Carmelo Seeks Kobe’s Advice

Is that the best idea?

While a possible trade to the New Jersey Nets simmers, Carmelo Anthony’s seeking the counsel of Kobe Bryant. According to Marc Spears of Yahoo!, Bryant, who demanded and then un-demanded a deal in 2007, recently spoke with Melo about the +/- of a trade. According to Spears, Bryant advised the seven-year pro to be cautious about leaving Denver unless he’s totally happy with the landing spot (reportedly New Jersey).

Here’s a bit of the Yahoo! column:

“Bryant’s advice to ‘Melo?

Don’t leave just to leave.

“We’ll see if he signs a reasonable extension and if he’s 100 percent happy that it’s where he wants to go,” Bryant told Yahoo! Sports Saturday. “If not, don’t make a move just to get out of the situation. …Make sure it’s a move that you’re very happy in and you’re comfortable with.”

“I’m closer to him than anyone else from my Olympic team,” Bryant said. “My advice is to do what he feels is right for him and his family. It starts there. He has to be happy with the situation that he is in because if your heart isn’t where it should be, it could have a half-ass effect. You don’t want that. You can’t please everybody. You just have to do what’s right for you.”

My question: Isn’t there a possible conflict of interest here? I mean, don’t the Nuggets and Lakers compete in the same Western Conference? Didn’t they meet up in the Conference Finals just two seasons ago?

Then again, I sincerely doubt that Kobe would give bad advice to Melo just to gain a competitive advantage. Plus, wouldn’t it benefit L.A. if Melo was dealt to an Eastern Conference team (something that Bryant sort of advised Anthony against)? Plus plus, aren’t they friends (and who would steer a buddy wrong)?

So I don’t put much stock in there actually being a conflict of interest.

Still, Kobe always plays to win. I can’t help but wonder if he’s doing that now, too.

Players used to go to Jordan for advice. Now, the superstars are going to Kobe.

  • Blackphantom Posted: Sep.26 at 10:26 am
    That isn’t necessarily bad advice

  • hammer Posted: Sep.26 at 10:33 am
Tell em how its done kobe! Go on espn radio, demand a trade,go back a couple hrs later, undemand the trade,go back again and soften ur stance, then tell stephen a smith (hrs later)that u still want 2 get traded. U got that melo? That’s how it done

  • underdog Posted: Sep.26 at 10:35 am
The “half-ass effect” is another term for the “Vince Carter effect”?

  • Love4Humanity Posted: Sep.26 at 10:36 am
Sounds like Kobe gave Melo good advice. The Nets are going to be worse than the Nuggets next season whether Melo is traded to them or not.

  • kings4life707 Posted: Sep.26 at 10:38 am
2002 Western Conference Finals were fixed.
just ask Tim Donaghy……look it up!!!

  • Z-man Posted: Sep.26 at 10:39 am
With Carmelo out east, Kobe just has Durant to worry about.

  • LB Posted: Sep.26 at 10:43 am
I’d say it worked out for Kobe to stay. I think Melo should stay. The Nuggets actually have a very talented squad. They’ve got a top flight point with championship experience in Chauncey Billups. They have a deep and rugged crew of frontcourt players in Kenyon Martin, Birdman Anderson and Nene (if they can just stay healthy). They’ve got a budding defensive stopper in Afflalo. And they’ve got a game changer in JR Smith (if only he can get his head together). If the New Jersey trade comes through like the medias been talking about, will Melo necessarily walk into a better situation talent wise? The Nets are GOING to have to either let go of Devin Harris or Derrick Favors to land Melo. So that means Melo and Brook Lopez are going to have to carry a mediocore at best Nets team. They’ll probably make the playoffs. But this isnt the weak East anymore, where teams made the playoffs with .500 records. The Nets even with Melo will still be a long way off from the Celtics, the Magic, the Heat, the Bulls, the Hawks and the Bucks. Sp I dont think moving to the East will necessarily get Melo closer to a championship any more so than staying in Denver would.

