Will Celtics Look at Trading for Rudy Fernandez?

Rudy is unhappy in Portland (to say the least), and Danny Ainge admits to be looking at a few trade possibilities. The Globe starts wondering if something could be cooking: “One roster spot is still available, and everyone from Danny Ainge to Doc Rivers to back-seat general manager Paul Pierce has said that the Celtics need another piece — specifically, a shooter. With reports circling about interest in fiery if disgruntled Portland guard Rudy Fernandez, Ainge acknowledged that he was pursuing trade options, though he wasn’t sure a deal would fall in place. ‘We’re just continuing to explore available players and trade possibilities and see what sort of options are there,’ said the Celtics president. ‘There are some trade discussions that we’re having. I don’t know the likelihood of those happening, but we’ll continue to not rush into something unless it’s something that we’re really excited about.’ The Knicks and Bulls also are thought to have interest in Fernandez, who by going most of the summer without talking to Trail Blazers management has made it clear that he does not want to return to Portland.”

    I hope so.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

It is a fact that Spanish players hate playing in cold cities. Don’t get your hopes up, Boston.

  • ClydeSays

    Get it done, Danny!

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I like this idea a lot as a Celtics fan. Rudy is young enough to survive the Big 3 era, and while he wouldn’t get too much PT initially, he would be a big part of their future, and he’d be contending for a championship. Bench of Nate, Rudy, Wafer, Davis, S/J Oneal would be a great second unit. Keep in mind Doc will be keeping the minutes of his vets down during the regular season and Rudy could be getting a lot more PT than he’d expect.

as a celtics fan i DON’T like this idea, i don’t know if he is a premadonna but he sure comes off that way from what i have seen/read. I think he’s a better fit for the knicks since he’s a quick and agile guard who demands the ball. The celts do need shooters but they could pick up someone more true in style to how they play.

  • Groves

Go get a trade to Miami or New York

  • tavoris

The Celtics need to be looking for a SF to back up Pierce. Not another shooting guard.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Who would the Celtics move?

  • tavoris

@Eboy-they have 2 many PF’s and 2′s now. Let do of Daniels and/or Big Baby. Neither are gonna get a lot of minutes anyway unless somebody gets hurt.

  • The Philosopher

    Maybe Daniels?^^

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

Hahahaaaa, and he thought playing in Rip City was tough. By the time KG, Rondo, Shaq and (to a lesser extent) Pierce & Doc are done with him, it’ll be possible to make a jigsaw puzzle out of the shattered pieces of his spirit (not that the prissy whiner had much to begin with). Yes, i despise la Rudé.

  • The Philosopher

    Rudy does have softness.
I personally have problems with quitters.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Avery Bradley could be traded away; with Wafer and Nate Robinson around they won’t have too much of a need at the guard spots and he is a little undersized for the 2-guard position. Marquis Daniels maybe.

When you say style of play do you mean a team game? Because Rudy is complaining about PT, not that he isn’t the top dog; Euros know how to play team ball.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I’m pretty sure Bradley is not gonna be included in a trade for Fernandez. He’s a lock down defender and a pure shooter.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

@Kap, Bradley’s a pure shooter? 54% free throw percentage last year. I’d like to see what the guy could do for the Celtics before he’s ever traded away though. At some point this team needs to start building [young] again.

  • Hurricane

You guys really think the Blazers will trade Fernandez for Daniels LMFAO
@ tavoris- I think the Blazers would accept Daniels/Davis for Fernandez in a second, I don’t know if it makes sense for the Celtics though

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

He would suck major balls as a Celtic. He doesn’t play defense and he’s not mentally or physically tough.

  • Spaniard

It is a fact that Spanish players hate playing in cold cities. Don’t get your hopes up, Boston.
@LDR4: That’s unfair, they also hate Memphis.

  • flipnoyce

The C’s need a SF not a shooting guard. The pieces that the C’s have are already set to go. Look elsewhere!!!!

  • JTaylor21

The celtics don’t like people who don’t at least TRY to play defense, so rudy is out of the picture. Soft a** euroPAM.

  • Wesley-David

    yea yea

  • http://thosefishtacosarethetits.blogspot.com Boston_Blogg3r

All they have offered thus far is a future 1st-round pick. I’m all for picking up Fernandez but not if it means losing Marquis Daniels, who was tremendous during the first few months of last season (when C’s held the top record in the League before injuries hit). After he came back, he was never the same playing behind Tony Allen. Daniels is a definite upgrade over Tony Allen in and of himself so I’m not too worried over the team Ainge has put together for the year, and I wouldn’t look at Shaq and Jermaine as leaving the C’s with “too many bigs” as I did read something last week about Perkins possibly missing the entire year, which would leave J.O. to back up Shaq and Garnett with Rasheed potentially coming back in February. If the Celtics can avoid the injury bug this year, they should be an improved version of last year’s team (which was, in my opinion, a Ray Allen injury from winning the Championship as he was never the same after taking that hit from Artest).

  • http://thosefishtacosarethetits.blogspot.com Boston_Blogg3r

Besides, hasn’t he said he wants to go back to Europe for the next few seasons? Most of these Euroleague guys aren’t cut out for the big leagues.

