Shocker: Miami Heat Road Games Will Be Expensive to Attend

The NY Post is all up in arms about the Knicks, Nets (and, really, the rest of the League) raising ticket prices for when Miami’s rockstars roll through town: “What a LeCon job! The NBA calls it ‘variable pricing,’ but the Knicks and Nets have made it variable pricing on steroids. The Knicks and Nets didn’t get LeBron James but certainly are trying to profit from him. The two Garden games against the Miami Heat’s Dream Team have been marked up by the Knicks as much as three to four times normal ticket prices. The Nets also use ‘variable pricing’ and a team spokesman said the most popular games can be as much as three times the price of lower-end opponents at Newark’s Prudential Center. A 400-level Garden seat vs. Atlanta in November costs $34.50, according to TicketMaster. But the same 400-level seat for the Dec. 27 showdown vs. James’ Heat runs $129.50 — nearly four times the normal cost. The markup runs across the Garden. A lower-bowl, Section 95 seat for Knicks-Atlanta is priced at $110. But for the Heat game, the same seats costs $369.50. The extravagant markups also are in place for the lone visit by the world-champion Lakers Jan. 9 and the Celtics meetings. A Garden spokesman said the Knicks are experimenting with ‘variable pricing’ that became popular in the MLB recently. An NBA spokesman said the first NBA club to try it was the Heat last season with a ‘hot and hotter’ seat promotion … An NBA spokesman said the majority of NBA teams are now experimenting with ‘variable pricing’”.

“Adjustable-rate pricing” has a better ring to it, don’t you think so?

  • MikeC.

    This is Lebron’s fault.

No way you could have put the Lakers and the Celtics in the heading could you, Marcel? Fantastic work as always.

  • MikeC.

Actually, I have no problem at all with this. Paying a higher price for better products is how our economy works. The only way this ends in a true disaster is if teams raise the prices for premium teams, and those teams come to your town near the end of the season and their stars don’t play because they’re being rested for the playoffs.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

It’s sad that the true fans of the NBA cannot afford to go to these games. Those prices are ridiculous for anyone with a family.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

For once, I co-sign Kap. The NBA should also only allow a slight markup to these “premium” games. If I’m going to a Clippers game and know my teams going to get smashed by 25 against the Heat, Lakers or Celts, I shouldn’t have to pay 10 times the price to see it. It’s almost better just watching it from home.

Anyone want to form a lynching posse with me? Through a huge amount of bargaining by my mother in law, I have the opportunity to go to MSG to see Knicks-Griz in March. As a huge Knicks fan who has never been to MSG, or NY, I am obviously super amped for this once in a lifetime chance. My boss basically dropped a turd right into my face by saying she doesn’t think she can give me that time off since she always has that same week off (March break). I’m borderline homicidal over this. The seats are great seats too. They’re the seats that the team’s medical staff have reserved for their families. I’m soooooo pissed.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Yea I definitely get equal excitement watching it at Buffalo Wild Wings with some friends. It’s cheaper and a better view.

  • Hussman25

I fully believe it… Box seats in Philly were 2,000 and now have been bumped an extra 500 for Opening night vs The heat (just got a call from a good friend of mine wanting me to go in on it w/ him and a bunch of our friends)… Dont mind shelling out the cash, but Stern is gotta love the revenue this is gonna bring in to “strugling” teams!

You think thsis bad? Wait until the NBA League Pass prices come out. League Pass Broadband has already gone up, so I can only imagine how much LP will be this year, all because of the Miami Heat. If there is a lockout next summer, fans should be outraged.

  • hemlock09

I think this is great. This will keep prices low for families that just want to attend an NBA game and don’t really care who the competition is. The best way to view a basketball game now is on an HD set at home, not in person with people walking around. As someone who enjoys the occasional experience of attending a game but religiously watches great games on TV, I am totally on board. Let the people who want to see the Lakers subsidize my low ticket prices vs the exciting but underrated teams like the Clippers and Rockets.

  • JTaylor21

Say it ain’t so, not League Pass too. Just another sign of the apocalypse when league pass prices goes up.

  • The Lord of Nsam (formerly known as Fresh Prince)

@MikeC 1153: I can feel ur pain bro

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

^There’s a larger point which has zero to do with League Pass. I could care less if it goes up or not. I don’t pay for it, mainly because I don’t have to. But it is a big deal for those who do actually spend their money on it.

  • JTaylor21

DAMN someone got it like that, sh*t life must be swell.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    ^You have no idea…

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

My cable bill is $120. Suckers.

  • JTaylor21

Damn, somebody must be UP late at night.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

Meaning that I’ll be watching these games from the comfort of my own home. I’m sure people will pay for those tickets, but 4x is ridiculous.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

    Lol @ jtaylor, that’s the 3-in-1 deal… tax included

  • hoodsnake

The NBA : Where amazing happens.

