Paul Pierce, Celtics Look to Sweep Orlando

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

“Anybody got a BROOM?”

That’s the taunting message that materialized on Paul Pierce’s Twitter page not too long after the Boston Celtics dug the Orlando Magic into what could be an insurmountable 2-0 hole. Predictably, the tweet has now vanished, with Pierce’s social media company claiming his page was hacked.

It doesn’t really matter if the account was hacked or not in the grand scheme of things; the damage — the kind that matters; the kind that takes place on the hardwood — has already been done to the Magic’s pride.

They face a much harsher reality than perceived disrespect from their opponent: Orlando’s season is on the brink of termination, with the next two games taking place in Beantown.

Despite a breakout game from Dwight Howard (30 points, 8 boards), the rest of the Magic came up short.

Rashard Lewis disappeared yet again, Vince Carter morphed into Nick Anderson at the free throw line late in the game, and JJ Redick had the ultimate brain freeze, wasting valuable seconds in failing to immediately call a timeout in the waning moments.

It all adds up to a scenario no Orlando Magic player, coach, front-office type, or fan could have possibly imagined. A dream season is on the verge of ending in the most devastating way possible, against a team absolutely no one expected to get this far (save for themselves, perhaps.)

Pierce didn’t even need to use Twitter to crystallize the situation at hand; his postgame comments during a television interview told the entire story, that of a team now only two wins away from a return to the NBA Finals: “We’re coming home to close it out.”

When I 1st heard about the tweet on the local news I said what a boneheaded statement especially since the team as a whole hasn’t done anything like this during the playoffs. I thought that if P Double did indeed tweet that it had to be b/c he was pissed at being taken down and his mouth started to run. In his post game interview he did try to get the boston fans going by talking about their/our part in closing this thing out at home. I thought the tweet was strange since it happened almost before the guys could have showered. lol. As far as his account being hacked..who knows.

Breaking News: Lebron visits Washington with John Calipari.

  • BostonBaller Posted: May.19 at 9:15 am
^^^renas was pissed and said awww shoot when he saw all the uhauls that came rolling in, he was also miffed by the big Wall the were putting up around his locker area. hahaha. Maybe he will be sent packing to the wild wild west where he can run and gun all day.

  • Ryne Nelson Posted: May.19 at 9:19 am
    They can do it.

  • LDR4 Posted: May.19 at 9:45 am
Generally sweep statements are reserved for teams that are up 3-0. Pierce should know that his tweet will end up plastered all over the Magic locker room. SVG will use it as motivation. Maybe Pierce can start planning the championship parade too.

  • Shem Posted: May.19 at 9:52 am
This has happened twice now. Teams that sweep the first 2 rounds end up getting killed in the conference finals. Why? Is it a confidence issue where you underestimate teams? I have no answer for this.. Last year Cleveland and this year Orlando. I’m not too sure but this may be the first time EVER where a team has been swept when having homecourt advantage. It’s surely not over yet but this is stunning. I predicted Boston in 7. Not 4 or 5.

  • dfrance21 Posted: May.19 at 9:56 am
It always gets me when one team talks crap and people say “Oh, why did Team A talk, now Team B is going to be fired up!” If you weren’t fired up after getting your butt whipped in front of your home crowd in game one, then some words ain’t gonna fire you up. You shouldn’t need trash talk to get you motivated in the ECFs.

  • Eboy Posted: May.19 at 10:04 am
I guess Dwight Howard is now on equal footing as the worst active player in the league with Lebron James ’cause he can’t win a big game by himself. *sarcasm just came into view*

  • LA Huey Posted: May.19 at 10:05 am
^dfrance21, agreed. The fact that you’re in the playoffs should be all the motivation you can possibly ask for….Props to Pierce for calling the series. Now to sit back and watch what happens.

  • Noel Posted: May.19 at 10:06 am
Cosign dfrance lol the magic should’ve been as fired up as they could be four game 2. I think a lot of Pierce’s confidence comes from the fact that he has Rajon frickin Rondo on his team. Dude is a monster

  • T-Money Posted: May.19 at 10:10 am
Lesson learned: beating down sh-tty teams in the first few rounds has no impact on performance in later rounds. / E: I’m still waiting for the uproar in the blogosphere. Where are the articles about Orlando being front runners?

  • Adam Fleischer Posted: May.19 at 10:10 am
It was a little curious that this tweet appeared while he was speaking post game at the podium.

  • Eboy Posted: May.19 at 10:13 am
T-Money, it won’t happen. Too much work to actually to construct an argument that doesn’t involve throwing around one guys name.

