Dan Gilbert’s Fiery Letter To Fans

LeBron let us know how he felt, and now his former employer is doing the same. Here’s part of the letter Dan Gilbert, Cavs owner, just published:

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his “decision” unlike anything ever “witnessed” in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

You simply don’t deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

You can take it to the bank.

And how will he go about doing that?

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

This could also be called, Dan Gilbert goes IN!

  • http://Slamonline.com Rubelube

That’s what I like to hear. This mofo is a coward like Danny boy said.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Also, if you click on the link to the Cavs’ site, kind of a weird font for that letter, right?

  • Alex Esquilin

    He can’t really believe that.

  • K. Hanson

Now we know why Lebron really left. To get away from that crazy and psychotic owner of Cleveland. Can you believe that owner and his venomous words? He is no better than the fan that burned the Lebron jersey.

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

This is f*cking ridiculous. I’m rooting for the Miami Heat just to piss y’all haters off.

  • Omar

I like this!!!!! But his team is still screwed, yeah.

  • boggs

    LBJ: “Rrrrrrriiiiiight…

  • J.C.

I can empathise and I agree that James is a massive twat for the TV spectacle but he did his best in Cleveland and they got consistently worse. I would have gone somewhere else too if I were him. He’s in his prime now and if he doesn’t act soon he’ll run out of time. I suppose Miami is the best place to win a Chip, but what it’ll do for his legacy is another issue entirely…

  • MikeC.

Did Gilbert buy a juvenation machine for Jamison? Who else is going to score for them?

  • reese

lol wow mad is an understatement…should have made the moves to keep ur beloved “king” smh this letter wouldn’t have been written if he chose to stay cleveland stop being so mad and get over it…the organization has nobody to be mad at but themselves…true words from a sore loser

  • http://slamonline.com/ Tzvi Twersky

Lang LOVES this letter (as do I).

  • Kyle

They be workin fast to remove LeBron from their page….

  • Teddy

Good for Gilbert an owner who tells the truth and stops all the BS. Gilbert is the new “King” and a good one at that LeBron James is the new Court Jester to Dwayne Wade.

  • Sam

Hahaha. Win a championship before the best team since Jordan’s Bulls?

The Heat have a dream team on their hands. They’re going to win next year, guaranteed.

Gilbert made himself look like a complete ass with this letter.

  • http://slamonline.com Lang Whitaker

Yeah, I do love it. Dude just went IN!

  • MikeC.

I’m a heeeeeeeeyooooooooge Knicks fan, and I can honestly say that going to the Bulls was his best shot at winning and not looking like a prick. As a competitor, wouldn’t it be better to beat Bosh and Wade instead of saying “those guys are going to kick my vagina, so I should go play with them.” If this is how Lebron is wired, I’d rather wait for next year’s crew.

  • lou

Hahaha Dan’s right! And as a laker fan I’m glad lebron did that, the king who can’t lead!! Kobe is better big time, lebron destroyed his name

  • cru_thik305

just remember there is a difference between “winning” a championship, and “earning” a championship.

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

I can’t wait to see LeBron and the Heat beat the living tar out of the Cavs this coming season.

  • C.B

I dont get y Cleavland gota be so bitter. I mean come on, I kno it was wrong of him not to speak to the owner, but this is just to much. From the owner? wow…

  • http://www.pdmconcrete.com Pat Maloy

Dan Gilbert is the BEST OWNER IN SPORTS. For the self centered, self proclaimed KING, to snub not only his hometown, the ownership that bent over backwards to give him the talent around him to win in Cleveland, deserves more than to find out when the whole nation did. I HAVE 100% CONFIDENCE THAT DAN GILBERT WIN BE PART OF A CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE EGO CASE WILL. THERE ISNT ENOUGH ROOM IN THAT FILTHY CITY FOR THE EGOS TO ALL FIT, THAT INCLUDED PAT RILEY!! People in Cleveland shouls appreciate and need to realize how lucky we are to have DAN GILBERT!!! HE IS WAY BIGGER THAN THE EGO CASE LEBRON JAMES!! LeBron, keep routing for the Yankees and Cowboys, they will give you a championship to cheer, long before you and your ego come close. THANKS DAN AND BYE LEBRON, DONT LET THE DOOR HIT YOU IN THE ASS!!!

