It Will Cost More To Watch Good Teams Play

At least in New Orleans. This from Nola.com: “Variable ticket-pricing has been growing in popularity throughout professional sports, and New Orleans Hornets vice president of marketing Matt Biggers considered the timing right for New Orleans’ NBA franchise to embrace the trend. Biggers had observed more than half of the NBA teams offer variable prices, and said ‘it’s hard to even find a baseball team that’s not doing it.’ To him, the opportunity was now. On Tuesday, the Hornets announced the introduction of variable pricing for the 2010-11 season to better reflect each game’s worth. Yet-to-be-determined prices will be assigned to games based on value and demand, influenced by factors such as an opponent’s quality and the day of the week the game is played. Each game will fall into one of five pricing categories: marquee, premium, classic, value and preseason. ‘The concept is recognizing the fact that not all games are created equal,’ Biggers said. ‘We play games on all different days of the week, against all different kinds of opponents during different times of the year. There are games where the demand isn’t as high as other games. For us, it’s about pricing more in line with what the demand is. For games that have high demand, we can price those appropriately.’”

I’m starting a new NBA news-related website, anybody interested in being a potential blogger call me at 612-803-7432 my name is AJ. Thanks and I hope to get a few calls. Pleae do not hesitate to call with questions or concerns.

  • LS

The Rockets started doing this within the last couple years and while it may make sense from a business standpoint, it has drastically affected my ticket buying habits!

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

It if don’t make dollars then it don’t make sense. Seriously though, watching the Lakers, Heat, Celtics, and Warriors should cost more than for the T-Wolves, Cavaliers, and Kings.

  • 2dope

Did you really put the Warriors in with that Group? Right now, I’d pay more money to watch the Kings play.

  • 23-DOOM-50

I’d pay more to see the Wolves… the Warriors are garbage

It makes sense, I agree that “not all games are created equal”. However, This practice makes it even more difficult for kids to see their favorit players live. Many kids really want to see Kobe, LBJ, even Shaq still has a large following, and these games will be among the most expensive and prohibit some families from being able to afford to go. I guess to give the entire family the ‘NBA experience’ they’ll have to watch Cavs-v-Pacers on a Tuesday night. How exciting will that be – unless of course they give away free bobble-heads and tacos.

^^^It’s not just the kids who want to see their favorite players live you know…!

  • peter

rather than charging more for the good games, the bad games should just be cheaper…

  • javy

Will they give you a 50% credit when Lebron decides to rest because they clinched the playoffs like they did last season. I’m sure they didn’t mention that did they?
How about when Lebron decides to quit on the 4th qtr, can we get free tacos?…..
That’s why I like to go watch the lakers because I know Kobe will play his a****ss out every night!

  • http://onemoreandigottago.blogspot.com Zak_Knutson13

Are you really trying to turn this into a Kobe v. Lebron debate?

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

This is actually a great idea. Maybe we can watch Kobe shoot 30% again but have his teammates bail him out and Kobe take all the credit because he grabbed rebounds after freethrows?

  • Coney Islander

mogodude22@yahoo.com I’m gonna shoot you an email in a few.

  • http://Www.dimemag.com Royal

Jukai: I don’t remember Kobe taking credit for the win in game seven……(maybe his dickriding fans give him too much credit) but Kobe for the most part seemed
thankful that his team stepped up when he was shooting badly.

  • total scrotal implosion

Cant wait to watch raptors vs lwolves

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

    @2dope and 23-DOOM-50, I’m a Dubs fan. =P

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Royal: yer right, I was just trying to rile up Javy

  • javy

Well when you have a messed up finger and knee and you have a bad shooting game but I know you gave it your best and you still lose, heck I would watch every night!!!
When you win but you bend your knees!!!Only if I get the tickets for free because I love the preview show of the powder in the air and then the mimic of taking pictures with your teammates and all that stuff…THAT IS ALWAYS FUN!

  • Brian

If this is their policy then all the Hornets games should be cheap.

  • Nick the Quick

Here we go again. Surprising that this has devolved into a Kobe-Lebron debate.

  • dimo

why pay for any game? arent they already making commercials?
i watch it for free anyways but i’m just curious.

  • SLaidlaw

So will games against the Raps, Cavs, and T-Wolves fall under the preseason category or will they be opening a 6th category: D-League?

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

    dimo: c’mon bro….

  • JTaylor21

@Javy nothing but excuses for your estranged lover. You sound like one of his on the side mistresses. Why do people act like kobe’s all of a sudden everything that’s right and good with the world today. You kobe flunkies talk about the man like he’s the male version of Mother Theresa, damn.

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com/ ClutchPerformer

    co-sign JTaylor21
when hes down apparently its cuz his injuries but when he wins all of a sudden hes the second coming of Jesus. its true his nut huggers boost him too much, iight man did work cant deny but when he gets bailed out by his team they wanna boost like he did it all.
Its like when you shoot an air ball but by a stroke of luck your teammate is there and catches and converts it into a pass of an open lay/J/or dunk/alley and shout it was a pass I swear

  • Harrell

So now that we got this settled this 24, 23 debate back to the games the hornets have no right to judge any teams worth what have they won, chris paul and he wants out but i feel for new orleans they never catch a break.(katrina,BP, next CP3.)

  • imax

kobe himself didnt accept the credit, but he returned it to the spaniard. he’s already a matured player and believes in teamwork. kobe admits that he’s not young anymore. that he cant do the things he could do before.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

will THEY pay me to watch New Orleans play Toronto????

  • Frank

    Well

By the end of next year, they will have to auction off games like cavs vs raptors. And after the fans watch their home team get clobbered by the new and future superteams. The tickets won’t sell on ebay. And if they do at a great discount. Thousands of seats will be empty in the bottom bowl of the arena, where the corporations sit. They won’t be able to give away tickets. But you guys keep writing about teams unis changing why the league is headed for trouble.

Just wait til the stars in non-destination cities start getting smacked around mercilessly, won’t they be happy campers. So many of you are so blind, ignorant or a fans of a superteam that you are just going to sit idily by and watch the train wreck.

The NBA better start opening franchises one in each nation, so the NBA will have teams to play against, cause at this rate 20 teams will not be able to get fans support in minimum of 5 years.

But, hey its all good now right?

    Regards

we should drunk dial this moo goo guy pan guy for spamming all over slam

  • YeahRight

So all Hornets games fall into the “value” category?

  • http://slamonline.com Dave.

Is this based on projected wins, or as the season progresses?
So if we get in now, the Nets games should be about $3 a ticket, but when they start their late-season run to twenty wins they may pass $7?

After carrying the inconsistent Lakers all year and destroying his body in doing so, I’m sure they could return the favour ONCE to Bryant.

    Unbelievable, some of you…
