Larry Johnson Wants to Be an Assistant Coach

The Bulls should hire him, if only for the possibility that he’ll randomly throw up the “LJ” sign during games. From the Daily Herald: “A familiar name has surfaced in the Bulls’ search for a new assistant coach. Larry Johnson, the former No. 1 overall draft pick, is interested in the job and visited the team recently. Johnson has a history with new Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau. Johnson played for the New York Knicks from 1996-2001, while Thibodeau was on the coaching staff working under Jeff Van Gundy. Since retiring in 2001, Johnson has not held any formal coaching jobs.”

would love to see that sign one more time!

  • DMC14

Didn’t he want to stay out of the limelight?

  • ld

The last thing I remember hearing about LJ was that he and Anthony Mason were being acused (not convicted or charged if my memory is right) of messing with a 15 year old girl. Maybe he ‘rightfully’ got out of the limelight to let that story die down. But it seems odd to just pop up 9 years later and want to be an assistant coach. Maybe he’s been scouting or coaching in Europe or a Div 2/3 team? Not all former players make good coaches and although he was good, he never came off to me as a player with high basketball I/Q that just seemed like coaching material. But I guess we’ll see.

    Hire Terry Porter instead

  • The Philosopher

I could be wrong, but I think he was coaching at a Texas high school for a while.

But LJ as a player was the man! Though he and Zo both need to take boxing lessons. Dayum, I remember thinking “they let them go at it for a good 30 seconds and neither one landed a haymaker?!” I seriously thought at the time that maybe the fight was staged to generate excitement since ratings for the NBA were down that year, lol.

story says he has no coaching experience.

  • The Philosopher

    Yeah, it did.
    My bad.

  • total scrotal implosion

MARK JACKSON, u payn attn?!. He wants to be an asst coach, not just assume he can land a head coaching gig right away

  • http://google c_cantrell

    give the dude a shot

  • Scottie Pimpin’

yeah give him a shot, but only for min wage, im talking 7.25 an hour.

  • Straight Shooter

Difference is Mark Jackson is a name and can get him a coaching gig if he takes a not so ideal situation..LJ has been chillin for the last 9 years but if they let him wear the Grandmama outfit during games I’m all for it…..and if I hear one more person say something about Fundementals or high basketball I/Q…half of the people that say this don’t know what it is themselves.

“he never came off to me as a player with high basketball I/Q”
I can only assume you don’t know how to play basketball or never watched him play. Amazing comment.

  • MikeC.

LJ had a very high basketball IQ. For a player anyway. That doesn’t always translate into coaching. After he hurt his back, he completely transformed his game from Amare-style run and dunk to a low-post threat and excellent 3 point shooter. Great positional defender and passer too. Awesome beard.

  • Clos1881

@dmc14 being an assistant coach is far from the spotlight.