Carmelo should go to the nets. Nets will lose devin harris but then get chris paul when he is a free agent next year. also they have enough money to search for some more free agents in the next summer. Not only that but he will play in the east which the nets can easily make. Also if you noticed every championship team has a great center and shooting guard. Look at the lakers man. When they had shaq and kobe. Carmelo and Brook lopez will be great and troy murphy is not bad as a power foward. Think about it Lopez,Carmelo,Chris Paul. I love Amare Stroudimire but Carmelo would do better with lopez then amare, and the Amare really cant play Defense. Also mike D toni will never win a championship with his type of gameplay. Avery Johnson is a defensive coach not only that he went to the finals when he coached the mavs. Carmelo should go to the Nets.

Carmelo has something that miami heat do not have, which is a great center Brook lopez. Lopez,Carmelo, Chris paul > Lebron, Wade, Chris Bosh, Chris paul is better point guard and can score and check Dwayne Wade, Carmelo and lebron are tied And Lopez in my opnion is better than bosh his prime will pass bosh’s Prime also Lopez is 7 foot. Basically Carmelo should go to the nets Great Coach great Center and a future/great Point guard (chris paul)

With melo out of town there will be more Colorado hotel rooms for the black mamba to slither in and out of

  • Eric Posted: Sep.26 at 11:12 am
I’m convinced you wrote this just to get hits for mentioning Kobe. Your whole point is that Kobe has a conflict of interest which would mean he wants to see Melo shipped east. Then you quote an article specifically saying Kobe told Melo not to be too quick to leave Denver. So, what’s your point? The article lied? Kobe’s using reverse psychology? You need a thesis, bro.

  • Z-man Posted: Sep.26 at 11:15 am

  • Anton Posted: Sep.26 at 12:56 pm
LeBron told him to keep his talents in the western conference.

Kobe is Carmelo’s brother from another mother.

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Sep.26 at 1:28 pm
Of course take advice from a player who threatened the entire team and organization, sure that’s going to Hitler for advice on how to treat your fellow human beings.

  • Kevin Posted: Sep.26 at 1:29 pm
what a retarded slant about Kobe trying to “trick” someone to gain an advantage.. killers don’t need to pull any stunts, don’t think the Lakers were going to be challenged by any Denver Nugget team anytime soon..

  • Da Holy Karron Posted: Sep.26 at 1:33 pm

  • LD Posted: Sep.26 at 1:50 pm
@Kevin- That’s what I’m thinking. It’s just to add to the allure of Kobe to make him some kind of mythical figure. I’m a Kobe fan, but some stuff said about him is not filtered by rational thought.

  • BossTerry Posted: Sep.26 at 1:57 pm
Kobe Bryant- Where flawless decision-making happens..

  • bashmo Posted: Sep.26 at 2:17 pm
Hooper carmelo going to the nets is not a bad idea…but that’s not a championship squad with or without melo. If you get CP3 tho things are heating up, but i dont think Paul will head to New Jersey after Free agency. Carmelo should just stay in Denver.

  • BossTerry Posted: Sep.26 at 2:53 pm
1 thing they have in common- Melo plays for Denver, which is in Colorado, Colorado is home to a girl whom Kobe told- “Stop Stitchin’”!

  • BossTerry Posted: Sep.26 at 2:56 pm
I think a change of scenery would be good for Melo.. Lets be honest, Denver is not gonna win a championship with this current roster, if he goes to NJ, they wont win one either, but young players will become better, and might lure some free agents, in a year or two, who knows?

  • Love4Humanity Posted: Sep.26 at 3:02 pm
All of the Kobe-Colorado jokes have been played out for years. Kobe doesn’t care whether Melo is in Denver or wherever, the Lakers aren’t afraid of the Heat, won’t be afraid of the Nuggets or Nets.

  • Silent Storm Posted: Sep.26 at 3:11 pm
    Kobe’s advice? Go east.

  • Royal Posted: Sep.26 at 3:11 pm
I really think Melo should just wait until he is a free agent

  • Aashwin Posted: Sep.26 at 3:20 pm
Are you seriously doubting a 5 time champion’s integrity?
Im just flabbergasted….i cant believe you have the nerve to say something like that about KOBE BRYANT.
He’s an all-star and he’s worked his way up there, you can’t just blame him for telling Melo what he feels like.

