Charles Barkley on LeBron James’ ‘Punk Moves’

Sir Charles has been going in on LeBron all summer long. He’s now asking for the top spot on James’ so-called enemies list: “Charles Barkley weighed in Wednesday on a recent Twitter statement by LeBron James. Barkley, a TNT analyst and former NBA  All-Star, said he hopes James remembers Barkley’s critical comments and called a couple of James’ more significant actions this summer ‘punk’ moves. ‘I heard about LeBron’s little tweet today that he’s remembering everybody who said anything bad about him,’ Barkley said Thursday on ESPN Radio 103.3 FM in Dallas/Fort Worth. ‘And he said ‘everybody.’ Well, I want him to make sure that he puts my name on that (list). I thought that his little one-hour special was a punk move. I thought them dancing around on the stage was a punk move, and I thought he should’ve stayed in Cleveland. Him joining Dwyane Wade’s team was very disappointing to me … That one-hour special, them jumping around on stage like punks, that wasn’t cool to me. From a basketball standpoint, I wish he had stayed in Cleveland, and if he takes that as criticism, so be it. He knows where I’ll be, I don’t run. I’m on TV every week, I’m easy to find.’”

Charles is to going to kick The King’s ass, or something? lol.
Chuck is sounding like a jealous o.g.

LOL @ charles “holla at a cheesecake” barkley, dude’s just mad that LBJ is actually going to win a ring

  • http://minusthebars.blogspot.com Don

Barkley needs to move on with his life. What the hell would LeBron look like staying in Cleveland?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I love Charles…always have, but dude needs to grow the fuck up. Lebron could buy and sell him 5 times over and is a better basketball player than Charles ever was. Mike can make this type of statement about Bron and have it stand on it’s own. Even Kobe could get away with it. Shaq too. These guys have done MORE than Lebron has done. No questions asked. Charles did nothing better than Lebron in is career. This is just petty hate from a guy who never exceeded his limitations as a player. If Lebron retires without a ring after 15 seasons, THEN Charles would have a place to open his mouth. Sorry Chuck, you’re a crotchity bit*h.

  • Atrain

    Barkley is the man

  • Ali

Get’ em Chuck!! Gotta love Charles, HOF career, brushes with the law, has his flaws, but always bounces back. One of our most outspoken sports advocates. Speaks his mind and gives his opinion concerning everything from politics to sports. Ain’t scare of voice his opinion about anything.
“I’ll throw it down your throat like Barkley!”…”Welcome to the Terrordome” – Chuck D

No guarantee that the Heat will win a ring. I’m with Chuck on what he’s saying. He never holds his tongue in this age of political correctness.

sh!t chuck what bext before all your criticsim of any player are you gonna say “Back in my day”? cosign wayno damn he does sound like a bitter grandpa.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Barkley is not jealous, he is keeping it real. What two time MVP, whose team had the best record two straight years leaves his hometown city to a team with already one superstar who led the Heat to a title to be a superstar sidekick. Barkley best line is ” Well, I want him to make sure that he puts my name on that (list). I thought that his little one-hour special was a punk move. I thought them dancing around on the stage was a punk move.” Barkley knows Dwade, done t mobile commercials together, just keeping it real and PUNK MOVES is PRICELESS. Thanks Barkley. BOOK IT!!!

I love Charles…always have, but dude needs to grow the fu*k up. NO ONE liked “The Decision” special. You’re opinion is not unique, Charles. Three guys celebrated an incredible move in the current landscape of sports that hasn’t happened before. How’d that affect you, fatty? You hated it? Yet you watched it? You must have motives no one else is seeing, because you sound like you missed out on something you could never be again. Relevant. Lebron could buy and sell him 5 times over and is a better basketball player than Charles ever was. Mike can make this type of statement about Bron and have it stand on it’s own. Even Kobe could get away with it. Shaq too. These guys have done MORE than Lebron has done on a basketball court. No questions asked. Charles did nothing better than Lebron in his career. This is just petty hate from a guy who never exceeded his limitations as a player. If Lebron retires without a ring after 15 seasons, THEN Charles would have a place to open his mouth. Sorry Chuck, you’re a crotchity bit*h. And I doubt you’d ever open your mouth in front of Bron. Stay suited up on the TNT stage and play the role of the opinionated jacka*s you’ve been for the last 10 years. Even your boy Mike has made fun of you for years. YOUR FRIEND. Think about it.

Oh yeah, and Chuck….for the last few years you’ve been pitching T-Mobile with Dwyane and then recently with Dwight and you’re always made to look like a dolt in those commercials as well. You ever think you’ve become a joke? Yeah, you have. A comical caricature of what once was a pretty solid analyst and speaker on things that resonated with people.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

The only people you are resonating with right now are these ^^^^ token imbeciles that are looking for any way to continue hating on a dude that is the hot button issue at this time. That’s some legacy.