  • lou

Lebron could’ve brought grait basketball by winning with Chicago or knicks, now all he can say is wade is the man!

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Lack of class at its finest. Gilbert should have slept on this first – he’d probably have change a few of the adjectives and adverbs then.

  • MikeC.

“Guarantee a championship” is a little too far. Gotta love Gilbert showing some teeth though. Time to re-up from the feet up. Now we’ll see what kind of owner he is. It’s easy to throw money around when your team has the most marketable star in the league. If he’s willing to keep spending now that his most marketable player is Antawn Jamison, we’ll know.

Wait a minute. What is this slavery? Does he own Lebron? He acting like yo you can’t leave here. Man these dudes exploit these players from as early as 11yrs old. They can’t even wear their jerseys in commercials. Rarely one of them gets put in a position of power and he’s called a coward by a dude who sounds like a woman scorned. Talk about a poison pen. Bottom line the dude can go wherever he wants. They created the publicity, the monster, the king, the witnesses and now they want to put quotation marks like it’s all fake. IT IS FAKE because YOU manufactured it. Spoiled silver spoon ass brat can’t have his young buck anymore. What is this THE TOY starring Richard Pryor? As soon as Bron would have hurt his knee or get old he would have straight up traded or waived him like the Knicks did loyal Patrick Ewing or so many others. Where would have been the love of the city then? Are owners and gms called cowards when they trade or waive players? Cut us a freaking break. Lebron get yours. You only get one life. Screw these corporate clows

  • http://lakers.com stu

@lang i know, right.. you can’t take anything seriously in Comic Sans!!

that said, this letter is nuts. awesome.

  • Djc

Is Dan Gilbert serious? He really just acted like and teenage child what he said was a very rash statement. He acted clearly off of emotion. He was just all over Lebron a couple of days ago. We can sit hear and say oh he did so much to keep Lebron in Cleveland. Mo Williams is non existent in the playoffs and Jamison can’t dribble with his left hand. Come on Dan that won’t win you a championship, maybe in the WNBA

  • Fat Lever

Can’t say Gilbert doesn’t care about the team and it’s fans, ever. As an owner, he should have acted more professionally and I think he should have waited a little bit to hit the send button. As a fan, I totally respect his fire and passion for his team.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

    Loved every word.

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

    Give MR. MARTIN a reward.
Lebron and Wade will f’ing CONQUER the league for the next three years, and win as many championships as… WELL Kobe and Shaq, you know, the guys that get EQUAL CREDIT for their dominance in the early 2000s.
I’m gonna by a Heat jersey now.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I love Gilbert calling him out. I would too if I was the owner. I might be the only one, but I still believed the Cavs with Lebron could beat the Wade and Bosh tandem in Miami. Bulls was the better team to go too. Knicks was a good team to go to. Lebron still would have been the man and his legacy grows. Now his legacy takes a hit and becomes hated by many many folks. Especially old NBA players, who have stated this was a punk move. Lebron can win two titles or three, but his brand and him has taken a hit. Now Lebron will need security in Ohio for at least one year. BOOK IT!!

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

it’s just like my mom says. if you feel like writing an angry letter, write it. then, put it in your desk drawer. the next day, reread the letter, and chances are, you’ll decide not to send it. this letter is a disgrace. is this what the NBA’s all about now? hour long shows to announce FA decisions and letters from owners to fans trashing a player? damn.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Gotta cosign with Mr. Martin on this. It’s a f*cking business; be a businessman. Also, nice way to show how classy you are to future free agent signees. If I was a player, I wouldn’t want to play for a creep like this.

  • neaorin

Admire Gilbert’s passion, but there was no need for this. Al least it looks like we’ll find the real story about LeBron quitting during the Celtics series.

  • olddirtyphil

I want to play pg for the cavs and help them win i feel so bad and i wasnt a cavs fan but feel i am now thats not right man i dont mean leaving thats his choice as a person but doing it on tv is wrong man but dang it im a raw player ive never been coached but i can dribble and defend i want to help the cavs win they still have money this means to spend they can figure out some thing “anythings possible”

  • Jose

This is like. I can’t believe he came out like that(Gilbert) i’d be p*ssed too tho

  • olddirtyphil

    and i can pass

2010, political correctness rules public statements but Dan Gilbert just threw the rulebook out the window. Pure disappointment and rage: I LOVE IT.

