Trade: Sessions, Hollins to Cavs; West, Telfair to Wolves

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

David Kahn and the Minnesota Timberwolves’ quest to trim the team’s payroll goes on uninterrupted.

The latest move involves trading away three assets to Cleveland in return for two they will almost surely get rid of as soon as possible.

The Star Tribune has details of the swap:

They have traded point guard Ramon Sessions and forward/center Ryan Hollins — two players David Kahn signed last summer to multi-year deals — as well as a 2013 second-round pick to Cleveland for two players who likely will never wear a Wolves jersey. They receive in return guard Delone West and former Wolves guard Sebastian Telfair.

Expect West to be waived by an Aug. 5 deadline so they can pay him only $500,000 of a mostly non-guaranteed $4.6 million salary. Telfair probably will be either bought out of the final year ($2.7 million) of a three-year deal Kevin McHale originally signed him to three years ago or traded away before training camp, if the Wolves can find a team willing to take him.

The deal further pares the Wolves’ payroll. Expect them to sign a veteran point guard to a one-year minimum contract as their next move. Available players who fit that profile: Earl Watson, Anthony Johnson, Rafer Alston, Earl Boykins and maybe Chris Quinn or Jamaal Tinsley.

Sessions will fill the role of backup point guard to Mo Williams, something Cleveland had been looking to shore up. The good news for Minny is that they get to save themselves quite a bit of cash, and will have some financially flexibility going forward. What they ultimately decide to do with that, of course, is anyone’s guess.

It’s not all good news, however. According to Yahoo!, point guard Johnny Flynn will miss at least three months because he needs hip surgery. Yikes. The team is expected to release a statement regarding this report sometime today.

Call me crazy, but I think Delonte would be a great pick up for the Celts if he is released. He’d fit great in Miami too….but..you know… that whole “Mommy ate something that wasn’t supposed to belong to my ex-teammate” thing.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

i think it’s a headache that a lot of teams aren’t going to be willing to deal with.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Yeah, Delonte isn’t good enough to make up for his craziness…not worth it.

  • http://www.realcavsfans.com Anton

Delonte is hands down one of my favorite players ever on the Cavs. He’s about as talented as they come in the NBA. Can handle, shoot, defend, and finish. If he was about 3 inches taller and normal he would be one of the best guards in the league.
Just wish the guy had his head on straight because it feels like he’s wasting so much talent.
    Thanks for the memories, Redz.

very good trade by my cavs.. nice work by chris grant.. Sessions might be the pure pg were looking for to run this offense by scott.. and if hollins can turn into a very good back up center i’d be very happy.

  • ConeyIslander

Hopefully Sebastian can land on his feet finally.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Ramon Sessions to me could be one of those surprise PGs that become a 3rd if not 2nd tier level in the NBA. Those 20 assist games he had late in the year in his rookie season?? It shows he just needs the minutes to produce. If Cleveland move a few more pieces and get 10-13 guys on the same page come training camp, they have a LEGIT chance at getting that 8th seed and you know who they could be facing?? Thats right, the Miami Heat. THAT would be an interesting series…. get this thing done Cleveland.

  • http://Slamonline.com Mvp23100

    @Eboy
If he did go to the celts we can see a replay of bron dunking on his soul and landing on his chest again

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

delonte is the most versatile teammate lebron has ever had. that guy has a better post up game than bron, ill surely miss him on this team..

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Realistically, I could be a more supportive fan of cleveland with LeDance Dance gone than I was when they had him?!

  • whoooo!

man, i didn’t know Telfair was on the same team as Bron… who woulda thunk, remembering that Slam cover back in the day, how unexciting their combination would be.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Did I really see a Chris Quinn reference in this piece? Really? Anyway, Sessions should start at point for the Cavs and move Mo to the two…Scott should go all Don Nelson with the club just for the hell of it. The team is athletic enough now that they don’t have any lumbering centers to slow them down. Put Hickson at 5, Jamison at 4, and Moon at 3. Why not? Andy can still come off the bench. As for Minnesota…what the hell is David Kahn doing? No team has made bigger noise about junk moves in the history of the NBA. I like Ridnour but stop with all the point guard movement. KKAAHHNN!

  • http://albayanos.com LeoneL

So Sessions will be backing up Mo again?

  • Young C

@whoooo! Telfair was injured pretty much the whole time with the cavs.

Man, Sebastian just needs one shot to prove what he’s worth, but now he’s possibly gettin traded again???? Crazy.

  • http://slamonline.com mike

sad to say but telfair could be out of the league with this – i hope he can be someone’s backup somewhere, as he has performed well in that type of role in the past

  • Hussman25

    Bassy is done. Period

  • Hussman25

    Should have went to Louisville

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

I hope Sessions could transform into a very very solid point guard. He won’t be the nash’es, paul’s ofcourse, but im wishing scott could help him to be a very good player.. The rumors before told that koufos and not hollins, is part of the original deal.. But i like hollins more because he’s more athletic and a shot blocker.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Moving Mo on 2 is likely but only on offense and Sessions would be 2 on D.. Hickson as said by Scott, would start and Jamison would be coming off the bench.. Andy will start at 5.. Twan could actually start at 3, he’s still better than Moon, like a Peja in Scott’s Nawlins..