  • Philly Posted: Sep.26 at 3:34 pm
back in the 90s no superstar would Ask another superstar for advice cuz they were rivalries back then!!! miss that

  • The Philosopher Posted: Sep.26 at 3:35 pm
Kobe will give him good advice.
    He is a champion.

  • The Philosopher Posted: Sep.26 at 3:38 pm
And, I agree with whomever stated that Anthony should ride out the year and go from there.

  • His Airness Posted: Sep.26 at 3:39 pm
I think he should go to the Nets. The move is going to really help this team and they have a great center in Brook Lopez. They would be serious contenders next season with some free agent acquisitions. Not to mention he would be making La La a very happy woman. That’s always a plus.

  • poopinamilkshake Posted: Sep.26 at 3:45 pm
CHILD PLEASE, someone just said that players back then asked MJ for advice, so shove that “I miss the 90s” crap up your ___. F*ck the 90s, this is the ’10s stop living in the past.

  • SoCalHoopsFan Posted: Sep.26 at 3:48 pm
Kobe basically is tellilng ‘Melo to think things through, the best advice anyone could have given him. Looks like Kobe is this generations MJ, the sage scholar that younger players look for advice from – and he’s only barely over 30! Look at the number of young players that voted him most popular the other day – he got 4x as many votes as any other player did. What is happening, not necessarily ‘Melo but younger players, they grew up watching Kobe, so he’s the leagues current elder. They could do a lot worse than turn to Kobe for advice…

  • JTaylor21 Posted: Sep.26 at 3:54 pm
STOP with the MJ-Kobe talk, PLEASE it’s moronic to compare him to a guy that would devour kobe in any game setting. There’s not one attribute that kobe’s head and shoulders above MJ while Mike’s head and shoulders above KB in a couple of areas. Not one kobe fan would pick him over MJ regardless of what they say.

  • the nerve Posted: Sep.26 at 3:56 pm
    tell deez catz

  • tina Posted: Sep.26 at 4:01 pm
it’s ironic how an anti-kobe fan would know that kobe fans wouldn’t pick him over mj.

  • LD Posted: Sep.26 at 4:12 pm
Nobody said Kobe was as good as Jordan. Kobe just took over Jordan’s position as a CURRENT NBA player that other current NBA players go to for advice. They are not going to LeBron, Iverson, or McGrady about what to do. There was a time when Kobe asked Jordan for advice. He is one of the few links that NBA players have as far as obtaining wisdom passed down from Jordan.

  • Negative kreep Posted: Sep.26 at 4:15 pm
The nerves comments read like song titles from 90′s era gangsta rap. No offense, just saying.

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.26 at 4:47 pm

  • Nick the Quick Posted: Sep.26 at 5:17 pm
Here we go again… Kobe + MJ x Love/Hate = 300+ comments from all these dudes who think they are the definitive authority on who’s greater, who’s stats are greater, who will never be greater, who’s advice other players sought and respected more, etc same old conversations that never ever get resolved. why even bother doing this anytime a Kobe/MJ/Lebron and even lately KD post is up?

  • Teddy-the-Bear Posted: Sep.26 at 5:30 pm
^^^ Because MJ is clearly better than Kobe, DUH!

  • kobethebasketballmessiah Posted: Sep.26 at 6:44 pm
A lot of you always pick MJ because he is MJ, he became untouchable to our eyes (noticed i included myself). Kobe is the guy people downplay because he is not MJ and also because he wanted to be the best. why can’t we appreciate both of them?Remember, MJs games aren’t always perfect. He had bad shooting nights on a finals game too and whatnot. Point is, let’s not turn this into another MJ vs Kobe thing. It’s not question of who’s better, nowhere in the article was MJ’s name mentioned. I agree that KObe is this generation’s MJ but I didn’t say he is better than MJ because that’s not what the article is all about nor will i dare say it because it is simply moronic.I don’t want to downplay Kobe because he’s got some serious achievements too..

  • Conoro Posted: Sep.26 at 8:01 pm
JTaylor… shut your absolutely filthy gob.

