Chris Bosh: ‘I’m Not an Addition. I’m a Centerpiece’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Chris Bosh is one of the top free agents this summer. A solid big, one of the best in the League in fact, but he always seems to get overlooked when the discussion of this year’s big free agent class comes up.

Well, Bosh wants it to be known that he’ll no longer take a backseat. Chris believes he has what it takes for some lucky team to build around him, and win a championship.

NBA.com has the quotes:

“I don’t want to be mentioned as an addition to a team,” Bosh recently told NBA Entertainment. “I want to be mentioned as the guy that people want to center their team around.”

“I’m not an addition. I’m a centerpiece,” he said. “I have to have that confidence in myself, and I want people to know that, because I’m not somebody that helps out. I’m the guy you get like, ‘Yo, we’re going to win a championship, you’re gonna take us there.’

“I want to hold onto that because I think every kid when they dream about playing basketball, they don’t dream about being a role player. They dream about being the man. I have that position in Toronto and to give that up and go somewhere else to be an addition would kinda defeat the purpose of my dreams.”

If he’s already a “centerpiece” in Toronto, it’s a bit confusing that Bosh feels the need to tell the world that he is that dude (a statement that remains very much in doubt.)

July 1st can’t get here soon enough, if only for the fact that when it does, Chris Bosh and friends will thankfully no longer need to remind us of their value.

    First!
    You’re not even a Center!

  • http://slamonline.com JL

so he’s staying? maybe he can be centerpiece but his O-game needs to be dominant, not just very good.

  • vanillagorrila

Yeah, he is still just a poor man’s pau with a tendency to choke in clutch situations. He is the ideal 2nd option tho as a pf with a powerful defensive 5 to make up for his lack of any post defense. Its going to be interesting to see if his pride ruins his chances of winning a ring. My guess is it will.

  • vanillagorrila

I don’t think being somebody’s pippen is that big of a problem Bosh.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

you’ve been the centerpiece for a few years now, bosh. how has that worked out for you?

  • jumpman3224

well we know how he voted in today’s slamonline poll…thought that was supposed to be private

  • floe

refer to comments to verify i called this first. dude’s gonna take a big chunk off the salary cap for the raptors the next few years and then realise he was never good enough to lead a team and then sign with boston/lakers/et al.

also, hope lebron and wade end up playing together like i think they will.

  • CoraSong

    Hahahaha @ flash!

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

I guess this means he won’t be teaming up with Lebron or Wade. ..

  • http://www.dimemag.com AMG

The “RuPaul of big men”. One of Shaq’s best ever.

  • Silverselectjd

    Guess that rules out LA.

  • Str8in It Out

I wonder if Pau thought like this before he got his two rings alongside Kobe. Teaming up with other superstars (who may be considered better) just makes the game easier for everyone and allows everyone to become a role player. wallow your pride Chris. Don’t get lost in the sauce.

  • Str8in It Out

I wonder if Pau thought like this before he got his two rings alongside Kobe. Teaming up with other superstars (who may be considered better) just makes the game easier for everyone and allows everyone to become a role player. Swallow your pride Chris. Don’t get lost in the sauce.

  • Javy

Yeah!! I know what you mean Nowitsky, ……….I mean Bosh!

  • Cool Dude

Pau just wanted to get out of the Grizzlies. I really want to see Wade with Bosh tbh, creating the Lakers of the east. Can you imagine the finals? Wade vs Kobe. Bosh vs Gasol. Riely vs PJ.

  • LB

Wow, come on, dude. I love Chris Bosh’s game and i like that he’s got that confidence in himself, but the results speak for itself. Even Vince Carter had more postseason success being the “Man” in T. Dot than Chris Bosh.

  • OneStep

Well I suppose you’re about to get a nasty reality check then Mr Bosh. Nothing about your career so far has ever suggested you are or could be a centrepiece. You are and will continue to be a great second option. Accept this, be at peace with it and enjoy a fruitful career.

  • Yesse

Sure, Bosh can play and he is an all star, but for a championship team he wouldnt probably be the best player. Maybe second best or third best.

