Nets/Nuggets Heating Up Carmelo Anthony Trade Talks (UPDATE)

Says here that New Jersey and Denver are negotiating to see if something can be worked out for the Melo man before the season begins. Though, of course, nothing is close to being finalized at the moment. Yahoo! reports: “Nothing is imminent in the next 24 hours, but Denver and New Jersey are having ongoing discussions centered on No. 3 overall pick Derrick Favors and future first-round picks going back to the Nuggets. The two teams are engaging third – and possibly even fourth teams – to complete what one front-office source described as a ‘very complicated’ deal. One league executive said the Nets believe they’re ‘getting there’ on a trade for Anthony. The Nets want to get a deal done before Anthony reports to training camp in Denver next week because league officials think the Nuggets will start working to convince him to stay. The Chicago Bulls and New York Knicks have been Anthony’s preferred contenders, but he’s grown more comfortable with the idea of signing an extension with the Nets, league sources said. Denver refuses to do a deal with the Bulls that doesn’t include center Joakim Noah, and so far Bulls officials have refused to put him into any deal.”

UPDATE: ESPN has more on the proposed trade(s): “Nuggets in ‘serious’ discussions on four-way trade w/New Jersey, Utah and Charlotte that would make Melo a Net. Proposed deal, according to sources, would bring Derrick Favors, Andrei Kirilenko and multiple first-rounders to DEN for Melo … Other contracts would surely be added to make such a deal work but current proposal also would send Devin Harris to CHA and Diaw to UTAH.”

he should just wait till the summer

  • cadmus

    go to the bulls!

  • Will

yes!! Trade him to the Nets. Haha. Melo is such an idiot! So whipped!

  • Love4Humanity

The current trade that’s been proposed will land Melo on a team that will be worse than the team he’s currently on. The Bobcats would get better. The Jazz would get better. The Nets will end up losing their point guard and have to substitute Farmar into the starting lineup (who’s not a starter). Melo should just wait until the summer if he wants to be on a better team.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Melo wants to be on the East Coast. Winning (this season) is not a priority

  • http://www.twitter.com/retepadam Peter Nygaard

Am I the only Nets fan who realizes that Carmelo will be a UFA at the end of this season?

I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.

Unless Prokhorov somehow finds a way to wow him to stay on a team with Jordan Farmar starting at PG, he’s hopping over the Hudson next year, and not to Brooklyn.

  • Will

no. trade him now. Im a huge Nuggets fan but he killing us with his antics and LaLa’s short leash. Go be in the spotlight and win NOTHING! Ill D-Favors and draft picks any day. We’ll have a nice young core and still probably make the playoffs. It’s not like we get out of the first round with Melo. Denver is a great up and coming city, if he doesn’t wanna be there, then we don’t want him. Enough of this. He went from being my favorite player to becoming Lebron 2.0. Can’t entirely blame though, out front office has been less than stellar. We were so close to beating the Lakers 2 years ago. We will have a better record than the Nets. Sorry for the rant but I have to get it off my chest.

  • The D Train

So Jersey loses Devin Harris and Favors? So is it just Melo, Brook Lopez, and the core of a team that won 12 games last year (minus their starting PG, of course)? Interesting to see if nbk is right.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Horrible Trade Proposal. Cha is the only winner out of this.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

So NJ would get Melo, Denver would get Derrick Favors and AK, Charlotte would get Devin Harris, and Utah gets Boris Diaw? Am I the only one who thinks the Jazz would be getting screwed in this deal?

  • Jer Boi

Ironically the Nets and Nuggets are my favorite teams but I don’t think NJ would do the trade if Melo doesn’t sign an extension. And the Nets have to somehow keep devin Harris. Shouldn’t do the trade if they lose him. Harris favors and Lopez is like the same if not better than melo and Lopez.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I was going to say, it’s not a horrible trade for Charlotte. If MJ manages to pull this off, he has vastly improved as a GM given his other recent decisions. I think Harris has learned enough and is humble enough to really make a difference with the Bobcats.
However, I don’t see the benefit for Melo in going to the Nets. Lopez is nice and Williams is cool, but without Favors or Harris they will suck pretty badly..

  • RobbieJay

instead of trying to trade him…why not make moves that would convince him to stay.? smh.

  • lucci

The trade is not going to happen if he doesnt sign an extension. Bottom line

  • http://Myspace Shanoooooo

Yea, jus wait til the summer and “Lebron” the Nuggets. Choose your own destination Melo.

  • slick ric

So he’s content with being a net. Hell, he might as well stay with the nuggets. I wonder if he knows they only won three games last year?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Yea he is pretty much going to worse situation bc they already gave up Courtney Lee and now D. Harris. That roster will have no backcourt depth at all besides Williams.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I think Melo would fit best in Milwaukee. I don’t know who they would trade though. Maybe Redd and Larry Sanders? Melo is never gonna sign an extension there though bc its obvious he only wants a move that will increase his starpower.