  • JD

I doubt that Rudy will get the kind of PT that he want in Boston

  • BostonBaller

Stop all the nonsense, Davis can not be traded for rudy. Whether you like his game or personality or not, Davis has proven himself (especially in the playoffs) I’d hate to see Daniels go for him also b/c I’d like to see what he has when completely healthy and to package Davis 7 Daniels for Rudy would be foolish at best

  • rich

correct me if im wrong but their depth chart is something like this

why rudy they need a 3 who can play some 4 in exchnge for bradley davis and a pick. another 2 guard would just cause chemistry issues. they should go after someone like al thorton long athletic and could ply defense if taught properly

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Do we have a nickname for him yet? I’m going for Rudy “Don’t Call My Name, Don’t Call My Name” Fernandez.

  • MikeC.

If he doesn’t play in Portland due to certain deficiencies, wouldn’t those same deficiencies keep him benched in Boston? Boston values defense first, which is something Nate emphasises in Portland. In my opinon, this would be a lateral move for Rudy. The only plus would be more national tv appearances for him to be seen on the bench. Rudy needs to go somewhere that emphasises offense first. Phoenix, NY, GS, Denver seem like good systems for him. NY would be able to give him the most PT as we’re a little thin at the 2 and don’t have a reliable backup PG. Come to NY Rudy.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Haha @ Anton… I thought Daniels was a (back-up) 3?? Trade him to NY so he can be reunited with his butt-buddy Sergio Rodriegez..

  • Robb

If they do they should call themselves “One wimp and a bunch of of grampas”

  • Bruno

this’d be actually an upgrade depending on who they move

  • LA Huey

co-sign everyone that cites the Celtics’ emphasis on defense and mental toughness. Rudy would be a terrible fit for Boston.

  • http://queerballs.tumblr.com dma

even if the celtics wanted him, what could they realistically send back? the only thing portland needs is either a backup bruising PF or a better starting PG, and no way Rondo is getting moved.

  • Coney Islander

  • MikeC.

^^ i’d give up a lot, but I draw the line at my testes.

  • Nate C

they were a defensive team under Tom Thib, and without Tony Allen, they have really lost that D mentality, Rudy might fit, but Shaq and KG will give him a million hard fouls in practice

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Tom Thibodeaux just left this off season.
They haven’t played a single game yet, so how do we know they’ve lost their defensive mentality?

  • ethan

the c’s dont even need a guard so wut is ainge talkin bout?

  • total scrotal implosion

Nate, von wafer, daniels , glen,, jo, avery. Bench looks good to me

  • Yesse

    Might be alright.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ The Promise

Co-sign BostonBaller. Ainge is crazy if he trades away Davis for Fernandez. I say they just hand em’ a first round pick and either Nate, Daniels, or possibly Harangody. Thats their best bet, anything other than that would be lopsided in the Blazers favor. Avery Bradley probably won’t get a chance to develop this season if Nate is ahead of him, unless they want to play him at the 2 instead of the 1. Regardless, I wouldn’t want to trade either guy away because both will be valuable to their championship hopes next season. I don’t see where Fernandez fits in on this team, he’s not defensive minded, and he will be looking to score when he gets the ball, whether he’s open or not. I just don’t like this idea. He is a much better fit in New York in D’antoni’s offense.

  • CoraSong

    Hahahaha @ mke C.!

  • JTaylor21

I give up all my testicles just to play in the NBA. What are they good for? Who needs kids by the way.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Celtics are desperate, so Rudy sounds good, but looks can be decieving.

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out to Phillip Champion.
The greatest ball handler who has ever lived.

  • who

These Euros have a lot of nerve, coming over here and averaging single digit points and demanding trades.

  • http://Www.lkz.cd Darksaber

    MikeC: faaantastic line, man.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Couldn’t they move Marquis or include cash and draft picks?? What about Luke Harangooody? The rook thats only going to get burn in practice this season???

  • http://gregoden.com roybot

i bet boston already offered marquis or picks, but thats not what portland needs or wants. They want either davis or another package that makes sense for them. Portland realizes that Rudy still has trade value so they’re waiting for better offers.

  • http://www.springbored.net letsmotor

@The Seed: Yeah, the Celtics are desperate alright. Especially after they brought the Cavs and Magic to their knees last season and came within one quarter of a championship.

Anyway, the Celtics shouldn’t make any moves to acquire him. He just wouldn’t be beneficial.

  • RedRum

I like it. Rudy can be the Cs Ginobili. Coming off the bench for significant minutes providing instant scoring with the second unit. He would not need to play tough D, the others can take care of that, just put the ball in the bucket.

the lakers need to try n trade sasha, morisson and maybe even luke for rudy and someone else. thats a 3 peat right there.

  • http://www.acb.com Alan

Rudy is a very good player, please take a look at this world championship, there is basketball beyond nba. Spain is now world champion playing real basket, like Celts, team basket, tough defense, and there are two names in that team (I mean, the team that won four years ago), Gasol and Fernandez. Where is Gasol now?, Celts didn´t want him and….L.A., two consecutive rings…Fernandez can shot and make a good defense (sometimes he is the leader of a team world champion, who is Von Waffer?). Bad influence for the team, bad actittud?…come on, for the first time, look a game of Spain this world championship, then talk about it. BTW, as usual lot of prejudgment about european (spanish) players… quite pathetic… we’ll see if your super usa squad can be world champs, 16 years since last time… but big mouths still…

  • dsleepy21

celtics need to get posey back.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

We don’t care about the World Championships. We only care about the Olympics. Didn’t you get the memo?

  • Tyler

Man f**k the World Championship this is the NBA and it proved to be too much for Rudy Tooty Fresh and Fruity. Soft ass
