Luis Scola’s Dominance of World Championship Continues

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Kevin Durant has gotten all of the pub for his performance during the World Championship, but the tourney’s best player has actually been Luis Scola. And yesterday against Brazil, Scola proved once again why he’s the top dog.

The Houston Rockets’ forward led Argentina to a thrilling 93-89 win against regional rival Brazil, pouring in 37 points and inspiring teammates with gutty, relentless play:

Scola, the Houston Rockets forward who came in as the tournament’s leader with 29 points per game, scored 10 of Argentina’s final 12 over the last three-plus minutes. “I know that my team is going to look for me at the end of the game,” Scola said. “It’s nothing to really think about, you just have to play your game.”

Playing without San Antonio Spurs star Manu Ginobili and the Philadelphia 76ers’ Andres Nocioni, the Argentines were in danger Tuesday of elimination before the semifinals for the first time since missing the 2000 Olympics. But Scola wouldn’t let them. “He’s so thirsty, playing basketball, never tired of running and fighting for the ball, that we’ve got to follow him,” center Fabricio Oberto said.

The man who signed Scola to a contract extension this summer, GM Daryl Morey, certainly noticed the performance: “Scola goes into video game god mode to finish off Brazil. Wow.”

Your move, Kevin Durant.

luis is really a beast. his basketball skill set is astounding.

In my opinion, the best player in the tourney thus far is Lithuania’s (5-0), Linas Kleiza. His game has become so much more well rounded, and he’s grown into becoming a leader. The Raptors stole him from the Nuggets. BC’s still got it. 2 cents

  • larrylegend

dirk-like international performance by luis so far and it won’t stop…
@dark: look for SPORT1 stream for the rest of the tourney, a joy to listen to buschi (the only german sports-commentator who has a fan club) when scola and huertas battled it out.

i’d also like to thank nbatv for replaying the lithuania/china game instead of this one.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Thanks larrylegend, can’t wait. Thought Buschi was no longer commentating BBall. And Scola truly shot down Brazil last night. What a baller! Kleiza (and his fantastic/unstoppable turnaround fading jumphook) has been balling out of his mind since he joined Olympiakos last season. Fantastic tournament by him, Scola and Yi, imo.

    I love me some Fabio!
When I saw Luis play in the Olympics in 08 I was amazed at the difference between the assertiveness he showed then vs his standard Rockets play (which was still very solid). He just locks in totally when he plays for ARG. He says that he likes being ‘the man’ at times, and he consistently proves that he can handle that burden on the International stage.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Sasha Vujacic dreams at night that he plays as good as his older brother Luis Scola.

  • http://alan.george@gmail.com Breeze

that older brother comment is funny…but scola is the real deal hes needs to bring this to houston maybe they can atleast get beat in the second round this year.!

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

fiba for me has been almost unwatchable, and it’s all the announcers’ fault. Seriously, reggie miller sounds like huby freakin brown next to these dorks. From pronouncing turkoglu as turk-o-glue (!) to going on and on about how every foul looks like an unsportsman-like one…They are just awful. I’m thankful someone invented the mute button.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

i watched one game over the holiday where the sound was distorted on the color guy’s mic the entire time. the quality of some of it is poor, but it’s still hoops. just turn the sound down and be thankful that you’re not being subjected to baseball as much as usual.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Luis Scola and Sasha Vujacic versus Michael Beasley and Delonte West. Which team of brothers wins?

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

@IAMORANGE4EVER, can’t count on the Redz and CoolBeas to be sober and actually show up. I’ll take the foreigners.

  • JTaylor21

This guy can BALL unlike some Spaniard I know. STOP being SCARED and come to the league already.

  • JD

Yh i watched him in the Brazil game yesterday i wanted to Brazil to come back towards the end but every time Scola got the ball and he was open i got really annoyed cos i knew he’d score even before it went in. And it always did go in. Awesome player

  • lexluther703

Solid skill set and really relentless, he’s definitely a good player, but I don’t see a monster performance out of him when they face the U.S. Saturday. Skill players with limited athleticism like him struggle when playing super fast, super athletic teams such as the one we send from the states… definitely a good INTERNATIONAL player, but that being said, I think the U.S. shuts him down

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

I’ll man up and say when I’ve made a mistake— Scola is better than Navaro. Wow. This guy is a beast. He is underutilized in the L.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

“Scola goes into video game god mode to finish off Brazil. Wow”
    Fantastic quote!!

  • Ronald

I still can’t believe the Spurs gave Scola up for peanuts. I don’t even remember who we got for him. Sigh.

  • RV

Y’all got the greek Tmac for Scola…

  • T-Money

Spurs got Splitter for Scola, no?

