Knicks, Amar’e Stoudemire Near Deal

He’s not LeBron, but he is a big name. New York fans should be happy (right?). Yahoo! has us covered: “After several hours of talks on Monday, Amar’e Stoudemire and the New York Knicks are on the brink of completing a five-year contract worth nearly $100 million, a source close to process told Y! Sports. The Knicks and agent Happy Walters have worked out the contractual language, a source said, and Stoudemire has a 4 p.m. meeting with Knicks owner Jim Dolan. The Knicks are expected to make a more formal presentation to the All-Star forward at the meeting. Stoudemire became the Knicks primary power forward target on Friday, but the team is still trying to recruit LeBron James to join him on the Knicks.”

I’d never thought I’d see a D’Antoni/Stoudemire reunion. Good luck NY fans

  • rashado

anyone thinks that this means for sure david lee is gone? i personally think they’d play well together, if they had a more traditional center to come off the bench…?

  • The Philosopher

Things in New York are FINALLY starting to look up.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

@Rashado yea definately I dont even think the knicks really cared for him if they knew they could get sumbody else. So yea its basically a foregone conclusion lee is gone.

  • Javy

    They’re still boring to watch.

  • kh

    damaged goods.

  • Joey E.

DLee > for less money, but Amare gives them the opportunity to do a lot more. so meh

  • Joey E.

and by “do a lot more” I mean in terms of personnel. Like Melo or Bron. I think those guys would rather have Amare than DLee, but I wouldnt

  • Overtime

I don’t know why people think Amare’s game will ‘blow up’ because of D’Antoni’s system…he was in that system before remember? And he had Nash then!
Who’s he got at the moment? Is Chris Duhon still there?

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

    And it’s official. FML.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Anton

Lakers just ordered cakes for the inevitable 2011 Western Conference cake walk.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

Yep its now official The New York Knicks who have been waiting for this FA frenzy for 3 years have just got what they came here for…..Amar’e Stoudemire….

  • backboard

100 mil/5 years? why is nobody talking about that? dont get me wrong, amare is a great player, but no 1st tier! if they dont sign either lebron or wade, then a) this whole mission free agency 2010 is a big fat L for the Knicks and b) im counting on Amare to try in the beginning, realizing its a lost cause, and riding out that huge contract with a half-a§§ed effort…..

I just cant get over the fact that he never averaged more than 10 rebs/season even once in his career.

  • Overtime

I like Amare, I’ve always been a fan of him and his (offensive, at least) game. With this move, he gets what he wants (assuming Lebron doesnt come to town).
It will be HIS Knicks, Amare and the Knicks. And the Knicks do at least get their most marketable player of the last decade.
Amare will post big numbers, get the all-star game, almost certainly get them into the playoffs.
And, depending on match ups, they could even make it to second round.
But I’m still not a fan of this move.

  • Overtime

co-sign Backboard. New York hasnt been waiting for this fabled summer just for Amare. All they get is marketing, it’ll take years to put a decent team together.
(and waiting for Carmelo? I really, really dont see that happening)

  • http://slamonline.com Fut,

  • Fat Lever

Hahahaha, I can’t wait to see how well Amar’e does with a PG nowhere near Nash’s ability feeding him the ball. If I were the Knicks, I would be looking for someone like Maynor to assume the reigns at the PG spot.

  • http://www.nba.com/sun Dacre

    Sure he’ll get numbers.

    My Dream MSG Big 3
    Melo, Stat, and Gilbert

  • http://www.tonysport.wordpress.com younjedifresh

its a good move..knicks need a legitimate all-star and Amar’e fits it. they need to get Felton or sign and trade for a PG

  • http://slam.com andrew

iamorange4ever-gil wont work he’l just pull a gun on dantoni and get suppended again melo will never be in msg but u never know about stat

  • Joints

Why is SLAM so late in reporting this as official?

  • Hembergler

I hope for three years of ruining their team they wind up with a little more than just Amar’e. On the otherhand, maybe that’s just karma for serving their fans three years of godawful basketball.

Also, Amar’e with a max contract? Ouch.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@Anton: if you think Amare was the difrence in LA path trough the West youre a lot less informed about bball then i would´ve thought…youre cluessed Anton, our Slam funny dude…THE WEST IS STACKED, Thunder, Blazers (if Oden can on the court), and Rockets WILL GIVE LA A RUN for their money, no cake walks here dude, this is not the East!! and im not mentioning Jazz,Nuggets,SA,Dallas,SacTown(if Cousins pans out), Clips(if Griffin came out like gangbusters), etc, etc, maybe even Suns without him.

  • Jj

    Allan Houston 2010

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

clueless was what I was going for to anton…and Amare chased the money but showed a lot of guts being the first one to commit to NY in a tough situation.

  • knock knock

Why is everyone complaining about Amare’s contract?? Two words: Joe Johnson. I’m sure ATL would of rather payed amare than stuck with Joe, a man who fails to come up big during the playoffs.

  • Spetsnaz

I didn’t think it was possible but the knicks just got worse on the defensive end!