  • jay23

  • Hedo Turkeyglu

LeCon stood in the shadows last night, Nike didn’t want him to get booed. Chuck’s the man!

  • http://slamonline.com bash

Charles has done nothing better than Lebron in his career? LOL. Do some research, take off your Heat jersey, and think about what you said. You’re honestly saying that Lebron has had a better career in 7 years than Barkely ever had? When did you start watching basketball? 2003? A 6’4 guy who played PF, had 30 rebounds in a game, carried his team to the finals, and put up numbers never exceeded limitations? Someone may be hating, and it’s not Charles.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Also, I defy SLAM to post their sales figures if they decide to do a Heat cover before the season starts. With the comments here daily and the readership that now is made up mainly of 13-18 year olds, I would imagine it could be amongst the lowest sold ever. I can’t buy 5000 issues myself!!!!

Brand Nubian should totally release a follow up called “Punks Jump Up To Bring The Heat Down”, they get nothin but a beatin!

  • charles snell

Charles Barkley probably should have done what LeBron did. After all, Charles never won anything. Gilbert needed to spend the bucks and show his hospitality to other stars to land one and get everything off one man’s back. It’s a team game: 5 on 5, not 5 on 1.

Charles sounds like me when I say “these kids today”… But, I recognize that times change, the business of sports has changed and the game I love is evolving. And I love it. So, i got no beef. And for the record, this game doesn’t pay any of my bills, Chuck. Just sit back and enjoy it AND your paycheck.

    @Cheryl:
For what it may be worth, I love your style.

Joining my best friend in MIAMI of all places for a shot at a championship? I dont know if that’s considered a ‘punk move’, but spitting on a little girl? The Punk-iest of moves Chuck.. before you start pointing fingers, make sure your hands are clean.

  • larrylegend

if LBJ had half the heart chuck showed, he would have a ring already or at least won a finals game.
chuck never would have quite during a playoff series…

  • Nick the Quick

There are only two things that are constant in this world: Change and Eboy’s feelings being hurt anytime anyone, credentials or not, criticizes the Heat and/or Lebron/ praises a Laker. It’s as automatic as Steph Curry’s stroke.

  • charles snell

hey larry, guess you didn’t see the double ot thriller in Detroit. He took it over, and if you ever played ball-probably not-you’d know that this was one of the greatest performances in NBA history. Sad that folks just don’t get it until THEY lace em’ up. The day of the one-man team (if there was ever such a thing) not only in the NBA but in sports overall, is dead. LeBron’s move was great for the league and everyone will watch no matter what their opinion….

  • charles snell

could not do it in Cleveland. The team he took to the finals (can you name the starting 5?) was of little support. Chicago was smart, drafted well by getting Scotty which gave them a nucleus from which to build on. They added Paxson, Grant, Hodges, Harper, Kukoc and others as role players with heart that could get the job done so Mike could get rest and come in fresh. Did LeBron ever get that?

  • http://www.phonetobuy.com LeoneL

He sure is easy to find.

  • Hussman25

Chuck aint lyin… Bron did do “punk” moves… plain and simple. TV announcment, that BS pep rally??? Chuck is just sayin what most of America feels abt Bron and the others @ this point. If they wanna change that perception go and win a ring…

  • T-Money

Why are people pretending like Bron owes them something? I get the criticism of the show and the “parade” (which is pretty f-cking trivial when you think about it, what’s the expiry date on those comments? as soon as the season starts?) but Bron should not give a flying f-ck what MJ, Magic or Charles think about the move to Miami. His career, his moves. Who are they to tell him that he should have to live and play in one city or another?

  • BBQ_Bowels

Chuck and LeBron just prove that no matter how many billions you might earn, $$$ cant buy class.

  • T-Money

One popular theory that will get shot down as soon as the season starts: Bron ain’t no sidekick. Even if he went to “Wade’s team”, he’s still a better player and they BOTH know it fully well. There’s an interview with Spo in a Manilla paper where he literally said that the leader of the team will emerge “organically” when he was asked if this was still Wade’s team.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

“I thought them dancing around on the stage was a PUNK move,” said Sir Charles. LMAO