  • vtrobot Posted: May.19 at 10:15 am
rondo and KG jumpers in the final minutes were cold blooded. PP with another great line. he was fired up when the crowd was booing while he was getting his flagrant foul scrapes cleaned up. that was one of the slipperiest games i’ve seen in a while. did anyone notice how when wince slipped and really hurt his wrist, he somewhat gently placed that wrist on the ground during the fall? it was like he didn’t want to look foolish for falling so he had to “hurt” something, but the thing he “hurt” wasn’t really impacted by the fall. doesn’t SVG ever exercise, even by accident, during ORL practices? dude is like a ball wearing a dark polo shirt.

  • kenNY Posted: May.19 at 10:16 am
09 Cavs = 10 Magic..i hate dwight but not as much as i hate boston

  • namik Posted: May.19 at 10:23 am
People are still butt hurt about LeBron getting bounced?? Sad.

  • letsmotor Posted: May.19 at 10:28 am
i agree with LA Huey. if Orlando’s not motivated by being in the ECF, then i don’t see how a tweet will change that. that said, i don’t think motivation (heart, energy, drive, whatever you want to call it) is Orlando’s problem. i’m not even sure if it’s about them being over confident because they swept two series (i don’t think this is why cleveland lost to orlando either). i think boston’s just playing very well on both ends. they’re playing dwight howard one-on-one, which helps them take away threes, and they’re just executing very well on offense.

  • hoodsnake Posted: May.19 at 10:33 am
His next tweet said “Raon (no J) Rondo 4 Finals MVP”. Who are we to argue?

  • LA Huey Posted: May.19 at 10:37 am
Question for Celtics fans: I know its premature to call right now, but are you guys feeling like the Lake Show was just keeping the trophy warm whilst Garnett was in the trainer’s room last year?

  • DP Posted: May.19 at 10:43 am
At the end of the day, mofo’s just not performing in the playoffs. Cavs had the team, Magic looked like they formed a team, they just not performing. Paul Pierce is super extra in everything he does, though. You can’t lie dude can do some acting.

  • Allenp Posted: May.19 at 10:48 am
Good win for Boston. Before the series I knew Paul Pierce would prove to the world just how good a defender Lebron James has become.
After all, Lebron made him look like he was finished, but now Pierce is looking like a superstar against the Magic defenders.
It’s going to be a great Finals with the Lakers and Celtics. Classic.

  • LA Huey Posted: May.19 at 10:50 am
DP, at the end of the day, the Celtics are just not letting mofo’s perform. Boston refused to allow the Cavs or Magic do what they do best (let their superstar carry them).

  • Anton Posted: May.19 at 10:56 am
Gortat’s nose averages more rebounds than Amare’s whole body.

  • DP Posted: May.19 at 10:57 am
That is were the rest of the team must perform, LA Huey. But looking at the games, both of those teams rely on their superstars so much that they can’t play unless the superstar plays well. I’m just hoping that Lamar, Pau, and Ron(sometimes) continue ot bring it to help Kob out. Even Fisher has been playing better.

  • BostonBaller Posted: May.19 at 11:27 am
@ Adam Fleischer i alluded to that also but you know people are going to run with what sells. lol. @hoodsnake nice name…RaJon’s J has been there when needed & so has his FT’s. @LA Huey Posted 10:37 am..Yes, it’s premature & no, the Lakers won it out right..woulda coulda doesn’t look good in a trophy case or on a banner. lol

  • mj23 Posted: May.19 at 11:31 am
It seems like deja vu with Dwight Howard. His moves are so robotic and besides dunking he has no go to moves. I don’t see any progress in his game since last year. Mark Jackson said the other day, Ewing would average 40 pts. against this defense.

  • letsmotor Posted: May.19 at 11:32 am
@LA Huey: to answer your question about the lakers keeping the trophy warm: yes.

  • Elias Posted: May.19 at 11:32 am
No matter how bad the Cs will beat the Magic, LA is gonna win the title. Kobe’s got venegance against the Suns and the Celtics. Hope that Kobe doesn’t try to kill the Celtics by himself, cause they can play some defense like we saw in 08.

  • LA Huey Posted: May.19 at 11:36 am
DP, I feel you but it’s not like the other guys are their typical looks. Boston did a fantastic job of shading to LBJ, crowding him, and minimizing passing angles all at the same time (they basically found a way to double him but still play man-to-man). Orlando absolutely relies on Dwight getting doubled and Perk/Sheed can do a solid job D-ing him up by themselves. Lakers, with Pau as a #2, will probably fair better.

  • roman Posted: May.19 at 11:36 am
These playoffs are really exposing players for who they are. Why the hell was D. Howard smiling, up 1 with 3mins left in the game. Another clown. Get serious and get ur game up.

