Jermaine O’Neal, Celtics Agree on Contract

JO should be a key piece for the Cs with Kendrick Perkins possibly out for half the ’10-11 season: “Jermaine O’Neal has agreed to sign with the Boston Celtics, a league source tells Y! Sports.”

Good pick up for the Celtics, as long as JO stays healthy that is…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Well…in theory it seems like a good move to fill in for Perk until he’s healthy..HOWEVA….as evidenced as his last couple of seasons in Miami, dude doesn’t like to move the rock and will have a sh*t fit if he is moved out of the starting lineup once Perk is back. This is fact. He can still block shots, and contribute a bit offensivley, but this will end poorly for the Celts around March or so.

  • Erika Badu

aaaand the most annoying team in the L just got more annoyinger!

  • WangChung

@Eboy: NO one has sh*t fits when KG is around. Not even Marbury.

  • slawson

Injuries have plagued Baby Shaq ever since the tail end of his time with Indiana, but 13 and 6 last season in 70 games this past season was only a shade off of his career averages of 14 and 7.

I’ll take those numbers, which are better than Perks (offensively, defense they are about even in rebounds). It’s a good fit for the C’s who need him to have that kind of a season in 2011. Perk should be able to contribute after he comes back in Feb, that means. Set picks, block shots, and occasionally rebound and/or dunk.

WangChung, I’d like to point you to Exhibit A in the reason JO wouldn’t give a sh*t about what KG would have to say to him: The Palace Brawl….JO knows his way around hand throwing and I think KG’s stringbeanesque a*s would get broke down until the seeds spilled out if he tried that in your face act with him. Just my opinion though. Anthony Peeler could probably back me up on this.

  • Crusher

Not sure about this one. The Celts need some big bodies, but I don’t have a lot of faith left in Jermaine’s. I hope it turns out well, but I have my doubts.

wow, did not see this coming. i like it, though. just hope he stays healthy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com riggs

but did they also sign his knees?

  • http://www.slamonline.com doyouwantmore

Didn’t you hear? Jermaine says he’s going to become an all-star again in 2009. Just kiddin’. I like Jermaine a lot and I think this is a very logical pick up for Boston.

  • kev

makes sense, good move…… there just aren’t a lot of good available big men for the price.

  • vtrobot

i thought the big baby was “baby shaq.” does shaq have two offspring in the L? JO was good about 6 years ago, he has no right to throw any sort of fits when he starts coming off the bench. @ eboy: i would think KG is a little tougher than the tiny fan who JO took out at the palace. C’s will still do damage next year.

  • WangChung

@Eboy: It’s not a matter of fisticuffs. It’s the attitude that KG expects from his teammates. Although he has been plagued with injuries in years past, JO has always underachieved. If the C’s can get a Pacer-like performance from JO for 15 mins. a night, that’s good stuff.

Good news for JO, another “senior citizen”, but still.

  • AL

can we sign charles oakley next?

  • http://www.iiight.com @iiightMrJump

fellas I agree if doc and rondo can get a pacers like performance it will help the void for big man with the absence of perk for a several games. if lebron ends up in miami is the new big 3?

  • roman

Add to the over the hill crew-

  • WangChung

@MrJump: Definitely. And I think this trend of crazy roster overhauls in a short period of time in pursuit of a championship (a la Celtics) is here to stay. Fortune favors the bold.

  • chingy

Good pickup. He would have helped in Game 7

  • The Philosopher

Great pickup by Boston. I think O’Neal will respect Doc, if anything. Nate Robinson is an example of Doc’s influence.
Danny Ainge is one of the best executives in The League.

  • http://www.clownpenis.com Tarzan Cooper

Good move, vastly improves their defensee

  • Javy

Celtic’s amaze once again. They like damaged, past-their-prime players or waht!!!
Hopefully they can beat the new dinasty in Miami.
This assuming that all the C’s line up will be healthy.
I bet these contracts come with health insurance and a 24/7 doctor that knows how to check for cholesterol levels.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

The average age on the celtics is now 68….

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

    Pacers like performance?! AAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

  • http://RickyRude@hotmail.com RickyRude

This is a nice pick-up for Celtics. Jermaine’s inconsistency is my only worry, but he will be playing on a squad where there are plenty of scorers, so all they need is his defensive presence for blocks and rebounds. I think this is a nice addition. I would give Boston one more serious year of being a threat to any team in NBA.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

This is a good pickup considering who’s out there for big men. I like that he can play defense and DOESN’T roam the arc *cough* Sheed *cough* No idea what his personality is like around vets, but I hope it works out. If he acts up when Perk gets reinserted into the starting five, that could get interesting…

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

    lol @wayno

  • Severus

There gonna beat the heat and prince james

  • c_cantrell

nice pick up by the celtics

  • dmoore

this dude is gonna be in his 16th season and he’s only 31, turns 32 in october, that’s crazy, but anyways, he’s well past his prime but will be alot more effective than rasheed wallace was

  • http://yahoo Ddub

Just another old piece to replace for the celtics, one of those old parts will break down and then a chain reaction, just like an old ass car!
It would be wise to start putting younger players in place around Rondo?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

dmoore, if he’s turning 32 and he’s playing in his 16th season, then wouldnt that mean he was drafted at 16? but i agree, good pick up but they need some young pieces.

  • http://claydefayette@yahoo.com Clay

Jermaine O’Neal has to be up there on the dead celebrity money earnings list with this contract to his corpse. Have the Celtics seen the man play lately?

  • http://celticknightk3@aol.com Celtic Knight

@Clay “We heard the same old story that the Celtics are too old to win in 08′ and definately way way too old to beat the Lakers in 69′ Finals… Your claims are getting way way way too old and boring…”

  • riggs

who the hell took the lakers to 7 games a few weeks ago and a good chance to win the chip? yeah shut the hell up..

  • Mookie Blaylock

I see this as a good pickup, can shoot the mid-range jumper decently and just has a generally better offensive game. They sure like making Doc Rivers’ job harder though. How many more egos will he have to keep in check? Not that any of this matters after the Miami BS.

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

He was drafted 17, and played at 18. He’s entering his 15 season.