  • http://twincityslim@yahoo.com Jahi

    Go the Knicks!!

  • JD

If this deal goes through Melo wont have anyone to play with its getting rid of the rest of the good players

  • http://www.twitter.com/JoshElam JE

So they’re giving up the only talent they have for Carmelo? And Carmelo wants to leave one of the few teams with a chance to beat the Lakers for this?

  • Jose

HOLY crap im all excited..!!!! if this works then Mikhail Prokrov (idk if thats spelled right) is the ish!

  • hoodsnake

Jeez this is getting patheticm Whatever happened to honouring your word?

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

@Peter Nygaard: (I’m a Nets fan myself) the Nets will only do this trade if Melo signs an extension. If he declines, there will be no deal

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

Giving up that much talent + draft picks for melo is a bad move. Actually the Nuggets may be a better much better team in a year when they get an early first rounder to combine with what they have now.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Jazz have been lookn to dump aks huge contract for a couple years. It would free up more time for miles and millsap, and theyd save money. Melo, murph, brook, and…………….

  • BrandonH

If this does go down the Nets will be in still be in good shape. The only thing they lack is depth at point guard but there is no way they’ll be bad as last year

  • mubwar

are you guys forgetting about Troy Murphy’s solid performance last season…melo at the 3 spot, murphy at the 4 and Lopez at centre….nice front court…they’ll do much better then last but u know Melo is gonna end up with the Knicks and CP3 fallowing right after to compete with MY HEAT…

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

    Somebody wants Boris Diaw?! YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

If we only really have to give up Mr.Fatboi Swag Diaw/DJ Augustin for Devin Harris and Jarvais Hayes i will jizz on all of you.

  • dma

Doesn’t Anthony understand that if he heads east, he probably won’t be starting in the all-star game and lose out on some more money? The East is sick though – Howard, James, Bosh, Wade, Rose.

  • Red

As a Bulls fan I say, please trade him away to the Nets. :)

  • Red

I love the Bulls, trade him awayyy!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

yes!!! Hehateme, Bring back the Sonics!! Ive said it before, Move the OKC thunder to Charlette, merging them together keeping only the best players- That team will be knowen as the THUNDERCATS, and start anew in Seattle.. 15 east, 15 west.. BOOK IT!

  • http://slamonline.com walt williams

Lol @ BETCATS, I’d be reacting the exact same way if I was a cats supporter. Harris has a lot left in the tank and Diaw is starting to resemble one..SLAM!

  • Ronson

@will how can you be mad at him when the nuggets haven’t surrounded him with talent. It started with trading campy for nothing, then you have JR in the words of mike singletary”can’t win with’em can’t coach with’em” lol Melo hasn’t said anything publicly he’s just being smart by not signing the extension the core of the nuggets is old or injury prone. I don’t see melo wanting to play for avery Johnson.

  • Will

We only surrounded him with K-Mart(failure due to microsurgery), AI(failure cuz its AI), Chauncey to name a few. We never had a solid center but cmon we almost beat the Lakers in 2009. Our squad is loaded with talent. I’m mad because if he truly wants to win he should stay in Denver and force the FO to add one missing piece which will put us in the finals against the Heat?

    Starting 5
    Afflalo (for defense)
    Marc Gasol? Any true center

Maybe not the best starting 5 but easily the best bench

We are one piece away. NJ is not even close. He wants the spotlight. I question his winner’s mentality. He could be a superior defender. Even LBJ stepped it up last season on D. I truly believe his best chance to win a ring is in Denver. Plus next year with Kmarts contract expiring we will have cap relief. Seriously, the Nuggets are soo close. Barring injuries and cancer, we were doing even better in 2010 than 2009. Who knows how far we could have gone…

  • BostonBaller

news flash…Melo to Nets, Favors & Kirilenko & hi expiring contract to Denver etc etc etc

  • Jordan D

Melo, Lopez, and T.Williams, doesn’t sound like a bad nucleus to me. maybe this will be enough for cp3 to come to town when he is a fa

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

TWill, Morrow, Melo, Murphy, Lopez & Outlaw as 6th man…not too shaby!! Utah would be AWFULL ON DEFENSE WITH DIAW for AK47!

I don’t believe Carmelo Anthony will agree to an extension to play in New Jersey for the next two years with the likes of Jordan Farmar, Terrence Williams, Troy Murphy, and Brooks Lopez. Should the Nuggets continue to play hardball, then Carmelo will likely just report to Denver and play for the Nuggets this season, which will likely be his last – unless they win a championship next season. At the end of the day Carmelo Anthony is in the same boat this coming season as Nene (player option), K-Mart, JR Smith, Chauncey Billups (team option), and Coach Karl. Maybe, just maybe Denver shouldn’t have avoided the luxury tax the past two season AT ALL COST, while their window of opportunity to win a championship was open, but they did. Is it really any surprise Carmelo won’t agree to extend his contract in Denver? The truth is Denver fans and media should be placing the blame for Carmelo not wanting to re-sign in Denver squarely on the Kroenke family. That’s a fact jack.

