Evan Turner To Play Both Guard Positions

According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Evan Turner’s early playing time could come as a backup point guard for the 76ers this season: “Turner has been paired with Lou Williams on the second team for most scrimmages. For a majority of the time, it has appeared that Turner has been running the point – not the spot the Sixers envisioned for him when they took him with the second overall pick in June’s draft. ‘What I saw was when Lou and Evan were together, when Lou was on the ball and Evan was off, they struggled, because Evan wasn’t sure and Lou didn’t do a very good job of getting us into our stuff,” Collins said. Then we moved Evan to the ball and moved Lou and they both were good. So you can see where they’re most comfortable right now. What we’re doing with Evan is we’re mixing and matching him so he can do a little of both. But, at the end of the day, Lou’s a scorer and that’s what we’re going to have to do, put him in those kinds of positions ’cause if we put him out there to run the team, it really takes away what he does best.’ Collins said that starting point guard Jrue Holiday should play about 36 minutes. Andre Iguodala is penciled in as the starting two-guard. If Williams has to get minutes there also, it looks like Turner’s minutes will mostly come at the point.”

just from watching the Sixers in summerleague, he looked completely lost in the post. Just cant see him being an effective forward in this league. If he’s ever going to be able to be the type of player he was at OSU in the NBA, he’s going to need to control the basketball……my whole thought around this all, unless you’re completely certain he’s ready to make an immediate impact, which he certaintly didn’t display in summerleague, why try to mess with the playing time of guys like Lou Will and Jrue Holiday?

Can’t wait for D-Rose to school him again :)

  • Young C

If they didnt have Jrue already, they could play him at the point ala Tyreke Evans but him and Jrue have similar games in that they are both unselfish playmakers rather than scorers. Iguodala is the same way also. Lots of redundant pieces…

Im pulling for this guy but I think they will have alot of chemistry problems in Philly. Doug Collins will have to spend alot of time tweaking the lineup to get Turner to mesh with the other guards and Iggy.

i havent had a look at their roster but iggy is a small forward. i hope collins knows what hes doin

Evan Turner as a point guard? Maybe he’ll be a more healthy version of Brandon Roy.

    @San Dova…you wish

  • Young C

Or a poor mans Penny Hardaway

So you waste the 2nd pick in the draft on a back-up point guard? Nice.

I do like Turner, but I still believe Philly should have drafted Boogie Cousins. I believe he is going to be one of the most dominate players in the league THIS SEASON. Evan turner just doesn’t seem to have the affect on me and I think Philly messed up with this pick. We will see though. Lets go Sixers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@mike, haha maybe hes a bust already!

nah just joking. He can be a nice player but talent wise, ive said all along, Cousins should have been the 1st pick. Since Wall was the consensus top pick, either philly or the Nets should have taken him. Cousins at 5 is a joke

What is going on in Philadelphia? On one end, they can say they have versatile players who play multiple positions, but a roster full of them is just crazy. Young, Speights, Holiday, Turner and to some extent Iguodala are all going to be wasted “potential” players.

What is the deal with #2 picks not working out these past few years? Thabeet, Beasley and now it looks like Turner. The shame is that Turner would have been a perfect fit in Washington. Teams frustrate me when they don’t draft for team need and just grab the best player available in the top 5 picks; its a waste for both the player and the team.

cousins shouldve been the number 1 pick. he has all the tools needed to dominate in the league..and hes one of my fav players already

@MIKE: Many a top draft pick has been lost on a scrub F/C…. : /

Rondo picked his pocket at least once, from what I saw last night…

You guys talking cousins are a joke. Almost nobody talked about drafting him with the second pick. That is why he was drafted at 5. It was between turner and cousins. You know-it-alls didn’t feel so strongly a few months ago. Calm down. Sixers will be fine or make a trade.
