Gregg Popovich Still Aiming for a Championship

Despite most observers’ assumptions that the Spurs are no longer in the title hunt, Pop thinks otherwise. Emphatically. From the Express-News: “So why is Gregg Popovich smiling? And why, in the lead-up to training camp, is he saying things like this: ‘We think we have the potential to be fantastic — and ‘fantastic’ means have an opportunity to win a championship.’ Splitter, for one, will help as near 7-footers with basketball sense often will. Anderson is considered a borderline lottery talent who dropped to the Spurs at No. 20. Maybe Neal can approximate what the artist formerly known as Big Shot Roger Mason accomplished in 2008-09. For further reason to hope, however, the Spurs need only look within. The Spurs can be better, if a handful of returning players are. Somewhere near the top of that list — Jefferson. Yes, Jefferson disappointed last season after arriving in a trade from Milwaukee. He averaged 12.3 points — most for a Spurs’ small forward in more than a decade — but was wildly inconsistent on both ends of the floor. The Spurs are doubling down on a bounce-back from Jefferson this season. They are putting a lot of eggs in the RJ basket. ‘His dedication and development this summer are going to be one of the most important things for our success,’ Popovich said Thursday.”

except for brief exposure in the world’s, haven’t seen splitter play much. is this kid as good as ppl are hyping him up to be? why did he get picked so late (28th)? albeit it was 2 yrs ago when he got drafted but if he’d had that much potential wouldn’t more teams have jumped?

i could get on board if jefferson weren’t involved. i still think they should trade parker while he has some value.

dsleepy, splitter is probably the best player in europe right now. him and Duncan will easily match up with gasol and bynum

  • ClydeSays

I think Duncan and Manu are on the downside, especially after playing deep into the post season for the better part of a decade. Still, Pops has 3 rings….

  • Ronald

Pop has 4 rings, doesn’t he? Knicks, Nets, Pistons, Cavs.

  • Anthony

If healthy we can get the 2nd/3rd seed in the West. The talent is here, it will depend on how quickly we mesh together.

Splitter can play, he’s a solid body, has good hands and can finish with both in the post.
Reasonably athletic, but not superior. He’s got good motor control and is co-ordinated. Not what you’d call a ‘stiff’.
At this point I’d say he’s a poor man’s Andrew Bogut.
Maybe a broke man’s Bogut. (Not sure about his passing though.

Uggh, why can’t the Spurs just go away?

    Splitter aka Stifler FTW!

I’ve always loved this team. 2nd round or Lakers is their ceiling this season though.

I see them haveing a outside chance of sneaking into the finals. They could be 3rd seed in the West I think if they stay healthy. They’re gonna go as far as a 35 year old Tim Duncan takes them.

Parker had a miserable season, hell bounce back cause he passed on the worlds and splitter will also help…theyll be right there

Very deep team. James anderson might be steal of the draft. Who the f is neal? Spurs will win the title

Lol, slamfail!!! Didnt include most important part of the article: jefferson was trained personally by pop this summer, he will be ready and contribute much better than last season

If there is one coach I wont ever doubt it’s Gregg Popovich

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Spurs window is dam near closed and locked.. But I can never count this group completely-out.. Not as long as they have TIMMY!!, Pop,Manu, and T.P.

  • TheTruth

Desleepy splitter was considered a lottery draft in 07 (top 10 easily) but was taken so low because he had a huge buy-out. The spurs have done it before and well more then likely do it again. They draft players who are considered good but have huge buy-outs like manu, scola, and splitter. They are opportunist now they are just waiting on nando de colo.

    Aaaaaand…the preseason delusions begin.

Gregg Popovich is the best coach in the NBA, and has been for the last decade.

My spurs will be great this season, but not sure if a title is within our grasp.

  • JD

I’ve heard that we can expect a similar sort of production from Splitter as from Luis Scola

  • Shem

Any team that isn’t going for a championship this upcoming season should be sent down to the DLeague.

  • Yesse

I really doubt this unless these guys can get some young blood to their roster.

James Hatch , you are wrong on at least 3-4 fronts. That really cracks me up. I know you personally!!! You know me. You know I am not fat (not that some people cant help it and I feel sorry for them) You know that I am not on welfare and that I pay taxes too. I like the street sweeper machinery , I even like the guy sweeping it! (hint , I am a girl)Its like mr Rogers neighborhood and we wave as he helps me out by sucking up the debris that I dont have time or the back to pick up. Its ok to have your anti sweeper attitude but you dont have to be be so calously rude to people who do and find themselves in the Ojai blog defending it. Its not very becoming of you.