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

now find a good PG and a defensive center..

  • bashmo

lol Fut you gave me a solid laugh, but how will things work out for phx?? Without Amare in their lineup they wont manage to make playoffs, this was evident through last year where he couldnt play the second half of the season thanks to an eye injury. Forget half the season, they wont have him at all this time, and to top that no Shaq, in other words no force underneath. The cherry on top of this obvious almost dead Suns organization is that Steve Nash is not getting ANY younger, and his time will be up VERY soon(He’s hitting 37 come next February). Oh and neither is Grant Hill might I add.

Just when they seemed to be building a contender, everything goes BOOM. Bye bye Phoenix. New Orleans is back in the playoff race people!!!

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

    Gotta co-sign Knock Knock.

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

Phoenix’s problems AREN’T just Amare leaving, it was just he was the silver lining every year… You gotta understand, Nash and Hill are PAST the age of retirement for NBA players. The fact that they still ball is just astounding. The third star, Richardson, is only going to get worse as he’s a player based around a lot of athleticism. What made Phoenix a contender EVERY year was that people knew AMARE WAS COMING BACK and he could get BETTER every year. Now that he’s gone, there’s nothing that can be written in the pros column for a Phoenix season preview. The top three guys on the team are gonna have an average age of 35(!!!) at one point during the season.
    Ugh, where’s my vodka.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

if only sarver could prioritize winning more than money. This team is, imo, at least two parts away from making the finals,. a defensive center thats also a great rebounder i.e. a haywood type, and another defensive small forward that could knock down the open 3 and score on the attack.. look, they’re set at all spots, starter and bench, aside from this two mentioned.. (including stat) defensive center- stat-defensive sf-jrich-nash.. (bench), lopez-frye-hill-dudley-dragon,. not mentioning barbosa/amundson.. they have trading pieces in their bench or work by S&T (i.e. Barbosa).. this year was i think was the closest they had in nash-era because they played serious D! And they dont even want to capitalize on it. I think amare got turned off because of the clauses in his contract concerning his health.. In weeks they turned out to be a rebuilding team! i’m happy for steve kerr..

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’ll be really sad to see David Lee go, as a fan who appreciates loyalty and hard work. But at the same time I’m really happy we got Amare Stoudemire. Mike D’Antoni pretty much admitted the only reason they drafted Jordan Hill was because they wanted another Amare Stoudemire…
I’m hoping for this Monta Ellis deal to go through. I’d prefer the Knicks build around the up-and-coming Ellis and his improvements, and not settle for literally BUYING an entirely flawless team to win.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

“Hahahaha, I can’t wait to see how well Amar’e does with a PG nowhere near Nash’s ability feeding him the ball.”
@ Fat Lever: The Knicks have a sophomore by the name of Toney Douglas, and he will be a great QB for Amare Stoudemire. If D’Antoni actually lets Douglas start for a change, Amare will love this kid.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

@teddy: you gave A LOT of faith on Douglas dude, every post, hes good, dont know if starting material on a contender though…I root for Portland but I would like to see the Knicks compete for the West, dont know why either, great crowd and old school arena possibly…oh and to Anton: Houston and Nawlis with a healthy CP3 ARE BETTER THAN ALL BUT THE TOP 3 TEAMS IN DA EAST LAST YEAR…as you know, both didnt even made the playoffs!

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

knicks compete for the East championship, man its late…

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

amare will/can get 23 and 8 on his own.. maybe not completely.. the point is he can do that even w/o elite point guard.. And about ellis? hmm.. I have mixed feelings ’bout that.. though ellis is a great player especially in an open running offense.. he needs a lot and demands a lot of ball..

  • http://4Aitkenroad,Hamilton,ScotlandML37YA Hambone

side show bob and the rest of the east coast pf`s better stock up on crash helmets.if lebron bails on nyc though does amare really make up for that?has ny even gone after wade?

  • SamJ

    Suns should go after Lee…

  • T-KO

    Antonio McDyess 2.0, I´m afraid…

First the Knicks get STAT, then 12 months later comes MELO. That extension offer by Denver might just sit and rot on the table while Denver’s only substantive move this off-season will likely be bringing back Josh Kroenke’s BFF, Linas Kleiza aka LK. Remember they passed on Ron Artest to keep LK? In the end, all Melo will get done staying in Denver is inflate Karl’s regular season win total and sell tickets for the Kroenke circus at the Pepsi Center. Oh and don’t expect Joe Dumars to keep bailing the Nuggets out. Not to digress, but I bet you if Ray Allen were in Melo’s shoes, he’d probably leave skid marks on his way out of Denver.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Anton

@Sporting – Gasol can and will murder any of those teams’ front lines you just mentioned.

  • http://iamBCtoday@yahoo.com iamBCtoday

it would probably help the NYK. If Amare recruit lebron. its a nice combo. pick and roll combo. then lebron can recruit cp3? how about tmac. we know that he is a good player. we will see if what he can do next season. dont thnk about melo next summer. if they have now a lebron. and tmac will go to paycut.
