Paul Pierce Facing Pressure to Deliver

Pierce’s offensive production has been hampered by Ron Artest’s stifling defense (and, as the Celtics would argue, the refs’ whistles), but his team needs him to come through in tonight’s must-win game. The Boston Herald implores the C’s captain to come through, in slightly hysterical fashion: “The Celtics trail the Lakers 1-2 in the NBA Finals for a lot of different reasons but the most glaring has been Pierce’s disappearance as a factor. In the most important series of the season he is shooting only 36.1 percent (13 of 36) and averaging nearly three points less per game than his playoff average. But more importantly too many of his points have come after the outcome was decided. While perhaps not coming totally at garbage time they at least came at litter time. In other words, they came when their effect was, for the most part, non-existent on the outcome. If the Celtics are to win their 18th NBA title this year, they not only want The Truth on that wall tonight, they need him on that wall. They need him to make plain to Ron Artest what Col. Jessup said to Lt. Kaffee: that despite early evidence to the contrary, ‘YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!’ The world that centers around the NBA has given Artest deserved props for the way he’s dropped a blanket over Pierce, but Pierce and the Celtics have not. Yesterday Doc Rivers was asked how much Artest is affecting Pierce’s production and claimed, ‘I don’t think he is. I don’t. I thought Paul is getting good shots. He’s not making some of them. Maybe Ron has something to do with that but if we get Paul in rhythm and get him on his spots, I feel very confident that Paul will have big games for the rest of the series.’ Unlike Lt. Kaffee, Doc Rivers knows he needs The Truth on that wall. He wants him on that wall. What The Truth has to do is climb up there with the same, unfettered mind of Col. Jessup and fire into the face of Ron Artest. It’s time for The Truth to be heard. It’s time for The Truth to order a ‘code green’ on the Lakers because if he doesn’t, it could be code red for the Celtics.”

This is exactly why going for Artest over Ariza was the right decision. He is doing a great job on Pierce. Although I guess Pierce was asked if it was just a coincidence that his worst games this season have come against Artest and he answered yes. I think Pierce and Artest will both be highly motivated to compete tonight. The Lakers need to have the “go for the throat” mentality and grab a stranglehold on this series.

If PP doesnt show up tonite, or is shut down by Artesticles (however you want to look at it), Boston = KLOSED!

  • T-Money

Aren’t all games must-win at this point?

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

T-Money-NO. Say the Lakers win Game 4, then Game 5 is not a must win for them. I could think of about 5 other scenarios that were not must win as well. Use your imagination.

  • Hangtime Hec

In the postseason, all games are must wins. I never really understood win player would say that.

  • jumpman3224

@cosign Hangtime Hec: when teams don’t approach games with that mentality that is when they lose their advantage in the series.

  • nicko

Girls PP when they see me

  • MAGIC FAN

andthejellosjigglin … really 5 scenarios. They are all must wins buddy

  • http://www.motherjones.com AndTheJellosJigglin

I disagree. Like I said-if the Lakers go up 3-1 then game 5 is not a must win, they go back home for 2 games if they lose. Simple.

I hope Ron Ron has read this comment by Rivers.

i think its time for PP’s wheelchair to get boston going!!

  • Fat Lever

Guys, he’s the best player in the world! C’mon, the best player in the world will show up in the Finals, right?! (Yes, I realize it was 2 years ago when he said that, but go with it).

  • vtrobot

yeah, they need bust out those defibrillator paddles and shock his heart after the first time he goes down. that would be all time. the wheelchair sh*t is so ’08. he’s got to keep upping the drama. i think we’re going to get a big dose of the truth tonight. let’s go, paul.

more recently he said he’s the best shooter. wait, what about his teammate ray allen? at least pp did win the 3 pt contest this year i guess. wow i totally missed it when quentin richardson won the 3pt contest 04-05. that makes zero sense. almost as little sense as daquan cook winning it too in 08-09.

  • vtrobot

if the C’s do win it all, don’t think that PP is going to hesitate before saying that he’s the best again. i hope i get to see that. sheed needs another ring.

I agree with Doc’s comment. I think Ron’s been doing as good a job as you can expect a guy to do against a player like Pierce: he’s not letting him live in the lane or at the free throw line, and he’s not letting him go on scoring binges. Still, Paul is getting to his spots for the most part, even if Ron’s been making that a little harder, and the shots he’s getting are good shots, so they’ll start falling soon.

    ^yeah, in game 8.

It’s not Ron Artest at all. Ron Ron was benched for Luke Walton early last game and Pierce missed three consecutive wide-open mid-range jumpers. Dude just sucks right now.

I agree that PDouble has to more than show up tonight and I don’t necessarily mean scoring. It would be really nice if he’d find the bottom of the basket but if not I’ll take 12 points, 7 rbs, 8 assts and a couple of charges taken as long as Ray wakes up and KG has the same type of game he did in 3. Oh yeah, it would be nice to see RR pushing the ball and going strong to the hole. Is it too much to ask for Kobe to go 0 for 20? i thought so. Let’s get it on folks!!

  • Samuel19d
