The Carmelo-to-New Jersey Trade: ‘Dead’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The Nets and Nuggets have reportedly been unable to reach an agreement when it comes to Carmelo Anthony, so the proposed (and complex) trade is off the table — for now.

‘Melo will remain in Denver — no one can predict for how long — and according to various media reports, it’s because the Nuggets simply couldn’t bring themselves to pull the trigger.

From the NY Post:

Exasperated by the machinations of an inexperienced Denver front office that wanted this, tried that and attempted to expand the parameters of a trade for superstar Carmelo Anthony, the Nets finally called off the complicated four-team swap meet yesterday, several hours after imposing a deadline on the deal. The teams always can talk again about a deal until the February deadline. “Deal is dead,” a Nets official said, adding that the team is “concentrating on our guys.”

So what once looked like a promising deal that would bring Anthony’s much-desired star power to the Nets — at a cost of rookie stud Derrick Favors, young veteran Devin Harris, Quinton Ross and two future No. 1 picks — died after being strung out by inactivity in Denver, where they were against dealing Anthony all along … Executives from teams that were both in discussions or trying to get in discussions, criticized the handling of the matter by the Nuggets’ front office that has Masai Ujiri as general manager for less than a month. One such executive cited “too many voices, a rookie GM, an unpolished [management team] and the fear of moving their superstar as the first move” as the reasons the deal didn’t go through.

The Carmelo Anthony saga is obviously far from over. The Nuggets will continue to sell him on signing that $65 million extension, but you can be sure that we’ll be going through this again as the trade deadline approaches should he refuse to commit.

With the Nets out of the picture, prepare yourselves for months of renewed Carmelo-to-the-Knicks rumors.

He’s not gonna get traded to anyone but the Knicks cause thats the only team he will re-up with after this season. Other than that this season will be his fare-well tour from Denver.

Am I missing something where is the criticism about how Melo is conducting himself during this whole process or is that reserved for the king

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Orlando! Wake up! Make a late push for Melo!

  • JayBo

WoooooooHoooooooo. Melo is now on his way to being a Knickerbocker. Melo + Amar’e + CP3? = gold.

  • Smack

    Melo to the Knickerbockers baby!

  • Groves

my magic, go get cp3 and melo and pair with howard. That would f**k up the heat, i love the heat, but shit melo dwight cp3 would own

  • cadmus

melo should go to a team that can provide him the best cast to chase that elusive title. come on. go to the bulls.

orlando will also be a good destination.

dwight and melo, can some one dig that??

  • JoeMaMa

@Caboose: I hear you, but I think he’s set on a bigger market to help with his other ambitions. Too bad, too, because Orlando could give alot to get him (including Rashard, Vince, Jameer, Bass, picks) and be a top 3 team in the league.

  • RobbieJay

@ Royal yes yay. dont like it?

  • http://www.acb.com Alan

Of course is dead. Nobody wants to go to hell….

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

LOL just seems like there are other words out there that you could have used Robbie……

Damn, nice going Denver…firing your front office in a crucial year for Melo’…which leads to him wanting to get out even sooner…so that your new unexperienced front office is being confronted with “the” decision for the franchise’ future !
Maybe broadcast it on ESPN to get some money out of it :-)

  • the downtown brown clown

I’d love to see Melo go to the Knicks, but it’d be best if he’s in Orlando… that would definitely kick Miami’s a**… hahahahaha!

I actually liked Melo at the Nets, they have all the pieces barring a go to guy. However, he should just wait until the end of the season and sign as a free agent.

In a lot of ways, this is like the 5 stages of dying for the Nuggets regarding Carmelo Anthony: 1. DENIAL – No way Carmelo leaves that money on the table. He loves Denver. He loves how we avoid luxury tax at all cost. 2. ANGER – We are only going to trade Carmelo on our terms for what we want. Got it Team Carmelo?! The last team we will trade Carmelo to is the Knicks because that’s who he wants to dump us for and we think those mean Knickerbockers tampered via the back-channels!!! 3. BARGAINING – Carmelo you are going to LOVE the Nets, pretty please with sugar on top sign off on that extension. 4. DEPRESSION – It’s just not fair. New York isn’t a better city than Denver! If Carmelo was born in Denver and in a Denver state of mind, then maybe Carmelo would’ve gotten married in Denver, and signed our extension on the table to be a Nuggie for life… *sniff sniff* 5. ACCEPTANCE – Ok New York, we’ll take Curry’s expiring contract and Chandler and that first round pick in 2014. Sure beats getting nothing.

  • RobbieJay

@ Royal haha your probaly right..it was the first one tht came to mind.

  • Cizzo

They better do something besides all that unproductive negoiating or they will be ass out!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Melo to Knicks would be super-duper!!

  • http://slamonline.com nikehead23

denver should just trade him, why risk getting nothing in return? i doubt the nuggets will get as far as they did in 09 …hes not re signing with them

  • http://itsyaboyjlass@hotmail.com imbetterthanyou

Really, so melo isnt going to back a trade where he would go play with the mighty brook lopez, and AK-47??
Are we really wanting him to team up with rose, booz, korver, and noah and thats instantly better than the miami heat… C’mon Man!!!!!!!
really, the only way melo can contend for a chip (yea other than stay with the 3rd best team in the west) is to go to a team like orlando… they have the talent that would mesh well, or dallas they also have enough talen to be able to contend. but yall want him to go play with amare, and felton, and gal-isorry? really, Im a laker fan and would love to have melo for maybe artest, odom, and pick. but im realistic to know that denver isnt gonna trade him to someone where he can kill them all year, so they are gonna send him to a SCRUB team, jersey, new york, timberwolves etc… butthey cant cause melo has to agree to the ext…. but he wont do that to go to any old team…

so logic would tell you what, maybe hes not going anywhere!!!

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

@ Joemama, if the Magic could pull of a blockbuster, I’d love it: Rashard, Vince, Jameer, Bass, and a 1st rounder for Melo, Billups, and Martin…

  • http://google c_cantrell

would really like to see him with the magic or the bulls.. would never watch him anymore if he played for the nets lol

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Melo on the Knicks or Bulls and especially Magic is his best options. BOOK IT!!

  • dfizz

Man Knicks fans really need this to go thru. First they were all over the net proclaiming LeBron to the Knicks, but now that thats over they just have to keep hoping something miraculous will happen to them.

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Will be interesting and could possibly happen, Melo going to the Magic! That will make it very interesting. But then LeBron will call Anthony to tell him to stay out West like he did with Chris Paul.

  • MikeC.

@BossTerry – Right on! Neat-o gang! Super duper!

  • Yesse

Hope he could still get to the Knicks.

  • Anon e Mouse

@ Mvp23100 OK, since no one else has, I’ll put you out of your misery. You are missing a crystal ball. Oh, and possibly a brain.

  • Anon e Mouse

@ IAMORANGE4EVER – nice analogy! I think the Nuggets have wandered randomly through stages 1-4 a few times already since this saga started. Just waiting for stage 5…

  • dNYCe

Ok guys, I’m all for Melo in a NY jersey, but didn’t we all think LeBomb was coming too. I’m not counting my chips til I leave the table.