  • letsmotor Posted: May.19 at 11:43 am
just to clarify: i’m not saying the lakers didn’t deserve the title last year and i’m not saying that if kg was healthy, we would’ve definitely taken it. not taking anything away from the lakers. i’m just a celtics fan who feels like if kg was around last year, we COULD be (it’s a possibility, not a declarative statement) working on a three-peat right now. oh well.

  • the_baller20 Posted: May.19 at 11:54 am
I always had faith in this Celt’s team even when people totally dismissed them from one of the top teams in the NBA. I know they can sweep ‘em in 4 or if Orlando has at least one solid game than Boston will finish them in 5!! Start thinking about the summer dwight!

  • the_baller20 Posted: May.19 at 11:54 am

  • Robb Posted: May.19 at 11:56 am
Yeah sure, your page got hacked. I hate Paul “Rat face” Pierce. I hope the Magic can come back. If not, the Lakers are gonna kick your green @sses

  • Allenp Posted: May.19 at 11:59 am
Dwight Howard scored 30. He hit decent shots in the lane. If he gets deep position, he can score using jump hooks and other moves. He just struggles at setting up outside the lane and working his way inside.
And Ewing would not destroy this Boston defense.

  • riggs Posted: May.19 at 12:07 pm
im going to laugh my a** off if they sweep, sweet sassy molasses thats irony.

  • ClydeSays Posted: May.19 at 12:10 pm
I doubt Pierce tweeted that himself. Maybe an overanxious assistant. Pierce has learned not to give out bulletin board material.

  • Bryan Posted: May.19 at 12:25 pm
if by destroy you mean routinely travel , shoot fadaways and miss free throws then yes Ewing would destroy this celtics defense.

  • T-Money Posted: May.19 at 12:29 pm
Sports journalists always look for some esoteric angles explaining how a player finally “clicked”. PP was guarded by Bron and now he’s being guarded by Vince. I mean, it’s painfully obvious. No need to veer off into psychological bs. Dwight was being guarded by Al Horford and Zaza and now it’s Perk and Sheed. Simple and plain. Dwight hasn’t “lost focus” and PP isn’t more “locked in”.

  • ramn Posted: May.19 at 12:32 pm
Poor Stern, I wonder if he’ll ever give up his dream of Lebron vs. Kobe Finals…Well at least he has a Boston vs. LA finals to keep him warm at night…

  • Jose Posted: May.19 at 1:01 pm
Boston’s chances of beating LA i think will become visible depending on how they finish the magic. i mean cuz sure they beat ORL at home but the spread was 4 and 3 points. if these games are close the whole series.bostons gunna have a very difficult time w/ LA.

  • orl.chris Posted: May.19 at 1:09 pm
magic need to get a lot more active on the offensive side of the ball. we’re doing a pathetic job of getting shooters open. if stans plan is to let JJ dribble around in circles for 10 seconds then pass to someone standing still, we’re done.

  • BostonBaller Posted: May.19 at 1:29 pm
I think P Double came out of his shell in game 6 of the Cavs series and kept on rolling.

  • dsleepy Posted: May.19 at 1:31 pm
pierce: “our fans not gonna LET us let up. We comin’ home to close it out.” i’m not even a celtics fan, but when i heard/saw pierce’s post-game interview my only thought was this: paul pierce is f*cking gangsta. props to boston fans for helping fuel this team. not like the fans in dc where when lebron comes to town there are more ppl cheering for the damn cavs than the home team. dam sellouts..

  • rainman10 Posted: May.19 at 1:34 pm
What did Ewing average against Antonio and Dale Davis? What did he averaged against the Bulls front court? And you think he would average 40 against Perk, KG, and Sheed??

  • Ghost (of Oliver Miller) Posted: May.19 at 1:38 pm
^^ all analysis about Boston having a hard time are pointless at this time. They’ve exceeded all expectations of those who listen to the media. The ones who follow knew if healthy they would have been something to fear. If Garnett was not injured last year, they may be competing for a three peat this year. Fact is they play like a team and team work wins. They remind me of Detroit a few years back but with more pieces. If the Cavs didn’t give them a problem and the Magic don’t appear to, why the Lakers

  • mj23 Posted: May.19 at 2:02 pm
Dwight just has an overall ugly game. That’s all I can say. His hook shot is ugly, free throws ugly, and footwork is atrocious. The one comment I will make is the Hawks and Bobcats were just sooo bad that they made the Magic look so good. Also, I think the Celtics have turned it up in the playoffs. They basically sleep walked through the season, and now have turned it up a notch.

  • mick Posted: May.19 at 2:54 pm
prediction – kobe shoot 35% in the finals

  • vtrobot Posted: May.19 at 3:09 pm
@ mj23: i know. it’s weird. he seems like a pretty smooth and fluid athlete, unlike more of a lumbering perk, but dwight’s offensive game, FT’s, etc. just looks so unnatural.

