Celtics Part-Owner Confronted David Stern About Officiating

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Doc Rivers has spent much of his time with the media in the last 48 hours complaining about the officials. He whined about inconsistency, Paul Pierce’s inability to get going due to foul trouble, and accused Derek Fisher of being a flopper.

Apparently, that wasn’t enough for the C’s. One of their part owners reportedly got up in David Stern’s grill about the zebras following his team’s Game 3 loss.

From the Boston Globe:

A Celtics minority owner could face a fine by the NBA after a verbal confrontation with commissioner David Stern following the Celtics’ 91-84 Game 3 loss to the Lakers Tuesday night at TD Garden.

According to multiple sources with knowledge of the encounter, Jim Pallotta, angry at the officiating that included three reviewed calls in the fourth quarter, confronted Stern and apparently said the league should be embarrassed at the officiating in the series.

Historically, owners who have been publicly critical of officials have received six-figure fines. Stern told reporters at an NBA Cares event in Roxbury yesterday that it wouldn’t be Celtics-Lakers without complaints about the officiating. The NBA officially had no comment on the incident, while a Celtics spokesman said he was unaware of it.

“No comment” will obviously not be enough of a statement from the League; it’ll be interesting to see what they up doing about this reported incident, if anything.

The NBA Finals have placed an unfortunate spotlight on the officials. And stories like this certainly don’t help. Tonight’s game — and the way it’s going to officiated — will be fascinating, and undoubtedly frustrating for one side.

I smell desperation on the Celtic’s end. The officiating is affecting both teams yet only one is complaining!!!

  • Omnixyience

    really?! guess they’re desperate..
I think Adam Morrison should also
go to the commissioner and demand to have
a playing time ’cause PJ won’t let him play. LOL

  • http://albayanos.com LeoneL

Hmmm.. I guess I’m too young but is there such an outcry as what we are seeing today regarding refs back in the days? I mean like during the Bulls heyday.

I guess what I’m trying to ask is whether the officiating has gone worse or people whine more nowadays.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

Totally agree with javy but in terms of offciating affecting the series lakers 45% to the celtics 55% imo

  • ripslam

The Lakers have been getting most of the calls. That’sa fact, and as usual Stern is going to turn a blind eye to it.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

Btw Mr.Palotta stop whining as you now know how sactown felt back in 2002 and if this is just an embarresment then 2002 was a total abberation

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

@Leonel. In the early 1990′s and before, the internet was not in full swing yet. Nowadays blogs and comment boards provide a platform for fans to gripe about the officiating and scrutinize them heavily in a public arena. People who did not even watch the game are able to watch 2 minute highlights of the game or even just a clip of a questionable call and then voice their opinions for everyone to see and hear. It’s sort of the trendy thing to do, especially when the media monkeys are all over it. That being said, I also think that the game is officiated differently nowadays due to rule changes (no hand checking, 5 second backdown, etc). But I do believe that the heavy scrutiny is most to blame. Anyone who has ever officiated any contact sport, on even the most recreational level, knows how extremely difficult it is…

  • peter

Didn’t hear Doc rivers complaining when Kobe was hit with his 3rd and 4th fouls in Game 2…the got one, the lakers got one. Evens

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

Oh yea…and I smell the stench of desperation. Celtics absolutely NEED this game tonite.

  • The D Train

I will say that I love Lakers fans. Kobe actually gets some of the BS calls AGAINST him for one game out of about 10 years and Lakers fans throw that sh1t around as the “Yeah, we get screwed by the refs too, so it’s totally even.” Seriously, the fact that the Lakers are prominently involved in playoff debates regarding the refs for many years over should be some kind of an indication of why people piss and moan when the Lake-Show is involved. Yes their teams are usually better than the rest, but that is exactly why it ticks people off when they get “perceived” favorable treatment over the years.

  • Javy

I just heard ESPN radio mention that the trick Pierce pulled on national tv with the wheelchair in 08 was a management decision.
They literally will do anything to win!!….Literally!!

  • memyselfand9

intersting when phil does this you call it mind games.
he even does it before the series even started.
he did it beofre they played okc, the suns and boston.
    talk about whining laker fanboy.

  • http://albayanos.com LeoneL

Thanks Jellos, I’m also thinking about the Internet having something to do with this increased criticism of the refs.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

More contact was allowed back in the day and it was just accepted as part of the game.
Like I said, Stern changed up the game to respond to fans and the media.
Had to increase scoring and decrease fighting to placate people who found the league too boring and too urban.
    Wizards Second Rule.