  • 8ight

Why is there a picture of Whoopi Goldberd on the SLAM homepage in connection with this post?

  • kh

When will these dudes realize that there is nothing wrong with playing alongside another great player in order to get it done! Get over yourself Bosh.

  • robert stewart

he looks like michael jackson in this pic. minus the bleached skin

  • Exiled Zebra

He could go to the clips. Kaveman, bosh, griffin, gordon, bdizzle. Vry nice

  • Chris

This quote was what he said at the BEGINNING of the season. Anyone that thinks he would give up a chance to be on a team with Kobe or Lebron is out of their mind.

  • Sweetness

That kind of attitude isn’t going to take him far.

  • LD

LOL @ Chris Bosh. Then why don’t you just lead Toronto to a championship. If you’re the centerpiece, it doesn’t matter were you go.

  • underdog

If CB wants to win anyithing he must team up with at least one star player, and he knows that. He should just ask KG.

  • http://dsfrjklfl.com JukaI

Bottom line: Pau Gasol would disappear into history as a semi-talented power forward who had one or two all-star games and never really did anything in the NBA… now he’s going to be viewed as a top-15 all time PF by winning two championships.
Just cause yer not the ‘man’ doesn’t mean history wont remember you incredibly fondly. I don’t think this is a good attitude for Bosh to have.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

If Chris Bosh is a centerpiece of a team — that team sucks.

  • Neon

“We don’t believe you/ you need more people!”

  • Joe

What team ever, in the history of the NBA has won a title with just 1 superstar, or “centerpiece” and no secondary All-Star?………..lets take a walk down memory lane…….(Kobe/Pau),(Big 3),(Spurs Big 3),(D-Wade/Shaq,(Spurs Big 3),(Pistons starting 5),(Spurs Big 3 again),(Shaq/Kobe),(Duncan/Admiral),(Jordan &Pip),(Hakeem/Drexler),(Jordan&Pip)…..ok I think you get the point, if not then your name is Chris Bosh!

  • http://4Aitkenroad,Hamilton,ScotlandML37YA Hambone

    even ru-paul needs elton john

  • Tommy Patron

Keep this softie the F out of Chicago.

  • Elias

If he wants to be a Laker, he can’t have that attitude, if you’re Kobe then you can, but not if you’re Chris Bosh. If Bosh came to the Lakers for Bynum, he’d be like the number 2 or 3 guy on the team, and Bosh and Gasol would be soft. I don’t really like Bosh, heplays too Europian, and I’m from Europe and I can tell you that European basketball sucks, I’d rather watch WNBA.

  • Paul Johnson

    soft as cookie dough…

  • RedRum

hahahah!!! thank you CB, you made me laugh! had a crap day, you saying you want to be a leader really cracked me up!

  • http://www.kwapt.blogspot.com KobeWearsAPurpleThong

    He’s a napkin-holder at the very least.

  • deano

…in the same ways a coffee table is the centerpiece of a living room, CB4 is the centerpiece of a franchise. lets be real dude, you are a 200lb big-man, you haven’t yet proven to be the center of anything…..he’s gonna have to change this attitude and soon

  • http://facebook D00m

what ever happend to Blake Griffen

  • Exile

I don’t think he’s saying that he doesn’t want to team up with LBJ or Flash. He just wants to do it in the role of the big two, or three rather than robin to their Batman.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

He is just saying this so people will think he isn’t totally dissing Toronto. Bosh will be LeBron or Wade’s Pippen by the time free agency is over.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep
  • http://twitter.com/pdxgaybball dma

LOL @ Joe leaving out the celtics. well played.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

well chris you can be an addition to a centerpiece on a great team (LAKERS) or you can be with a buddy (DWYANE) and begin a new dynasty and oh how would i love that.

