Four-Team, Five-Player Trade Official

by Ryne Nelson

The early rumors were correct: Trade winds are officially blowing in the NBA this week. Here’s how the blockbuster deal breaks down:

• Darren Collison and James Posey to the Pacers
• Troy Murphy to the Nets
• Trevor Ariza to the Hornets
• Courtney Lee to the Rockets

Collison will likely start for the Pacers. Murphy will likely do little but limit the development of rookie Derrick Favors in Jersey (what have the Nets done this summer?). Ariza gives the Hornets financial flexibility and a starter at SF who Chris Paul should be happy with. Lee saves the Rockets money this season and re-opens the starting SF spot for no-stat all-star Shane Battier. Posey’s contract expires in two years.

love this move for the pacers

  • Jelte

I wonder is Ariza is still happy he left LA. Good move for the Pacers, who now will finally have a strong PG.

Not sure Houston gets any better with this deal. Kevin Martin’s going to become the next big contract they’ll give away for cheap.

pacers finally get a good point guard.. but man i wish NO could have held on to him the sky is the limit for that kid.. pacers might just make the playoffs this year.. been a long time since i could actually respect a move larry bird made.. but as far as the other teams this is a very un-intelligent move.. NO, houston, and nj will all regret their decisions

  • bnets

    Lets Go Nets!!!

  • http://aol.com Run’N'Gun219

I GUESS THE ALL WHITE TEAM WASNT WORKING FOR BIRD SO I GUESS HE HAD TO GET SOME “BROTHERS IN THERE” AND DONT SAY “THEY HAD DANNY GRANGER” CUZ I LIVE IN INDY AND DANNY ANT NO BROTHER IF U GET WHAT IM SAYING

  • http://www.EuroleagueAdventures.com Nick Gibson

This is the first time I’ve questioned Daryl Morey in a long while. I guess this is what you get for bringing in Brad Miller’s $12M in 2011. Ariza’s due to make half that.

Bad for Houston and New Orleans. Great for Indiana and New jersey. Troy Murphy gives the Nets someone who can Compliment Brook Lopez and the move created space for SKY is the limit talent Terrance Williams to start. New Jersey Will not regret their decision @ C_Cantrell. Sorry sir.

Does this move really make sense for anyone but the Pacers?

  • Sparker

are you the dude who burned down reggie’s house?

  • http://slamonline.com GotHandles?

F*ing steal and a half for the pacers. Collison could end up being the best PG out of last year’s class.

  • Overtime

This works for no-one but Indiana, who really did get away with one. Yes, saves Houston some money, but does mean that for any games that Yao isnt in all defenders will be focused on Martin now.
And in a little while, the Hornets will have nothing

Pacers and Nets win. NO is not bad, but nothing special either. Houston, is still leaving my head scratching…

  • Robb

    The Pacers win. Good job.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

I’m happy for the Nets, Murphy is a perfect fit.

  • Overtime

As I said in other post, this smells alot like teams doing something for the sake of doing something

  • chris

what do you mean what have the nets done?? they on the come up

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Chris Paul ran off Darren Collison…lol

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Makes sense for the Nets too. Murphy hits the glass, his contract is expiring, and he rebounds. Doesn’t defend, but hey.

  • Jason

Posey was a horrendous contract, and still is. Trading your backup PG to obtain a quality starting SF is a smart move, and if you throw in New Orleans dumping its worst current contract (at least Okafor produces something), that’s a great move. It’s only a bad deal for New Orleans if Chris Paul leaves.

  • http://google c_cantrell

the nets have severly damaged and slowed the development of derrick favors.. for what? trop murphy? really man, really?

  • tom

ouch for houston. with yao back, they give away too much. nice add for the other teams though.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Nets quietly continuing to stack….great pick up for the Hornets btw, should make CP3 very happy

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

just me or are the Pacers getting blacker and blacker….LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • http://slamonline.com/ Ryne Nelson

^ OK? … Start Lance at the 2, and this team could be very nice in a year or two.

