Barkley on LeBron: ‘Just When You Think it Couldn’t Get Any Stupider’

Not too shockingly, Sir Charles — who never shies away from taking shots at ‘Bron ‘Bron — jumped all over him for his comments about race playing a role in the post-”Decision” backlash. SRI has the quotes from Barkley’s sports radio appearance: “On LeBron talking about race being an issue in the criticism he’s received: ‘It’s like watching a movie. Just when you think it couldn’t get any stupider, it gets more stupid.’ On LeBron continuing to make bad decisions: ‘Sometimes you just say he’s making bad decisions and you’re like okay, he’s gonna get it together. Then he makes more bad decisions. The thing that’s interesting about LeBron, I don’t think Magic, Michael, and myself, we said we wouldn’t have did it. That’s not a criticism. We were asked a question. I don’t want to play with Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, or Michael, I want to beat them. That’s strictly basketball. The only criticism I’ve heard about LeBron and it was my biggest criticism, that decision thing was just stupid. It was stupid. The second thing when they all came out there dancing around on stage, that was silly. That’s the only thing I’ve heard LeBron get criticized about. That has nothing to do with race. That’s what makes this last thing so stupid. That’s stupid. The only criticism of LeBron has been the decision and the one hour of our life that we can’t have back. And ESPN, oh my God. Oh my God. To go down to training camp and report everyday is one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever seen. I’m watching yesterday and one of the guys actually said LeBron looked fierce in practice. I’m like fierce in practice? What the hell does that mean? He was fierce in the second day of training camp. You’re like come on man, he really didn’t say that did he. This summer with LeBron and all the stuff that went on is like a bad movie. You just can’t make this stuff up.’”

    Barkley wish he were Lebron

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’m sure the first opportunity that Charles gets to speak with Lebron after a Heat game on Inside the NBA, Charles will be a p*ssy and not speak so freely. Book that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ niQ

    What a grumpy old man.

  • vtrobot

amen, charles. ‘bron is definitely going to be playing mad until at least about march.

  • http://www.edthesportsfan.com Ed The Sports Fan

Epic rant by Charles Barkley, in which I actually agree with almost everything he says. ESPN deserves some criticism of how they’ve singled out “the race question” and the week-long coverage of training camp. The race question was supremely blown out of context and I personally could care less about NBA training camp. LeBron is still that dude, and I admire the way the man has defied any previous expectation of what an NBA superstar should do. Barkley disagrees, and that’s okay too.

  • http://www.hoopsvibe.com/features/overdribbling chiqo

i can’t imagine there will be an opportunity for barkley to speak with him. lebron’s not going to agree to that.

  • delonte

    charles is right.

lebron is obsessed with himself… and espn is obsessed with lebron. its nauseating

  • Savage Dragon

That’s the f**king truth. Ain’t nobody mad at Lebron cuz he’s black, it’s just the fact that he did the decision and pretty much has been showing his d**che personality more than he ever has before.

To be honest, most athletes/celebrities are dicks in real life but most of them are pretty good at hiding it(lebron was an expert until this summer) but now he’s realizing that not as many people like him as he’s used to and he’s looking for every reason to blame anyone but himself.

He’s like that Hot crazy chick you used to f**k wit, love the way she looks, but after a while you don’t wanna deal wit her as much cuz her personality is shit. As soon as you tell her, she’s blaming you and everybody for being jealous/haters/anything as long as she’s not the reason why she don’t have anybody that wants to spend time with her.

I love Charles! Everybody else is SCARED 2 make comments about Queen James!!!! He just proved that U CAN’T build a team around him! He had 2 go 2 DWades team!!! But everybody forgets who tha champs r!! LAKESHOW baby!

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Barkley needs 2 moove on, his time is over, now it’s The King’s time, like it or not. Barkley is jealous that LBJ will do what he couldn’t, win a ring. Barkley the biggest looser in the HOF. LONG… LIVE… THE KING!

  • Mark Scott

Charles is speaking the truth as he sees it. I happen to agree. He is not a suck-up, which is partly his charm.

LeBron’s marketing team messed up monumentally. They took a hero and made him in to a villain. It is a fact that is has happened. LeBron should simply play basketball and stay away from all the attempts to misdirect from the real issues. Mark Scott also thinks LeBron should stop talking in the third person, it reinforces his arrogant image….

  • LeBron de Con

Charles is right. LeBron poo-pooed on himself this summer and now he is looking for excuses. Man up!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

before this gets blown out of proportion lets take a few notes – Magic the guy who said he “would do this” said he would have stayed in college another year if the team that drafted him wasn’t going to be competitive. And Barkley does have a book out “who’s afraid of a large black man?” which is not in response to a question about race.

