Nets Confident After Meeting with LeBron James

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

LeBron James — who is reportedly expected to make a decision about his future by Monday — spent about five hours meeting with potential new employers yesterday, and at least one of the parties left these exhausting get-togethers feeling mighty chipper.

Mikhail Prokorov, Jay-Z and the rest of the New Jersey Nets’ front-office couldn’t have been happier with the way things turned out.

The media that covers the Nets — the Star Ledger and NY Post, to name a few — tell the story of a happy day in New Jersey:

We’re told by two people who are in contact with the Gang of 6 that it went so well with LeBron James today, they’re not fretting Rudy staying home – or even discussing any contingencies – yet. “All cards are on the table with LeBron,” one team official said. “It went that well.”

The one downer is that LBJ is telling some folks that he’ll make up his mind Monday. That can’t be good for the Nets, could it – that they won’t be able to get him to commit to a visit? “No, we’re told he’ll make up his mind without a visit – he knows the area well enough,” another team official said.

The Nets were extremely pleased with their showing and left feeling they are definitely in the hunt to land James when signings begin July 8. James was described as “very engaged” in the proceedings, asking questions, specifically about the ability to sign another max contract guy, such as Bosh. The Nets would need another $3 million or so. Believe it, they’ll find a way if necessary. As for James, he left after a later meeting with the Knicks, and offered no comment.

Of course, none of this means LeBron will sign on the dotted line and make the move to Newark next season. But the Nets are feeling happy and encouraged about their chances in this historic derby.

So, they’ve got that got that going for them. Which is nice.

They’re dreaming. Absolutely 0% chance that he lands in the swamp! I see a fit of consciousness overcome him forcing him to re-sign with Cleveland.

  • boggs

uh, nets fans…don’t get too attached.

  • NJ4Life

Everything has changed with this franchise since the change in ownership. Really is an exciting time for Nets fans, especially considering last season.

  • Will Lee

they are happy, but lebron’s not gonna sign with them. cuz he’s going to the clippers

  • JoeMaMa

LeBron gets Beyonce one day a week. And Jay Z gets mining concessions in Siberia. Strictly business.

Will Lee. You’re a liar and a thief.

If you’re a LeBron fan here’s a nice wallpaper for you as we all wait to see where he ends up… :)

The way the visits are set up with Lebron seems like a hierarchy of who’s got the best chance. First day he sits down with the Knicks, who have been preparing for him for 2+ years, and the Nets, with his good buddy Jay. Both those teams probably have okay chances. Next up is Miami who probably has a slightly better chance because of Wade and Riley. The final day of sit-downs appears to be the two front-runners, Cleveland and Chicago. I completely disregard the Clippers, because…well because they are the Clippers and should always be disregarded.

I always thought that LeBron was going to stay in the Cavaliers but i guess not. DWade, Bosh, and LeBron should all go to Chicago to win a championship cuz of Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah

The Nets are to the Eastern Conference what the Clippers are to the Western Conference. They are trying to sell LeBron on some of the same things. However, NJ has Avery Johnson as their coach. They put themselves in their own coffin in the LBJ sweepstakes by doing so. The Clippers probably will not end up with LeBron, but I’d love to see Larry Brown go to LA and coach him.

Why are people so convinced he’s not going there? They have a franchise center in Lopez. A good point guard that likes to run, a beast in Favors at the 4, Jay Z, a comitted owner, they’ll be in NY in a few years. If they can convince him that they can get Amare, Bosh or even Boozer…

  • C-Lo-The-Great

well they did just finish 12-70 with a “franchise center” and a “good pg” although i hear newark is a wonderful place during the season but it could be better than clevand

  • slamfan4life

still have a feeling he goin to the windy city

never thought i would say this but the nets have an incredible chance of signing bron.. the have one of the best centers in the nba in lopez, and i expect them to deal harris off for someone who would better fit brons game.. favors seems like he will be a beast on the block and complement lebron as better version of jj hickson.. but do not sell out on favors yet for he is untested in the nba.. zero experience and he still might be the next darko so we cant really say anything about him.. the only knock on nj is that they can only offer lebron a team that can compete for a championship in a couple of years whereas other teams (such as chi-town or miami) can offer lebron the chance to win a ring immediantly.. this might be the only thing that knocks them out of the run for lebron.. and also does anyone really believe he is meeting with chi-town last for no simply no explainable reason?