  • The Philosopher

Another reason why LeBron is King.

  • jay-g

YESSSSSSSS the NBA has Venom again. The old big 3 (Celtics) vs. the new and improved? big 3 (Heat), Boozer in the Chi, the Magic, Hawks and the sleeper Bucks (love their moves). Can’t wait for November

  • T-Money

You do realize that no big time free agents will sign with the Cavs after this, right? Name me a prime time guy that will go play for this unstable owner. Just one. As much as everybody hates LeBron now, NBA superstars actually LIKE each other. Mo Williams congratulated Bron even though he was disappointed.

  • The Philosopher

Co-sign T-Money about Dan Gilbert… One day he’s going to have to sell that team indirectly based on this “letter”. Theoretically, he just sunk his own ship. He is a clown.

  • The Philosopher

    *In my opinion.

  • Reflex

D Gizzle went on hard on this! FIRE!!

  • neaorin

T-Money: lol… what big time free agents? Nobody wants to come to Cleveland dude, ask Chris Bosh, Trevor Ariza, Ron Artest, Michael Redd, Ray Allen… the list is ten miles long. The Cavs have no other hope for a title unless they rebuild through the draft, Oklahoma City style, regardless of who the owner is.

  • jefferson davis

Dan needs to put himself in lebrons shoes, if da cavs are not giving him what every basketball player wants to archieve then he has to find somewhere elsem
I have been wishing lebron gets dat ring and I think he is gonna do it. Good luck to The King and make us all proud, a lot of people will be changing their numbers this season.
    Championship ring baby

  • Klemperer

All business. Pippen found his Jordan in Mia.

  • T-Money

The more Gilbert talks and the less LBJ will feel guilty about jumping ship.

  • http://All33sports.blogspot.com Aznballa3

So the guy treats lebron like a king, a franchise player who gave the cavs a name on the map, and then he runs him over with a bus!??! Watheheck. Real owners shud want watever is best for his players, not watever will win him a ring.

  • http://slamonline.com Fut,

Mo Williams quietly did a dance of joy as the keys to a dying franchise and all the bad shots he could ever want fell into his hands. Hell, he doesn’t even have to worry about choking in the playoffs now.

  • neaorin

LBJ didn’t feel any guilt about jumping ship. A guy who feels guilt doesn’t schedule a one hour special to announce he’s leaving, and will at least give his employer a courtesy call beforehand.

  • philonius

Dan Gilbert and all Cleveland fans will be hoping for a little Patrick Ewing theory me thinks. It happened to my fav team when Grant Hill left town and we got Ben Wallace and the other puzzle pieces to bring a title back to the Pistons.

Cavs fans, you just need to continue to “Believe”.

  • knowsense

If gilbert but half the effort he put into this venomous thesis into getting lebron some help, he wouldnt have had this problem in the first place.

  • JOE!

Why is it if a player leaves a team on his own he treated as disloyal and greedy? Some team owners act like they really “own” the players.

  • Jason

    Lebron James is Dwades b**ch

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com Hursty

    Fu*k all y’all haters, seriously.
    Co-sign Jukai (again).
If you were offered a better job, with more rewards than your current one, you’d take it wouldn’t you?
    Exactly. So, STFU please.

  • BK Chris

It’s one thing to leave your home town, But to do it on national fucking television! Im not a hater but certain things are clear now.1) Lebron will never be a billionaire! 2) Regardless of what he does and how many rings he wins he will never be anywhere near th icon Jordan/Kobe are. 3) Whenever Lebrons name is brought up in greatest player discussions The question is How many rings did he win on his own?

  • will

it seems lebron can’t do anything right, if he went to the team offering the most money he’d be looked at as only being in it for the money, and now that he’s taken $30 mil less to go to a potential dynasty, he’s considered cowardly and to be taking the easy way out? Next seasons the perfect chance to shut everyone up with a chip.
Also, the 2 aussies patty mills and nathan jawai to fill the PG and C!!:)

  • Joey E.

^Will, stop. No one would have killed LeBron for staying in cleveland and taking more money.

  • will

if lebron got traded for chris paul then it would be a better fit for both teams, with CP accompanying wade’s game better than lebron would, and lebron gets to team up with okafor, west, and collison. Collison would play sick with lebron. Plus, Lebron could still be the no. 1 man and be the scorer he is, however wouldn’t be a garuanteed fix that lebron is looking for and creates huge competition, although, it would make a great finals series.