Barkley has alot of good points, this whole summer has been one dumb move after another by Lebron and his people but Charles has been dogginng Bron since the very beginning. Go have another glass of Johnny Walker round mound.

  • Noel

@ Eboy I’d bet on Chuck getting fired before he dials it back lol

  • knickerbocker77

so according to Myles Brown, Charles is a self-loathing black man? riiight…

Well, one thing we know for sure is that Sir Charles is not one to mince words. He really does not give a damn.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

cosign Tarzan – Charles Barkley has no room to say a damn word.

  • JTaylor21

Out of anybody to criticize someone else it’s Charles “I going to get dome” Barkley that decides to open up his hamburger stuffing mouth. I like dude a lot but he’s sounding more and more like a bitter old man that’s mad he’s no longer in the spotlight. He was praised and loved as a player because he spoke his mind and never bit his tongue for no one but when bron does the same thing he has a problem with it. Ain’t that a BI*CH. MJ, Magic, Bird, and Barkley your time is up, just shut up and go play golf, chase h**kers, and gamble your money away and let today players do as they fit, they are GROWN A** men like y’all. How come we never heard anything about what Doc Rivers and Clyde Drexler had to say about Bron? It’s because the media and moronic fans would rather cover a negative story than a positive one.

  • http://thekobebeef.wordpress.com LDR4

Charles may be wrong, but I doubt it. The entire LeBron circus deserves a Razzie Award. Thank goodness that Charles is unafraid to speak his mind at times. The sad part about all of this is how we are eating it up daily. Why else would ESPN cover the Heat’s camp so closely. I bet that if the second coming occurred right now no one would notice or they would ask Christ if he came back to play for Miami.

  • T-Money

There you go again, Myles. Talking about racism when the discussion and Bron’s comments where about racial connotations. / Chuck is entitled to his opinion but at some point, you have to let it go. He already went over the line by calling them punks and had to apologize personally to Pat Riley for it. / I also love the fact that Bron didn’t go back on his words yesterday with the press. He’s starting to get it. They’ll criticize you regardless and you’re too big for the media to hurt you as long as you’re playing at that level. So speak your mind.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

I think we’ve all made our comments on the race part of this story so I’m not going to talk about it. But I will say that I agree with Charles and the other commentors that mentioned it…ESPN is just ridiculous. They’re so obsessed with creating drama and creating a story that the actual sports part gets lost. Outside of the 30 for 30 series ESPN has just missed the target on everything they’ve tried lately.

  • JTaylor21

Right on Money, people hate Ochocino and TO’s guts and those guys have never even committed a major traffic violation, that’s why Bron from now on should always say what’s on his mind and forget about whether people like him or not. They hated him when he never said anything “unpolitical”, so it doesn’t matter. The dude gave 3 million dollars to a great organization and spoke his mind on what so many people like to sweep under the rug and act like it doesn’t exist. Do you what you feel is right for you because at the end of the day it’s every man for themselves.

  • Jer Dawg

Charles is subtle, isn’t he? Media is just sticking a microphone in his grill because they know he’s good for a soundbite. So, everyone saying Charles is speaking his mind, or he’s just grumpy, ect… WE, the fans, are just building up the hysteria! It’s still the owner’s pimping the kids. From NFL wanting to increase games and NBA posturing for new salary structure, Jesse Jackson playing race card, ect… It’s just crazy.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Co-sign Tarzan….how quickly people forget about another person’s transgressions when that particular person who throws around the criticism hasn’t been relevant in a decade or more.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

And if you must monitor me, let’s just both be honest and acknowledge that while Bron didn’t overtly blame racisim outright for the backlash, by saying that racism is “always a factor” he’s indirectly claiming that some racism occured. And even if he didn’t say racism was the sole factor, in comparison to the half a**ed acknowledgement that they mishandled the entire ordeal, the willingness with which hey discussed race makes it look like a deflection of responsibility rather than an acknowledgement of such. If they can’t discuss it extensively and put things in their proper context then they’re the ones who’ll have to deal with misinterpretations.

  • Matty

The thing that makes Charles different and Karl Malone different is that they joined those teams in the twilight of their careers. If Bron had only two or three more years left before retirement, cool. I doubt Chuck would have said anything. But LBJ is in his prime and chose to saddle up with Wade and Bosh instead of trying to beat them.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Also, it’s funny that Charles tries to include himself in the same breath as guys like Larry, Magic and Mike. He couldn’t even sniff their sh*t as players and as a friend in the real world, Charles is the butt (not a pun)of Michael’s joke’s on the regular cause he’s always been considered “the funny, fat kid” to him and Mike’s inner cirlce. He’s like the black Jonah Hill!