  • hammer

@eboy/bash. Kids! Calm the f**k down. D-ZAM! Now who r the real “13-18 yrs olds” here huh?! Now,all barkley said was that he was DISSAPOINTED that lbj left the cavs. That’s his personal opinion. The part where he did speak the truth was lbj 1hr special. Now that WAS a punk move especially 2 the cavs fans, not so much the organization. Cavs fans deserved much better and I don’t mean that he shouldve stayed. What I mean was that he didn’t have 2 humili8 them on national TV. And yes I did watch the special cuz like like denzel says n training day,”its entertainment. It entertains me.” That plus I have no affiliation towards the cavs or the heat whatsoever. So it didn’t mean a thing 2 me. Now,eboy/bash, can we like keitel says n pulp fiction, “pretty please, with a cherry on top” have a reasonable discussion here? I bet we ALL here would appreci8 that

  • bakers’ dozen (12-13)

Charles is right. That whole “Look at me” special showed no class on LeBron’s part.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

You know, I feel everyone on their opinions of Chuck going in on Lebron. The game isn’t what it used to be, it is constantly shifting and evolving. Lebron has the right to do whatever he feels that is in the best interest of himself and his family. HOWEVER… And this is a question, not a statement… Have any (or most) of you EVER played a competitive sport in your life? Or at least have had/have any sort of competitive drive? Even now in my “Weekend Warrior” ball playing days, I see a kid the same size/frame as me killing, I don’t wanna be on his team. There ain’t a dude under 23 years old that I know that’s cool with all this… Eboy; I understand that you’ve been rider with the Heat since day one; I get laughed at myself when argue that Wade is at least on par with Kobe ability-wise. But your seriously gonna tell me that these moves; The Bosh/Lebron tweets, all this stuff; doesn’t bother you in the least bit? So Chuck/Magic/MJ etc. suddenly have no relevance in their opinion? If not, it’s cool; just saying.

  • lexluther703

I just find it funny how some of you lames are out here criticizing Bron’s every move like it somehow affects your everyday life. What’s even more comical is the fact that you’re the ones who check sportscenter at night looking for this guy on top plays, you’re the ones out here buying his kicks and jerseys, and you’re the ones who’re going to feel IGNORANT AS ALL HELL when dude whens ring after ring after ring.. Don’t hate on the man just cause he’s got the world in the palm of his hand while you can only dream about what that feels like, jealousy is a female trait, folks

They’re not the only guys in the league who sound ignorant each time they tweet. Just saying. But to hate guys because they were celebrated by their new team, in front of their home fans, after the ultimate coup by Pat Riley? It was two days later….the excitement down here was unparreled. I was there with my family…..I was excited, my 5 year old was mesmerized. I can’t be mad at the Heat for celebrating this unprecedented move of perhaps the games best talent coming to their squad to team with two other all-world talents. Any one else that downtalks is jealous. I’ve said this consistently.

Thanks Chuck for trying to demand RESPECT for the game like Jordan did.
It started when Bron was posing as if taking pictures before games, having his whole ritual, he looked like a stupid kid….then what did clevaleand get, nothing….he’s a freaking clown and I love it.
He’s starting to become another Garnett. Now he’s tough….Garnet had respect on the Wolves but then he went to Celtic’s and then the trash talking came.
The same with Bron, uuuhhhhh all be afraid. Chuck is the 1st to talk but what about the other professional players, you think they don’t feel the same!!!

    Sorry for the double post.

  • T-Money

I’m really surprised that so many people have a romantic take on this, aka the Bill Simmons argument. This is not a playground, the analogy doesn’t hold because what’s at stakes can not be compared. You try to assemble the best team under league rules to go out there and fight for championships. There are no ifs or buts. Otis Smith to me was the biggest hyprocrite in this because you can bet your life that he would have given up his entire roster if there would have been a legit possibility of pairing Dwight with Bron and Wade in Orlando.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

I think Sir Charles’s comments are kinda inappropriate and a lil’ 2 bitter 4 my taste. After all, Chuck left the 76rs 2 join the Suns (arguably running away from the Eastern Conf owned by MJ) and then later on when he reached the twilight of his career, BARKLEY JOINED The Dream and The Glyde in Houston. Only, it was one year 2 late.
So, is he hating on LBJ cuz he is doing what he hoped he’d done earlier? I mean, why take IT so personal???
Anyway, as I am the only fan LBJ has gained recently, at the end of the month, I’m gonna buy the very fly Nike Lebron VII Black and white Playoffs shoes that just hits Foot Locker here in London, and if I have some cash left, a MIA jersey too. LONG LIVE THE KING!

ok im going in on this… @ T-Money i couldnt have said it better myself brah these people dont realize yous ay he went to be a sidekick no he went to win as the leader of to other superstars point plank. @ Lexluther703- you damn as* right these hatin as* dudes dont realize Lebron got teh sports world in his hands. But to be real charles i had respect for him and his opinion prior to these comments. I feel he has no say YOU ARE RINGLESS!!! so it makes sense why your mad because YOUR DUMBAS* DIDN’T THINK OF THE IDEA FIRST!!!! thats what you are hating kobe, shaq, magic, jordan can voice opinions actually anyone with a ring can. But if you have no rings then shut up because lebron WITNESSED his crappy management and dipped.