  • Eduardo Posted: Sep.26 at 8:13 pm
Pretty good advice in my opinion as Kobe’s saying not to go a team that you’re not 100% happy with. Be a bad situation if Melo goes to the Nets then wants out a year or two later.

  • Love4Humanity Posted: Sep.26 at 8:16 pm
For anyone who questions Kobe’s intellect due to the fact that he didn’t go to college, the man speaks three languages fluently and was headed to Duke if he didn’t go to the NBA…so he’s not exactly a dumb guy, college or not.

Why are there so many idiots out there? So a young Lopez, Melo and ‘maybe’ CP3 can win a title just like that? No way, not over the Celtics in the next2-3 years and def not over the Magic,Hawks,Heat,(Bucks?). Staying in the West with a stacked team is a much more solid idea, a basktball reason. If he leaves its because LaLa wants him to. Melo, I’m sure you’re not an idiot. I don’t see why you would want to waste a year in jersey hoping for CP3 to come when even if he does, it hardly guarantees you a trip past the first round of the playoffs.

Kobe gave sound advice, period. Also who cares about MJ, not all of his teammates liked him and he did alot of things wrong at the time, never reported. Its funny cats bring MJ into the discussion everytime about Kobe, you know what that tells you, people know Kobe can only be compared to MJ, so the only way to discredit him is to say something about MJ. BOOK IT!!

  • BossTerry Posted: Sep.27 at 4:04 am

  • BossTerry Posted: Sep.27 at 4:45 am
ish, I godda say something nice about Kobe- well, um, I hate him.. but that Lakers team seems to work (for now)… He’s winning rings, while I think he’s an ass*o*e, Kobe is a winner, just ask h0is wife whom has followed and trusted him long ago.. Im sorry, but I hate cheaters.. I’ve had ugly g/fs, never cheated for better (even though coulda).. He’s an unfaithful Douch, that couldnt stay true to his wife, and wouldnt have stuck around LA if it wasn’t for the Gasol trade.. Bigger A**hole then Mike.. (yes, G.o.a.t. Mike had Biches…

  • BossTerry Posted: Sep.27 at 4:51 am
    - just ask Anita….. Some of these A-holes get loot, and stick something different everyday. (my opinion, not very manly,( manly is dealing with your horrible, loud-mouthed kids).. Sh!t, in space-jam, M.J’s fam used their real names, but actors, for the wife, kids…

“people know Kobe can only be compared to MJ, so the only way to discredit him is to say something about MJ. BOOK IT!! ”
————————————— EXACTLY THE SEED. I love the fact Kobe irks people’s nerves and when he continues to win it just makes the salt rubbing in their wounds even more enjoyable lol!! They can’t discredit him for anything else, they have nothing else to talk about so why not recycle the typical anti-Kobe non sense because I mean… that’s all they can do lol!!! But yeah Kobe and Carmelo where the closest on the Olympic team, he and Kobe are really close like big bro little bro, so seeking his advice league player to league player isn’t a bad idea at all,I mean Kobe was in the same aituation pondering whether to stay and build a championship team or just jet out and he stayed and won two titles very shortly so hopefully Melo will make a wise choice. I wonder why Kobe’s trade demand is such a bitter moment for people and other players are not? Oh I forgot he’s Kobe anything he does people automatically hate or nit pick even if it’s a good thing lol!

  • Ali Posted: Sep.27 at 8:37 am
@BH…What has this guy Mikhail and Jay Z ever won in the association? NOTHING!!! Byron Scott, Kidd and Co. was Jersey’s best chance of ever winning a ring. Big Bank and Hip-Hop Fame ain’t gonna help any
    team win shi*.

  • Bryan Crawford Posted: Sep.27 at 8:48 am
Amid all the senseless Kobe bashing, it should be noted that Melo ASKED Kobe for his advice, Kob didn’t just volunteer it.

  • Ali Posted: Sep.27 at 9:02 am
Word up Bryan Crawford! What alot of us fans fail to realize is that alot of these top teir players are really cool with each other on and off the court. So this is not something out of the ordinary. As fans some of like to pit our favorite teams and players against each other in the worse way. These dudes are cordial with each other but when that ball gets tossed up, it’s on!