Just make sure that if Charles is eventually fired, he’s replaced with Sheed. They’re not always right, but people who aren’t afraid to speak the truth are so rare these days. Funny how overblown LBJ’s response has become. I think him stating that race always plays at least some part into our entire country’s view of someone famous, was interpreted by many as him saying that it’s always present in every person’s opinion. Everyone who’s still crying about ‘Bron also doesn’t like how it makes it seem like he’s making an excuse and isn’t taking more responsibility for how lame his show was and how Cleveland could have been treated with more respect. LBJ didn’t say anything untrue. If he’s stated it a little differently, there might not have been 500 comments on the topic yesterday. Peace.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Ah, the psychologist is IN.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

The thing I find the most interesting about these comments is that if Charles were wrong or the there wasn’t such a strong degree of truth to his words, I doubt that their’d be such scathing comments towards him. If Charles said Lbj wears women’s clothing, the responses wouldn’t be so strong.

  • hammer

Its funny and amusing 2 me how the same people that defend “LeBlowJob” by sayin “Well all he did was answer a question”,can’t man up and say the same thing 4 sir charles. Look up the interview. He was asked the question. It’s very hypocritical by them people. Yes lbj answered a question, but it was the wrong answer. Blame urself buddy. Stop placing the blame on every1 but u. But he 2 arrogant 4 that so I don’t expect he will. Or break it down like this: We only talkin bout how “race played a role” n the backlash of lbj is cuz of his own actions n the 1st place! His 1hr special specifically. Not the fact that he left the cavs, but HOW he left the cavs. ALL the negativity surrounding lbj now is cuz HE PUT HIMSELF n this position 2 begin with. And 4 the record,I DO think he is getting way 2 much backlash than he deserves. No doubt. I used 2 like lbj during his 1st 2-3 seasons. I even went out and bought his cavs jersey. I still have it as a matter of fact. But then his ego surfaced along w/his prancing and dancing and pre game antics and arrogance and that was it 4 me. Haven’t worn it since. Him going 2 the heat, didn’t make me hate him more or even start 2 like him again. My feelings remain the same towards him. I hope that this experience humbles him. A LOT. Cuz that what he needs 2 do

  • vtrobot

@ eboy: looking at charles’ career stats, gold medals, MVP, NBA rankings, etc., I’d say that Jonah Hill should be winning a bunch of Oscars soon. @ JTaylor21: i know the topic was beat to death yesterday, but i do agree that race has to do with why big ben isn’t on that most hated list. what white ahtletes, who haven’t committed any crimes, belong on the list before TO and Ochocinco?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

That’s false, Jay. If Charles had a huge moral standard, then he can speak on Lebron’s shortcomings as if he had a perfect public and personal lifestyle. He has neither, so he has no place throwing under people under the morality bus.

  • Mo

I like Barkley and all because I find him funny and he speaks his mind. But now I’m getting tired of him always commenting on whatever LBJ says or does. Dam, don’t you got your own life to live? Why is he worrried about every little thing that’s going on with another man? Move on Chuck and let Bron do him or simply get some business of your own. You sound like the “Mad Rapper” with all the complaining about ESPN.

I find it hilarious how the former “legends” of the league keep saying stuff about LeBron. They really need to find any way to be relevant anymore. Barkley gets enough time on TNT each week during the season. Maybe he wants the FAT TRACKER back? Sorry Charles, like LeBron, I don’t see your ring. Maybe you should have taken the LeBron approach and teamed up with someone? I guess Mikey handed it to you good though in the finals, but you can rest your head at night saying that you were “competitive.” Your RIGHT Chuck you were “competitive” but you never won.

He jumps behind that he was “asked a question.” Well Chuck, did you see the question that was poised to LeBron? He was asked a question too.

I am not a LeBron lover by any means, but I grow tired of the constant banter from these old school players. I mean sh*t your not in the league anymore, no one cares what you think anymore except for the media who will jump at anything for a story (see this article).

You know what chuck go back to making right guard commercials and not “team-up” with Dwade to make a buck.

Hammer, FALSE because bron answered a question, he never attacked or talk sh*t about anyone like Chuck did. Chuck has been talking ish since bron left to the heat like he’s envious that nobody cared when his fat a** hoped on the houston train to get a ring. Also he’s talking like he was the model citizen of the league when he played, please dude behaved worse than Lidnsay Lohan would in Columbia. All these old retired players are sound bitter day by day, just stay out the spotlight and stop yapping y’all mouths and let today’s players get their shine.

  • http://Www.slamonline.com Myles Brown

You’ll be doing this all year, I’ve accepted as much. But let’s get one thing clear, Clifford. If someone expresses their opinion on a topic in an acceptable manner (I.e. Clearly, concisely and not calling someone a p*ssy) then they no more a “master of morality” than you are for casting aspersions on anyone who dares to disagree with your opinion on your favorite team. If you’re going to tell anyone to get over it that means you have to be able to do so yourself.