I completely feel you Eboy; If anything, I feel like the ONLY one that should be posting positive statements concerning the Heat is you. As a New Yorker, I’m sure the feeling of Lebron for you and Miami was similar to the Giants getting a ‘chip some years back. At the end of the day I’m pretty sure that a lot of dudes; famous or not just feel like there was an extremely large amount of integrity lost amongst all of this from most of the parties involved.

  • Real Talk

Now let’s go to Miami and have a party, make sure the new girlfriend gets invited!!!

  • Mike

On a side note, I find it hilarious how people are referring to Chris Bosh as “All-World”. Can’t wait till you guys see this guy up close and personal for a year. And im Canadian and watch the Raptors quite frequently so I know how he is. He’s good dont get me wrong, but by no means is he a top-ten player in the league. Another thing on CB4 that you’ll learn over the next few months. He just tries so hard to be “cool” like Lebron and Wade but is such a nerd that it just comes off as embarrasing. His reactions to plays, the way he talks, you’ll see what im talking about. Oh, and Go Magic!

  • kundai

@joe yes he did he’s what i like to call an old b*tch

Barkley is a hater. I was still in Phoenix at the end of his time there and he b**ched his way to a trade to Houston to play Olajuwon and Drexler… to try and win a ring.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Spaceship and T-Money
Both of y’all made good points about the playground argument. That’s how I saw it from the jump, and how I explained with when the news came out before even reading what Simmons wrote.
But, then I reconsidered that while I thought it would be more competitive to go a different route, I undestood the benefits of doing it the other way as well. Plus, it’s not my life. What makes me happy, doesn’t make Lebron happy, and really shouldn’t have any bearing on how he makes life decisions. Unfortunately, that’s the dynamic that gets played up in sports. Fans are invested in teams and players and that’s going to create tension because any time you’re invested in someone you take their decisions personally. You feel that they should consider your feelings and well being, and honestly that’s not hte reality of the sports landscape. Fans have been sold a dream, and that’s why they’re angry.

  • http://www.slamonline.com wayno

Ok, I like most people think the whole decision thing was stupid, but honestly, the only reason it even enters my mind anymore is because idiots keep being fussy and bringing it up all the time. People just need to get over the fact that he probably made more money in that 1 hour special than they will make in thier lifetime. It is what it is, get over it!

  • http://slamonline.com Dave.

What, no Slam posting of Bron bricking all those shots in a theme park in Ohio? C’mon. Those clips made me sad, the guy shooting with one friend while everyone else stood around staring in, like he was the rich kid with no friends whose parents had to buy out the park for him.

  • http://slamonline.com Spaceship Jay

@T-Money; The playground analogy holds because at the end of the day it relates to who you are as a MAN (not literally you t-money). No GMs/other players/fans/endorsements/money. Just you. On another note, I hope and pray Lebron or someone affiliated with him are reading these posts; LEBRON, FIRE YOUR TEAM. NOW. Many on this site alone have posted ASTRONOMICALLY simple/better ways that this whole situation could have been handled from the start til’ now. It’s funny, I remember there being a lot of questioning from the media if hiring his friends to handle his PR business was the right move……………………… WA’LA! Fast forward to 2010.

@T-Money; The playground analogy does hold because it speaks to who you are as a Man (not litterally you T-Money). No GMs/Money/Endorsements/Fans etc. Just you. On another note, I pray that there is somebody out there that’s even remotely involved with Lebron reading these posts… Lebron, FIRE YOUR TEAM. NOW. The amount of posts on this site alone that spoke to how this situation could have been handled better from start til’ now is ASTRONOMICAL. I can recall that the media had a lot of questions concerning Lebron’s decision to fire his agent for his friends to take over his PR/business matters way back when……………………….. WA’LA! Fast-forward to 2010.:(

  • J

My problem with the whole situation is the blatant double standards. If Lebron would of stayed in Cleveland than the majority of people wouldn’t have called the “Decision” self promotion, but since he decided to leave Cleveland all of a sudden he’s a prima donna and no one takes into account that millions of people saw the telecast and the revenues from that telecast were donated. If Lebron would of gone to New York along with Amare and they would of had a celebration then it would of been viewed as the Knicks rejoicing at a well constructed plan going into fruition but since it happened in Miami everyone is frowning at it. The best comments on here are from people who call things for what they are. Yes, everyone can have an opinion but let that opinion be unbiased. I’m a Heat fan (so i’m trying to be as unbiased as I can) and I was ecstatic when Bosh said he was joining Wade and yes I rejoiced like a mothaf**** when I heard Lebron was coming as well but would I have gotten mad if he went to the Knicks, stayed in Cleveland or went on to play overseas? No, because he is a grown man and has the right to choose where he wants to play. At the end of the day i still love Charles Barkley because of his personality and what he brings to NBA commentating. People forget that Charles gets paid to comment on the NBA and it’s players so let him do his job he always manages to keep viewers entertained.

