Gilbert Arenas Fakes Injury To Help Teammate

The Washington Post has the story: [T]he Wizards had no trouble without Arenas, who was a late scratch from the lineup because he initially claimed soreness in his left knee. Following the game, Arenas told reporters it was all a ruse in order to give Young the opportunity for more playing time. ‘I know he’s kind of frustrated he’s not getting a chance to crack the three position, especially since we’re going three guards, so I told him I’d go ahead and fake an injury or say something’s wrong with me so you can start,’ a smiling Arenas said in the locker room. When asked about the health of his knee, Arenas said, ‘I’m fine,’ and indicated he would play on Thursday in the Wizards’ final home preseason game against Milwaukee.”

People are gonna kill Gil for this, but here’s why they’re taking it the wrong way.

A. Arenas was probably speaking somewhat tongue in cheek when he said he faked the whole thing; B. It’s only a preseason game; C. it’s better than him suffering a real injury.

Lebron and DWade did the same thing. Lol!

  • Owa

    The always controversial Mr. Arenas…

  • underdog

Maybe Gil is not so loud anymore, but he is still one of the coolest cats in the L.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    This, I’m OK with.

  • Thinktank

I have no problem with this…moving on please

  • T-Money

Gil is an actor. Everything he does/says is an act. Either you think he’s funny or you think he’s a clown. What he certainly is not though, is a leader. Hinrich and Wall are the captains now, that’s very telling.

  • Kent Kanada

I think this is cool of Gil, but he doesnt need to tell the media this. When he talks like this he is always twisting a story to make himself look better. He could have just said that it was nothing and he just wanted to be safe and rest…

  • CONEY ISLANDER

THIS IS JUST FUNNY, ARE THEY GONNA KILL GIL FOR HAVING A SENSE OF HUMOR?

  • LeBron de Con

    Preseason, where fake injuries happen.

  • Elvis Freshly

    Lmao @Yknot

  • Fat Lever

Now if he had faked a shoulder injury and had to be wheeled off the court, THAT would have been hilarious.

  • meg

    This is so fricken awesumm

Co-sign Kent Kanada. Arenas should’ve kept his mouth shut. So not only did he expose Young saying he’s frustrated with no playing time, he probably made the situation worse by making him look like a crybaby. I don’t get Gil sometimes.

So now it comes out that Flip actually fined Gil for…being a good teammate. SMH…

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

Is this a jab at Wade/Kobe/Lebron?
Because if it is, I may jump on the Gil bandwagon again
@Bryan: Did Flip really do that? Sigh….

  • JTaylor21

Gil should have kept it to himself because the media only feeds of negativity and cares nothing about positive stories.

Why Gil, why? He could have handled it so much better – just talked to coach. He told the lie for the right reasons, but it was still a lie. I hoped he had grown-up some, guess not.

  • Hussman25

This is clearly another way to show management he does not or will not be in the Wizards plans in the next year or two… I commend him for putting a teammate first and trying to get him some burn, but by his actions, his beard/shaving protest, and some comments he’s made; he clearly wants out of DC; but he’s virtually untradable. Soooooooo…. Where do we go from here?

  • Papa Smurf

Nice gesture toward Young . . . but why tell the media? You know it’s not going to turn out as well as it should have.

  • rich

thank goodness i was scared cuz gil is one of my favorites on the court, sounded like he was havin some k-mart knee diseases goin on

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I’m just happy Gil’s not being a silent sally anymore. Hibachi

  • CyldeSays

Fined. You knew that was going to happen.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

Flip didn’t fine him, I don’t think coaches have that authority…I think Leonsis did

  • ai come back

its true nick young was pretty beast in college ………..gils a nice guy

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I stated Gilbert went from being the man, now to being a sideman. Its hard for Gil, thats why a trade would be benficial for Gil and Wall. Wall needs to know this is his team and Gil needs to be wanted, like he used to be. I say trade Gil to the Warriors for Monta Ellis. Gil would put up great numbers and Ellis can be that me first guard on the Wizards like he usually is anyway. BOOK IT!!

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^the seed.. completely stupid idea..
on another note this is a nice thing for arenas to do but a stupid thing for him to tell ppl he did

  • Ghost

Yep Gil got fined for this haha, dude can’t catch a break.

  • http://Yahoo.com Eboyhater

    We’re eboy

  • rich

i think hes good enough to say i dont feel like playin in this preseason game. their whole season depends on him and walls development so they would b wise to not have him go cancerous on the team cuz they cant trade him

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Being a good teammate doesn’t require him to talk and joke about it afterwards with the media.
It was a nice gesture, but if you rat yourself out about lying to your coach/organization, and you get fined — that’s too bad.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jtrain73 Jono

The wizards should fine him at every opportunity they can to get a fraction of the massive contract back.

  • lazaruz

iono i really like this move by gilb top bloke. also maybe it was knee soreness but he didnt wanna make a big deal of it so he used this as an excuse……

  • JoeMaMa

Flip went in front of the media and said Gilbert was hurting. Basically, Gilbert lied to his coach and then made his coach look silly in the press. You don’t do that to your coach…anyone who’s played sports knows you should respect your coach. If he didn’t want to play, he should’ve gone to Flip and said so; Flip’s known as a player’s coach, and would’ve likely given him the time off to rest up. Not too big of a deal, but..it’s like he’s trying to usher himself out of Washington. What’s next, poo in a shoe?

  • AT33

What Agent Zero was trying to accomplish with this absurd act is very simple: HE WANTS OUT OF DC.

  • Morgan

cosign Jono. I wonder how many “DNP – Coaches Decision”‘s Gil will get this season. The guy should be in the Wizards dog house Nate Robinson NYK-style.

  • http://slam evan thompson

gils just being a team player and if that means theres a player better than some of the starters hes going to try to give him shot

  • barnabusb

Too bad for all those suckers who actually paid their money for tickets to see Gil play! Ha ha! He faked an injury so they lost out! I love this game.

  • Aaron

Not the brightest batch of cabbage in the garden.
