Steve Blake, Lakers Reach 4-Year Deal

Insurance indeed. Not only does Blake help replace Jordan Farmar if he decides to leave, the Lakers now have ‘PG insurance’ if contract negotiations sour with Derek Fisher. From the L.A. Times: “In case Derek Fisher doesn’t come back, the Lakers have some insurance. The Lakers agreed to terms on a four-year, $16 million deal with veteran point guard Steve Blake on Friday, giving them a pass-first player with a decent three-point touch.”

Someone inform me…does this mean the Lakers cannot sign Mike Miller now?

  • Joe

    Excellent signing.

  • Joe

Yeah, they now can’t sign Miller – Blake takes up the majority of their MLE.

  • loaf

    great pick up!

  • http://RickyRude@hotmail.com RickyRude

Well, lets just say Fisher will sign again. And I don’t know if this is the greatest signing. Blake doesn’t show up every game, he is soft on D and O. And Mike Miller would have opened the O up a lot for the Lakers. I am kind of hoping this is something where we pick Blake up and trade him off for Raymond Felton!!

There is a first for everything!!!

  • The Philosopher

    @James the Balla:
I have no problem agreeing with you, my friend, for to me, you’ve made an interesting comment.
It feels good to me that you appreciate me agreeing with you, though.
    Much respect to you, brethren.

  • Clay

Best signing of the young off-season.

  • lupe

Steve is the man…National Championship in high school, National Championship in college, and now the potential to have one at the pro level. Wonder if anyone has legitimately done that before? SLAM…ya’ll better know this!

  • The Philosopher

^^ Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul – Jabbar, Isiah Thomas, Rodney McCray. I do know this.

  • http://www.shawnkemp.com JACO

^^Imma one up you on this one philospher….Jerry Lucas.

Steve Blake was a solid signing for the Lakers. I think Derek Fisher stays in LA for less than he is asking for from the Lakers. It is a foregone conclusion that Jordan Farmer signs with another team. Actually, I could see Farmer signing with the Knicks, Pacers, or the Heat.

  • kudos

STEVE BLAKE?!? WDF. I know the laker’s needed a good white pg, but they should’ve gotten KIRK. Steve blake isn’t a step up above the pg’s they have now, as he’ll get just as killed against Williams, Cp, Rondo, and whoever the hell else he’s matched up against. When i think of blake, i think of someone who think’s of himself as clutch, and then he goes and fires up a prayer from beyond 3 point line, only to AIIRBAAALL. I know the laker’s are stacked, but if it’s not an obvious upgrade, dont do it.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/users/42594-hoops4life Overtime

Im not sold on it. I’d much much rather have miller

  • lupe

One thing about Steve Blake, he’ll whip 99% of the NBA ballers ASS in a real fight. I swear, dude can straight GET DOWN. I ain’t lying! I do realize the majority of the NBA is soft as hell in real life situations, but still, he is a beast.

  • snasty10

@lupe, what do you mean by that comment? are you saying he was an amature boxer or mma fighter? just wondering

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

solid pick up. I don’t remember the last time the Lakers had a pass-first point guard..lol

  • The Philosopher

    To JACO @10:53a.m.
    Good sh!t.
I knew there was one more guy, but because I couldn’t think of his name immediately, I got full of myself, and figured the guys I mentioned were the only ones. LOL.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

I considered Smush Parker a pass first pg. For the main fact all of his shots missed so bad, we usually got an offensive rebound. Which then Kwame would miss the layup/dunk. And then Aaron Mckie would pass on his knowledge and make sure to let Brian Cook know where exactly to hit the rim so that it could miss horribly as well. And in the end Chris Mihm representing… but back to pg’s. Kareem Rush was also an amazing passer, right up there with Smush!! Good times.

Kirk was outa their league cuza contract, Blake is like Farmar with a brain, or Steve Nash without the hair or flash…crucial though is bringing back Fish, let’s hope he plays the Lamar negotiations, then comes in happy enough to repeat… and eventually retire as a Laker player then move a few seats closer to the coach as one of the top 2 assistants, there’s money to be had there, and eventually as a head coach, and Phil will tell you, there’s money there. Geez, Byron is probably going to make in one year what he made in his entire playing career…c’mon fish, think down the road…the city loves you and you love the city. The Lakers will not screw you.

  • http://air-tsinelas.blogspot.com Roy

Wow! Good pickup for the Lakers.

  • http://www.clownpenis.com Tarzan Cooper

Hey kareem rush won a game in 04 wcf single handly

  • http://www.slamonline.com Klav

James the balla – I miss the days of smush mihm Walton and vujacic running the floor. we was unstoppable…except against phx :[

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

Oh ya real unstoppable… it’s said when you get excited about hearing the announcer’s say “Smush parker is pushing the ball up the floor, quick pass to Luke, Luke squares up, he hits the cutting Kwame Brown, Brown with the leaner … out of bounds, Wolves ball”.

  • http://soundcloud.com/boy-sanchez Boy Sanchez

That’s the best sign this summer so far.

  • javy

We needed a solid pointguard who is not flashy who can pass and shoot the three. I know his shots look akward but he’s solid.
Enough defense to complement Kobe and Ron.
This is a step up from Farmar.
Now anybody we get will be a plus considering Bynum will be ok.

  • http://www.slamonline.com James the Balla

If we keep Brown then I am fine with this signing. We need a pg with speed to throw on the floor.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Free Adam Morrison… Winning championships is meaningless if you dont play a single minute..

  • lupe

@snasty10 – always boxed a little bit, and has always been scrappy, never afraid of an altercation but not one to start one either. He has been doing MMA training for about 5 or 6 years, but waaaaay before then he used to throw a little bit. I swear, dude is for real.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Negetivekreep

Nice move. Mike Miller would have been better but its not like Kup’ didnt hit him up first. He oubviously wanted more money, while Blake was willing to take less. 4 mil spent on SB is money well spent as apposed to money spent on Farmar. That would be repaeting the same mistakes they’ve already made with Walton & Vujacic, who r each getting 5 mil.

  • Coney Islander

Makes me wonder what the Knicks are doing sitting on their a$$es!

  • http://www.nba.com/sun Dacre

I guess if you can’t get steve nash you might as well get someone that looks like him…. well… when your completely drunk of your face and you can’t walk or breath…you might see steve blake *hey same first name* and think hey it’s steve….. but not the good one.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Great pick-up by the Lakers.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Sheeeit, thanks for the info lupe…

  • Tweaks

i guess scouts keep track of the systems that the players have played in their past………so maybe this adaptability to the triangle could be a more solid reason….for such safe approaches on selecting pg’s. I’m not saying that Blake ever played in the triangle (wild guessin here)….but i’m sure somebody on the lakers…valued his potential adaptability to the system before the mo’rondo’nateNESS that most laker fans would envision…..(price too)

  • Tweaks

PS: does anyone know anything on the T-mac rumour????? is it still
    do-able?

  • Yesse

It’s good, but i still hope Fish will be back and i hope they can get Miller.

  • Bruno

    great fit for the triangle!!!!

Use to be an avid Laker/Coby fan. NO MORE. They truly suck as a team and alot of us hope they don’t even make it into any playoff berths. They certainly don’t deserve it. I hope they figure out their problems such as ego, inside team jealousy, etc.