I agree with Barkley that LeBron leaving Cleveland was disapointing. I also agree with his thoughts about the 1 hour special and how he jumped around on stage at the celebration (I would not use “punk move” to describe the latter, but I get his point). Part of what I like about Barkely is that he always speaks his mind and doesn’t try to find ‘soft’ ways of saying things. This is also what I don’t like about Barkley because this same ‘honest truth’ can make him sound bitter or just too critical. However, he is very consistent in his style regardless if he’s talking about himself, a superstar or a scrub player. This is why I respect his opinions and views (which I don’t always agree with). Having a ring or not doesn’t give him any more/less credibility than anybody else. I would bet that him, MJ and several others have talked about LeBron’s decision etc. and that they feel very similarly about it. The difference is Barkley doesn’t have a problem going on public record with his thoughts (again could be a good or bad trait). Regardless, it doesn’t make since for Eboy or anybody else to questions Barkleys motives or call him bitter, as he was like this as a player in his prime and has shown consistent – although sometimes disturbing – critiques of anybody at any level of the game.

The 1hr long special stands on it’s own as a point to be critical over LeBrons ‘lack of taste and judgement’ the fact that he went to the Heat is a completely diffent issue and point of contention. If LeBron would have stayed in Cleveland people would have still been talking about ‘why would he do a 1 hour speical just to announce…’

  • Airmancw

Its funny that someone who forced a trade from philadelphia, only to go to phoenix and lose, then go try to win with houston at the end of his career with a washed up hakeem, pippen. Not to mention off the court he got into fights, spit on a girl, got a dui etc. He may have won a title if he actually took care of his body or didnt have all the off the court issues. If I was Lebron I wouls ignore Barkley, he gets paid to say stupid stuff, he is no longer relevant, he is a joke . . . but I will admit he was the baddest 6″4 power forward ever, but that was the past and this is now.

I know for a fact that if charles had been in the same situation as LeBron he would have done the same thing. LeBron has soo much raw talent, to not have a ring yet is dissapointing. LeBron needs his Scottie Pippen, or two. With all due respect, those all time greats who say they would have stayed in Cleveland, please stop lying to yourselves.

    I can’t get with that.
I’m hyped for the next season. It has the potential to be epic. I mean, Bron, Wade and Bosh pissed off and balling hard on both ends has the potential to be outstanding basketball. The general hate, and how Bron handles it, is great for seeing his true mental toughness.
Then you have the sideplot of owners now contemplating changing the way free agency operates because players exercised their autonomy in a very powerful way, and well it’s compelling.
I want to see what happens on the court next year since several contenders got stronger, and we have Miami as a possible superteam. I want to see if Wade and Bron turn into Scottie and MJ Part Deaux.
I’m very excited for the season and it’s only August.

  • unrel

you guys are silly.. what’s the point of comparing bron and barkley’s career?.. and who cares about there stats.. and it was lame that someone said that chuck didn’t win anything so he has to shut his mouth.. last i checked.. none of us ever played in the league.. so we should all shut our mouths.. chuck said nothing about bron’s skillset.. just his actions.. simple as that.. even if you’re a bron fan.. and love his game.. you have to admit that some of his actions are on a ‘punk’ level.. i really don’t care what lebron does.. but you can’t be a twitter-thug to your own fans/followers.. get another one hour special and call out names like 2pac.. or do what other grown men do.. and don’t say anything at all..

  • Robb

you know LBJ really fcuked up when even CB criticizes him.

i’m with you Allenp.. i’m a laker fan.. but i’m excited to see how well the heat play together.. i have some hate towards it.. of course.. but overall.. this is a basketball fans dream.. i always wondered bird/magic together.. or jordan/magic.. etc.. we’ll see if it really works when you put established superstars together.. it’s different when the bulls had mj and scooped up a young pip and scottie developed into greatness under that system.. it’s always worked for me in video games.. let’s see the real life version..

  • kundai

Im very excited for this season everyone is going to see stars. and dont get me started on the postseason can i get a couple amens for basketball 2010-2011!