  • Javy

For those of you who have watched MJ, Magic, Bird, etc: this proves a point when money gets in the head of young players. Look at Lebron, the pose before the games, the celebrations, the smoke up in the air. Then Superman having biceps made of rock and the will made of powder. Now Bosh asking for respect since he’s managed to accomplish….ummm…ummm…sorry can’t recall what he’s won. Arenas not caring about excellence but instead about signing a fat contract.
Be glad Kobe is still around otherwise Wade would be our only hope.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

Now that AI is returning I hope he signs with Miami: Iverson, Wade, Bosh or Boozer could form a Big 3 capable of winning the East. Iverson would have no problem taking a back seat to D-Wade he knows Wades better at this point.

  • cp3fan

You can’t build a championship team around him. He will have to play with LeBron or D-Wade if he wants to try to win a championship. And either way, I don’t see a Wade-Bosh or Bron-Bosh combination being able to beat the Lakers in the Finals. People act like one of those two combinations will guarantee a championship….you need a few more players to play with too lol. It’s not 2 on 2…it’s five on five.

  • gani

i think bosh proved last season how much of a ‘centerpiece’ he is. this guy needs a big serving of humble pie or something.

  • alexz

IM NOT A DINOSAUR! IM NOT A DINOSAUR!

  • http://www.nbaballhog.wordpress.com God in Basketball Shoes

When will athletes learn to put their arrogance to one side to improve their pursuit of winning? you really have to wonder how badly these modern athletes want to win. Look at Wilt joining a team with Elgin and West. You think those two were angry when they got the Stilt? You think O was upset when Lew joined the Bucks? Modern athletes feel that they need arrogance to give them the confidence to compete with the best and dominate their sport. That is well and good, but keep it to yourself, internalise that sh*t and use it to your advantage, don’t shout it to the world and make yourself look like a d*ck. They care so much about money but seem to forget the benefits and exposure that winning championships brings.

  • Exiled Zebra

Dma is dumb. And joe, what about 94 rockets? Who was second superstar on that team? Elie? Horry? Hakeem is the only example of a single star led team winning a title

  • giogolo

Goodluck Bosh. Evrybody hears seems to see u really as the side dish that you are.

  • Buschfire

I’m from Toronto, and even when they started to try and build around Bosh a few years ago, i felt he wasn’t the right guy to build around… sure he get his 20 n 10 night in and out, but honestly wheres the leadership? wheres the intensity? He’s a great player, and to be honest I hope he stays, because we’re not getting a whole lot in return and without him the Raptors are gonna have to start from scratch, maybe thats an itch i’m willing to accept… but we need another perrenial all star on this team…and not an old Steve Nash, even though that has been a dream of mine since I was younger…and so was Nash… Its really a shame Toronto can’t attract any real mainstream talent for long periods of time….Americans just don’t seem to like Canadia land…(super rich athlete Americans that is)

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

LOL @ people saying Bosh is a poor man’s Pau. Just because Pau fits in as a SECOND OPTION on the Lakers doesn’t mean he is better than Bosh. Get your facts straight, Pau Gasol only averaged over 20 ppg ONCE in his career (in Memphis), and NEVER averaged over 10 boards per game by himself.
Chris Bosh is far better as a number 1 option than Pau Gasol ever was.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Where does this sense of underrating come from? If you’re lucky enough to land a Chris Bosh, YOU KEEP HIM. You build around whatever you have, and try and make a balanced TEAM. Wow @ the people who expect every 23 and 11 player to play second fiddle to LeBron James or Dwyane Wade or Kobe Bryant. Those are THREE freaking players out of hundreds.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

As a Laker fan, I would take Bosh over Gasol, because Gasol was do do in Memphis. Gasol looks better because of the triangle offense and winning with Kobe. Bosh can play that role too and to me take over games better than Gasol. The raptors lose because they play no defense, not because Bosh can’t play. Bosh is not a poor man’s Pau, he is actually better. If Gasol was playing in Memphis yall cats would be saying the same thing about Gasol, like yall are saying about Bosh, except Gasol trade caught everyone by surprise.

  • giogolo

As Chris Bosh, he wouldn’t go into any team as he said, if you’re just planning to make him an addition? Get that? You two upstairs? The raptor said it.

  • Robb

@The Seed are you f**** nuts???