  • will

@Joey E- maybe not if there wasn’t another team willing to sign him who were a garaunteed winner and better than the cavs, but there was. im sure some people would have made an effort to hate by saying that (if he did choose cavs) that he saw extra money as being more important than a garaunteed chip

  • Big E

LMAO. I wonder what Byron Scott is thinking about all of this. LMAO.

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

I guess what a lot of Cleveland fans are saying (hey have we talked about them yet?), is yeah, they COULD have understood Lebron’s decision to move to Miami, but the what hurts most is the way Lebron announced the move. On national TV? That was humiliating man. It’s disrespectful and callous. At least, y’know have the decency to address the community first before you go on ESPN and drop the bomb there.

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

Big E: Byron HAS said he wants to coach the Cavs with or without James.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

How pathetic on Dan Gilberts part. What a tool.

  • mb

how can you talk so disrespectfully about your former best player? bron has always given all he could for a franchise that he has been a member of for a longer time than that psycho actually owns it.

dan respect lebron’s decision. take it as a man. thats how it works. you ve been using lebron as your personal cash cow for the last five years.

you don’t deserve such a classy elite player on your team (not talking about the cleveland fans here, i feel sorry for you).

accusing him of quitting is just pointless. if it hadn t been for lebron the cavs would still be at the gutter of todays nba world just like they were before he joined your team.

  • Jacob (from Australia)

Oh, so how does Mike Brown feel about all this? Maybe ‘betrayed’? or angry about the ‘cowardly’ way he was fired. How about the fact that LeBron put most of those divsion and conference championships in the rafters and how Brown was kicked out despite having the best regular season team two years in a row. Screw the egotistical bastard. Bron, go do your thing.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Hilarious, and sad. Both this letter and the 1 Hour “Special.” Good luck to both parties, and let the flame war begin!

  • http://slamonline.com walt williams

The bottom line is Lebron was in Cleveland for 7 years. 7!! Thats is plenty of time to build a team. Lebron did the right thing. He was questioned at the end of this season and is still being questioned about his desire to win. You cannot ask of his thirst for a ring now, haters. He is sacrificing money, reputation and pride to freaking win right now. I am surprised and impressed at the same time. Didn’t think he could shrink himself enough to do this..

  • Bassbesteck

    the letter made my day…

I guarantee that the cavs will not even reach the playoffs this year, with the knicks getting better, the bulls becoming stronger, the magic, bobcats, of course the heat, celtics, the bucks as pretty locked contenders and one last spot everybody else will fight for.

Btw: I’ll sign as point guard with the heat for 5k a month. All I’d do is inbound the ball and foul out in the third, still be the best fit for the team, as I won’t take attention of the big 3^^

  • Flud

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ahhaa haha ha ha ha…. (breath in) HAAAA ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Seriously Dan. Its typed in comic sans. Which is mega ultra lame without the comic bit. UN-BE-LIEVABLE

  • Dre Baller

  • rashado

winning a chip won’t shut anyone up. if he doesn’t win one he’s a complete loser, that’s how good his new team will be…does that make him a role model? to go for the easiest opportunity to win? what about competition and challenging oneself?

  • ciroqobama

Gilbert is a douche- Cleveland sucks who wouldnt leave that city.

  • http://sdfjklfl.com Jukai

That’s what people were saying about Kobe and his stacked team. Kobe won one and now everyone’s all over his jock. Trust me, if Wade and Lebron win four in a row, this will all be forgotten.
Of course, if Lebron doesn’t win anything, his fault or not, he’ll be sub-Bernard King in the annals of history. So, this is quite the risky move.

  • http://choked.org Mo Williamson and Zachary Ilgauskus

    F. Lebron!!!

  • Blackphantom

I’m a laker fan, and yes this is a very cowardly move by Lebron. Think about it, Jordan didn’t have anyone with him in his younger days(before Phil Jackson & Scottie Pippen), but he pushed through the early playoff putouts and eventually lead his team to glory(with help of course)but that’s why he’s really the greatest of all time(other than his incomparable rap sheet of accomplishments). Kobe used to be a complementary player, but when his time came, he stepped up, Lebron just decided he’d rather be a complementary player for the rest of his career.Kobe was public enemy #1 after Shaq left. He pulled through years of playing with nothing, persevered and with help(like Jordan) he eventually led his team back to championship glory. Lebron obviously can’t lead a team to glory, why do you think he quit on CLE? Why do you think he’s going to a team with two other of the NBA elite?

