No Major Changes in Orlando This Summer?

The Magic must make decisions on J.J. Redick, Matt Barnes, and Vince Carter heading into next season. GM Otis Smith tells the AP that no major shakeups should be expected in Florida: “Magic general manager Otis Smith wanted to be clear: He’s not looking to overhaul the roster again. Unless he does. One eye on the past and another on the future, the never-afraid-to-take-a-chance general manager doesn’t expect any major moves this offseason. Even after failing to return to the NBA finals, Smith believes Orlando already has the roster to win its first championship. ‘We’re not a team that’s that far away, so I can’t sit here and say, ‘Yeah, we’re going to make all these drastic changes because we’re miles away,’ Smith said Monday. ‘We’re not miles away. We’re not at the bottom third of our league. We’re at the top of our league. And with that said, we have to do things diligently and with the understanding of the aspect that we’re putting the team-slash-puzzle together and that everything is going to have to fit.’ Of course, that’s what he said last year. Then Smith made the bold move to part ways with Hedo Turkoglu — and starters Courtney Lee and Rafer Alston — and acquire Vince Carter from New Jersey. That decision may not have cost the Magic a title this season, but it wasn’t enough to win one.”

He does realize that a couple of teams in the East may become powerhouses with the free-agent moves they make, moving Orlando back to middle of the pack territory, since they, you know, regressed this season?

Turk def was not the reason we didnt make it, but Vince sure wasnt a help to get us there. We need a go to ball player that teams have to worry about on top of Dwight. Right now all they have to do is have Perkins or Bynum or Gasol on Dwight and it limits him. Jameer is no ROndo, and VC is way past his scoring days. I dont know what player in the league would fit into this mold and make us a winner other than Amare

Eboy has a point. NY, CHI, NJ, and Eboy’s own heat are all in position to make big moves…all of those teams were mediocre this year. Orlando is gonna have to play those teams a combined 15 or 16 times–even a little bit of improvement from them can bump Orlando down a few seeds…

Option A) They get a guy who can consistently get his from the perimeter against the big teams that don’t need to double down on Dwight. Option B) Dwight puts on SERIOUS work this summer and gets into the Shaq/TD/Dream in-their-prime zone. aka you’re not even THINKING about single covering these mofos or they might re-write the record book on your a–.

Hindsight is 20/20 but letting Hedo walk cost them a title. Their lineup last year was good enough to make it to the big dance. This year, with that same lineup and with Jameer healthy, they could have given LA a better fight. And Courtney Lee could have been better this year.

Sign and trade to Cleveland for Lebron..

Longshot but the Cavs would get the most back from the Magic. Magic have tons of pieces that they could ship out and the Magic would win the title for years to come. They could trade Rashard Lewis and Gortat and picks or something like that. It would give Cleveland a decent team and they could still make the playoffs next year even without Lebron. Magic would have to keep Bass or get some garbage PF’s.

Dwight is only what, 24, 25 years old? I think as long as he’s in their lineup, they’ll be contenders for the next ten years or so. I do agree with others though, some Eastern Conference teams are gonna make huge upgrades this summer.

get ridof that coach and jameer and the magic will b in much better shape

A lot of Eastern conference teams will make upgrades this summer to become contenders. Like the Wizards did last season? The Cavs made a lot of moves to, only to get bounced in the 2nd round. The Raptors made moves that people thought would put them in the top 4 in the east. This happens every summer. Just believe that if the Magic keep this roster, they will be stronger next year. Look at teams who have kept their core together lately, San Antonio, Boston, Lakers, they all get it done. Don’t think about Dallas and Denver haha.

what if Dwight left for the Lakers when he becomes a free agent?..am I the only one who thinks that would be hilarious?

my dream: trade vince to PHX for dragic. I would love to see this for next years starting lineup: C-Dwight PF-Bass SF-Lewis SG-Redick PG-Jameer, with Gortat, Anderson, Barnes, Pietrus and Dragic as the 2nd unit.

I think that has championship written all over it.

I guess they will be just like they where for the last two years. Actually they are worst this year than last. Good luck!

Vince Carter didn’t add anything to the Magic. He sucked during the playoffs. Rashard Lewis was on vacation throughout the playoffs. Jameer Nelson is a good player, but he is questionable as a point. If he was four inches taller he’d be a great off-guard. I say fire Van Gundy, bring in a pure point, trade Rashard Lewis for Amare Stoudamire or get Bosh, and add someone like John Salmons, along with a spark plug off the bench like Nate Robinson.

On that note, Nate Robinson is playing himself into a nice contract. The Magic sure could have used have instead of Jayson Williams. Then again, why did they trade Rafer again?

  • cc

they need someone else to attack the basket and not just camp on the three point line launching shots

  • orl.chris

@Jahi – agreed on the spark plug point. the magic need someone who can energize both the team and the crowd. i think we should keep shard though, just move him to the 3. we have talented players, i dont understand why we insist on running this wacky style when we could play conventional basketball and still be better than most of the league…

    Free Brandon Bass!

magic suckl flat out and next year theyll b the fifth seed at tops Miami will improve -lebrons team will improve -celts will b their-atl-phil-indiana gettn better every year the magic seem to b the only team goin in reverse oh yea the bulls gettin better wow i guess it really will b another 15 years for that organization reaches the finals again and dwight will b leavin as soon
    as that contract allows it

  • mellmeister

magic should trade for rudy gay… trade vince and include ryan anderson… :)

  • http://twincityslim@yahoo.com Jahi

Rudy Gay, Nate Robinson, R. Lewis at the (3), keep Matt Barnes, and fire Van Gundy. A wacky coach leads to a wacky style of basketball. a starting lineup of

Dwight Howard, Bass, Lewis, Gay, and Jameer would be exciting.
