  I concur with Bruno. Varejao shouldn’t be awarded for his constant flopping! That ain’t desense! Kirk Hinrich deserves it over him. Hinrich will guard anyone from Deron Williams to LeBron James. Varejao is jucst an actor.

  I’m seriously wondering if most of the commenters actually watch games. Varejao has completely changed his defensive approach this year taking advantage of the verticality rule. He rarely takes charges anymore but instead challenges the shots by going straight up.

  I think these superstars often get voted because of their status. Okay, they are superstars, but they are also scorers on big teams and play a lot of minutes. But I do understand Rondo and Howard. But Kobe? Seriously? I think Artest plays better D than Kobe.
  What I also dislike is the focus on statistics when they make these teams. Blocks, steals, etc. One can play hard nose defense without blocking a shot or taking a steal. That’s why I love that Tabo’s on this team. He gets some steals, yeah, but he just plays hard nose D, staying in front of his man, etc. And if you would make a team based on these principles, you wouldn’t see Kidd being considered. That’s like taking Mike Bibby over Bruce Bowen. If I had a vote, I would at least take guys like Tabo, Artest, Grant Hill (he plays great of late), Serge Ibaka, Shane Battier, Batum, and so on.
  I mean, is Lebron that good to be on the first team? Did you ever think about the fact that the guys who get a lot of steals often take the risk of not staying in the passing lane? It’s just not all statistics…

  How does Kobe make the 1st team when Ron routinely guards the other teams best player while Kobe guards a scrub and roams the passing lanes? I don’t know about Lebron either. The “chase down” blocks are cool for the highlights, but that has nothing to do with being an elite defender.

  Lebron James is not a better defender then josh smith or even a aging Ron artest. This gets under my skin because in retrospect people are going to look at this and just assume he was a great defender. When in fact he just got on this list because of his big name and his highlight blocks.

  Rondo wa sonly 7 pts below Howard!!! He will overtake him within 2 years.vHoward blocks & alters a lot of shots and Rondo steals everything in sight. I’m up in the air on LBJ being 1st team but it does sound good with the MVP trophy. His chase down blocks are nice but that can be taken care of by slowing up and leaning back on your layups or basically go in for the dunk and more than likely a foul should get called. In a game, the 1st team would kill the 2nd team.

  Kobe should not have made ANY team defense. Thabo, Artest, and Hinrich all routinely guard the two-spot and should have been on this list far ahead of Bryant. Bryant is a GREAT DEFENDER but because of his injuries, has given up all the defensive assignments to Ron Artest.
  Bryant only guarded nobodies, is having one of his worst seasons steal-wise, had only eight more blocks than Steve Nash did, and got first team?
  This is why I feel coaches are absolutely worthless in basketball.
  And it upsets me to see Myles using the exact same logic that the coaches probably used. Ugh.

  LeBron and Kobe don’t guard the best perimeter guy on the opposing team for the whole 48 unless they have too much responsibilities at the offensive end. MJ did the same thing with Pip. Both are still elite defenders. These teams are voted on by coaches, not journalists or coms people. When they’re locked in, in the 4th quarter, Kobe, Bron and Wade can shut down anybody. / BTW, can we stop talking about the chase down blocks as some kind of hotdog play? It’s literally saving 2 points every time. That’s extremely valuable.

I’ve heard people bullsh!tting all year about how he’s slowed down, how he’s getting older, but he STILL guards the best player on the opposing team.   Hopefully this year’s playoffs against OKC, in which Artest literally shut Kevin Durant Down, will quell all doubts about his ability.

  Regardless of opinion, fact is Kobe made the first team. This selection is his 8th first team selection, which is tied for the second most behind 9 for MJ and GP respectively (TD, Pip, Bobby Jones and KG also have 8). It is also his tenth overall selection, which is tied for 3rd most ever, behind TD and Cap and tied with KG and Pip. This is the type of thing that will get figured into his legacy when all is said and done and SLAM and other magazines are trying to figure where to put him in the top 10 ever.
