Carmelo Anthony Trade ‘Has Legs’

by Ryne Nelson

The proposed four-team trade involving Carmelo Anthony has “legs” according to the Denver Post, though only if Melo agrees to a contract extension with the Nets.

All parties want to get a deal done before training camp on Monday, so this weekend will be critical.

Reports Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post:

According to multiple NBA sources who say a four-team trade that would send the Nuggets’ Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey could happen this weekend, as talks are ongoing.

The blockbuster trade, according to a source close to the negotiations, has “legs” but is complicated by the number of teams involved and the need for Anthony to sign a contract extension.

If the current trade being discussed goes through, it would send Anthony to the Nets while Denver would acquire Nets’ rookie post Derrick Favors, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft. The Nuggets also would get forward Andrei Kirilenko — and his expiring $18 million contract — from Utah. He averaged 11.9 points per game last season but battled injuries. And, as of late Friday night, the proposed deal would land the Nuggets a 2012 first-round pick from New Jersey, which previously belonged to Golden State.

As Hochman points out, the Nuggets are considering the deal because it offers the team a chance to get “younger, bigger and free up salary cap space.” Not bad options considering the tight situation Carmelo’s put them in.

If the deal goes through, the Nets will be downgrading at PG as well as giving up their high-potential PF in rookie Derrick Favors.

Sure, Melo wants to be in a bigger market and play for a contender. But can New Jersey provide that? Not yet. But Chris Paul could help…

Mello is doomed to be the next Dominque Wilkins. This is a horriable move for Melo if he actually cares about winning. The nets will need at least another 2-3 years to rebuild and put some supporting cast around him

Melo would be taking a pretty big risk if he decides to go to the Nets. He should just wait for free agency in my opinion.

  • JuicyM

Sixers should have tried harder to get Melo…

  • http://twitter.com/MotorCityHero King Henry the 2nd

How much better would the Nets be then Denver? It would be dumb for Melo to agree to this.

  • The D Train

Not sure why anyone cares what Melo thinks. Pretty sure Lala is the one who makes the pants in that relationship.

  • C.B

    why melo? why?

  • rob stewart

If this trade works out I wonder if New Jersey would consider picking up Iverson since they will be losing Harris.

  • NJ4Life

So by next year, my Nets will have the cap space to sign paul?

  • NicktheQuick

I love it when they say that about 20 teams have called the Nuggets about Melo. Makes you wonder which 10 teams decided not to call. #1 Wolves #2 Raptors. #3 Lakers ….

  • Young C

He should go to chicago, a better fit there.

Melo should sit tight and wait until he’s a free agent. Then he can shop around and determine where he fits best and which team has created the ideal landing spot. The CBA complicates things, sure, but most teams will max him, so whatever is in the agreement, he’ll still be in the elite class.

    Co-sign Cheryl. :D

It’s clearly wise for Carmelo to be patient right now, and go back to Denver. Of course Denver is going to press Carmelo to make a decision right now, due to the fact each day that passes by and draws closer to next seasons NBA trade deadline the Nuggets lose more and more leverage. All Carmelo needs to do right now is honor his contract, and go join his teammates in Denver, and give it his all this season. See how it works out, and if the future still looks really cloudy in Denver, Carmelo can then choose his own future team without that future team having to give anything up to add him to their roster. On the other hand, the worst case scenario for Carmelo, is he goes somewhere he truly doesn’t want to go, gets stuck in basketball purgatory, thinks he got his money under the old CBA, but still loses his money when the new CBA comes out, that is if the owners do implement that salary roll back like the NHL did. If I’m Carmelo’s agent, I tell the Nuggets the have two choices entering this season: Show a REAL commitment to winning to keep Carmelo in Denver by adding to the team, or trade him to the Knicks. There is no other choice. If they won’t do what it takes to keep Carmelo in Denver, then Nuggets fans/media can hate on the Kroenke family for being cheap, not Carmelo Anthony who’s been loyal to the Nuggets franchise since they drafted him in 2003.

i think this is more about the nuggets trying to make a move rather than carmelo leaving. its going to be awkward for denver knowing carmelo doesnt want to stick around after this season. im sure melo doesnt prefer to go to the nets, but we will see how bad he wants out of denver

When did Carmelo say he won’t stick around after this season in Denver? Link?

  • BostonBaller

So far IAMORANGE4EVER is sounding as logical as anyone. Melo needs to be patient AND professional. Patience can land him where he really wants to be AND professionalism will garner him respect through this nonsense.

