Doc Rivers: ‘[Lakers] Still Have Not Beaten Our Starting Five’

Doc kept harping on this fact to motivate his troops during last season’s NBA Finals. He’s still doing it, as SRI transcribes: “Number one you gotta congratulate them because they won. They still have not beaten our starting five. Our starting five against the Lakers starting five has a ring. Tell him don’t forget that. We will be back strong and Perk (Kendrick Perkins) will be there next year if there’s a game seven.”

if the celtics had perkins.. if lakers had bynum.. if the celtics and red.. lakers had chick hearn.. celtics had the bird.. lakers had magic.. celtics had white fans.. lakers had celebs.. i can do this all day.. lakers lost in 08.. and just won back to back.. doc.. encourage the team to win tomorrow.. instead of giving your squad an excuse to why they lost yesterday..

  • B.C.

Doc get over it realize it you guys lost, point, blank, period!

  • Sean B

@ MusketeerX: do you actually think before you type? “If Perkins is in game 7, Lakers have their butts handed to them”…that statement has no foundation.
Perkins through the first five games of the finals averaged 7 ppg and 6.8 rpg. In game 7 Rasheed had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Do you really think Perkins would have done any better than that?
The fact of the matter is, the Lakers won and the Celtics should stop copping out behind excuses they would have berated the Lakers had they made them in 2008 (Bynum/Ariza).

  • Robb

2008 they won because Bynum and Ariza didn’t play, 2010 they lost with Kobe hurt and Bynum playing at 50%. Without injuries and the new additions the Celtics have no chance. Tell them not to forget that Doc.

  • MVPballer

It’s not about stats with Perkins, and if you think it is, you should just stop posting here. Perkins doesn’t put up big numbers, but his presence in the paint and his low post d is off the charts. Outside of D12 I’d say he’s the best post defender in the L.
You can’t just look at the stats.

  • MVPballer

Not saying they would’ve won it with Perk healthy though.

No one can truthfully and knowingly say they woulda won game 7 with Perkins. Coulda woulda shoulda, DON’T make assumptions. It’s funny how that’s been a big excuse for losing the finals. I thought the Celtics had that whole “teamwork” thing going and that one guy didn’t make or break the whole team. I guess that doesn’t count when they lose. What is really funny to me is all the excuses the Celtics and their fans make to justify their loss. When the Lakers lost in the finals, did they make excuses? No, they took the loss as a lesson and kept their heads up, winning the next 2 championships. That’s what makes them true champions. Celtics won’t even be in the finals again in the next 3 years, book it. I bet their next excuse will be, “Well if we hadn’t signed Shaq….”

Truthfully, if perkins were playing the lakers would have lost the game. i think everyone should know that by now. HOWEVER, if bynum and ariza were 100 percent going into the 1st bout in 08 who knows… maybe lakers force a game 7 on their homefloor and don’t give up a 24 pt lead due to having 2 healthy big men manning the paint. Hell maybe the cavs should have traded jj hickson for stoudamire instead of having jamison get owned by old man garnett in the playoffs… what im trying to say is that “What Ifs” don’t matter because at the end of the day they are not reality. What happened happened. What ifs may be probable at the time but at the end of the day we know what happened. we aren’t predicting the future, we are trying to change the past. can’t do that as it already happened and is DONE WITH. I caught my self with the “what if” problem talking about the lakers kings game 6 02 WCF. i then stopped bc its done with and hopefully in the future nothing like that happens again. thats my take on it.

Doc is a sore LOSER like his team full of OLD DOGS. Lakers lost in 2008 when Bynum and Ariza was out. Did the Lakers make excuses. NOOOO, Lakers came back and won back 2 back titles. I honestly feel that if the Lakers had a healthy Ariza and Bynum at 75% they win. But it doesn’t matter now. Lakers WILL 3 peat then Doc, can retire and watch his kids play sports. Doc ego has gotten inflated with that ONE RING. BOOK IT!!!

  • Tyler

As far as im concerned he’s right in a sense cuz with a healthy Perk they would have competed on the boards but u can make the same case for the Lakers in 2008. In the end these are two great teams and I see another rematch next season with it going to 7 hopefully Lakers win again.

  • Tyler

Oh yeah and for people saying the Lakers didn’t make excuses after their loss in 2008 I live in L.A and everyone was saying how if they had Bynum and Ariza blah blah blah so both teams should shut the hell up and play basketball. BOOK THAT!!!

  • http://slamonline.com J Dizzle

Of course the majority of people who live there said that Tyler. I’m talking real bball fans and talking heads.

  • http://slamonline.com J Dizzle

Of course the casual hometown fans will claim that Tyler. But on most discussions you heard a lot more talk about Perk than there was about Bynum and definitely more than Ariza.

  • roman

He’s still talkin this ish… Come on doc, its been 3 months, get ready for Shaq and the rest of the expendables.

