Sources: Al Jefferson Headed To Memphis?

As ESPN’s Chad Ford reports: “The Minnesota Timberwolves have been burning up the phone lines the last few days looking for a trade… Sources have told me that the Wolves and Grizzlies have been discussing a swap that would send Jefferson to the Grizzlies for Zach Randolph. The deal would allow the Wolves to save a lot of money over time. Randolph has one year, $17.6 million left on his contract. Jefferson has three years, $42 million left. According to sources, Randolph’s ongoing legal problems aren’t an impediment to Minnesota who is doing the trade in an effort to get out of Jefferson’s deal and free up more playing time for Kevin Love and potentially Derrick Favors if he falls to them with the No. 4 pick. It’s possible the Wolves could either waive Randolph or use his expiring contract to make another trade.”

This makes sense when you consider that there are rumors swriling everywhere that the Nets are taking Wes Johnson with the third pick, which means Favors would fall to the Wolves. But would you really want Favors being “mentored” by Z-Bo? Even if only for a year?

WTF, Zach Randolph was playing the best ball of his career in Memphis, he lost weight and everything. SLAM just wrote an article about him in the Jordan issue I think. But this would be hard to turn down.

    Another Kahn move hahah

Wow. Zach helped the Grizz so much this year and this is how they repay him? No wonder none of the rooks wanted try out for Memphis…

Better favors then cousins in mentoring from zach with all those immaturity problems…

it saves money. ZBo only has a year left at 17 mil. Big Al has 3 years left with around 40 mil due IIRC.

Taking that into account, it is not that bad of a deal.

Would be great for memphis. Is minny going into super youth movement? No one on the team whos been in the league more than 3 yrs? That old man corey brewer needs to be shipped out too

Something is not right, this trade actually makes sense.

  • LA Huey

Kahn knows that FC Barcelona doesn’t give an ish about an expiring contract, right?

    Al Jefferson is really good.

    ^Words of wisdom from me.^

  • rainman10

Moose, I agree. Not a bad trade for Minny however, but it still doesn’t solve the problem at center.

  • ber

If this this is true, I’ll miss the Z-Bo/Gasol bromance.

man wat tha. . . all the progress. . . i juz dont understand. . . so wat wit rumorz. they happen all the time! did clevland ditch deonte. . . did denver ditch j.r.. . .

  • johnny c

are you f**king serious?!?! after all the improvement z-bo brought to that team this year, and they want to ship him out for a guy with a long term expensive contract who still hasnt regained his old form following a knee repair surgery? i dont get the logic in this by memphis, and if it happens i feel so bad for z-bo, being stuck in nba purgatory in minnesota.

  • cp3fan

Randolph just had a good season, why trade him? And if the Wolves got him, why waive a 20 and 10 guy? I don’t understand this.

  • cp3fan

Also, why trade the centerpiece of your team? Al Jefferson is a potential all-star caliber player when healthy. Put him at the five, put Kevin at the four, Wes Johnson at the three if you get him tomorrow night, Ellington at the two and Flynn at the one and you have a nice young team. This doesn’t make any sense.

this trade confuses me on both sides really.

  • Fut,

Sets up the KG return to Minny for ZBo and one of a million PGs. Book it.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Randolph had a great year, but I think is off court troubles over-shadow his production on it.. Guy doesnt seem to learn from his mistakes, I remember in Portland he got busted with weed and was crying into the camera saying how it wont ever happen again.. Knucklehead.

  • Will Lee

randolph is a great playing motherf**ker. Memphis is the clueless team

  • Ronald

And has anyone actually watched Z-Bo play? It’s borderline maddening. He’s extremely skilled but for some reason he likes to spot up for random threes.

  • riggs

@BossTerry: if im not mistaken zach had been fairly quiet last year on the off-court ish, except for that trouble during the end of the season where i think it wasnt even his fault.

  • Martey

Why does everyone treat Zach Randolph like a stepchild. He is an ALLSTAR. Wow. He was the only bright spot in New York along with Jamal Crawford and they blamed him for the ill fated pairing with Eddy Curry. He acted like a professional in Memphis and was a centerpiece. If he acts up, then they gonna blame him

  • the Rudy Gay Pride

man, i love Z-Bo, this would be a tough pill to swallow, but might just have to happen. i think Rudy Gay is going to swing a max contract this summer, then next summer Z-Bo and OJ Mayo are bothing going to be looking at max deals. i think we’d lose Z-Bo anyway. Al Jefferson in return sounds like it might too good of a deal not to do. i’d really miss Z-Bo, and his ever awesome Z-BOunds.

  • the Rudy Gay Pride

and let the record show, i’m pretty sure Z-Bo doesn’t have anything to do with this recent issue. his only fault is keeping intouch with crappy friends.

  • dino

How would Big Al and Marc co exist in Memphis. P.S. Poor poor Z-BO

  • T-Money

People are not giving Zach enough respect. The guy is a baller. He’s a 20-10 lock year in, year out. THE best offensive rebounder in the L (look it up, he’s in front of Dwight and Camby!). Can step outside to hit the j or give you the business down low, pause.

  • johnny c

cosign T-Money. and i do understand why minnesota wants al jefferson gone, skilled yes, but not worth his contract. and memphis would be crazy to take that deal.