  • bakers’-dozen

Melo will be screwed on a team taht won 13 games. They’re losing the pieces they ahd (if this goes through), and there’s no guarantee NJ would land Chirs Paul or anybody else. They have a history of not putting all the pieces together. Let Melo walk. It’s proven he doesnt’ care about winning if this goes through. Plus he’ll be fighting LeBron and the Celts, too. Count it, if he goes to NJ, he won’t hit the playoffs again for another 5-6 years, minimum.

@Cheryl: why should the Nuggets wait? So they can only get trade exemptions and draft picks at the very most when Carmelo gets up and walks away this summer?

  • rob stewart

Melo just wants to kick it with Jay Z and put his wife in a big market city. It’s all about business and having fun. Basketball is secondary. Kind of like college. It always seemed like school work got in the way of what college was all about

  • dma

why are people putting the blame on Carmelo because he didn’t sign the contract extension? If you were in his shoes, you’d be pissed too if you had to play with shoot first players like JR Smith, Nene and Billups. And then they bring in Al Harrington, another chucker. And these actual TRADE IDEAS that are floating around are the Nuggets’ doing.

  • b

I agree… Melo should put an ultimatum on the Nuggets… trade me to th Knicks or build a team that will win for years to come… and he should state that he won’t sign an extension unless he goes to the Knicks or Bulls

  • http://www.slamonline.com Xavier G

If Denver and NJ are similar wouldn’t it be smart for him to at least be happy on the EAST in the same situation…….and Nets are a 7th seed this year *Without Melo* but what about Denver Cause they on there way down.

  • bobby

God forbid he stays in Denver and try to help the team which was great last season considering the stuff that happened to them. Trade him somewhere where there will be all-stars in every position waiting for him.

  • Deon

Melo shouldnt want any trade unless A- I’ts to the Bulls. or B- He knows CP3 will come next yr.

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

@rob stewart: I was wondering the same thing about Iverson. I really think it would make a huge difference in their playoff chances. In my opinion, the Nets are a worse team than last year if this trade goes through — although their record probably won’t reflect that.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Since when has Melo suddenly refused to play for Houston? =\

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

And like the Knicks, why does everyone assume EVERY player wants to play for the Nets? I mean, they’re the NETS.

Patience and Professionalism… Well said BostonBaller.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Theyd lose devin, but melo murph and brook is a hell of a front line.

  • dano

Should have had the patience and professionalism not to ask out before his contract was up.

  • @jcheat305

Melo can’t win this year either way

  • @jcheat305

Melo can’t win this year either way

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

This is so dumb on Melo’s part, the Sixers pissed me off when they decided they won’t pursue Melo, how stupid of them…. they could have got rid of Iggy’s big contract and Melo would have been the franchise player, Melo,Turner, Holiday, Brand would be a nice squad… that franchise isn’t going anywhere and Melo could have been that guy for them. The Nets are just way to risky and now the rumor is they trying to get CP3 for 2012, does Melo really want to wait 2 years to contend? Go to NY or Chi town!

  • flash

    Knicks or no deal!

  • Coney Islander

    I second flash!!!

  • ALEX80

Go to Knicks and cut the s#%t!!!!!!

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

IAMORANGEFOREVER is actually making perfect sence. cant say it any better than that

  • C-Mac

Would have been better if the sixers had given them Iguodala and someone else for him, now that’s Jrue Holiday, Evan Turner, Carmelo, Brand and Speights/Hawes. With Thaddeus and Lou Williams coming off the bench. I know that trade might not make them championship contenders this year, but they would be able to make it out of the first round and every free agent would want to go there next year.

  • str8 from samoa

melo is makin da biggest mistake of his life if he does go to nets

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

If Rafer Alston is still on the Nets he can fill in for Devin Harris, with Melo, Murphy, and Brook to pass to I’m sure…

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Either the Bulls or Knicks would have been far better options.

  • starky larky

even the Knicks are a bad fit. :/
really, Chicago’s the best place he can land, basketball-wise.
Houston’s basically the same as Denver.
NY is coming next year. This year is an audition for free agents.
NJ? They’re in a good position already, why screw it up?
Philly’s assets are too little for Melo’s value, but Iggy would fit in well with the Nuggets.

i’d go to Chicago if I were him, with or without Noah. But of course that aint for him to decide.