  • Sean B

Thanks mvpballer, i guess ill take your advice and not post her anymore. Actually, you can’t have it both ways. I never said Perkins wasn’t a valuable role player, nor did I argue against his defensive merits.
And frankly, you actually make my point more clear: Perkins is helpful with defense and rebounding. Well, in game 7, Rasheed did an excellent job on the LA bigs (holding them under 40% fg) and also added 8 rbs, which is par for the course with Perkins. Basically, Wallace provided exactly what Perkins would have provided.
Perhaps “you should just stop posting here”

  • http://slamonline.com J Dizzle

and with Wallace struggling the rest of the series he pretty much did take Perks place that game. Good point Sean.

  • Sean B

    Thank you J Dizzle!

  • Tyler

    @J Dizzle
I agree that a lot of bball heads including yourself myself know that Perk was brought up more than Bynum and Ariza good point.

  • Tyler

    @Sean
I agree with what your saying cuz Wallace not only played good defense on the L.A bigs he also provided scoring and stretched the defense with his 3 point shooting.

  • Anton the Conqueror

@ Hurricane – You forgot to say that everyone wearing either a Lakers jersey or a Dodgers cap or a Raiders, or Rams (oh woops they bailed a long time ago!) is a STINKIN LOSER. WARRIORS AND GIANTS BABY!!

  • BostonBaller

blah blah blah..blah blah blah blah, come on folks don’t get your panties in a bunch over it. If you know anything about ball you know a coach uses EVERYTHING. All coaches do it but when it’s the coach of your fav team you call it motivation not complaining. Put on your big boy under roos and take a breathe. As someone above stated, it’s no different than Jax talking about the Spurs…Doc and the team accepted the loss but there is a time for everything so hush lil’ ones and enjoy the upcoming season. PS Wallace played great but w/ the extra minutes his body could not sustain it and neither could KG, hence the missing of Perk. No excuses for the loss just prep work for the future…

  • BostonBaller

It seems as this is just like most things…an interviewer asks “the right” questions to get a person to say what they know they will say and voila..fuel for a fake fire. lol. You have to take into account that he was answering ?’s from a well known Laker fan (Doc Walker) so I’m sure they were talking smack back in forth (in fun) Articles don’t always bring forth the perspective or context during 2nd hand journalism pieces b/c it takes away the pop factor. I was more interested in his answer about The Lakers counting championships from another city.

  • http://Www.dimemag.com B-More Mike

I’m a laker fan, Doc better be worried about Miami & Orlando? Numerous people written the obvious about the missing players but we needed A$$ whopping the C’s put on us, made us stronger. Without that beating I would have no confidence we could beat them or the heat. But he better be worried about Miami, screw the motivational speeches these are grown men they know what’s at stake. Better be worried how to get Paul Pierce off against LBJ, he be shutting his a$$ down!!

  • total scrotal implosion

Bostonballer, ive always thought it cheap for lakers to count minny/mikan titles

  • BostonBaller

total s, I’m iffy on the whole thing but I know why it’s done..the NBA has to have rich history and it sounds better when you say two teams with x amount of chips are squaring off. lol. If OKC starts winning chips they’ll count Seattle’s as well. lol. Once you relocate you relocate, point blank. I’m not mad at them though, it is what it is.

  • drew

Excuses excuses. The lakers beat the celtics without THEIR starting five also because bynum was injured. Kobe had injuries as well.

  • http://juanm.garcia@comcast.net Flashback

I find it cheap for any team to count championships when there were only 8 teams in the NBA.

  • http://Slamonline.com Negativekreep

T.S.I: I’ve heard many argue that point, And I could understand where you’re coming from IF they had Become a new franchise. But they Didnt, they remained the “Lakers” wich is why I think OKC is a bad comparison, since they are no longer the “Sonics”. Baylor and west both played in Minny and LA, where they continued the tradition they inherited in Minny from the Mikan era. West eventually bringing home another banner to LA. So the West Baylor era bridged the gap between the two citys and continued the championship tradition as well as the legacy of having the greatest big man in the game, the greater mikan, Wilt. A Legacy they’ve always contined to maintain. To this day, When you hear Lakers you think great players, and dynastys. So if the Los Angeles Lakers only built on what Mikan started in Minny why wouldn’t the Minny banners count?

  • http://Slamonline.com Negativekreep

Flashback: Good point. But history is history, We don’t know where were going until we understand where we came from. When it Comes to a teams greatness isn’t it all about traditon? Look at any sport, Baseball: the Yankees, Dodgers, Redsocks. Football: Greenbay, the Steelers, Colts, Cowboys ect. Soccer: Brazil. Hockey: Detroit. Many of these teams are considerd great not just because of thier current status but because of thier tradition, wich is often carried over from one place to another. It’s history it’s tradition, not cheap.

rivers is a cry baby. bynum is mr. limp, kobe has a brokin finger, fisher is old, the bench is an x factor, artest has to put up with looking at paul pierce’s face and pau is trying to keep awake by his yawning screams after a big play.