  • kriz Posted: May.19 at 4:08 pm
just put all my remaining money on the Cs to win the championship on sportsbook. they are going through the 4 best players in the league (wade, lebron, howard, kobe). their team D is the best in the L and kobe will struggle in half the games in the finals. get your money while you have good odds

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: May.19 at 4:11 pm
@vtrobot; to answer your question: ‘doesn’t SVG ever exercise, even by accident, during ORL practices? dude is like a ball wearing a dark polo shirt.’ Yes, SVG do in fact work out, his training-regiment is called ‘Busty Miami Blondes’ and he goes through it three times a day.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: May.19 at 4:12 pm
Boston in 4, then 7. Rondo Finals MVP, he’s going to straight up melest Fisher.

  • Lz - Cphfinest3 Posted: May.19 at 4:13 pm
Boston in 4, then 7 vs. LA. Rondo for Finals MVP – he’s going to destroy Fisher.

  • BETCATS Posted: May.19 at 4:52 pm
Im still getting used to the idea of another Celtics Lakers finals. If it happens, im going with the same end result as last time.

  • topo Posted: May.19 at 5:02 pm
all this talk about the the boston 3 peat if kg had been healthy? if Bynum and Ariza had been healthy in the 08 finals L.A. would be preparing for a 3peat i hope boston makes it to the finals just so that they get a taste of their own medicine

  • beenie Posted: May.19 at 6:08 pm
man I gotta give it up to the C’s with the way they been playing, hot at the right time, and L’A better be ready, these C’s are going to beat the hell out of them. and for orlando, they just ain’t making shots that’s all. cold at the wrong time, plus ya’ll know dwight don’t have the skills to be your go to guy, if that happens that mean you are in big trouble, even though I respect his presence on the court

  • kriz Posted: May.19 at 6:27 pm
@ topo. ariza barely played that year. Lakers werent winning that series. last year they might have beaten the Cs if the Cs had garnett bc ariza was playing great D, hitting shots, and his long arms were causing havoc (obviously not the only reason). think artest is not as good a fit as ariza was. if kobe and gasol share shots then i give LA a great chance to win, but usually kobe is kobe and tries too much

  • Conoro Posted: May.19 at 7:14 pm
Los Angeles v. Boston Finals Lakers in 6.

  • The Seed Posted: May.19 at 7:15 pm
@kriz—-Kobe is Kobe tries too much is the dumbest statement ever, what you want him to be like Lebron and try to less. SHUT UP. PLUS ORLANDO WILL WIN IN SEVEN GAMES BOOK IT!!!

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: May.19 at 7:16 pm
Allenp: This Boston team wouldn’t be able to contain Ewing at all, let’s be real. All the great centers can find a way to score on good defenders. Ewing would own Big Baby, Sheed, and Perkins, (AND Dwight).

  • KobeWearsAPurpleThong Posted: May.19 at 7:24 pm
    1) His Twitter was in fact hacked 2)Enough with this “not performing” BS. Celtics are playing their best bball of the year. Perk, ‘Sheed and co. have Howard frustrated and basically have shut him down. They have also (finally) got out on Orlando’s 3 pt. shooters and made them pretty much a non-factor so far. 3)Howard is not a leader. During crucial moments last night, when his team was fighting for their playoff lives, he could be seen laughing & smiling. He just doesn’t have that edge, that fire. And he never will.

  • The Seed Posted: May.19 at 7:47 pm
There are some other players who don’t have the edge or fire or ablitiy to lead in crucial points and they are called a ______. Orlando needs to start Piertis over Basketball wife Barnes and have Brandon Bass play if Lewis continues to play like Joe Johnson.

  • orl.chris Posted: May.20 at 12:14 am
@The Seed – agreed man. I was screaming at my TV all game long wondering why Bass wasnt being subbed in for Lewis. I love Rashard and all, but if he’s going to play like this all series long I’d rather he get zero minutes – get Bass and Ryan Anderson in the game, see if they play with some heart…

  • KobeWearsAPurpleThong Posted: May.20 at 1:04 am
@TheSeed & orl.chris I felt the same way earlier in the year when ‘Sheed was playing like crap-I said “throw Shelden Williams in-he’ll play with heart.” But then it hit me-Shelden didn’t get in and neither will Bass or Anderson. Guys like ‘Sheed and ‘Shard make too much damn money-if they are benched (especially in the playoffs where it’d never happen anyway) the owners will have a fit. Unfortunately, the NBA is run by the almighty $$$. Owners and execs shell out too much $ in salary and advertising to have their superstars on the bench..