  • Franko

    Wow what a move…

  • http://google c_cantrell

uhh, bud i really doubt this will overly excite cp3

  • http://google c_cantrell

yeah what a move lol larry bird is finally givin up on an all white team haha!

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

@c_cantrell: the reason the Nets made this deal is because they wanted a power forward who’s capable of starting, so they can gradually bring Derrick Favors along. Keep in mind that Favors is the youngest player in the League, and they don’t want to put too much pressure on him right from the start. They hope he’ll eventually start at some point in the season, and if that’s the case, they’ll try to trade Murphy (maybe along with Quinten Ross) since his contract expires after this season. So it’s a win-win for the Nets: if Favors takes a bit longer to develop than the team expects from him, they have a power forward in Murphy who’s capable of putting up double-doubles at a nightly basis and can shoot the 3. If Favors is ready to start, Murphy’s contract will be very interesting for future trade partners. If this doesn’t convince you that it’s the right move, I don’t know what else I can say.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Indi and NO are def better from this trade, not sure how it will play out in Hou or NJ though.

  • Drew

So what do the Hornets do now if CP3 tries to force a trade?

  • http://Www.dimemag.com Royal

Not to be a hater but…. I believe Collision may be getting hyped up a little bit too much (Kinda like how Ramon Sessions was getting hyped when he was with the Bucks)

  • total scrotal implosion

Nupe has now officially been assigned to the short bus, cantrel too. Great move for indy and nj. Good for houston too, battier plays more and they save money. No? Haha chris is leaving!

  • kudos

Collison is a beast when given a chance. i have no doubt that Chris Paul had something to do with it, i guess he’s scared of some competition?

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

so… Chris Paul isn’t going to NY?

  • kudos

ps. Paul is great on offense no doubt, but his defense SUCKS…

  • hoodsnake

I think this was just living up to CP3s demands of making the team better and although the Pacers got away with daylight robbery it kinda takes away all the leverage they had for next season’s free agent crop

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Chris Paul’s defense sucks but he’s lead the league in steals twice…yeah

  • Cool Dude

So Ariza is the solution and instantly puts Hornets over the top so that CP3 will stay?

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/Uncle05Sam Earl

Ariza, the L.A. Prodigal Son. :(

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

New Orleans did this to create room to re-sign Sean Marks.

  • Shem

Pacers win big on this deal. Not sure what Houston was thinking considering they basically traded Ariza for Lee. It can be arguable on the Rockets end if they didn’t have Kevin Martin already being there. This is also a great move for the Nets. Terrence Williams now starts, and Yi gets to sit his ass down on the bench. Now the Nets need to trade Harris for a sf!

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@c_cantrell didn’t say it would overexcite him, but getting done with Darren Collison and adding a guy like Trevor Ariza and the offensive and defensive versatility he brings is a great addition for any team. And a guy like Chris Paul who has the mindset that he can make any player better would be very encouraged by the season he had in Houston

  • http://www.stonesthrow.com Michael NZ

Ariza shot a robust 39% last season.

  • BK Chris

NO is gonna regret this move when CP3 bolts and they have no pg! Y get rid of collison? Are they sure CP3″s knees can hold up for a full season? Atleast hey got rid of james posey!

  • cmc

    dookey turd

  • Brahsef

    What a boring trade.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@BKChris Collison will be a star in this league no doubt, I’m guessing this is mostly to appease Chris Paul…The Trevor Ariza move is a step in the right direction….but your right, I think ever since Byron Scott was fired he’s been playing half-hearted…with the right pieces Monty can steer him back towards the organization

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

Shem: Yi has been traded to the Bucks in June. And although I hope that Terrence Williams starts, don’t be surprised if it’s Morrow who will actually start.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

Whoops, Yi was not traded to the Bucks. He was traded to the Wizards (I was thinking about CDR for a moment)