  • Fat Lever

Ok, so if the officials swallow their whistle and let them play, you’re telling me that either the Lakers and/or Celts aren’t going to complain that fouls are being committed but not called? Stop whining, both teams, and just go out there and play. I admit that the flow of the games so far have been terrible, but if the Celts and Lakers are veteran teams like they claim to be, they would/should shut up and just play.

  • mick

    nba is becoming wwe (fixed)

  • jumpman3224

those darn officials forced Allen into 0-13 shooting.

  • Dallas Stokes

I wonder if the refs got fined for bad calls like the players do would it be as bad?

  • Celts Fan

There also only used to be 2 refs, so there were less people feeling like they had to make a call.

  • KH

    stop whining

  • The Lister Blister

@The D. If you watch a lot of Lakers games you would actually realise that Kobe does not get a lot the so called “superstar calls” that players like Wade and Lebron gets. He does get favourable treatment from time to time, but in no way as often as other “star” players do. Like the GM who previewed the celtics-lakers series on espn also pointed out, Kobe earns more of his calls than most other star players, and he does not get the same amount of touch fouls called on the opposition like others do.

  • mike

i hope they get heavy fines. I feel like everytime Stan Van Gundy says anything, he gets fined by Stern

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Cosign memyself. Funny the descritive words marceluses. If I didnt know, it would be hard to tell which team he wasa fan of. And the vast majority of calls have gone in the lakers favor, so what else is new

  • FreeWayne

I feel like everyone’s complaining, so that must say something right? If all the teams are complaining about the refs, how many times can the NBA come back with an answer of no comment?
Another thought. If the refs actually let the players play, without contact calls but obviously travels, double drib etc. Who do you think would win, LA or Celts?

  • http://twitter.com/pdxgaybball dma

@mick becoming? it’s been fixed for a while. it’s not a sports league, but rather sports entertainment

  • KoBynum716

ray allen was boned game 1, kobe game 2, both sides have had terrible calls against them. I feel like the refs are gonna take it 6 games and let em play game 7

  • Tommy Patron

Officiating has been a total embarasment. The fans are getting screwed worse than the Lakers or Celtics.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

@ Tarzan: the vast majority of calls went to the Lakers in game 2 when LA shot way more free throws. Correct me if I’m wrong, but KG did play like $hit didn’t he? And Perkins?…. Lesbehonest. I think I recall Bynum playing possibly his most complete game to date, and Gasol rip’n Kg for the second straight game. Yup, No late heroics from baby in game 2…in FACT would u believe me if I told u Ray Allen was red hot & broke a finals record for made 3pters! The C’s were living on jump shots while LA was eating up the paint. Last time I checked u don’t get many calls shooting open jump shots, but that’s just me. I’m glad the C’s are focused on the refs though and NOT themselves. Btw ur team lost because thier savior from game 2 went from playing like Reggie Miller to playing like Oliver Miller. That and a guy named Fish. There have been plenty of bad calls gone both ways, but honestly after the loss in game 2 I was more frustrated with our stars bad play (not the bad calls that took him outta the game) And his/ the Lakers failure to play thru it & close out the game, rather than allow the opposing point gaurd to go on a tear n’ put the game away. Sound farmilliar?

  • roman

Stop comparing Doc to Phil. Yeah Phil usually throws his little two cents in before a series starts, but never has he sent tapes to the league. I guess when your desperate, you will do anything to win.

  • Vince5

@ ripslam: As a matter of fact, after 3 games, the Celtics received 9 more fouls than the Lakers. It’s not that much but still. It’s not about the quantity, it’s about the quality.

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

To all the conspiracy theorists… Go away if this game is so fixed and boring. You all look like even bigger morons by making these claims and still paying attention. Go watch ‘Merican football or stickball.

  • topo

haha!!! desperation kicking in in beantown!!! how embarassing

  • UnRel

The Lister Blister.. is actually correct.. i watch every laker game.. and he doesn’t get the same ‘star’ treatment as other stars do.. we all know that supstars get the calls.. but kobe doesn’t seem to get them as easy as others.. let’s remember the whole.. ‘un-natural basketball movement’ rule that kobe was suspended for.. how many other stars can just bully their way to the cup?

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Fines a plenty should be sent down by Emperor Stern! No one talks bad about his league and refs and gets away with it. No one! If Kerr and Cuban were hit with fines for thinking out loud then this forth coming should be huge.

  • barnabusb

I think a really important question for last game is whether the refs would have called KG for that offensive foul at the end of the game if Pau didn’t flop like he was shot with a cannon. That was a HUGE call and maybe it wouldn’t have happened if Pau manned up and didn’t exaggerate like he did.