Sorry, but you know, Barkley is mostly right. The decision was a punk move. Leaving Cleveland was disappointing. If Lebron doesn’t win 2 or 3 championships, this move hurts his career
Charles is wrong though, about the Miami Heat live presentation. Any team would have done the exact same thing. And Barkley would CERTAINLY have done the same thing. Hypocrite alert indeed.

@Aznballa3: How do you know ‘for a fact’ that Barkley would have done the same thing? Did you forget that he had the opportunity to and decided to take his talens somewhere other than Chicago – where he could have teamed up with his best friend? When MJ left Chicago he could have went to a stacked team, but didn’t. Like he said, he wanted to beat the best, now join them. I don’t see any reason to doubt what Barkley, Magic or MJ have said. I was told, but have not seen an ‘official’ report that Oscar Robertson has also made comments that this would not have happened in his day. Obviously this is still a very small sample of all-time greats, but until I hear Larry, Bill R and Kareem each come out and say they would have done the same thing as LBJ, then I’m inclined to believe it was just different back then. Also note, this is not a criticism against LBJ who excercised his right under todays rules in a game that has evolved in the last sevral years. I’m just talking to your post about what you ‘know for a fact’ and the ‘due respect’ about the all time greats lying. I just want to know how you base this assertion, is because you would do what LBJ did, or do you have some solid reason for thinking they would all lie?

@the nupe i feel what your saying. Aside from barkley directly saying he’s a punk the guys liek jordan and magic hadnt really isluted lebron on his decision. they just put themselves in his shoes in a different time and generation and said it wouldnt have happend. But i have a question for everyone do you think nowadays winning a championship is advertised more as a team rising compaired to the Jordan, Magic, and Bird days where it was more advertised as the star carrying his team? Because i think the last of the star carryign a team type players will be the Kobes, Shaqs and you could say Duncan in a sense.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

The professional athlete of 2010 is in no way similar to those that played in the 50′s, 60′s, 70′s, 80′s and 90′s. This is what is lost in all of this…..these guys (probably close to 95%) of most modern athlete’s don’t have the same “makeup” the old school guys did. That applies to every sport, not just basketball. You ARE talking about BRANDS nowadays (whether, we, as fans) like that or not. It’s how it is. Guys like Deion Sanders, Michael Irvin, Joe Namath, Brian Bosworth, Magic Johnson, Reggie Jackson………. they were all self-promotion machines at their particular times in their prospective sports, but again, their’s were the slimmest minority, by no means the norm at those particular times.

  • hammer

@the nupe. The mentality of 2days players has changed. I remeber back n the 90′s growing up I don’t think it was even n the minds of the fans that players would form alliances. @ least not me,my homies or covos that I had w/other sports fans thought that way even after we witnessed the original dream team. Things done changed like biggie said

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

But they became well-known stars (and in each player I named beside Bosworth, became champions)because they self promoted themselves every chance they had. Sure there was no internet, 24 hour sport coverage back then, so it wasn’t an over-saturation like there has been for the last 5 years, but this is commonplace now, and will only continue to grow from here. 40 years ago, NO PLAYER in sports would have tried to be bigger than his organization, but now, like Bron, Bosh and Wade did, turned one organizations fortunes around with just a couple of signatures………..CHOSEN by those guys to make an unsolicited group decision to play WHERE THEY WANTED, as opposed to the “old” way of being held at the proverbial “gunpoint” to kow tow to an owners demands. Funny how sh*t changes.

i love chuck. funniest and most entertaining sports personality around. he’s hard on lebron because i had high expectations of him. but at the same time, lebron ain’t supposed to please chuck or his fans. he’s supposed to please himself. he needs to win to accomplish that. and win he will. chuck really has no right to talk cuzz he’s never won anything. if he can go back in time, knowing that he never won a championship, and was given the same opportunity that bron had this summer, i guarentee you chuck would make the same decision. some could say, lebron made his “decision” because he didn’t want a similar career as charles barkley. all the talent and potential in the world, but ringless.

  • Bballrehab

I agree with Chuck in that LeBron’s move of joining the Heat is gonna tarnish his legacy, because it seems, and rightly so, like he chose the easy way. But on the other hand, nobody is pointing the finger at guys like Kobe for being surrounded by Gasol, Bynum, Artest and Odom, 4 actual or potential all-stars…
I think people are being unfair with LeBron only because we, fans, have been expecting too much from him since day one.

