Report: JR Smith Choked Someone During Pickup Game

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

J.R. Smith added some drama and intrigue to his pickup game a couple of weeks ago, by reportedly busting out his best Latrell Sprewell and Wayne Brady impressions.

According to the Denver PD, Smith was involved in some type of altercation at the Nuggets’ practice facility on August 13th, when he apparently got tired of guys he was playing with getting a little too physical with him.

So, naturally, J.R. tried to choke one of them.

FanHouse has the report:

“We were called to that location about an incident possibly involving Mr. Smith,” said Detective John White of the Denver Police Department. “When we got there, the officers conducted their investigation. It did involve Mr. Smith.” According to White, the player — who sources said lives in the Denver area and played previously with the now defunct Colorado 14ers of the NBA D-League — is “not a member of the National Basketball Association.”

According to a league source who spoke with one of the people in the gym, numerous players were taking part in drills when members of the Nuggets’ coaching staff told the player who later called police to be physical with Smith.

“They were just wanting the guy to be physical with J.R., telling the other guys, ‘Hey, body up on the guys and really make them work,’” the source said. “J.R. just lost it. He tried to choke the kid, and the kid called the cops.”

Luckily for J.R. Smith, no charges have been filed.

However, this is not a good look for someone who is already on the trading block.

We need a new category on the site: Instead of “News & Rumors,” this story should be posted under “Of Course This Happened.”

  • tavoris Posted: Aug.26 at 9:26 am
co-sign Ryan. not surprised one bit. But then again, he DID play with Allen Iverson at one point in his career (sarcasm). Or maybe Chauncey Billups wasn’t around to mitigate the incident.

This is just living up to reputation, v clever J.R

  • Gerard Himself Posted: Aug.26 at 9:34 am
One day I’m reading an article by Lang where he and Smith talk golf, next day I’m reading this sh*t. Why can’t Smith just stay out of the news? He’s been in the League long enough to finally act a bit more mature, he can’t let this stuff happening to him anymore.

  • LDR4 Posted: Aug.26 at 9:37 am
Geez, I though Sprewell retired because no one offered him enough money to feed his kids. Looks like his legacy has remained and is going strong though. This will certainly hurt Denver’s attempt to use him as trade bait.

C’mon, he was just showing the kid where to get a new tattoo.

  • RIGGS Posted: Aug.26 at 9:41 am
did carmelo run into the gym yelling stop snitchin?

  • RIGGS Posted: Aug.26 at 9:43 am
@Gerard: theres a LOT of guys around my way that still act this way and theyre older than i am. It’s a mentality of entitlement that is usually blamed on not having a father figure when growing up. it’s sad really if they were to see themselves on tape i wonder how they would react to it.

JR Smith uses strangling exercises to improve his hands for his short game.

  • Darksaber Posted: Aug.26 at 10:40 am
Surpriiiise!! Wait, that can’t be right. Nevermind.

  • logues Posted: Aug.26 at 10:43 am

    Damn,
I was wondering if I was the only one who watched Juice last night.

  • Javy Posted: Aug.26 at 10:54 am
I wonder what happens when the coaching staff leaves the whole Denver team alone unatended!!
KMart-”So what tatto r u getting tonight JR?”
    JR-”Some lips on my a****sss”
    KMart-”Come here little P***unk, I’ll beat u up”
    JR-”Carmelo where is my gun?”
Carmelo-”Nene, hide the w*****eed, I have to go home and get something”

  • IAMORANGE4EVER Posted: Aug.26 at 11:08 am

J.R. is an idiot. But by damn can he shoot the rock. Send em to the bulls Denver.

  • Allenp Posted: Aug.26 at 11:46 am
JR Smith grew up in a two parent suburban household.
Don’t the let the tats and attitude fool you.
He’s spoiled, and entitled, but it’s not because of typical stereotypes about black NBA players.
He’s just your typical suburban American.