Plus Chuck and those old morons are always talking about how they wanted to beat their peers not join them, OLDIE PLEASE, you guys didn’t need each others help because you already had HOFs on your teams. What the hell did MJ accomplish by himself before Pip evolved, NOTHING he was getting he a** handed to him by the pistons year after year, did the Lakers win a chip after Kareem retired NO, and Barkley fat a** never even made it to the finals by himself unlike Bron who took a team with the likes of ESnow and Ira Newboy to the finals. Y’all old players are more annoying than those small a** dogs.

  • karma89

LOL the same 4 clowns on this site (eboy, JTaylor, Tarzan) defending Lebron no matter what he does, how stupid he sounds, or how poorly he plays. Get your head out of his backside fellas and learn that you can criticize a player when he becomes too consumed with his own ego and loses awareness of the world around him. Lebron has been like that since about his first year, but what’s sad is that it took people till the Decision to realize it. That’s what is frustrating. Well, that, and the same 4 people defending his every action. Bunch of d**k riders in here…the dude’s an uneducated clown who hired his friends for business. Get over it.

  • karma89

“Barkley fat a** never even made it to the finals by himself ”

Barkley made it to the Finals in 93 young one.

You should not claim knowledge on a public forum where older dudes who actually know the game’s history can lay waste to your comments. You must be a casual fan.

Cats complain about people reading implications into their words, then do the same with other folks.
Let’s just have an even playing field.
If we took Lebron’s answer to a direct question as a cop out and an attempt to “play the race card” (shudders) because it left too much room for other people to read more into his words then I would hope that all of us welcome that same sort of scrutiny on our own words.
    Otherwise, it smells like hypocrisy.
He said what he said. He didn’t say what he didn’t say. If we’re going to play the implication game, then fine, let’s play it.
Let’s play it all the time.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

Then who has a great moral standing publicly to critize Lebron let it be true or not? I only respect your opinion becasue your the only dude I know that has stood with the Heat before all of this.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Oh, and NBK already pointed the hypocrisy in including Magic in the comment since he was prepared to holdout rather than go to Chicago.
And several players have said that Bird would have considered bolting if things went south.
We know Charles behaved like a maniac until he got traded to Phoenix, then was willing to jump ship to link up with Dream in Houston, before contemplating a comeback on Jordan’s coattails in Washington.
The only won who can really talk trash is Jordan. He did stick it out and he never asked for a trade.
Then again, the organization got him Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant.

Bsides, what did sir charles say that WASN’T tru? It was a stupid decision 2 do a 1hr special when EVERY1 and their pet dog knew the possible ramifications that could come out of it. I don’t think any1 expected 4 it 2 b this bad,but we ALL knew it would b bad. And if we all knew this lbj shoulda known it. As well as his pr staff. R they that f****n naïve? N this day and age!? I think people who defend Lebron don’t realize that people are not hating on Lebron cause he went to the Heat, but the way he carries himself, and his obliviousness to how stupid he looks/sounds more often than not in regards to this situation. From the 3rd person talking, to actually doing the Decision, to coming out on stage, to playing the race card, the dude is a walking sign of idiocy.

Too bad. Cleveland is still the poorest big city in America, and his Dan Gilbert’s punk ass is really pissed that he didn’t get a chance to sell the team while it had its biggest cash cow still attached to it.

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

I like Chuck – I don’t always agree with what he says or does, but at least he speaks his mind. He’s just as honest when talking about his own stupidity (e.g. drunk driving) or his own personal regrets (e.g. spitting on that girl). Regardless of what or who the topic is, he’s genuine. That’s why I respect what he says. I like how he says that he wasn’t criticizing LeBron by saying he would not have made the same decision, but only in the production of the Decision itself and how he went up on stage dancing around. I agree with him that LeBron brought this backlash upon himself by his actions, but I don’t agree that race had no part in it. Race was not a main driver, but for anybody to claim that race had absolutely nothing to do with it, then to me – that’s stupid.

  • Martey

Something happens…Find Barkley to comment…Tell everyone what Barkley said…Everyone comment…Repeat next time something happens.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

So, in your opinion, the only acceptable answer from Lebron to the direct question was what?
“Race had nothing to do with whatsoever and it’s insulting to the people of Cleveland to even discuss it?”

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Charles called it a “punk move.”
He backtracking like a motha right now.