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Aaaand down goes TeamWhine (Spain). An incredibly deep Serbian team just beat them. Navarro was good but also turned the ball over in crucial moments, Garbajosa shot well but turned the ball over in crucial moments. Ricky wasn’t good and turned the ba…. (u see where i’m going with this). A frantic, fastpaced, fantastic game, punctuated by Teodosic (horrible up to that point) dribbled away 20 of the last 23 seconds, then shot an Nba 3 straight into Garbasucksa’s whiney mug. Milos sure has big brass ones. Serbia had 2 players foul out, yet they kept trotting out key player after key contributer. Savanovic, Velickovic, even Bjelica and Krstic were BALLING.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

@Darksaber, hopefully I can catch it on ESPN3 replay after work. I knew that was going to be a good one.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Spain struggling this yr without Gasol is further proof of he being the best PF in the world IMO.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

That Serbia Spain game was crazy! European players are funny. They are like the cats you hate at the park who foul all the time, complain when you call a foul on them, and then want to call a foul every time they get rubbed a little too hard.
But, even with that, it was a nice game with the Serbs sinking clutch three after clutch three. This dude, Savanovic something, was giving Garbajosa and others the business off the bounce and on the block. And Serbia was just lights out from 3. Spain, other than Navarro who is the only cat I like on their squad, was whining way too much and looking for calls. And Rubio really needs to step up his killer instinct or something. Dude can ball, but he never took over the game at any point. Rudy Fernandez was the go to man, and any time Rudy is your go to man, your team is doomed in my opinion.
It was a good game, but it made me wonder why people always say Europeans are the “smart” basketball players. I saw some of the worst defensive and offensive decisions of all time in those games, just horrible choices by both teams.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

AllenP: now you know why i dubbed them ‘TeamWhine’.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

LOL…Spain are the Lakers of FIBA

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

And now everybody found out about Luis Scola…i remember yuor reactions when i was putting him on the “top-10 big men in the world” lists 3 years ago…whatever, doesn’t matter, better late than never (that’s my scope anyway, i don’t care how much time it’ll take, important is to finally wake up to reality ). Funny thing is (and that’s why i love it here) that Luis will be again ranked 40 places BELOW a guy that needs at least 20 years of practise to achive even 50% of the game Scola had 3 years ago(Dwight “super-guffy” howard)…i wonder if my pupil is still waiting for Dwight to develop a bball game (sorry jukai/tavoris ,don’t hold your breath on this one…)…
@kid calling “big balls” Teodosic ‘Milos who’(yeah Dark,it’s you, sorry )……: stop embarassing yourself.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Awww, Greek Douche is sad that his 3pt chuckers are out and keeps trying to get under my skin. How charming. Too bad he likes taking parts of comments then twist them out of context, plus add some cutesy remark pertaining to age or education/experience et voila, another winner. Transparent and too dumb to discuss really. On to the next game, poor Slovenian ears. Ish is about to get loud.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Dark
Yeah, they are a skilled and talented team but outside of Juan Carlos, and the dude Yule or something, they aren’t all that mentally tough. Man, I really like Juan Carlos. He has old man game. If he wasn’t so short, he probably could have done more in the league, but at his height with his limited athleticism and strength, he can’t compete against NBA guards.
I don’t understand why European players commit so many stupid, horrible fouls in the backcourt, nor do I think ANYONE should complain about NBA refs after watching FIBA refs. FIBA refs are ridiculous, just plain horrible. Seriously, after letting every team in the tournament not named USA set illegal moving screens all game long, they decided to call SEVEN moving screens in quick succession in the Serbia/Spain game. It was so random. And they would call touch fouls on two possessions, then watch quietly while a player got mugged. I’ve never seen so many makeup calls in a game, or refs get so intimidated by coaches and benches. It was horrendous.
And the level of flopping in Europe is just ghastly. It’s ugly.

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Spanny: So, you’re saying that, PURELY ON AN NBA LEVEL AND NOT ON A FIBA LEVEL, Scola is more valuable than Dwight Howard is?
Promise I wont laugh or bash you. Well, I wont type it out anyway.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

AllenP: true, those moving screens calls (by the american Ref, might i add) were ridiculous. Never seen such a sequence at this level of play before.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Man, 2am and watching ball. Haven’t done that since the 90′s back in Europe. This WBC is turning me into a zombie.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

“made me wonder why people always say Europeans are the “smart” basketball players”
@AllenP, because the majority of white athletes have the same amount of raw talent as Average Joe and attained their level of success due to their knowledge of the game. This is agreed upon by the entire scientific community.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@Dark….:not only you are a lier (no big thing, i am used to this here) you are also dumb (this is a deadly funny combination, i hope you didn’t mean this when you once called yourelf “combo guard”…)whatever: SCRIPTA MANET my little one:
Darksaber Posted: Sep.5 at 9:28 am
Sasha Rasic (Serbian Guard making all ‘experts’ go, Milos who?) = B.A.L.L.E.R (and superb in crunchtime) .
1)since there was NOT ONE serious expert questioning Milos’ value after that game , i can admit only ‘experts’ like you could write “Milos who?” (hey, at least you are original !!!)
2)your “BALLER & superb in crunchtime” Rasic had 0 points and 4 TO’s in 17 minutes….’Milos who’ was, well the usual Teodosic that everybody that even occasionally follows world bball knows….(i repeat, stop embarassing yourelf).