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

It’s weird that Sessions has never been given the opportunity to start. He proved since his rookie season he can be a fantastic point guard, yet everywhere he’s been teams have tried to keep him in a back-up role. At this point he is probably a better player than Johnny Flynn, though I understand the Wolves wanting to develop their rookie (with good reason).

  • T-Money

E: that story can’t be true, right? I mean that’s some effed up sh!t even for Delonte. The thing that sounds fishy to me is that I can’t find a valid reason why he would go for Bron’s mom amidst all the 20-something models he prolly gets on the reg. But he did ride a spider with a shotgum on his back so who knows. He could be Miami’s combo guard off the bench.

  • horsey

i love delonte west. he has to be one of the players in the league most likely to stare down/choke/shank anybody regardless of the situation or their size. if he met matt barnes at half court for a staring contest the arena might burst into flames from all the anger…hope both those guys get legitimate minutes next year.

  • http://twincityslim@yahoo.com Jahi

How many point guards do the Timberwolves have on their roster again? Possibly, Kahn is the worst GM in the NBA right now. Kevin McFail may well be asking: Miss me yet?

  • tom

jahi, you totally missed the point…he´s not going to play for the wolves and they got rid of sessions with that deal. not sain kahn is a genius though :)

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

    Session > William…Start Sessions…

  • underdog

Ramon had a quiet year in Minny. I hope Bassy lands somewhere he get some playing time.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

Hopefully Sessions can flourish in Cleveland.

  • Ronald

Delonte should be a player that’s coveted by most teams due to his versatility. He’s a true combo guard instead of a shooting guard that handles the ball too often.

  • logues

Jahi: i agree that kahn is terrible, but i was thinkin the other day that he could end up looking pretty good with that beasley trade if mike ends up puttin up all star numbers, which i think he will. also, if wes johnson has a good rookie yr and who knows what will happen with rubio(even tho i think he will suck anyway), the pups could have a decent team within the next few yrs if players develop into their potential

  • rainman10

@Jahi—the Timberwolves have 3 PGs on their roster. Flynn (injured for 3+ months), Luke Ridnour, and now Telfair who it looks like might be released. They just got rid of 2 contracts they didnt want or need. How was this a bad move by Kahn??

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

This actually feels like decent trade by Kahn. True, they now have a glut of swingman, and Telfair can give them quality minutes at the point, I think.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Didn’t read that everybody was going to be released. I don’t understand why they don’t keep Telfair since Flynn doesn’t seem like the answer at the one and Telfair knows how to get other players the ball in the right spots. Oh well.

  • logues

Alllenp: i would take flynn over telfair any day, plus they have ridnour

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

Allenp.. i think they know bassy is not the answer too since he played for them before..

  • Chris

Delonte West? Mothers, lock up your….selves

  • Stillballin

This trade is gonna change the landscape of the NBA..

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

    I can’t wait for Delonte’s decision when he’s a free agent.

  • unrel

so.. on paper.. how many PGs have minny had in the last year?

  • twinparadox

    can’t believe there’s a LeBron mention in this post…
and I thought Justin Bieber was everywhere

  • The D Train

Am I the only one that was completely jazzed for a Beasley-Delonte pairing? Doesn’t Beasley seem like Delonte’s little brother? A couple of smoked-out dudes, covered in tats, rappin’ about KFC and just out to cause general havoc amongst the white-out in Minnesota? Seriously, could that not have been an awesome sitcom? Kahn, the uptight and semi-retarded boss who tries to pass on his “wisdom” to the two young bucks using terms like “Mes thinks,” and Beasley and West, two fish out of water, just trying to fit in in a world that has never seen the likes of them before.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    I forgot about Ridnour.
I like Bassy. Dude is smart. If he was three inches taller, he would have no problem staying in the league.

  • http://www.slamonline.com JL

minny just upped their PG count by one. kahn is closer to his ideal team of all PGs. webber still won’t look at him.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

Co-sign the D train… D west and Mike Beas is one of the most interesting duos i cud think of… Minni shud consider keeping Delonte for sole entertainment purposes

  • L

Bassy is about to unite w his cousin in china.. L

  • robz

    poor cavs team

  • topo

why does minessota always trying to unload salary? no good free agents ever want to go there

  • vtrobot

i always liked delonte’s game when he played for those sh*tty C’s teams. versatile, good blocking guard, not afraid to take the big shot. pretty strange, and entertainingly interesting dude. his issues obviously grew larger after he left boston. bassy’s NBA gun problems ain’t got sh*t on delonte’s! no way that the C’s take delonte back over eddie. i like delonte’s game a lot, but i think his “troubles” make that one a pretty easy choice.

  • JoeMaMa

Delonte West was just released so he could concentrate on releasing the highly anticipated rap album “KFC and me”.

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

    Enjoy Russia, Sebastian.

  • total scrotal implosion

Delonte ‘el mariachi’ west will be a very nice addition to a playoff team. Sessions has to back up mo again?

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

I like D-Train’s idea. I see Kobe or Ainge getting Delonte on their squad just to irritate Bron.

  • T-Money

Are we just going to assume that this story is true? Can someone that knows something confirm this?

  • http://chugachugachugachuchu.blogspot.com/ BETCATS

I love the fact that the next expected moves for the Timberwolves is to release 2 point guards then sign 1 point guard. That makes perfect sense.

  • http://Slamonline.com Niyasofresh

Didn’t Sebastian already play for the timberwolves at one point?