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

It’s very hard to believe that it had something to do with race as far as people that love the game are concerned. Outside of that, if they had something racially charged to say,I’m sure Lebron wasn’t the first black person that spoke disrespectfully in a racial way towards. As far Chuck, I’m sure we can all can go back to a quote or action that has had all of us cheering him on, or nodding in agreeance. So other than Eboy, to flip on him because the subject is Lebron is in-consistent.

Considering that he’s been scrutinized this entire summer, would it not have been smarter for him to just not address the issue? You don’t have to answer every question that’s asked to you. Furthermore, if he and his team really believe that race played ANY factor in the backlash he received, then he’s more dumber than I thought he was.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Oh, and y’all should check out Adande’s column on ESPN. We don’t agree on everything, but he makes points about the issue that should be acknowledged.

The good thing about Barkley is that he speaks his mind whether its offensive to all the Lebron-loving folk out here or the world. You can criticize him for his comments and opinions and you can talk about his life choices or his ‘need for attention’ but he isn’t trying to be a role model. He is just speaking his mind, something that many of us are unable or afraid to do and I respect that. The man has a few points however much you feel offended that he is putting down “The King”. The ESPN coverage is insane for a team that has not won anything yet. Did the Bulls/Lakers get this coverage after their three-peats? At least they had proved something.

Charles Barkley Spat on a little girls face when he was Bron’s age. Tru Dat

  • JTaylor21

You people do known that Barkley played on a great PHX teams with one of the BEST PGs of all-time, so you guys should have y’all facts together before you start attacking me. So he didn’t do it by himself while Bron literally and figuratively carried probably one of the least talented playoff teams of all-time to the finals. @karma, yes he has to answer questions like that because it pertains to something that is STILL prevalent today in America and that people try to sweep under the rug. Remember how Bron was criticized for never standing up for anything or for being political correct all the time but now he’s doing that everyone and they mama is furious at him for that. Like I said dude can’t convince people to like him either way so he should just take on the Darth Vader persona and EMBRACE the hate.

  • VisionofGreatness

What seems to get lost in this is that Charles isn’t calling people to come to his house so that he can comment on LeBron. These guys are asked questions and they answer them. I like LeBron. He’s a great basketball player and he seems to be a cool guy (no one knows because we’re not around him every day). But he has yet to accept responsibility for how he mishandled the summer’s events. What this stems from is the fact that he didn’t call Dan Gilbert or anyone in the Cavs organization and tell them that he was leaving. If he had done that, it would have softened the blow. There would have been no letter from Gilbert. No need to ask about a race factor. Charles doesn’t need any more spotlight so that’s not why he answers these questions. He’s on TV every week so he gets enough spotlight. And let’s be honest, with all the money he has, he could have just given $3 million to the Boys and Girls Club without the TV special.
@karma After Game 6 against the Suns this past season, Charles changed his stance a little on Kobe. With all those ridiculous shots he hit, he said only one other person in the history of the game could it those…MJ. So unless he thinks LeBron is better than MJ, I think he believes Kobe is still the man.

  • JTaylor21

@Nick, I never remembered seeing any pictures or hearing in the news of Bron, Riley, and DWade storming ESPN HQs, put guns to the head of ESPN’s staff and forcing them to follow and report on the Heat’s every move. ESPN has always done things on their own without outside forces, so to try and put it on the heat for all the press they are getting is moronic. The same people that are pouting about Bron and all the coverage the Heat are getting are the same ones that will be glued to their couches like a fat kid whenever the Heat are on TV. I despise the Lakers but I still watch them religiously and stop whatever it is that I’m doing because I’m a fan of NBA basketball first and foremost.

  • karma89

@ JTaylor – What “BEST PGs of all-time” are you talking about??? it was Kevin Johnson…he’s not even in the hall of fame. Barkley was the season MVP. As for the Cavs in the 2007 Finals…that was possibly one of the weakest years in basketball in terms of Eastern dominance…the only team that was of any good was Detroit, and they were on their way to breaking up so no, I don’t give Lebron credit, do you know why? Because its much easier to win an a weak conference with lesser competition. That Cavs team sucked, and they proved it by getting swept in the Finals against a true team from the West. And I hate on Lebron because race has nothing to do with this….race is not the reason why people hate on him now, its because he handled it very poorly.

  • BostonBaller

I don’t believe Barkley, MJ or Magic are trying to stay relevant…they are still relevant but in different ways. Charles is one of the most watched guys on sports, MJ still sells more sneakers than most guys playing today and is an owner, Magic owns everything. We blow everything up and get too passionate about the players we like…we need to get over ourselves.