  • Dre

I love Charles but he is stupid. He keeps talking about Lebron doing it by himself when no other player in the history has. Barkley ran to Houston and still couldn’t win one with the Dream. He already did what Lebron is doing. Lebron is going to make people eat there words. All of the people who claim they wouldn’t have done what Lebron is doing is lying… Mike included. If they were playing in a media market where no other real good players wanted to come they would have left to… their egos wouldn’t have allowed them to stay. Anybody who thinks different is smoking. Barkley is playing himself now he has done it before and he will do it again.

  • http://Staplesdesign.com Spaceship Jay

@ Jukai; I think it’s because they held Lebron to a much higher standard. Like I said ^^ he was/is being groomed to be the new ambassador of the NBA. So the move to Miami sort of messes up that whole “He persevered through the hardships and came out on top” story that so many were looking forward to

there is no easy or hard way. you win or you don’t, no gradation. but it’s HILARIOUS how the same people saying that he took the easy way… are the same people saying that Miami won’t sh–. how is it the easy way then?

  • http://Staplesdesign.com Spaceship Jay

@ Dre; I’ve been reading a lot of postings about Chuck running to Houston. But wasn’t he near middle-end of his career, much like The Celtics trio? He damn sure wasn’t the Super-Powered Barkley that he was with the Suns/76ers. With that being said, I hope Lebron doesn’t get all KG-ish when they start winning…. Cause that what it looks like were headed for.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Chuck tried to justify his own attempts to “team up” later in life by saying he was old, and on the downside of his career when he joined up with Pippen and the Dream.
The real problem was that when he was drafted and played with Dr. J and Moses Malone, he was too lazy and idiotic to make it work.
Then he got traded to Phoenix with KJ, and couldn’t get over the hump.
Finally he ran to Houston with the Dream but didn’t play the pick and roll properly and they lost on Stockton’s last second shot. And, he didn’t stay in shape and blew out his achilles and knee.
And then considered jumping on Jordan’s nuts to come back in Washington.
So, yeah, Charles doesn’t have much room to talk.

  • Yesse

    Sounds like the normal Chuck.

  • JTaylor21

@Jukai is right. Any true basketball fan would be head over heels happy that bron/wade/bosh are teaming up to play on the same team. It would be like watching 3/5ths of the olympic team all over again. Remember how people used to wake up real early in the morning or stay until the sun came out at night just for a chance at seeing the redeem team play. That’s the same kind of passion and commitment I’ll show when the season starts; I’ll stop whatever I’m doing; whether it’s plowing a skeezer, watching my son, or even partying with the homies just to watch these guys play. Anybody wouldn’t do the same is not a true ball fan or a laker/kobe fan. Cuz I know that no matter how much celtic fans hate the new heat, they’ll will watch them because they’re true b-ball fans (I think).

  • JTaylor21

@TMoney, thank you bra. That’s the same sh*t I’ve been talking since he signed with MIA. People keep claim that he took the easy way out but turnaround and claim that the heat won’t win sh*t. Which one is it. Anybody who has played ball knows that no matter how much talent a team ur on has, it’s still gonna take hard work and determination just to win. There’s NOTHING easy about winning.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

Again… This is more about Lebron than anything else. What fool said there not gonna win? I can see someone saying that outta blind hate, but you’d have to have little to absolutley NO basketball intelligence to not know that there a LOCK to win a ‘chip next year, if not this one. I’m sure that’s why people consider The Heat to be the new villans of the NBA in the first place.

  • bakers’ dozen (12-13)

    GO… HEAT!!!

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

O.k., The Heat are NOT a lock to win it all next year – the Lakers match up pretty well. However I would not bet against the Heat either. It’s almost certain they will win in the next 1-3 years, and even once LeBron has a ring or two, his naysayers will be able to ‘prove’ their point that LeBron took the ‘easy way out’. As a fan, I’ll be watching the Heat every chance I get, beacuse it will be great, possiblty historic basketball. However having a few good teams in the League (compounded in CP3 and Melo go to NYC), is not necessarily good for the League. Yes, we’ll talk about the great teams more, but who’s going to be watching all the ‘other’ teams? Even if you contract the league by 2-4 teams, there still aren’t enough stars to go around to keep parity and/or interest across the league. If 3/4 of the teams lose money, how can the league be considered healthy? LBJ/Bosh/Wade and all the other FA excercised their right and chose. That’s a sign that times have changed. Not sure its a good change for the league, but it’s GREAT for the Heat and Heat fans. Just don’t know how long the league can sustain this, and in the long run may hurt the NBA and make things worse for NBA fans across the US and Canada.

i don’t get why people just can’t come to grips that lebron is basically an egotistical punk. he was praised his whole life (and deserved it), so that’s how he’s going to be. you don’t change that. he didn’t have the right guidance growing up to tell him to be real humble and take responsibility. he’s the best basketball player and supremely talented, but that doesn’t mean he has a perfect personality too! Just let him be. he’s not a god or anything.