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

Does this guy think hes Kanye West? FOH w the capslock.

  • Bambino29

I would like everyone to remember that this is a TEAM game. If you have the opportunity to complete what you feel is the best TEAM, quite simply, you do it, all egos aside. This is why a lot of people can not and do not have nice things. Hubris is at b!tch, these players have given us the opportunity to see what previously was only thought possible through fantasy draft in a video game. Let’s enjoy these superstars attempting to make the TEAM concept work, win or lose.

  • nastierthanu

Applaud Mr.Martin any reference at all to wonder wheel is CLASSIC

  • WangChung

The Cavs will most certainly win a championship in the near future. They just have to start using the triangle offense for their superstars (guys called Mo, Andy, Antawn).

Man, I can’t wait Gilbert’s press comments when the Heat do win a ring.

  • john

Lebron is now a coward for making a CAREER move, loyalty is important, but he spent 7 years as a cavalier and didnt get his ring, so he had no reason to stay. Dan Gilbert is just unhappy that Lebron has a legitimate chance at future chaampionships

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

2025: 23 hanging in cavs arena

  • vtrobot

win one before lebron does? really? are you going to trade your team for the entire lakers roster? that’s pretty delusional dude. he must have been about 7 bourbons into it when he penned that one. i agree that the TV show was very twatty. as i was watching a part of it, it made me dislike the entire NBA. dan gilbert sounds like a sore *sshole. why the f*ck was lebron going to stay in CLE? BECAUSE HE’S FROM THAT AREA? are you kidding me? that’s the best reason? i forgot that all NBAers always play where they grew up. lebron owes more to CLE than he does to himself? why? you had him for 7 YEARS and didn’t do much to convince him to stick around. congrats on making CLE about his 5th best option in this FA period. how would his next year in CLE have ended? getting bounced by MIA, ORL, BOS, CHI in the playoffs? that would have been nice for him. MIA was the p*ssy move, though. “i made the decision this morning.” really? you sure about that? what was it that swayed your decision? the fact that those cabanas for the party had been rented a couple days beforehand? LBJ, honesty will serve you best in this situation and keep the level of hate as low as it can be. besides the greater MIA area, and “cleveland (i.e. lebron) fanboys, EVERYONE will want to see this team lose. in how many cities does LBJ get booed now? and for how long?

  • BigAndre81

Now he win rings with d wades team
    nice trade pride for titles

  • shone jones

Arthur Blank didn’t even react like this when Vick lied to him and blew up the whole organization. Just goes to show you some owners have class and maturity and others don’t.

What big time free agent is ever wanna gonna sign for a guy like this? You can’t fire Mike Brown and Danny Ferry after back to back 60 win seasons and then cry about loyalty.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

This is the chance Delonte West has been waiting for…

  • Bryan S

Some of you guys are saying Lebron can’t lead…um look at his old supporting cast vs Kobe’s supporting cast. I think it s a bit one sided

  • somedude

Lebron James may be the most coddled athlete in history; from the stories you see it’s hard to imagine a team bending over backwards so hard to accommodate a player. Firing Mike Brown and Danny Ferry was probably an attempt to appease Lebron. I hope every player in the NBA sat at home through that ridiculous special and thought “F*ck that guy.”

  • Bryan S

O and you say Kobe perservered through years and lead a team to a championship…Im pretty sure he barely made the playoffs once shaq left and he was asking for a trade after a couple of years. Its a team game the Lakers didnt become contenders again unitl they stacked their roster with the Pao Gasol trade. And look at LBJs supporting cast it was horrible how was he ever supposed to win when no one but him showed up for a playoff game…JUST SAYING

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

TBH Gilbert sounds real butt hurt here..

  • Josh

I can’t think of another basketball player that brought as much to his home town (as a young kid) than Lebron did. He held press conferences and brought the media there every chance he got. He never quit on his team while playing and took them further than they would have ever gone without him. Can’t someone just be grateful they had the opportunity to ‘witness’ it for the last 7 years.

  • Dave

C’mon, be serious. Ferry quit (and I’d bet he saw LeBron was leaving and left the sinking ship) and Mike Brown proved how much he sucked as a coach two years in a row.

