Raymond Felton, Knicks Agree to 3 Years, $25M

It’s not exactly a bargain deal, but Felton is going to be key for the Knicks when the terms are finalized. From the NY Daily News: “The Knicks reached an agreement in principle Friday with Felton, the free agent who played five seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats, including the last two under former Knicks coach Larry Brown. The deal could be finalized as early as Saturday. Three days ago, Duhon signed a free agent contract with Orlando. Felton’s contract is believed to be a three-year deal worth approximately $25 million, which doesn’t preclude the Knicks from pursuing Chris Paul or Tony Parker next summer. The Knicks were also considering Luke Ridnour, but felt that Felton was the better player to go along with Amar’e Stoudemire and Danilo Gallinari.”

Thanks for the memories Raymond, good luck in New York. I dont see how the fit will work, but at least you got paid!

So bet, is dj now the starter?

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

Bt what r they gunna do with toney douglas?

  • nastierthanu

Unbelievable why are the knicks just burning thru money. This cat hasn’t proved that he’s worth almost 9 million a year and I love carolina.

  • anony mous

I like it for NY, apparently I’m the only one. I always liked Felton, he gets overshadowed by Paul and Williams… All-star? No. Good point to run D’antoni’s circus? Yea. He looks to pass first, can control tempo, and plays good D. If he could shoot more consistently he would be a 15-8 guy, similar to what Nash was before he went to Pheonix…

It’s an upgrade from Duhon, but really? 25 mil?

  • http://air-tsinelas.blogspot.com Roy

Not sure if that’s a steal for the Knicks but a good pick up nonetheless. :)

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    8-9mil per?

    Once again, congrats.

  • http://hoopistani.blogspot.com hoopistani

    great… we’ve needed a decent pg for a long time…

  • rainman10

Raymond Felton playing for D’antoni, with Amare and Danilo is worth that 8-9 million. That’s about how much Mo Williams makes. And I think Felton is better.

  • http://slamonline.com Matt Lawyue

Again, I like the move by Walsh. Good signing.

  • Stickz

This is a really good signing. Felton will be able to push the ball, as he did at Carolina. He should thrive under D’Antoni. And don’t forget, people were saying the same thing when Nash signed for his contract in Phoenix.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

WHY?! This is f*cking ridiculous, START TONEY DOUGLAS! If Felton starts ahead of Douglas this move is total sh!t.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

People who like this move have absolutely NO IDEA about Toney Douglas. SMH can the Knicks management be any more stupid? We’ve gotten good talent from the Warriors, we don’t NEED Felton. We have Azubuike and Wil Chandler to play the 2, Chandler/Gallinari/Randloph at the 3, and TONEY DOUGLAS at the point guard spot. Why pay Felton that much money is he clearly should come off the bench for Douglas?

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

Teddy: inhale, exhale. Anyway, don’t be surprised if you see Douglas and Felton playing a lot together. Remember who the coach is, he did the same thing with Nash and Barbosa. I understand your frustration (especially because I don’t get letting Lee walk and signing Stoudemire) but my guess is Douglas will still play a lot.

  • http://www.hibachi20.blogspot.com BETCATS

haha you guys are funny if you think Felton is a 7 seconds or less guy. He is and will always be a 13 seconds or more player. The UNC offense was so high voltage because it was based off defensive plays that lead to fast breaks. The Knicks dont play defense, so the comparison is invalid. Since he has came to the NBA, Felton likes to take his time and get everyone involved. He is an average at best shooter. New York bought a name with the hype of ‘best free agent pg’ not a player. Bad fit. But good luck to him.

  • rainman10

I dont remember the 7 seconds or less Suns ever playing defense.

  • rainman10

And if Knicks fans would rather have Toney Douglas start than Raymond Felton, well they must really like never being in the playoffs.

  • http://slamonline.com coldasice

well how I see it is. the point guard spot is up for grabs. since they didn’t draft a pg. td and ray going to be battling for that spot. besides with d’antoni ray’s going to start and td will nate kinda mins.

