NBA Announces All-Defensive Teams

Rajon Rondo and Gerald Wallace make their First Team debut (this is actually Wallace’s first All-Defensive Team selection). Disappointing vote total for Kobe, who finished second just last season. KB’s First Team votes dropped by 11, and eight coaches didn’t find him worthy of even a Second Team honor. (As always, two points were awarded for a First Team vote and one point was awarded for a Second Team vote.)

Player First Second Points
Dwight Howard 28 1 57
Rajon Rondo 23 4 50
LeBron James 20 5 45
Kobe Bryant 13 8 34
Gerald Wallace 11 8 30
Tim Duncan 8 5 21
Dwyane Wade 8 4 20
Josh Smith 6 8 20
Anderson Varejao 2 11 15
Thabo Sefolosha 3 8 14
Other notables, with point totals (First Team votes in parentheses): Jason Kidd, 12 (4); Marcus Camby, 12 (1); Ron Artest, 11 (3); Deron Williams, 10, (2); Kirk Hinrich, 9 (1); Andrew Bogut, 8; Luc Mbah a Moute, 8 (1)

Holy crap. Thabo Sefolosha is definitely making a name for himself. He’s like the new Bruce Bowen, without the dirty play… (unless he does, which makes him an even better comparison. lol)

  • Bruno

varejao in the all defensive second team??? no way … varejao sucks

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

Luc Mbah a Moute is the new Bruce Bowen.

  • zeekthefreak

    agreed varejao=crap

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I concur with Bruno. Varejao shouldn’t be awarded for his constant flopping! That ain’t desense! Kirk Hinrich deserves it over him. Hinrich will guard anyone from Deron Williams to LeBron James. Varejao is jucst an actor.

Kobe on the first team? What a joke

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com Don

Rajon Rondo is proving to be a steal for the Celtics.

    Varejao = great ‘performance.’

  • mick

kobe only play d fence in big games

  • DreJayAre

Surprised Kobe made it and not Artest. I know Kobe’s D monster is bigger than Ron Ron’s, it just doesn’t show it’s face very often. Thought he’d be 2nd team this year.

  • ripslam

Rondoooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!! Varejao is a joke. I’m not kidding, I wanna run up to him, punch him, then shave his head.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

Kobe only made it because Wade took 2/3 of the season off. Can you name another defensive two guard? Ron still got screwed though.

  • T-Money

I’m seriously wondering if most of the commenters actually watch games. Varejao has completely changed his defensive approach this year taking advantage of the verticality rule. He rarely takes charges anymore but instead challenges the shots by going straight up.

  • kwame

this is voted by coaches…so all u none coaches can shut the hell up

  • neaorin

T-Money: they do watch games, but only remember dunks and buzzer beaters. They wouldn’t know what good defense looked like if it came up to them and smacked them in the face.

  • funkdoc

I think these superstars often get voted because of their status. Okay, they are superstars, but they are also scorers on big teams and play a lot of minutes. But I do understand Rondo and Howard. But Kobe? Seriously? I think Artest plays better D than Kobe.
What I also dislike is the focus on statistics when they make these teams. Blocks, steals, etc. One can play hard nose defense without blocking a shot or taking a steal. That’s why I love that Tabo’s on this team. He gets some steals, yeah, but he just plays hard nose D, staying in front of his man, etc. And if you would make a team based on these principles, you wouldn’t see Kidd being considered. That’s like taking Mike Bibby over Bruce Bowen. If I had a vote, I would at least take guys like Tabo, Artest, Grant Hill (he plays great of late), Serge Ibaka, Shane Battier, Batum, and so on.
I mean, is Lebron that good to be on the first team? Did you ever think about the fact that the guys who get a lot of steals often take the risk of not staying in the passing lane? It’s just not all statistics…

  • http://shawn-kemps-offspring.blogspot.com/ Tariqُُ

    What, no Nash?

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

How does Kobe make the 1st team when Ron routinely guards the other teams best player while Kobe guards a scrub and roams the passing lanes? I don’t know about Lebron either. The “chase down” blocks are cool for the highlights, but that has nothing to do with being an elite defender.

  • JoeMaMa

@dfrance21: you don’t get the best record in the league when your best player can’t D up. He’s a legit defender and, from what just about every basketball mind says, helps coach the team. Respect for his D. And respect for Gerald Wallace!!!! BETCATS, NOW’S YOUR TIME!!

  • Atrain

Mbah Moute will soon be a fixture on all-nba defensive first team…only reason he isn’t already is people are just starting to notice the Bucks

Hes the next Bowen/Battier w/out Bowen’s cheap shots

  • Hangtime Hec

Lebron James is not a better defender then josh smith or even a aging Ron artest. This gets under my skin because in retrospect people are going to look at this and just assume he was a great defender. When in fact he just got on this list because of his big name and his highlight blocks.