I do think Mr Gilbert is calling out LeBron on being pandered to and covered-up for because he spent the last five years doing it and got stung in the end.

Now D-Wade has his Dr J on the wing, ride his coattails to the fo’, fo’, fo’.

  • kudos

Hilaroius letter. Funny even more when lebron lover’s are like, ” That’s what you do after 7 years together?” Well, is that what you do to your hometown, lebron?? Akron is pretty much Cleveland, so he is one dumb dude. Miami still aren’t better than celtics or magic, at least not yet.

  • adesa908

@Blackphantom dumbst analysis of all time. Ask Kobe how Shaq’s and Gasol’s a$$ tastes. All Kobe did was whine and ballhog his entire career. Your probably a bangwagon Laker and Kobe Bryant jock strap rider just like everyone else, your scared now that Lebron has a real shot win a chip and make the heat into a dynasty. That’s why you say all the crap about Lebron needing dwade or saying oh Jordan never did this blah blah….All the haters and Dan Gil can stick it where the sun don’t shine

  • WangChung

To all the haters out there calling LBJ ‘disloyal’, a ‘punk’, and whatnot: according to media reports, ‘Bron was doing his damnedest to recruit free agents to join him in CLE. His ‘decision’ is just as much influenced by their decisions. Players just don’t want to ball in CLE. Hate that; don’t hate the man.

  • Pingback: SLAM ONLINE | » Video: LeBron James’ Cavs Jersey Burned

  • T-Money

The thing that bugs me is that Gilbert is acting like he gave Bron a chance to shine. The man spent seven years there and doubled the value of your franchise. Teams were making presentation about how they could see him play in their sstem and who they would surround him with and you showed him cartoons and people on the street saying that they loved him. No roster upgrade. Listen to the Larry King interview, he said all along that he would make a basketball decision to put himself in a position to win not just now but for years to come. He made that basketball decision. Not fame. Not money. Basketball.

  • http://dtriumbari@yahoo.com dtt

I am so happy for LeBron. Com on cleveland or SOUTH BEACH. danny G go fu*k yourself. You had him for seven years making a ton of money averaging 20,000 people per game and what did you give to the city of Cleveland?? STUCAUTS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://dtriumbari@yahoo.com dtt

    danny boy go f*ck yourself.

  • http://dtriumbari@yahoo.com dtt

Hey Danny boy again go f*ck yourself

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Dan Gilbert is a pompous hypocrite. I haven’t read any other comments, so excuse me if I’m repeating what others have said.
For the past few years, Gilbert has profited from Lebron, and built his team and business around Lebron, and for him to attack Lebron personally after he leaves said team is just lame and disgusting. His personal attacks were ridiculous, he’s childish taunts even more so.
I wonder how the media and fans would react if a player took the time to write something like this after being traded, or cut. Would we find that acceptable?
I don’t agree with Lebron’s decision to go the Heat, or to have a national press conference. However, I don’t think he owed Cleveland anymore than he gave them, and I don’t his decision to leave was a betrayal of any sort.
Bottom line, when owners and GMs make decisions they fall back on “It’s a business.”
Dan Gilbert would do well to remember that mantra right now.

  • Hussman25

Gilbert sound’s like a jilted GF…. Like Killa Cam said in Paid in Full… “PULL UR SKIRT DOWN B!” MAN UP DAN! U still have a franchise to run… W/ this letter you think any NBA FA would come to play for someone like you?? I wonder if he would let the cat out of the bag abt Bron’s mom and Desparado West now Bron’S NO LONGER A COMPANY EMPLOYEE??

  • http://www.borntocompete.com Money$hot

Gilbert is the worst, all of a sudden when a players decides to make a move to a more competitive team its a cowardly betrayal, and if the team makes a decision to trade a player to another team then it’s business? Are you kidding me, he could not do the job of getting good players around Lebron, if he would have done that I believe he would have stayed. If he would have stayed he would have got screwed the best years of NBA career, Lebron will have still been getting highlights, personal accolades, but no ring with the Clevland organization. Lebron would have just been another KG in Minnesota, or Iverson in Philly, balling his a$$ off just for regular season wins, stats, and sportcenter highlights, but never a real chance to compete for a NBA chip. Trust me Gilbert has profited off of Lebron very well the last 7 yrs. But, face it the Cleveland organization couldn’t pull of a trade like how the Lakers got Gasol, or how Boston got Garnett and Allern, and Lebron wasnt going to wait until he was old and then go to another team.