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

    @the seed: youre officially retarded

  • e

LOL LOL can you actually picture bosh putting an entire team on his back give me a break but i love the fact he is confident in his abilities but somehow reality has to kick in

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

without Gasol Kobes Lake Show was an 8th seed, dont get me wrong, Kob´s still the best in the business till Bron do smthin bout it but this possible LA dinasty was made happen cause Pau put everything in place…you eva noticed when the Lakers dominate an opponent Kob has allways no more than 15/18 shots and plenny of assists…when he ball hogs thyere in deep sh1t like in game 7

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

as for Bosh, hes an IDEAL SECOND OPTION JUST LIKE PAU! no more, no less..only Pau is even better all around, OBVIOUSLY..they could not make the plaoffs with him as the man for god´s sake! IN DA EAST NO LESS

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@Jukai: semi talented?, are you a joker or just dumb? we can all agree he wouldnt have gone anywhere near a ship as a first option in Memphis but its A FACT how freakin talented he is and how LA IS MORE EFFECTIVE WHEN THEY GO TO HIM either in the low or high post as a triple threat.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

    cosign Joe

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

    stfu elias

  • LD

    LeBron thinks he’s the King
    Kobe thinks hes Jordan
Now CB thinks he’s a center piece

  • Jose

I got mad Respect for CB4 but centerpiece need that leadership and Bosh i jus don’t see that in him to be real. I mean when u look at the raptors you know bosh is their dude but compare to MIA and CLE where u see Wade/Bron as the Man, the leader. theres a huge gap from what bosh is for the raps compare to Flash/LBJ for their teams

  • nastierthanu

Girl u know its true. Don’t stop the love ooh ooh ooh I love u. I hope he not lip synching anymore.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

great. just what the nba needs, more ego. he’s a very very good player, but he’s not dominant enough to be a center piece. i’d say he’d work best alongside a dominant perimeter player and a physical, defensive-minded center.

  • http://twitter.com/dyalektraps d.Y.

    If Wishes Were Wins…

  • Ronald

@Those that believe it’s more important to win than to get as much money as possible. Honestly, 20 years down the road most people would rather be looking at their stable checkbooks than any superficial legacy. Unless, you’re like Jordan who can win AND get paid at the same time.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

something tells me Chris Bosh’s checkbook will be pretty stable 20 years down the road, regardless of where he signs.

  • http://kb24.com DreXnaW21

    Who’s Chris Bosh?

  • Neauxera

I really dont see why people are trippin about what he said. His game and his numbers don’t say he’s addition. What did you want him to say “I’m medicore, but pay me max money.” I don’t think so. He’s said what he had to say, end of story.

  • doyouwantmore

There’s a lot of people here who have spent more time typing out their criticism of Bosh than actually watching him play. He’s a character player, total leader, puts up numbers, very skilled, very athletic, and criminally slept on because half of you guys can’t find Canada on a map. I personally hope he stays up here, but I’ll root for him no matter where he goes.

  • ktokyo

Chris Bosh is not a centerpiece.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The Seed is right about Bosh vs. Gasol.
And Sporting Lisbon, Bosh is actually better than Gasol as an individual player. The only thing Gasol has on him is passing… Seriously, scoring/rebounding its no contest.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Although, Gasol fits in way better with the Lakers.

  • JoeMaMa

Bosh as the man. Okay, Bosh, then COME BACK TO TORONTO!!

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@teddy the bear: hes better if you see the players the only way you know how to: CB 23/11/2, 1blk VS Gasol 18/11/3, 2blks..like a 15 year old compares players!!lol…now I leave you with this, CB4 is a first option and Pau´s second AND ITS NOT JUST PASSING, ITS MUTCH MORE THAN THAT, HES 10 TIMES THE DEFENDER BOSH IS IN EVERY SITUATION FROM POST D TO P&R, or you think CB4 would neutralize Dwight in the finals?!..GASOL FOMINATED DWIGHT AND THE C´S FRONTCOURT, BOSH WOULDN´T EVEN COME CLOSE TO THAT..so reavaluate youre thinkin, its not allways the raw numbers you put up kids! with BYNUM WITH ONE LEG AND BARELLY PLAYIN, lol, its not even close!