  • http://www.anwilson.blogspot.com/ rainman10

Overall, the 2nd team is better defensively than that 1st team. Interesting.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

you guys dont know sh1t bout bball…yes, Varejao is annoying, but is a master at defending the pick&roll(only the most runned play in the league), showing and recovring, while playinh the passing lanes, good post and help defender and very active.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

cosign rainman10, trade Timmy with D12 and thats really true

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Really? Bron on the first team? That’s a joke man. He’s an average defender at best. The way the league tries to shove his “greatness” down fan’s throats is so annoying…

  • Kas

Those chasedown blocks does not make James a good defender. Everybody’s way too caught up in this guys’ hype

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers is spot on with varejao.
btw, what happened to Battier? wasn’t he a runner-up to DPOY just a year ago (remember he was playing such great textbook D on Kobe that it was actually fun to watch?), and now there’s no mention of him?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Kobe plays defense, Ron plays defense and Bron plays defense, but Ron should have won over Bron and Kobe was the best two guard defender, Wade took off too much of the season.

  • http://idunkonthem.blogspot.com/ albie1kenobi

*correction* battier was voted 4th last year, and was on the 2nd team the last two years.

  • BostonBaller

Rondo wa sonly 7 pts below Howard!!! He will overtake him within 2 years.vHoward blocks & alters a lot of shots and Rondo steals everything in sight. I’m up in the air on LBJ being 1st team but it does sound good with the MVP trophy. His chase down blocks are nice but that can be taken care of by slowing up and leaning back on your layups or basically go in for the dunk and more than likely a foul should get called. In a game, the 1st team would kill the 2nd team.

  • http://www.nba.com/bobcats Anton

Yyou guys complain about Kobe … stop it. How the F does Bron does 1st OR 2nd team? That is crazy.

  • http://slamonline.com Nick Gibson

When the Cavs play the Hawks, LeBron guards Marvin Williams. Just saying.

  • http://freshnproper.com Q

I’m a huge Black Mamba advocate…..but how does Kobe make it over Artest?

  • http://dsfjklf.com Jukai

Lebron should not have made first team. He probably deserves second-team.
Kobe should not have made ANY team defense. Thabo, Artest, and Hinrich all routinely guard the two-spot and should have been on this list far ahead of Bryant. Bryant is a GREAT DEFENDER but because of his injuries, has given up all the defensive assignments to Ron Artest.
Bryant only guarded nobodies, is having one of his worst seasons steal-wise, had only eight more blocks than Steve Nash did, and got first team?
This is why I feel coaches are absolutely worthless in basketball.
And it upsets me to see Myles using the exact same logic that the coaches probably used. Ugh.

  • J-Ro

Wasn’t joash smith voted second place for DPOY? Shouldn’t that put him in the first team?

  • J-Ro

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Damn jukai made some great points. This list overall is a fn joke. Esp mr bean and bron. They always guard the weakest player on the other team, except maybe 3 times, and everyone says what a great defender. Complete bs. Wade didnt have a great year, but def better on d than kobe and bron.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Great point j ro. But that makes too much sense for the league. Cuz if hes on there, who gets left off, kobe or bron? Cuz gerald has to be on there. Drop bean n bron. Add ron n josh, fixed

  • J-Ro

@ Tarzan I was actually thinking about replacing bron and Kobe with Smoove and Thabo.

  • Saami

Who the hell put Dwight in the 2nd Team with their vote!?

  • T-Money

LeBron and Kobe don’t guard the best perimeter guy on the opposing team for the whole 48 unless they have too much responsibilities at the offensive end. MJ did the same thing with Pip. Both are still elite defenders. These teams are voted on by coaches, not journalists or coms people. When they’re locked in, in the 4th quarter, Kobe, Bron and Wade can shut down anybody. / BTW, can we stop talking about the chase down blocks as some kind of hotdog play? It’s literally saving 2 points every time. That’s extremely valuable.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Before I look at this list, I’ll say this: If I see Kobe Bryant or LeBron James or Dwyane Wade’s name on All Defensive 1st Team, I’m going to be f*cking p!ssed off.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

lol in all seriousness though, the NBA All-Defensive Team is bullsh!t. LEBRON JAMES AND KOBE BRYANT ARE NOT THE BEST DEFENDERS AT THEIR POSTION. Shane Battier, with an injured ankle and a broken face, in his SLEEP, is still a better defender than Kobe Bryant. F*ck that.