If Lebron was smart he would sign with the Nets and get Boozer to come with him. Harris, Williams, Bron, Boozer and Lopez is a good starting line up and Favors to me is a young Amare. BUT Lebron will sign with the Cavs and get mad love in Cleveland, but not win any rings. Miami is Wade’s team and the New York media would kill Lebron, when he doesn’t get to the NBA finals. In Cleveland, he can just play. OHIO WINS, BOOK IT!!!

    Sorry for that

I’m getting sick and tired of Jay z thinking he’s awesome. He’s washed up, old, and doesn’t know anything about basketball. He is a minority holder in the team! That doesn’t make hime a guru (r.i.p.). Why the hell would LeBron go to a team with no hope and a dictatorial coach? He wont. Somebody please take the pipe away from NJ, they have had enough.

  • Justin

LOL @ the knicks and their fans. Talked for years only to be the 1st team Lebron eliminated from contention…

I still think LBJ stays in Cleveland, but NJ does have a real shot. With the new owner, the Russian market will likely become Nets fans – and that’s a lot of additional exposure (similar to the Yao effect in Houston – however a player is a stronger draw than an owner). Add Lebron with another max guy or a couple very good players and they could compete for a championship next year. If LBJ coud take the Cavs so far, his chances with really talented supporting and a good coach – he can take them even further. Also, this puts LBJ in line to be the greatest Net ever and to be considered the person that brought the team into ‘greatness’. This is similar to what he has done in Cleveland and he could repeat that image in NJ. The other major contnders for LBJ can’t offer him this perceived ability to really ‘build a franchise’. The Knicks have been pitiful lately, but they are still the knicks with MSG and the history. The Bulls are already the house that Jordan built and Miami already has a star that LBJ would share the spotlight with. I don’t see any other team that can give Bron a 1) legit chance of winning a ring soon, 2) broader access to an global market AND 3) the opportunity to be considered the individual that brought the team to glory. This last point is hard to really quantify, but consider how many post and attention the Cavs would have had without LeBron and consider how many more fans and how much more attention LeBron would bring to NJ. Plus you have Jay-Z who will put LBJ in a few more of his songs… NJ has a very legit shot.

Derrick Rose > Jay Zea…… and thats the truth ruth !

The ECF every year with Lebron/Bosh v Wade/Amare will be thrilling.

  • Heat Seeker

It seems like this years Free Agency class is pretty much shrinking the league like the modern form of constriction. We’ll have super teams in Miami (Wade +1), NY or NJ, LA, Maybe Houston, Orlando.

In other news did anyone else see this D-Wade cover?

    Dwayne? Really guys?

  • http://slamonline.com Ben Osborne

Yes, Heat Seeker, I have seen that.

  • LA Huey

I’m still surprised at how he’s handling his free agency. I respect how he’s forcing teams to present their cases to him and not just wow him with parades, parties, and dinners. I’m also shocked that he’s saying he’ll make his decision so soon.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I also like how he’s handling this free agent frenzy. The fact that he’s really making it a business decison versus a decison coming out of parties and celebs like what the Knicks were hoping. I think many of the variable he considers are already know in terms of what a team can offer him, so I think letting the teams give him their sales pitches is largely to see if there is some new/unexpected items they can offer that he was totally unaware of. I assume he either totally eliminates a team right after or even during the meetings and in the end will come down to either staying with the Cavs or 1 of 2 other teams. He Wade, Bosh maybe Amare and JJ will have one final conversation and then all of them will have decisons made by Monday. Announcing the decisions will be the only delay. I really don’t expect any of them to take too long to decide because they all had most of the info already.

    Next Years Nets:

    Outlaw (Courney Lee?)

  • hoodsnake

werent they promised boozer if they drafted favours?

  • c_cantrell

@yo.. no way possible the nets could afford that roster.. they could in a coupe of years but not yet

  • Diesel

I’m sick of people talking about lopez and harris like they’re some game changing building blocks. These same guys were on the team when they only won 12 games. End of the day, whatever the Nets pitch, you can’t hide only 12 wins last year. @hisham congratulations homey. That second double header goal was amazing.

  • jufu

bron’s gonna save the nets thank god i can be a nets fan in public now without being beat up…

    courtney lee

Dude I hate how people are saying lebron will “finally” have a good supporting cast when no one was complaining when clevland was on their way to the best record in the NBA two years running.

  • nastierthanu

@ deecee its not the swamp anymore its brick city baby.

  • fonz

With a lot of luck the Bulls could land a starting lineup of
This could be possible if they do a sign and trade with Toronto/Miami/Cleveland buy trading Deng, Johnson and even Gibson