  • RobbieJay

I’d rather stay home and watch the game from a good angle: the TV angle. holla.

  • tommy

imagine how expensive it will be if miami and the knicks will meet in the first round of the playoffs.
possibly first seed for miami and eighth seed for the knicks. im from germany and i always thought it would be too expensive to travel to the us for attending a nba game but maybe i should reconsider it and save money for the game ticke instead of the flight ticket :)

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

Considering LP went up like 30 bucks, I couldn’t imagine what the Blazers/Heat game I’m looking at will cost.
Forget it, I’m taking my talents to my couch.

  • http://thephotoriot.com davidR

warriors weren’t even offering to sell single game tickets to the heat game. in order to attend the game for face value, you had to purchase a minimum 4pack. not bad for $55 each game (decent upper deck seats), but still.

  • Jose

Yea, it was like close to $200 her in PHX for nose bleed seats…NOSE BLEED SEATS…

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out @Bryan Crawford.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

cosign 11:58 Kap.. I go to about 3-4 games per season and share other tix with friends and family.. Id rather spend $12 for a twelve pack of beer instead buy 1 at a time for $8 each… and since when do hotdogs cost $5 each…?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

I’ve heard a beer at M.S.G. will run you about $15, any truth to this Knicks fans??

  • The Philosopher

    That’s right my friends.
To catch a glimpse of The King and his Men while they plunder AND annihilate the land (NBA teams) while confiscating the booty, booty (money) is to be generously distributed.
I caught your comment on the last thread.
Funny how everyone has a different vision of things, right? And, I agree with you on certain points.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

I’m not a Knick fan, but I am a New Yorker. Beer prices run for around $9.

  • danmcdirty

people should boycott these games for one season to “educate” whoever decided to exploit nba fans to this extent. raising the prices this way is just not right

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Thanks Starship, was just a rumor I heard out here (west coast) Also heard pack of cigarettes is now $10.. Out here they’re running about $7.50..

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

My mistake SPACESHIP, didnt mean to get your name wrong.^

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Uh, phil, jumpmans not here, u ok? And 3x-4x? Thats crazy, I understand charging a lil more but thats insane. David stern is such a liar about the league losing money. Well, not totally, how much did the league waste on those sexdoll balls?

  • The Philosopher

    @Tarzan Cooper:
    Yes, I am better now.
I just learned that you… still love me. lol
Anyways, I agree with you on the money. It is suspect.
And, if one runs in the same circle as Mr. Stern runs in… they have to lie.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

‘LeCon’ job????? really yall got too much hate in your blood….this is called capitalism people, SUPPLY AND DEMAND, this is 2010 get with or or get rolled over plz

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

So how much is it for a Nets game when they can only just past 10 wins a season? $1?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Damn.. BETCATS got his name mentioned in trashtalk #142.. Ive been down since day 1.. (Not taking away from BET by any means) never had a letter posted, whatdaigoddado??

  • barnabusb

Like danmcdirty said, the best way to send a message to the league is by not going to the games. The cheap ones or the expensive ones. 4x markup is ridiculous.

  • hammer

I’ve been 2 nba gms and there is nothin like going w/family and friends 2 experience it live. My kids luv going 2 blazer gms. I hope my blazers don’t experience w/this variable pricing crap tho. But @ the same time who couldn’t understand nba’s position on this right? C.R.E.A.M.

  • rav

my soccer team liverpool after the worst season in over 10 years jacked up prices by 12% and i thought that was a joke but this is far far worse. the way the nba is you’d need to be earning 6 figures to justify taking your families to games on a semi-regular basis nowadays, and the nba dont seem to realise that they are effectively killing off a future generation of nba fans, as lets face it hd tv is great but nothing beats going to the games, and i hope the knicks fans boycott a good few games this year – had they reduced the $110 tickets for normal games to say $70 for most games i would be ok but they are taking the mick bigtime here and they’re basically strangling the golden goose right now jacking up prices whilst we are all coming out of recession

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

cosign Hammer… I love going to a few per year, dont go to nearly as many as I did as a kid, now that im paying my own way.. Great experience for kids, my 9 year old daughter loves to go.. (Her favorite players are T. Outlaw and Oden)..

  • hammer

@bossterry. Sucks that outlaw’s not there no more right? My oldest son is 9 as well. His 2 fav r oden and fernandez. And it sucks that rudy is a malcontent right now. Hopefully he gets his tude str8

  • Sean

You think this is bad have any of you tried to get tickets to a football game recently? Those prices are a joke, and I was only trying to see a Bears-Redskins game… nothing exactly marquee about that match-up right? It’s good ole economics for people, you watch and see that when these superteams roll into whatever cities they are going to sell out regardless. People that have the discretionary income are going to shell out the dough, because they can. For those of us who cannot… at least we’ve got HDTV.