  • http://juanm.garcia@comcast.net Flashback

Who gives a fukc? The only thing that matters is the ring.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Ron Artest is CLEARLY the best defender on the Lakers. I’ve heard people bullsh!tting all year about how he’s slowed down, how he’s getting older, but he STILL guards the best player on the opposing team. So how in the f*ck is Kobe Bryant ahead of him when he’s not even the best defender on his OWN team?
Hopefully this year’s playoffs against OKC, in which Artest literally shut Kevin Durant Down, will quell all doubts about his ability.
Well, apparently they haven’t, because LEBRON JAMES made 1st Team and Artest didn’t even crack second.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: THE NBA ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAMS MEAN NOTHING.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

And WHERE is Kyle Lowry? Lowry is one of the best point guard defenders in the league, yet he doesn’t even get 1 vote? But Jason Kidd gets 12? SMH you’ve got to be kidding me.
And Thabo Sefolosha should have made 1st Team.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Alright no more complaining, I’ve said my piece. I’m actually in a good mood *knock on wood * . Pardon the swearing.

  • Ryan.T.

Where’s the votes for Stephen Jackson?

  • wilz

wow..ppl still talk about shane battier?

  • omnixyience

You people talk crap, most specially the regular douche bag who comment’s here.

Try defending wing players and perimeter guards if you have two broken fingers and a bum knee..

you talk a lot of s**t and a lot of confidence making the assumptions as if you experience defending professional b-ball player.

They deserved to be there, as much as I hate Varejao to be on that list. But he deserved it.
The coaches are smarter and get a closer look on every player playing on the court every game so they know more as much as we do.

    So shut the f**k up!!!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ “Try defending wing players and perimeter guards if you have two broken fingers and a bum knee..”
If a player is injured and can’t defend as well as another player on his team, he shouldn’t be on the freaking list!

  • J

    @Myles: kirk hinrich

  • J

varejao deserves to be in that place. though Bron and josh smith must switch up.

  • no id

Just wondering how do Josh Smith finish second in dpoy but he makes the second team..just curious to know

  • Ronald

I’m a big Spurs fan and I really don’t think Timmy should be all-defense this year. He’s on the list by reputation.

  • Spetsnaz

Having Kobe on that list is a joke, u might as well put Ben Wallace in the 1st team as well. Also I don’t know how Wade is there considering he defends no one to save his energy. Q-Rich is always given the tougher defensive assignment

I think this team should be called the All Star All Defensive Team

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Thabo made 2nd Team? But wait, how? Euros are soft, right? Gummi bear soft. Take that!!! Thabo is the 1st Swiss basketballer to be named all NBA anything. A fantastic achievement. Meilleures salutations, Monsieur Sefolosha.

  • http://www.lkz.ch Darksaber

Hey omni, i take issue with being insulted because i have an opinion, say your piece, omit the generalization, or go swear around on youtube (where the real douche nozzles roam).

  • Cmac

Varejao? what the hell? there are so many better defenders… wheres bogut at?

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com Hoopistani

  • Flash

When is Kobe going to die so dwade can be on the first team?

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

@Myles – Trevor Ariza, Kyle Lowry (yes Lowry at 6’1 plays the 2 with AB at 1)
Ariza should be on that list. So should Chuck Hayes. So should Shane Battier.
    What a fu*king joke of a list.
Good to see Rondo and Wallace make that list, but jeezus, it’s overall awful.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

The ghost of Ben Wallace played better D than LeBron and Kobe this year…

  • Elias

Ron Artest and Josh Smith sould replace Kobe and Lebron. This just shows you that NBA sucks up the big superstars. Nice to see Gerald Wallace get some love.

  • jumpman3224

Regardless of opinion, fact is Kobe made the first team. This selection is his 8th first team selection, which is tied for the second most behind 9 for MJ and GP respectively (TD, Pip, Bobby Jones and KG also have 8). It is also his tenth overall selection, which is tied for 3rd most ever, behind TD and Cap and tied with KG and Pip. This is the type of thing that will get figured into his legacy when all is said and done and SLAM and other magazines are trying to figure where to put him in the top 10 ever.

  • T-Money

Hursy: so you want 4 players for team that’s ranked 21st in points allowed (102 a game!) and 23rd in opponents’ fg% on the all-nba defensive teams? Lemme guess… you’re from Houston? / There’s a reason Cleveland and LA are on top of every defensive category and it’s not just because of Artest and Varejao.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

Switch Wade and Josh Smith for Kobe and LeBron.

  • Jacob (from Australia)

I’d go 1st team – Dwight, Josh Smith, Battier, Thabo and Rondo. 2nd team – Bogut, Wallace, Bron, Wade and Kidd.

  • http://springbored.net letsmotor

no votes for Kendrick Perkins? also, Battier should’ve been on there. he probably didn’t get votes because his team didn’t make the playoffs, but I’d still say he’s the best perimeter defender in the league.

  • mems

lebron is such an overrated defender. easy to be a “great” defender when you never get called for fouls or goal tending. smh nba

  • mems

    kobe shouldn’t be there either

  • mems

how does battier get overlooked by this every year? and id have chuck hayes on there waaay before varejao. not to be a rockets homer but at least give spots to those who deserve it. not just superstar players. thats lame