  • http://slamonline.com coldasice

well how I see it is. the point guard spot is up for grabs. since they didn’t draft a pg. td and ray going to be battling for that spot. besides with d’antoni ray’s going to start and td will get the nate treatment.

  • Sporting-Lisbon-Blazers

co sign rainman10…@teddy: dont let your mancrush on Douglas (who I like as a backup/15 to 20 min guy) blind you trough the fact that this move makes the Knicks a playoff contender to the 5/8 seed.

  • NYK 4 Life

I like the signing. For someone who shared time with dj he has good numbers. I’m just trying to figure out our starting 5. Felton at the 1. Chandler as the 2. Gallo at the 3. Randolph at the 4 and amare as our 5??? Can’t wait till the fall. Also yo david stern if u raise the league pass price I will look for u na mean

  • http://joeloholic.wordpress.com Joel O’s

What. Was it just a month or two ago that he got eaten up alive by Nelson?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Joel – I think NYKs thinking is that, “hey anyone that got some playoff games under their belt last year is welcome here…”
This isn’t such a bad thing for them – essentially they’ve upgraded the PG spot because you have two PGs that could play along side each other at different times and it’s just great that the Knicks are getting trying to build a decent roster. Gallinari and Amar’e could both make the allstar team this year….

  • http://myspace.com/weezyleezy337 GametimeWeezy

I think its a good move because he is obviously an upgrade from Duhon (worst starting pg in the league last year besides Earl Watson)…and I don’t think it will hurt the development/progression of Toney Douglas who will see 25-30 plus minutes per game. If he can beat out Felton for the starting spot that’s even better…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000580635564 Bryan

Teddy , for the last time, Douglas is NOT a point.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Dude, he can rack up assists better than anyone else on the Knicks…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

rainman10: You’ve got to be kidding me. This is about the future–the Knicks are still rebuilding, and ready to make the playoffs. But Felton is NOT the answer to the Knicks’ future–Douglas is.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Although Bryan is right in that Douglas can also play the SG, but he would still be great as the point guard.

  • Clay

I’m always somewhat dumbfounded when a team that isn’t close to being a top competitor goes out and signs a guy like this. Yes, Felton will help, but why not load up on draft picks and develop young players like in MLB?

  • The-Influence

Like this move. Douglas isn’t a true point guard, but he’ll stick get a lot of minutes off the bench, in a Nate-esque type role. Plus TD will learn a lot this year coming off the bench as the PG most of the time. I’d be totally against him starting at PG at this stage of his career. Felton will be fine. The Knicks season depends on Gallo. If he can play the way he ended last year, then him and Amar’e can become one of the best combo’s in the league.

  • http://www.NBHHCM.org DunkadelicKobe24

Ray Felton is a very good point guard. He has a winning mentality like most UNC ballers that win a Championship. If LeBron James would’ve joined New York then the Kinicks would have a nice nucleus with a steady point-guard, the best swing player in the game, and one of the 3 best post players in the game. The team would have balance all it would’ve needed is a 5-man supporting cast that knew their roles and played within a system that preached defense and rebounding. That is what makes a Championship ball club.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I am happy for Felton, I know he is celebrating right now, because he didn’t get the respect he deserved from Bobcats. So now the Bobcats can put the overrated DJ at point guard, but I bet Collins comes in and takes the starting point guard gig.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Thanks Gerard, I certainly hope Douglas gets his props and plays starting minutes.
Douglas is the f’ing man, for those that didn’t see him play today. He is also wet from 3 point land, and we all know how much D’Antoni loves his shooters.

  • I am the walrus

    What, no Damon Jones signing?!?

  • AmareFan

    25 mil is a lot…

but it’s a unique choice of pg for D’Antoni, no?

  • AmareFan

    Whoops, wrong link. Sorry everyone.

    Meant to share this article:

Great move by the Knicks. They get a pure Point Guard who can dictate play time, and his contract is only guaranteed for 2 years. Meaning, when Paul and Deron’s contracts are up they can get them.

He is also an easy trade piece, should they need to trade for either of those guys. Brilliant move by the Knicks.