  • Kid Dynamite

Riiiight Gilbert, keep whining and writing those letters ripping former employees, I bet EVERYONE wants to play for the Cavs now. While you’re at it sweep the ashes from Lebrons jersey off your office floor cause from this letter I know you must have burnt his jersey too, Go Heat!!!

  • Lee

“… the staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.” Nor never? So I guess that means he WILL betray them?
Not only is Gilbert an as*hole, he can’t write for sh*t.

  • Nashty

Dan is just mad Lebron won’t be making his ass richer. Lebron has done everything he can for Akron.

  • unrel

all he has to do is keep Delonte West.. and he just has to average 1 superstar’s mother for every playoff series.. in order to, mentally, take them out the game.. done deal.. good luck, clevland..

  • RV

made the letter too personal…but lebron DID quit and he did take this free agency thing too far. cleveland didnt deserve more time from lebron, but they did deserve some more courtesy/respect during this process.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    I loved the letter.
It went a little far, a little crazy — but I still loved it.
I’m rooting for LA now. Sign a couple pieces and take down this summit circus team in Miami.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Rhodeeski

To anyone saying they’re gonna root for the heat now, “because of the haters” really? What a pathetic excuse to jump on the Bandwaggon. (wich millions will do) Unless ur a Cavs fan, how can u hate LeBron? The Cavs made 0 big moves on the roster to keep him, didn’t even get rid of Delonte. (maf*ckin’ West) But I feel like Cavs fans have every right to hate this guy right now ( for the way) he chose to leave. I’ve always felt like Despite all the hype, LeBron always seemed to live up to it. But just when u thought there was already enough hype surrounding this guy, he had to elevate it to historical levels. Now with this move, I don’t think he’ll ever live up to the hype, simply for the fact that this is a HUGE not big 3 and they will b expected to win If not dominate. And please don’t cal me a “hater” for having an opinion, because I will be watching the Heat just like you will, but no more “king” hype and I swear I’ll barf next time I see another “wittness” ad. MJB needs to do a remix on “no more drama” < – insert hype, and LeBron needs to do something about that chosen one tat.

Pat Maloy this is a business grown up, Dan Gilbert didn’t bend over backwards to bring him talent. He got MO Williams who was streaky at best. He got shaq who was too busy getting sued for stalking, he got jamison who just kinda looked lost.

Mr. Martin Thank you for your comments.

I think Dan Gilbert had every right to express his feelings I appreciate him using comic sands it made me laugh the entire time I read the letter.Dan is entitled to feel how he feels, we are just not required to agree. If the cavs win a championship before Lebron I will cover my back in the cavs logo. You can take it to the bank.

  • Illydiva

I want to read the rest of the comments, but I completely co-sign with MR. MARTIN Posted: Jul.9 at 12:16 am. Poor Gilbert got his heart broken. I should weep for him? GTFOH! Where were all these accusations when he was trying to woo Lebron to stay?? Usually, an owner doesn’t call up a player to tell him he’s being traded until AFTER the deal is done. LeBron got Cleveland before he got got. (Personally, I was hoping he’d stay for sentimental reasons; but I’m a fan. I can lead with my heart.) An owner’s job is to close the deal. Don’t get b**chy when you can’t make that happen.

  • Bigg Regg

we all know who will win one 1st. Not Cleveland

  • Illydiva

I can’t believe my comment (which was fabulous) didn’t get posted. Basically, I co-sign with Mr Martin way up there ^^ and Allenp. Whether Lebron wins a championship or not, this letter was a bitch move. And like someone else said, if this had been a player doing something so tacky and unprofessional, they’d be tarred and feathered. So the 1-hr dog & pony show was overkill last night. The media created this circus, and those who now hate Lebron for being a part of it are the same ones reading every blog and listening to every soundbite. Whatever. I had hoped he’d stay in Cleveland, but I wish him the best. Dan Gilbert better start a budget like regular folks have to do when the think their cash cow will last forever and then doesn’t.

  • Pusha T

    “You like that, Bron Bron?”