  • Shem Posted: Aug.26 at 11:49 am
No team will want him but the Clippers, and I’d rather get choked then play for the Clippers

  • Kevin Posted: Aug.26 at 11:50 am
    LMAO

  • Sparker Posted: Aug.26 at 12:52 pm
allenp: and i just thought you were going to write “thug” and let us figure it out. well played once again, sir

  • Enigmatic Posted: Aug.26 at 1:17 pm
Why the hell would the Bulls want him? They had him a few years back and shipped his ass out without ever playing a game.

  • unrel Posted: Aug.26 at 1:41 pm
if i wasn’t so lazy right now.. i’d just copy and paste my previous comments.. dude is a head case and immature..

  • unrel Posted: Aug.26 at 1:42 pm
by the way.. it wasn’t even a real pick up game.. they were running drills.. dude will be out the league faster than you can say ‘young money’

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Aug.26 at 1:51 pm
Latrell Sprewell is twice the player JR Smith will ever be. That is all. For now.

  • Mendel Posted: Aug.26 at 1:52 pm
“Of course this happened” agreed. I wish there were more reports like this. You know NBA players choke out or stiff arms lots scrubs over the summer. Jordan used to brake fellow NBA players noses and ribs in summer runs allegedly. The dude is a punk to call the cops and its the Denver organizations fault for not protecting their player/employee from harassment.

  • Ryan.T. Posted: Aug.26 at 1:53 pm
-Whomever the person was that got choked, is an idiot… What’s the point of calling the cops if your not gonna press charges? Handle your business like a grown man then..

  • KB Posted: Aug.26 at 2:00 pm
i watched juice too. on BET

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Aug.26 at 2:29 pm
Is everyone an internet tough guy now? Maybe he called the police to prevent JR Smith’s dumb @ss from further attacking him? You know, it’s called protecting yourself? And he probably didn’t press charges because of pressure from the team/organization… You know, he kind of wants to WORK?

  • LA Huey Posted: Aug.26 at 3:05 pm
    Thanks, Allenp.

  • haha Posted: Aug.26 at 3:56 pm
hahaha i guess we all watched us some juice last nite, in the unedited version pacs a pretty good actor. It’s hard to watch edited tho.

  • tavoris Posted: Aug.26 at 4:53 pm
@Teddy-Sprewell was FIVE TIMES the player JR smith is.

  • Allenp Posted: Aug.26 at 6:05 pm
    Every time I see this headline, I chuckle… I can’t help it.

  • The Seed Posted: Aug.26 at 7:35 pm
    He might be untradeable now.

  • jawjack Posted: Aug.26 at 8:40 pm
Since JR is a creative thinker, he might have done this on purpose so he wouldn’t get traded.

  • Robb Posted: Aug.26 at 10:15 pm
    Natural born thugget

  • Dacre Posted: Aug.26 at 10:34 pm
Well it’s a different take on the way the WHOLE TEAM CHOKED in the playoffs just gone…..

  • Ryan.T. Posted: Aug.27 at 2:00 am
    @ Teddy-the-Bear
-Further attacking him? You make it sound like JR Smith’s picking on a little kid.. If the guy is guarding JR & being physical with him, he’s obviously man enough to take care of himself. Any situation similar to this on any court whether it’s Rec League, a pick up game, or practice, results in physical confrontations, so it has nothing to do with being a “internet tough guy”. You must not play ball if you can’t relate to a situation similar to this

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Aug.27 at 2:36 am
^ lol I understand what you’re saying Ryan, and I’ve been in a few on-court fights ever since Jr. High basketball. I’m just saying, there’s a difference between being physical and choking. And who knows, if he was actually getting hurt by JR Smith, calling the cops would be the smart choice, no?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Aug.27 at 2:37 am
And no, please don’t laugh at me mentioning Jr. High basketball fights…. I don’t think that makes me tough. Or a fighter.

  • tavoris Posted: Aug.27 at 8:37 am
@Ryan-the guy was told be the Nugget’s coaching staff to body JR up. JR has never known how to control his emotions. This wasn’t a streetball game.
&in defense of Teddy, if a player can’t take a little physicality (that was sanctioned by your employer), then said player is a pu$$y.