  • Dagger

O’BRIEN: “Do you think there’s a role that race plays in this?” JAMES: “I think so, at times. It’s always, you know, a race factor.” Look, Lebron is just pointing out – in a very tentative way – what everyone who isn’t completely ignorant already knows. And no, he’s not saying that all responses to the Decision were racially motivated, nor is he saying that everyone who doesn’t like him is racist. Bear in mind that Lebron is also simply answering a reasonable question (given the Q score data) from a journalist who’s done a lot of work on race in America. I can’t imagine how some of you see the world, but it must be a painfully simple place. As for Barkley, this is a great opportunity for him to rant and rave and actually get some positive publicity for a change. I suspect he’ll back down when and if he actually talks with Lebron on air, just like he did when he called Kobe a quitter.

@Karma, here we go again with the making sh*t up and replacing it over my actual comments. I said one of the best of all-time not BEST, DAMN, please don’t even try to act like KJ’s not one of the best PGs in history okay. Go back and look at every time someone made their own Top PGs list and I bet that his name comes up every time. You try to play the I’m wiser and older than you card but CRASHED and BURNED miserably when you tried to act like KJ’s some round the way PG, you should lose the arrogance and scrap whatever basketball knowledge you taught you knew and go back and learn the history of the NBA from Day One. Your knowledge is like danny devito, it always comes up short.

I’m so disappointed that I missed good conversations two days in a row. What I really want to know is how Charles Barkley criticizing Lebron the basketball player turns into a moral argument? At what point did Barkley question Lebron’s morality in such a way that his character issues came under fire? If anything Chuck’s transgressions only make him more credible in my book. He’s done things far worse in comparison to Lebron but is still somehow beloved by most basketball fans, white or otherwise.

  • karma89

    1. Kevin Johnson, at any point, was not one of the best PGs in the league or was even considered that way. It would be equivalent to saying someone like Andre Miller or Chauncey Billups are “one of the best PGs of all time”. They are solid, dependable PGs, but “one of the best ever”? No. That is possibly greatest exaggeration I have ever heard.

    2. I’m convinced you’re about 15 years old with the way that you write and the ridiculous arguments that you make.

    3. You spelt “thought” as “taught”.

    4. I’m arrogant when it comes to you because you just seem like the epitome of what a “casual fan” is. Your knowledge of the game is pretty much baseless and you spew off on your keyboard with any damn thing that comes in your head.

anybody who doesn’t think Barkley is in the pantheon with Jordan, Bird, and Magic never had the pleasure of actually watching him play beyone youtube mixes. Barkley was Lebron before Lebron was a twinkle in Gloria’s eye.
on the original (and only) Dream Team, there was MJ, there was Barkley, and then there was everybody else. NOBODY IN THE WORLD could stop that dude back then.

  • NicktheQuick

@Jtaylor I am not blaming Lebron and his handlers for the ESPN coverage of their training camp. I understand that this is an entertainment business and ESPN feels like the whole world should know how many times Lebron sneezed during practice or how aggressive his tone has been. That is not Lebron’s fault. I obviously don’t agree with how the Super-friends came together, but I think it’s good competition and I will watch their games because I am a fan of the game, first and foremost, before being a fan of any team. I do think though, that Charles should get to say whatever he wants to say because simply, he can. All these people talking sh** about Barkley, if they had the popularity and the podium to speak like Barkley would not speak their mind but be politically correct. It’s refreshing to hear someone give Lebron some tough love instead of all the coddling he gets from everyone.

Barkley spoke the truth and now the truth can set some people free, but Lebron is making himself look stupid and I am tired of sports head talkers saying white people are mainly upset, no black people are upset the way he did it and it was a punk move for a future supposed King. Charles joined the Rockets when both Hakeem and Clyde were starting to fade, as was he. Scottie was drafted to Chicago, and Magic was drafted to the Lakers. Lebron joined two other superstars in HIS PRIME when he could have very well carved his own legacy…which is why the older players were quick to criticize him. Its different when you’re on your last legs and have fallen trying. Its different when you just lead a team to 60 wins at 25 and just give up cause you hate the pressure (he does).

I’m sure the first opportunity that Charles gets to speak with Lebron after a Heat game on Inside the NBA, Charles will be a p*ssy and not speak so freely. Book that.” Why is that? Is it because Lebron is black? If Lebron was white, would Charles Barkley be less threatened when he talks to Lebron? Do you think Lebron, because he is big and more importantly BLACK (in all caps) will impose his will on an older man such as Barkley? That is pretty thuggish behavior you are expecting from Lebron. Charles Barkley… i love the guy’s work on tnt. He speaks the truth. Too bad he is a hypocrite… no matter how much charles hates this and no matter how much lebron has done to hurt his image, charles has done WORSE to society. To date lebron’s worst decision was “the decision” which btw raised 3 million dollars for the boys&girls club of america and has exposed dan gilbert for the ignorant prick i have known him to be as a michigan native. Charles’ worst decision? jeez… there are so much obscene ones. spitting on the little girl? throwing a guy through a table in vegas? getting bj’s from hookers while married and then bragging how good they are to the police? those are just 3 of the number of ILLEGAL infractions (spitting on a little girl=battery or what?) charles has done. 3 illegal actions that have put himself and others in supreme danger. yet he rambles along about the ETHICS of lebron’s decision? he rambles along about lebron staying in a small market(which is true) yet HE HIMSELF BOLTED PHILLY? AND PHOENIX? FOR BIG MARKET HOUSTON???? listen people. I think charles is RIGHT about lebron. HOWEVER i just can’t take him seriously due to his own past being 10 times worse than what lebron has done. just not “credible” when talking about personal issues as he has made mistakes well into his 40s…