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

    dominated i meant

  • BostonBaller

Who says a combo of these free agents have to stay in the East? I hope a group of them go West..please go West.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Haha. If you really have to verbally try and convince people you’re The Man, then you probably aren’t. Has Duncan ever had the need to say it? For most of Shaq’s career, he has been The Man – in fact when he went to Cleveland he had to emphasize that he WASN’T coming in to be The Man. Let your game do the talking, Chris.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

We like to give Bosh the benefit of the doubt, often with the excuse that his team has been inferior. But what about the two times his team made the playoffs? The first time Chris made the playoffs he was completely nullified by the Nets’ frontcourt, whose scariest player was Jason Collins. The next year, he gets predictably physically bullied by Dwight. Not “The Man” type performances by any standard.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

And let me qualify what I wrote with the fact that I really respect Bosh and his game. He’s the only Raptor that has given his all for the past few seasons. He’s played very well, tried his best guarding bigger players, played as good defense as you can expect a big man to play when surrounded by spineless teammates. He’s an All-NBA player and classy guy and I’ll miss him in a Raptors jersey. But centerpiece he most definitely is not, and if I were him I’d stop acting like he is one.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

Imagine if Chris gets his wish: instead of signing on in Miami or something as a lethal 2nd option, some junk team signs him as the sole “centerpiece” of a team, and surrounds him with the classic supporting cast complement to a centerpiece big man – wispy long-range jump shooters. It’ll be like the Toronto Raptors all over again! Salami and cheese, everyone.

  • Rikson

    No, hes an addition!

  • Morgan

And the subtitles read “I want to be paid like I’m a your centerpiece” – this guy doesn’t seem to care what he wins, just what his bank account/agent/baby’s momma wins.

  • JoeMaMa

On a separate note, can someone answer this for me? Why do max players get agents? If Chris/LeBron/Dwyane know they’ll get the max, why do they let an agent take a percentage? What Arenas did was the smartest move a player’s made for years: agree to less money, but without an agent. He gets the same amount as a max guy but saves the team about 10-15 million, which would’ve been the agent’s percentage, to go after other quality players. If you don’t want to sacrifice your money, but want to win, that seems like the best move. Am I wrong?

  • http://deleted KH10

He’s a free agent looking for a max contract, what is he supposed to say “actually yeah, im not all that” be serious.

  • Lloyd

As a Raptors fan, let me say that Bosh is a great player. He really could be the centerpiece of a team. Toronto has ZERO player development skills. Every player gets better and more successful after leaving the Raptors. If Bosh got that kind of help from a solid coaching staff, he’d be pretty damn impressive.

As to Pau vs CB4…CB4′s numbers are better than Pau’s because he’s the first option on the Raps. The ball goes to him on every play. With the Lakers Kobe gets the ball, if he doesn’t have a possible way to jack up a shot, Pau gets it. Also, Pau has something that can’t be shown on a stat sheet: the ability to perform in the clutch. Pau steps up time and time again. Bosh crumbles under pressure.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Y’all do realize that before Pau Gasol met Kobe he had never averaged 20 and 10, never won a playoff game, and got his buttocks opened by Dirk Nowitzki on the regular, right?
I find it funny that Gasol has just leapfrogged Dirk as the best big in the league, or that he’s considered better than Bosh. It’s really strange.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Co-sign Allenp.

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

    @Allenp: 2 rings will do that. =(

  • giogolo

If you play with the best in the NBA (teammtae, coach) and get exposed to high level competition everytime and you happen to be the starting center in your national team who won a world chip and took the usa to a very close olympic gold match-up, there’s no way to go but up.
Not one person competes for mediocrity. So gasol>bosh Now. It was already when he started with the lakers.

  • giogolo

ALso Gasol > Dirk now. During their respective starts not so much. Pau has improved that much and I don’t think he’ll be regressing especially with his play style and system he plays in anytime soon. He was made for the Triangle offense. On both ends of the court.