  • UnRel

so the refs are at fault for the poor play of paul pierce?.. fouls or not.. he’s playing like garbage.. ron-ron is making him work.. and he’s talking more than he’s walking.. a real boston fan would even admit that this isn’t the same pierce.. refs are not to blame for his poor performance..

  • MP73

While Phil Jackson may mention things for the refs to look at, Doc Rivers is crying which is gonna turn the refs on him. And for him to cry about flopping and moving picks while his team lives off those is dumb.

  • topo

  • vtrobot

“only one is complaining!!!” Mmmmooohhhaaaaahahahahahahahahahahah hah hahahhaha. The officiating has been atrocious. EVERYONE has, rightfully, been b*tching. dave stern notices the outrage, right? he’s working on making this better, right? hockey looks f*cking good in HD nowadays. i still can’t bring myself to watch it over the NBA but man, so little f*cking drama over there. it’s enticing.

  • KulchaKris

With each passing finals game, Tim Donaghy seems more and more credible. That said, I don’t believe the refs are part of some grand conspiracy. They’re just inept, simple as that. While foul calls do impact the game, can any impartial viewer really point to fouls as the reason Boston lost games 1 & 3? Or L.A. lost game 2? Just as an example, Boston may have likely won game 3, had Jesus Shuttlesworh gone 4-13 instead of 0-13. But that’s just me.

  • http://brimartin13@gmail.com Brion

It seems like Kobe used to get the “star treatment” calls a lot more in the past, but he continuously would b*tch after every non call to the point where the refs were getting sick of it.

  • Yesse

This is desperate by Celtics. They gave alot of bad calls for both teams.

  • Anthony

Funny cause I heard a Boston fan here saying “you will only hear L.A complains about the officiating”

  • http://kamndestiny@yahoo.com swisha sweet

negativekreep your not an analyst, ur in on every form bloggin how u like la 1 day then its the celts da next, u should just shut n jump on the laker bandwagon, keep ur dry comments to urself no one reads those big ass blogs.personlly i dont your full of s””…………..

  • http://twitter.com/pdxgaybball dma

i’m just waiting for derek fisher and ray allen to fight. inevitable

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Would this be a good time to point out extreme league bias towards lal? Pau gasol trade, set up between buss and west. Stern okd it.

  • DreXnaW21

the refs feel like they’re playing the game :P

  • Josh

There seems to be such a focus on officiating right now but it doesn’t help when every player on the celtics jump up and down and run around the court when a call is made. It makes it look like every call is the worst call ever. I would start handing out tech and fining players when they put on a show like that.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

u guys know people hate the lakers because a) they’re in LA and people who don’t live in LA just don’t like LA people that much (just like how people outside the US don’t like US citizens a whole lot either) b)they win alot, and people hate on that c) the hollywood glamour makes them seem like primadonnas while the milwaukee bucks are the blue collar every day man (no they’re not.. they still make millions) d) they get talked alot about getting calls because they play in alot of playoff games, and if people are biased, either for or against a team, u can find a way to justify your argument.

it’s just like when u get lowlights of a player u will think they suck. it doens’t make sense.

@tarzan- u conveniently forgot the garnett trade? (the younger gasol i would take over al jefferson) they also got ray allen almost for free? that’s two against 1.. so it’s really boston bias?

  • Anthony

btw what’s the point on blaming the refs when Pierce is 5-12 and Allen 0-13, I dont get it.

  • http://slamonline.com J Dizzle

I think that the refs were worried this would be a really physical series and are calling it a little tighter than usual. There have been a few bad calls on both sides, but overall I wouldn’t say its enough to favor one side or the other. Honestly, I see bad calls in every NBA game. They are little whistle happy this series, but they aren’t deciding the games.

  • http://slamonline.com J Dizzle

And Tarzan, if both teams want to make the trade, why wouldn’t Stern okay it? It’s not his job to say a team can’t trade its best player. That’s the GM’s job…

  • BostonBaller

A must win yes, desperation no. As far as doc complaining i went back to that blog and this is his quote after a question “You know, every single game so far we’ve had one of our top players in foul trouble,” “Maybe I should start complaining about fouls. Maybe I can get a turnaround like it was turned around tonight. That was amazing.” I think he was referring to Jax working the refs..either way that is mild. I like when Jax messes with the media, refs & players. no harm. As far as the 1st comment on this blog..get real dude, only one team complaining?