Barkley is HUMAN-and unapologetically so. He’s shown us all his glass house, so (in my book) he gets free reign to throw stones all fackin’ day.

Charles cant relate himself to Michael, Bird, and Magic
    Chuck is an idiot
Dwyane should call him and tell him just be quiet
Chuck wish he did that when he played and is trying to defend his stupid life

  • http://www.threadsandkicks.com.au Eduardo

Charles is the best. He’s speaking exactly what everyone else feels. He’s right with everything that he stated in these comments. The backlash has nothing to do with Race. Can’t remember Michael, Magic ever becoming white over summer? Truth is LeBron was a lot more popular keeping his mouth closed and letting his basketball do the talking. One things for sure, LeBron and his team aren’t good at marketing. LeBron should just stick to playing basketball instead of building an empire because his LRMR team have shown they’ve got nothing on The Jordan Brand.

The people sticking up for LeBron in the comments above are either from Miami or got a free Bike at the Bikathon.

  • tavoris

@Da Holy Karron – Barkley was traded to the Rockets, dontyaknow? His situation was much more Melo than Lebron.

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

I’ve been dodging addressing this for a while, but here is my two cents:
    1) It is true that Lebron answered a question
    2) it is true that this question was leading and given to Lebron to stir up controversy
    3) Yes, Lebron didn’t say race was involved in the entire decision and didn’t continue it as if it was an issue.
The entire thing felt dodgy to me. I don’t buy the whole “he’ll get criticized either way for answering that.” You really need me to list ways for him to not get criticized? “I can’t read peoples minds, I don’t know” (true), “For some people, I’m sure it’s true, but for many there are other reasons as well” (true).
The stock answer of “yes, of course!!!” felt like Lebron was taking some weight off his shoulders on his awful decision. Did race play a factor on the Lebron hate? No sh*t. But what should be addressed is that it was a horrible decision in the first place.
The real response is “yes, some people unfortunately are going to hate every decision I do. They will never like me and it’s sad. But I unthoughtfully publicized my unpopular decision and glamorized myself and made money off it and that, in many peoples minds, is probably the most prevelant issue. I was the media darling and I took that and shoved it down everyone’s throats. So yes, race is always a factor, but for many, they don’t see race. They just see a man who made a bad decision.”
But yeah, white america rah rah evil white man carry on.

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

On a sidenote, the Magic comment always irked me. Yeah, Jordan would have never left Chicago, but Magic? He had his foot out the f*cking door his second season there. And his comment about never teaming up with Magic? HE PLAYED WITH KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR, A BETTER PLAYER THAN LARRY BIRD!
I mean, Magic got a Finals MVP and won the adoration of fans everywhere his rookie year, but what was Kareem putting up in those playoffs? Only 32 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and nearly 4 blocks!!! Kareem had three prime years left where it was debatable who was the best on that team. Kareem, the greatest center in NBA history!
And yet Magic would NEVER team up with Bird.

  • http://dfsjklf.com Jukai

*And his comment about never teaming up with Larry

  • Joost

Charles i like you, but come on man…
LeBron doesn’t need your advice and you should respect his deciscion.
At the end of his career, LeBron will have at least one ring more than you and that’s also because he is in fact more talented than you ever were, no disrespect. But still I think it’s sad,all those old basketball stars giving their socalled godly opinion, give LeBron (and Chis Bosh) a break, it’s a different world today and just watch and enjoy the Miami Heat play.