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@pupil….: i know only “BASKETBALL LEVEL”, don’t care about national leagues (spaniard ACB, greek A1, u.s. NBA, etc)and their particularities. And ,of course, real players (Drazen,MJ,Magic,dIRK,Pau,Kobe,Manu,Duncan,Scola,P.Pierce, etc) never-EVER had problems nowhere, especially at the biggest bball stages of em’ll (wORLD’S, Olympics).

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

by the way, i really like Rasic, i won’t call him “Rasic who?” after a bad game….

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

I actually luv how this troll digs up stuff i wrote 4 DAYS ago (but never commented on then) to try and discredit me. Hope he sleeps well at night, dreaming up ways to go on a bball site and play the big bully. I guess Rasic winning two games with clutch shooting and tieing one vs Germany with 2 clutch 3′s meant that Mr. Slowfoot Milos was his usual dominating self. Tonight the ‘usual self’ of Teodosic had this wonderful stat line before his ballsy clutch shot, 1-7 shooting from 3, 3 TO’s, a handful of botched passes and as usual, lackluster D for a grand total of 12 pts in 31 mins. But hey, i guess Euroleague MVP’s are held to a lower standard these days. 31% on three’s (in 5 games) sure is a great average for such a star. It’s ok, Troll, i’m glad i made ypur day once again.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Didn’t Paul Pierce crap the bed in the World Championships, and didn’t Duncan say he hated FIBA?

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Too bad Rasic averages half a point less than super Milo, with a similar avg. on TO’s and 59% on three’s(!), some of them hotly contested, all this in 2 more games played. Yes, Milos is having a fantastic WBC. Cudos to him. Oh boy, there’s a game on, no need to justify my opinion to an insulting troll on a website. You keep on doing what you do, Greek God of Bball.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Of course i could waste my time searching for nonsense things oh sage one has written over the years, but why bother… means nothing to me what you type (Latin or otherwise), try doing the same with my opinions. Better for your blood pressure, troll.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@all the kindergarden that so heavily underestimate the u.s league(NBA,my favorite by the way)….: the fact that we (NBA) have to promote during the regular season certain “easily edible” features of the game (jump high, run fast, drible like you are in a circus) in order to gain valuable market share and resources($$$) that help our favorite game expand around the world, doesn’t mean that we don’t know who is REALLY the best, who really merits. In the end, only the complete/great players (usually) will get our highest award/praise in a pure bball level(championship). Many Carters,Howards,Iversons&Starburys came and went the past decade (and Dominques and Kemps before them…) but in the end it was the Duncans,Manus,Billups,Sheeds,Gasols&Kobes (and Isiahs&Hakeems before them) that got our highest honor. Please don’t underestimate the pure bball knowledge/relevance of the u.s. league.

  • http://www.euroleague.net/competition/players/showplayer?clubcode=oly&pcode=AQU GIANNIS BOUROUSIS

@Dark….: this is sick, you are misprinting the FIBA stats that anybody can easily access anytime…!!!! This is ridiculuss, i give up, you win!!!!

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

The Worlds aren’t really that big. If they were the biggest stage, guys like Gasol/Ginobili/Dirk would be competing in them. The Worlds are sort of the third tier level of competition— Olympics being the first level, NBA being the second level.
The World Championship is sort of minor. I know a lot of European players get annoyed at that and will spit at you and say it’s bigger than the Olympics, but the stripped down rosters for every team says otherwise.
    Sorrrrrry.

  • Franko

Scola is top ten in the WORLD. the NBA is part of the world…

  • http://sfdjklf.com Jukai

Hey guys, remember when the Greece team who were in a position to win it all lost to a whiny Spain team w/o two of their starters who then went and lost to a Serbian team who wasn’t suppose to make the Final Four?
    I remember that! Yeahhhhhh!

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

i wish it was that simple, not that i watched 4 of Serbia’s 7 games, saw Rasic come up gold in the clutch multiple times and then checked the stats (misprint my a**) to reinforce my point like you did earlier, naah, can’t have been that.

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

    I <3 Greek Dude.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Jukai: ouch. Low blow, but then again, true.