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

@Will, yeah, cause Memphis is dying to give you Marc Gasol for nothing…lol, fool…that squad is fine but Gasol does not belong there.

  • Tony

I live in Utah and AK is losing a lot of fans, of all the players, he is probably disliked most.

  • dma

i don’t understand utah’s involvement in this. AK is expiring and Diaw sucks, except for team france this summer. He’s not even near a Sloan type of guy either.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Melo AND Jordan Farmar on the same team?!
It’s over for the rest of the league.

  • louisianimal

in case yall dont remember, the nuggets hav the leverage. if they trade him 2 the nets, then its cuz thats where they feel they can get the best deal

  • JTaylor21

This move makes no sense for anyone expect the nuggets. I would be ecstatic for Melo to play somewhere other than Den but to a team with only BLopez as a legitimate second weapon would not go anywhere, they most definitely would make the playoffs but would probably lose in the 1st or 2nd round. Too bad that the Knicks are run by morons because they would be the PERFECT team and city for Melo’s skills.

  • http://nicekicks.com meloman2.0

ughhh, The Nuggets are not contenders this year with (and especially without) melo. Kmart is out half the season ATLEAST, birdman is out for a while also… now they have ONE bigg man, whos also injury prone.
That being said, these deals dont make sense for Melo. As his biggest fan, i wanna see him win, and he’s not gunna do that with any of the teams hat have been discussed

  • Roger

Carmelo Anthony is being selfish. I thought him to be a better player than that. He is following in Lebron James’ footsteps. The money is tearing these talented dudes apart, man. I hope he does end up in New Jersey. Then he wold truly have to earn all that money but would probably come up short and not ever get a championship ring.

  • bnets

    Melo Baby!!! Knicks cryin again

  • str8 from samoa

why da f*** does he wana get traded fo? he shud just stay in nuggets coz thats his team.. like how AI was da man in sixers?

  • dma

firesale in Denver now right? Billups to Portland!

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

I very much look forward to Jerry Sloan becoming the anti-Latrell Sprewell and strangling Diaw. It will only take so long before it happens.

  • http://www.twitter.com/gerardhimself Gerard Himself

to anyone mocking the Nets: if Augustin is included and the starting 5 is this: Augustin, Williams, Anthony, Murphy and Lopez, with Farmar, Morrow and Outlaw coming off the bench, as fan I can only say: I like my team. But we’ll see what happens.

  • T-Money

I dont agree that the buffets didnt suerions him with quality players. Denver had one of the most talented 8-man rotation in the league.

  • snuff

    wait for summer.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

If he goes to the Nets he won’t be making it past the first round in the next 5 years.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

cosign Gerard… I like em’ too, not championship materal, but building in the right direction…

  • http://www.twitter.com/HurstySYD Hursty

Wow, this is great for the Bobcats if it goes through.
I don’t see anyone else getting better though.

  • http://dgcoursereview.com Bro D.

As a Bobcats fan, I’m not happy. I honestly think Diaw fits the team better than Harris will.

  • bobby

Plz trade the man to Nets and let him watch playoffs on widescreen. I guess he was tired of playoffs anyways thats why he pushed for a trade. His dream came true, he is going to be involved more into Championship battle, in elite or 2k11 :)

  • Kwame

i think the only loser will be melo and the nets. they will be a mediocre team. big trade for charlotte, denver getting favors and some nice picks. and utah is getting 9 mio off there books and under the luxuary tax…

  • Pingback: SLAM ONLINE | » Top 50: Brook Lopez, no. 33

From an “Xs and Os” perspective, I like this trade for all parties. Obviously, Denver’s future would look better post trade. Devin would take pressure and ball-handling responsibilities from Jax and Wallace in Charlotte. Diaw can become a glue guy for a team that needs glue (D-Will, Jefferson, and those young SGs should be leading the scoring). Finally, I really like the Nets after this deal. T-Will would do most of the ball-handling even if he starts at the 2. Jordan’s there for defense. Morrow and Murphy stretch the floor while Brook works the post. Of course, Melo would do whatever he wants to because honestly, that’s what he wants to do. And he wants to do it on the east coast. The nets could win 50 with that squad. Plus Mikhail and Jigga seem smart. They’d bring in more talent, maybe even D-Will next summer.

Sources tell me Carmelo will knix the deal. BOOK IT!

How do you like them Apples, Kroenke-Mart?

  • iLL wiLL

The croissant comment is pretty funny!

  • hammer

Melo 2 the nets @ the moment just doesn’t make sense. They lose harris. But next summer,if they do get melo, there gonna b gunnin 4 cp3. Conspiracy? Mayb. This is all lbj’s fault. Ha ha!

  • Red

Only reason I wouldn’t want Melo to the Nets is the new Russian guy who bought them for publicity rather then for an interest in Basketball.