  • The Man

Who the f*ck wouldn’t want to leave Cleveland? The city is miserable and their teams suck. Besides, Dan Gilbert is a douchebag. You don’t think if someone came to Gilbert and offered him two superstars and a butt load of money for Lebron, that he wouldn’t take it? Of course he would. He’d get rid of his hometown son if it was in his better interest. Gilbert is a douchebag businessman that would betray Lebron given the opportunity. Plus he gave $2000 to George W. Bush’s campaign in 2004. Go f*ck yourself Gilbert. Good for Lebron.

I’m fine with LeBron making his own decisions in life. Gilbert went overboard when he stated that the Cavs will cash in a title before LeBron. Dan Gilbert hasn’t released the worst of LeBron’s actions in Cleveland, and it’ll be interesting to see if the King’s bad doings while with the Cavs are mentioned later.

  • http://www.hufsf.com Waylonakolipse

The Cavs just screw’d themselves…What big name free agent is gonna want to play for a team that’ll bash it’s former players like that? Show some class Mr. Gilbert. Like yo ass never stepped on someones dreams to do what you thought was better for yourself or your team. Not even Kobe guarantee’s titles before the season starts. Reality check your team is wack that’s why he left.

First of all, Mr. Gilbert, LeBron James gave it all he had every single game he played for your team for 7 years. He was tired of losing because the only so-called help you got him were washed-up stars and the rest were basically misfits who wern’t worthy to play with a guy as good as him. And, may I ask, how do you think you are going to win a title before possibly the best team ever assembled does? Just wondering. Mr. Gilbert has officially stuck his foot in his mouth, and he’s gonna look like a total idiot soon, because even if the Heat don’t win it next year, they will get at least a couple in my opinion. Can any of us honestly say that we would turn down an opportunity to play with 2 olympic gold medal winners, in their primes, making nearly max money, if not max, and to top it off, you are in South Beach, A.K.A. party central? I think not. Gilbert now becomes the dumbest owner in sports. Good luck Bron.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I would have chosen to go the Chi, to be honest.
Then, I get two possible all-stars, multiple decent role players, and the chance to create a team in my image. Plus, I get to match up against my two archrivals instead of being on their team.
    Sounds great to me.
Honestly, Bron took the tougher road off the floor, even if it is the easier road on the floor in many ways.
No matter what, he’ll deal with this for the rest of his career. Wade gets all the benefits of being the “man” and none of hte bad stuff, like incredible hype and expecatations.

  • http://www.newyorkshockexchange.com Old School Baller

Penny Hardaway, Kobe, Dwyane Wade … Shaq made all of them champions. People were trying to say Penny was the main guy in Orlando too. Shaq was so dominant that to say the obvious was too easy. The Lakers were given a “gift” with Gasol from Memphis and that’s why the Lakers are winning. That never would have happened back in the day. It was league policy not to trade top players to LA or Boston out of fear they would be unbeatable.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Penny never won anything.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

You make great points Allenp. Wade will be the man, because he has 1 more ring than James and Bosh. I actually thought he would be in New York, I figured Amare would draw LeBron in. His legacy will take a hit, no doubt, because people will always say he couldn’t do it on his own, true in a way, but nobody else can either. Bron will be one of the most hated players in the league for a long time, while he aquires rings and is all smiles, I doubt he will worry about what anybody has to say about it, since he will have some rings before its over with.

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

Will Wade really be the man? Uh….

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Jukai, come over to Byran’s post, The Aftermath. I’m debating that we don’t know who will be the man, but since everybody assumes it’s Wade, while also assuming Lebron has to be the one to produce, then Lebron gets no benefits and all the pressure.

  • C-mac

First of all how is Dan gonna do that? And secondly if he had chosen Cleveland how much do you reckon Dan woulda been talking about this ‘narcissistic self promotional buildup’?

  • Tridad

C’mon Mr. Gilbert! One can understand the hurt and disappointment of having your most prized player leave the fold, but you can do better than those caustic remarks about LeBron. There are many, including myself that believe Mr. James and his business associates went over the top in this whole process. For you, all you needed to do was to thank him for his service, wish him well in his future endeavors, and then move on to doing your job of building a winning brand. Your outburst is uncalled for, period. I will be surprised if the NBA does not censure you on it. It’s totally unbecoming of an owner of an NBA franchise. Now I’m starting to think that LeBron made the best “DECISION” to leave your team. Behave like the adult that you are; get your emotions in check.
