, they made one last strike at the hero. An inadvertent Tim Duncan elbow to Steve Nash’s right eye drew blood and conjured up dreadful memories of another bloody Sunday in the 2007 prequel. Nash got six stitches and the eye swelled nearly shut, turning him into the vengeful monster. The man with one good eye and two MVPs had died five playoff deaths in Dallas and Phoenix at the Spurs’ hands but slew the beast this time with a 10-point, five-assist fourth quarter that helped the Suns complete a conference semifinals sweep, 107-101 at AT&T Center … Phoenix won a franchise-best six consecutive playoff games to advance to its ninth Western Conference finals in franchise history and could play the top-seeded Los Angeles Lakers, who lead their series 3-0 against Utah. The conference finals series will not start until at least May 17. All the sweeter, the team nobody figured on being in the NBA final four got there by being the first team to sweep San Antonio since the Lakers did it in the 2001 NBA Finals. ‘I just wanted to win the game,’ said Nash, who opened the series with a 33-point, 10-assist effort in Game 1. ‘I didn’t want to just be out there faking it. We’d come so far and had such a great opportunity. I don’t want to glorify it and make it into fairy tales, but it’s been a long time that I haven’t been able to beat this team, and I had a great shot at it. I was just trying to close it out and do everything I could.”‘

Jukai deserves congratulations more than Steve Kerr does.

  • JoeMaMa

Wow. My Spurs are handled. One-eyed Willy really stepped it up this game. Well….congrats, Suns. They’re fighting The Man, winning series, and doing it all with…Channing Frye? How did this HAPPEN??!!

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

We had the dragon Slayer Goran, Deep Fryer, Gums McDudley, a sprite drinker from the 1980s, ol MVP bags and a decent coach.

  • kh

Way to go Stevie!!! Keep it rolling

  • zop

at least the Spurs beat the Mavs. Accomplishment enough

  • KH10

because the suns are fu@$ing awesome!! this team is fast becoming my favourite suns team of the last decade, just as fun to watch, but actually playing with heart and grit on defense as well. bring on the Lakers!

  • Ken

As a Suns fan, this is like my wildest dreams fulfilled. Sooooo happy!

After the Suns were 2-0. I said the Suns would go on to 4-0 facing these Spurs. No one believed!

They will have a tough time ousting LA (no way Jazz win four in a row). LA has a ton of bigs and length…as long as the lakeshow defends the three, it could be a short series for phoenix. Then again…if Bynum is not 100% or if Amare bullies Gasol enough, the SUns could grit it out…they HAVE to win game one to even have a chance though. Steve Nash will have even more fun than he did against spurs…fischer/farmar/brown cant contain Nasty…Kobe might have to give it a go.

    Get rid of Richard Jefferson.

I’m flying down to Barkley’s house for that BBQ!!!!!

  • Sparty’s Law

The Suns/Lakers series will be the best series in this year’s playoffs. I guess that’s not saying much at this point, but it should be a very entertaining match-up.

  • rikson

    Well, Im impressed….

“team to sweep San Antonio since the Lakers did it in the 2001 NBA Finals” – meaning WCF. And while I’m not a Suns fan, it’s really great to see them run a successful season without Mike D’Antoni. Grant Hill FTW!!

  • http://banksitin.blogspot.com/ vmcb

oh yes yes yes. last night felt pretty great. cudos to nash for breaking the nba’s cyclops barrier, as well. ahem.

  • hillbomber

I wonder what Mark Cuban is thinking right now.

  • Jake

I need to get my hands on some Grant Hill Fila’s asap.

Please someone, tell me they still produce these.I’d wear them every day.

“Kobe, Lakers, finally beat Suns in playoffs” Revenge is a b*tch like that.

  • dsleepy

@ hillbomber: me too. i always wonder what would’ve happened to the ’06 mavs in the finals if cuban hadn’t let nash go.

  • Sparker

    1 word: hallelujah

Down with the Suns since the MVP-season of sir Charles I can only enjoy this moment. But, the Lakers are next and I’m not sure who is there to hold Kobe, Pau, Ron and Lamar. Gonna be tough, but probably great to watch! Goran Dragic!

  • Double J

    It’s time for Kobe’s Redemption from 06.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Times like these, I wonder what tim thomas is up to

  • rashado

    lol @ tarzan

it’s going to be a hell of a series, although i think the consensus is clear at this point: lakers in at least 5

  • buppie

I’m very happy the Spurs didn’t advance. The karma of so much dirty play came back to them. The only things Los Suns need fear is the officiating in the next series. Or Sheriff Joke Arpaio rounding up Nash and Barbosa und demanding zie papers!

  • buppie

Goran Dragic Goran Dragic Goran Dragic Goran Dragic Goran Dragic Goran Dragic Goran Dragic

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

I will say this, suns have a hell of a bench. Leandrinho, dudley, deep frye, and dragic can all score and shoot well from 3. They will be the diff vs la as they were vs sa. Spurs only rotated 8 players, and thats counting bonner, suns used 10. Give the suns credit, many players made many shots. Lets see what they do vs la

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Tarzan: You really should be barred from giving ANY credit to the Suns, considering even after game 2 you were saying they were gonna lose in seven.

  • http://www.youtube.com/ The Promise

I figured that somehow the Suns would choke it away like always, but they pulled it out finally. They exorcised some big time playoffs demons, now they will face a team they have beated multiple times in the past, though those Laker teams wern’t nearly as good as this one. But it will be a great series, who knows who will win it. But I do think it will go to 7 games. I’m glad the Suns finally did it. I was really sick of looking at the Spurs. Looks like their dynasty is dunzo.

  • Nawlins Realest.

    suns vs magic PLEASE

  • Justin

I’m sorry but Steve Nash is the man. I can count on one hand how many other NBA players would have come out and played with one eye like Nash did and maybe not even that many. That was just sick and I really hope the Suns can somehow get past the Lakers. I don’t think they will but it will be entertaining as hell to watch.

  • http://www.nba.com/suns Dacre

I had said this team was going to he WCF at the seasons start.

  • J

sweet sweep. cmon now, a team that was expected to miss the playoffs? so happy for them. but as much as i wanted the suns to win, its LA in six i think. i hope Stat bullies LA so much enough to cover his effort on D. PG is a suns win. the rest not sure though, they can match-up suns speed with brown-kobe-ron-lamar-pau and still be a whole lot bigger at the same time. i think this will be the time they would certainly miss Robin Lopez, not that he could match well with bynum, it’s just that they need to throw another big in that LA towers. but, if the suns roll so hot on 3, dictate tempo, and especially frye if he can lure up bynum to defend him most on the perimeter and make him invaluable on D.. they could put up a nightmare in LA. but still this series is LA i think.

Where are all the Nash haters now, I’m used too seeing them pop up whenever the Suns are mentioned…

Some things in sports can’t be measured by stats or numbers, and if you really think Nash isn’t an MVP type player you don’t know hoops period. Don’t get me wrong, I ain’t saying some outlandish type ish like he is better than LBJ or anything like that, but the guy is one of the best leaders in the game, and his skill set is on a whole nother planet from most dudes in the league..

Befor this game, Spurs put the suns out of the playoffs 4/5 times (not to sure who did the other time) and I was surprised the Suns swept the Spurs! Im a die hard Spurs fan, but I give props to the Suns with all there 3 point shots! Gave me a intense game the last 2 min of the 4th quarter though!