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Jl, al jeff is a 20 10 guy, gomes is a nice player, they traded away a few other decent pieces too. All pau cost lal was his brother, who is ok, kwame and javaris. I dare u to tell me without looking it up which team kwame plays for. Seattle got a high draft pick that year, jeff green, and some others I cant remember. So which is the lowest, al jeff, gomes and co, jeff green, or marc. Clearly marc. And what makes it worse is jerry west was shopping gasol, chi offerd some combo of gordon deng, nocioni, thomas, etc. Jerry said no, he wanted a beetter offer. West quit, a year later had his puppet chris wallace trade pau to lal for nearly nothing. So it cost lal way less than ray and kg cost boston, and pau is clearly way better than those two at this point in their careers. Jdizzle, wtf kinda name is that?, its sterns job to keep things fair and competitive. Its alot more shady when jerry west quits, then has wallace do the trade that greatly benefits lal, the team west has very strong connections with. Its the obvious consensus that the pau trade was the biggest steal of a trade.

  • BostonBaller

As far as Kobe not getting star treatment like Wade or LBJ, come on man he gets it and he deserves it. Superstars get calls and I don’t mind that at all but don’t sit there and pretend it doesn’t happen especially if someone from the media says it. If LBJ was in the finals they’d say that about him too. Before you try to come at me reread my words and save your futile attempts. That blog Rivers & KG unhappy w/ calls was funny b/c the answers they gave weren’t heavy whinning especially KG’s but the heading suggested more. lol.

  • BostonBaller

The officiating hasn’t directly cost any team a game no matter how bad it’s been but it does matter WHEN calls are made. It sucks if your top guy gets early fouls b/c they can’t get going. That’s not a complaint that’s a fact. I don’t play much any more but I coach and ref. I’m the only coach who is asked to ref during the same league games (kids and teams) I say that b/c reffing games is tough.

  • BostonBaller

@JL u guys know people hate the Celtics because a) they’re in Boston and people who don’t live in Boston just don’t like Boston people that much (just like how people outside the US don’t like US citizens a whole lot either) b)they win alot, and people hate on that c) the Boston History & Higher education institutes makes them seem like snobs while the milwaukee bucks are the blue collar every day man (no they’re not.. they still make millions) d) they get talked alot about getting calls because they play in alot of playoff games. lol see how easy it is to interchange things to prove your point? @Tarzan, I never thought of the 2 trades quite like that but you have some good points there. and not just b/c it favors us. lol. I hated to let Jefferson and Gomes go but I knew it needed to be done. Marc Gasol has gotten a lot better though.

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

For the first time in marcs life, he came into a season in good shape, and who are the other mem centers? Hamad and hasheem. Zach was the backup center. Kobe gets superstar calls. And most ppl have false conceptions of both la and boston.

  • nastierthanu

Hey minority owner. DJ que M.O.P. Ante up son. Come of sterns paper. If I could fine somebody 6 figures I’d make 2 terrible calls a game. Stern B!tch. If u don’t know u better ask mark cuban

  • dfortruth

That’s because Boston can’t win without bullying the Lakers. I guess the refers made sure Fisher was out of the game tonight. And poor Pal, they are beating the hell out of him.

Cry again Doc,Kevin, and Paul, see if the refers help you out next time.
The refs are making sure that there are 7 games. Get that money.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com Hoopistani

by the way, that 3-second call on KG when only four seconds were off the shot clock was the worst call of the finals.

  • BostonBaller

I’m not sure about the worse call but it’s top 3 then again on sheer how is that even a call meter it’s #1. that blocking call on Kobe was bad last night. Seeing it live as a ref maybe (just maybe) they thought he wasn’t set? Bullying? I’d say LA has gotten in plenty of hard playoff fouls themselves so please don’t start with the stereotyping.

  • rikson

“Like the GM who previewed the celtics-lakers series on espn also pointed out, Kobe earns more of his calls than most other star players” -> earn calls??? Fairness: not here!

  • era

I do not really have a problem with close calls that show to be wrong on the replay (like kobes block on pierce or allens block on kobe the other way)
What I do have a problem with are calls that are made without any reason to call anything, like the 3secs on garnett or more so the foul on wallace pulling the chair (even if he fouled him, gasol was alone 3ft away from the hoop, why not just let him score and let the game move on).
Thats why I liked the officiating yesterday. The refs let em play for most of the time and the game actually had some flow. More of an ugly, stinkin sewer flow than a nice clean mountain waterfall flow, but anyways….

  • http://www.stuffwhitepeoplelike.com Tarzan Cooper

Yea, the only terrible calls in game 4 went against boston. That insane 3 sec call, and two of sheeds fouls. The kobe block/charge was close.