  • JTaylor21

@Jukai, I’ve met and known countless laker/kobe fans and there’s only one or two that have even said anything remotely good about bron. I don’t have the exact stats and but from my experiences it’s a very high percentage of anti-lebron laker fans.

I hope there are many alternate universes where LeBron stayed in Cleveland, went to NYK, went to the Nets, the Bulls and so on… and in each of those he is equally criticised for his decision… Oh yeah he’s loyal, but he’s stupid, cleveland didn’t get any better, and they have no cap room or tradeable assets to get better. NYK? oh what a greedy bastard he just wants the attention that NY will give him, and so he doesn’t have to play D with D’antoni’s system. Nets? Oh he’s just doing it because he’s on Jay Z’s nuts, they’re too young to be a championship squad and still need to add a few players, he won’t win. The Bulls? Good fit, but now he’ll NEVER get out of Jordan’s shadow. You see it was a lose lose lose lose situation. Miami was the least of all evils, at least he’ll win.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2010/08/charles-barkley-on-lebron-james-punk-moves/ Adam NZ

I don’t hope he’s criticised for criticisms sake, just to justify his decision to go to Miami. In all places he’s hated by somebody for his decision, but at least he’ll be happy in Miami, and isn’t that the most important thing of all?

this reasoning just ticks me off, these guys were drafted, they started young and got paired with dominant bigs, they flourished together and dominated some more when the bigs left. same goes for Duncan, Pippen, and even Wade that one year.

again, it’s not that they teamed up, it’s how they did it and what part of their careers.

____BOTTOM LINE IS____ THE KNICKS WILL BE BETTER THAN THE HEAT BECAUSE THEY’RE A LOCK TO GET AN ELITE POINT GUARD IN THE NEAR FUTURE… THE HEAT HAVE NO PAYROLL FOR SUCH A PLAYER SO THEY ARE STUCK WIT SUB-PAR PGs AND FUTURE DRAFT PICKS WHO ARENT GONNA BE THAT SOLID BECAUSE THE HEAT WILL HAVE OVER 50 WINS EVERY SEASON, SO THEY’LL ALWAYS DRAFT LIKE 28TH… NOT TO MENTION THE HEAT HAD TO GIVE UP 2 FIRST ROUNDERS AS WELL… SO WHILE ‘BRON WADE AND BOSH ARE GOOD MAYBE EVEN GREAT TOGETHER… THE CEILING FOR POTENTIAL GROWTH IN THE FUTURE I MUST SAY ISNT VERY HIGH OUTSIDE OF THERE PERSONAL TALENTS…

Charles is right and wrong. He is right on how Lebron James handle his business as a professional. Lebron was given a opportunity to make millions. Letting your former employer know before telling the nation was incorrect. Dancing on stage was not because they were celebrating the beginning of a new era. Only time will say where Lebron James will be in the future. Just to note Charles did get with other Rockets at the end of his career and well after his prime. Lebron James at this point in his career admitted he can’t do it alone. That was obvious with the decline in playoff wins over the years in Cleveland. It was time to move on.

some charity benefited from the money as a result of the decision.so if u have heart for disadvantaged pple u would appreciate what lebron did…rather than what he didnt do.

    hahaha…it’s haters galore for LeBron.

  • ballin

barkley was lazy and performed well under pressure. lebron is a workaholic and performs well not under pressure.

barkley screwed around happy with a fat check while lebron is serious business going for what money cant buy (because he got an obese check).

Charles is always critical about Lebron because “probably” there’s a little bit on envy involved …
Too bad Chuck you’re too old for this …

  • Ron

Sir Chuck is an entertainer, don’t be too serious on his views, while he’s probably not serious neither. Surely he knows what “The King” is capable of, but Chuck’s just doing his job to stir things up.

Chuck is right. What he did to his hometown team was a punk move. That’s why D Rose didn’t want him there in Chicago. Man, reigning Mvp’s don’t join other folks teams. Lebron is a great player but something is lacking in the old ticker. but anyway, If the heat are going to win it, they better do it now, because Chicago and OKC are not going anywere soon.

What makes you think he cares what you have published. Your comments have been valued in my book, but when you come to “punk” remarks about LBJ…I don’t like..Whatever he did, it is over. He knows it should have been done differently but too late, enough already. Look at what he has had to deal with since…could you stand that kind of pressure and still be an excellent athlete..Let everyone play the game and who plays the best, wins.

This is just petty hate from a guy who never exceeded his limitations as a player. If Lebron retires without a ring after 15 seasons
