Byron Scott Is Not Impressed With J.J. Hickson

Let’s just say that Hickson has made a less than favorable impression on his new coach. From the Akron Beacon Journal: “J.J. Hickson went to the bench with 5:38 remaining in the third quarter Tuesday. He didn’t need to get up the rest of the night. Coach Byron Scott’s frustration with Hickson boiled over in the Cavaliers’ final preseason game, an 83-77 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks that allowed the Cavs to finish the preseason 6-2. But Scott didn’t care much about the six victories as much as he did the mental lapses that caused Hickson to turn the ball over five times in 20 minutes. Hickson still doesn’t know the Princeton offense, Scott said, and he’s quickly running out of time. ‘He’s one we’re counting on to play a major role in what we’re doing. Right now, from an offensive standpoint, he’s not understanding what we’re trying to do,’ Scott said. ‘That’s disappointing, especially as much as we go through it every day.’ Scott has been passively trying to motivate Hickson throughout training camp. He said last week the starting job at forward was his to lose, and that if he demonstrated an ability to stay focused on defense, he would start. If he didn’t, Antawn Jamison would start.”

Isn’t it counter-productive to bench the guy? I mean let him play in that offense for long stretches. Maybe that would it easier for him to adapt. It’s not like the Cavs are going to contend for a playoff spot this season.

I thought Lebron had made him better.

I’m not highly impressed too.. I know the Princeton is difficult to learn especially in just one training camp though he must grasp it in full in faster time since he’s gonna be depended on heavily. In all honesty I can see him averaging 16 ppg max this year. In relation to this the player I’m impressed with is Sessions. I think he can really flourish on my Cavs starting or coming off the bench..

I also noticed that he still have slippery hands in a lot times. Losing the ball even with simple passes.. dunno why.. Anyway, as I see he’s hardworking.. so hopefully he gets to the next level.. He has the talent.

To be honest, his numbers have been impressive. In a team without Lebron James, Hickson’s role has been vastly changed. Not sure how I feel about Scott coming out and dissing him in the media. When you consider he had no offense except give Lebron the ball for his entire career it will take him some time. Yes, he’s not highly impressive right now, but he’s only young, and the foundation of his career has been rocked by James’ departure.

JJ is young and athletic and still has time to learn the offense. IMO Scott should start Jamison and let JJ come off the bench, that way JJ can see how it works in a real game situation. With all his talent and desire to learn and get better, it’s a shame he hasn’t figure it out.

@omphalos he would’ve benefitted from staying in the ACC longer. Then just giving Lebron the ball wouldn’t be the only offense he knows! Basketball is a cerebral game that’s why it takes more than athleticism to stay around. Ask my man Gerald Green!

JJ is in a pretty good situation, even if he doesn’t start. Jamison isn’t a young dude, so he’s not going to play huge minutes. Jamison can tutor JJ for half the season before he’s traded to a playoff team. At that point, if JJ doesn’t still doesn’t understand the offense, then it’s time to dangle him in a trade too.

    Patience, Lord Byron

  • JTaylor21

The seed Bron made him look good and that was the reason why the cavs stupidly wouldn’t trade him for Amare. Now no more bron, no amare and JJ is back looking like who we thought he was.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

How did Bron make JJ look good, just wondering, can you clarify for me.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Princeton Offense is especially hard for big men to learn too.

  • JTaylor21

@The seed, bron was dropping pick/roll passes so sweet and easy a caveman could have finished with ease.

    JTaylor’s right.

Hickson was the best young prospect the Cavs added to the team during Lebron’s entire 7-year tenure there. The personnel decisions that effectively led to Lebron’s departure were nothing short of catastrophic.

  • All Day

    @JTaylor21: co-sign!

  • All Day

@The Seed: LeBron made J.J. Hickson a better player. I’m sure you’ve heard of superstar players making their teammates better! When LeBron would drive into the paint, J.J.’s defender would rotate towards LeBron as the help defender, so LeBron would drop the dime to J.J. as he rolled to the basket for an easy bucket. No LeBron means no more easy buckets for J.J.

Never thought I’d cosign JTaylor but LBJ made Hick, but you would think he would realize that this is his time but…….

    What’s that, Bravo? I can’t hear you…

  • hangtime Hec

Him averaging 18 and 9 isn’t so far fetched. I’ll give Byron 3 years before he over stays his welcome on this team.

There are 3 things that will determine how this NBA season plays out. I wrote a post for my blog talking about all 3. Here is a direct link to my post: http://pardonmybias.com/nba/a-few-things-to-keep-your-eye-on-this-nba-season.html
    Feel free to comment.

    Byron is horrible.

  • Clay

What has JJ really done for all of this hype? Maybe with time he will become something, but for now he is not much. The Cavs are in a real bad situation right now.

  • Seven Duece

Is there a team Byron can coach where he doesn’t alienate the young talent on the team?

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

This is too many comments for the cavs. They should be non grata all year, and forever.

I agree with Cooper, too many comment for the Cavs. Fellas let’s just remember that the King is wearing a Heat jersey now…lol

love how the seed leaves the conversation once hes revealed to be an idiot.. now that aside i think JJ could go for 15 n 8 if he learns coach scotts system

Well it seems to me that Cleveland is learning to play more as a team with Lebron gone. And Scott is doing great things with the Cavs. Mike Brown’s game strategy was get the ball to Lebron and that is what killed the Cavs in the long run. At least now they are learning to rely on everyone and play with more heart and drive than ever. In my opinion the Heat can keep Lebron.

  • badmon

Cleveland played as a team with lebron there, just in crunch situations they all watched him instead of balling. Bryon is not waiting there is no patience in the NBA. you see what happened in NO. JJ. HIckson needs to step it up i have him in fantasy and i bench him. I watched a game he is not running the floor, he looks unfocused. st on the bench young buck and learn form a great coach. These young dudes have to humble themselves