Why come Eboy used to used to use to love BARKley, pon now eim a no love i mon? Could it be the new subject of Bark’s wrath? hmmm… On another note,

I don’t feel LeBron was dishonest in his response. Whenever a black public figure does anything “viewed wrong” wheather actually wrong or not, (in Brons case, his right to a decision)they are overly scrutinized, and villified to an unfair extent. This a direct result of raceism. Bron said it was a factor, not THE main factor, so i think Barkley went overboard again, and i think because of the overwhelmingly bad feelings people have for the decision, perhaps some are over reacting as well. Wanting to feel no simpathy for this guy right now, perhaps it is hard for some to concede that race in relation to outrage was a factor. It seems some are finding it difficult to seperate these issues. Perhaps because LeBron was overwhelmingly loved embraced and hyped beyond ANY pro athelete of any race of his generation. So now because he has fallen in popularity it is hard for some to imagine race was played a factor. But if history has taught us a lesson, it is, that it regularly repeats itself. LeBron has been loved, hyped ect, ect. not just because of his immense talent, but also because of his image and marketability. He always seemed to do the right (or popular) thing. Think about it, how did America feel about Cassius Clay as apposed to Muhammed Ali post draft evasion? that was the original “decision” and no doudbt on a farr greater stage as far as race and polotics are concerned. Never the less it demonstrates that America can love a black man, as long as he plays his position,as long he’s a golly good ol’ boy and tips his hat, Ask Willey mays. But become rebellious in spirit, go against the grain, become too authoritative, or create too much change? and you will not be romanticised like Jesse James or Billy the kid and other white cowboy outlaws were/are. You can’t go ask Dr King, Or MalcomX because they unlike LBJ were litterally killed for this. So Just ask the leader of the free world.

Dre-I feel u. But there’s a difference between pushing for a trade (which the team isn’t obligated to oblige) and deserting an organization in the worst way possible. The way Lebron left the Cavs was borderline sadistic.
The backlash didn’t have anything to do with race, because Lebron is the type of athlete that has transcended race. The backlash was because while he has every right to go wherever he wants as a FA, he chose to leave in the most spiteful way possible.
Try this: date a woman for 7 years, lead her into thinking you will get married, then dump her on facebook for her sister.
See if all ur stuff isn’t burned the next day.

@tavoris. Totally agreed. Luv the lbj/woman comparison. So tru

charles is right on and all these pple saying his jealous should get their heads checked. This pompous bum lebron is very selfish and ignorant, that is why ppl cant stand him not because he is black. what a loser and cnn should stop asking supid question period.

  • Dre

Tavoris, I understand your point but the comparison doesn’t match up. It is only the fans being selfish pricks. I know Cavs fans that had wanted Lebron to stay but understood why he did it. If a team refuses to give you the proper help, they would rather you burn yourself out with them so they can they say we was loyal but never delivered. My friend fans are people, and people are fickled, catty, and wishy washy. He did what was best for his career. Also what Charles did is worse because he did not wait until his contract expired before he cried and demanded a trade and everyone knows how Charles acts when he doesn’t get his way. I’m sorry my friend but it is the same thing and Charles

As far as race is concerned their is no person that can transend race if the right opportunity presents itself. Like Obama he is president but a certain amount (not all) of the backlash he gets is race related. No one can completely transend race, that is a myth.

xkenchy, I think Charles is jealous anyone with an ounce of common sense can see that. He wishes he wouldn’t have done it so late in his career. Also Kevin Garnett said that if he would have known like he knows now he would have left Minn sooner. No one is jumping down his throat for those statements.

@ AllenP, the point some of us are trying to put across to certain bloggers( Eboy and Jtaylor21 in particular)is that the aggressive and arrogant posts are not required. For the past few weeks these certain bloggers are attacking anyone with an opinion, and i have noticed many contradictions and hypocracies posted by everyone, some of the selective retention is absolutley absurd. Since the ‘ decision’ Eboy has grown into sorry Eboy but a F^*kwit, ask yourself ” if Lebron and Bosh went to Denver would you still defend Lebron so blindly?’and JTaylor21, little, little boy, go back to kindagarden and learn to share in this world, it’s not everyman for himself,me,me,me that attitude is pretty sad, you would probably agree off site.
To everyone NO ONE is an expert,we all just speculate, even you AllenP seem to have grown an extra inch with your recent promo, stay grounded dude.

When people ask me what is my favourite sport? I’m torn between Basketball and Soccer, two sports i have religously followed for more than JTaylor21′s entire life, and when i respond with Basketball, it is becoz of the fans. How passionate and encouraging they are unlike soccer fans who are arrogant and aggressive on websites. SLAM is going that way with its current few bloggers.Sort it out SLAM

Amen …enough said…and about that golf swing thing?

  • oldschool

Sir Charles has it right, except its more than his Decision, Dance, and dumb comments… Much more serious and I can’t understand why it doesn’t have more press: what about baby bron’s dive in the Celtics series. Can anyone imagine any champion to give up on the floor like he did. Certainly not ANY one we know as champions. Thank you Charles for speaking. I’m at a loss, all the veneration and he’s done nothing yet.

  • Pataus

What else is Charles gonna say? The issue of race and racism diminishes in importance every night in his bedroom.
