Iverson’s Manager: Turkey Talks ‘Very Serious’

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The Allen Iverson Saga really could be making its way to Turkey, after all. According to A.I.’s manager, Gary Moore, Iverson is very serious about signing on to play with the Turkish squad Besiktas Cola Turka.

Iverson isn’t expected to make a decision until week’s end, and Moore says that negotiations with a team in China aren’t dead either. For the time being, however, the $2 million (plus potential bonuses) offer is making Turkey sound mighty intriguing to the Iverson camp.

Yahoo! and the AP report:

Gary Moore, Iverson’s personal manager, said Monday night there are “serious talks” for Iverson to play with a Turkish team. Iverson, the 2001 NBA MVP, is negotiating with Besiktas Cola Turka for at least a one-year deal. “This team seems very interested in having him come play,” Moore said by phone. “Allen absolutely wants to play basketball. He has no hesitation going there if that’s the best opportunity for him.”

“We are in very serious negotiations with [Besiktas],” Gary Moore said. “Istanbul is beautiful from everything we’ve learned. It’s not that far from the U.S., and the competition is good which makes it all attractive. Allen wants to play basketball.”

Neither Allen Iverson or his agent Leon Rose have commented on negotiations with the Turkish team.

The Answer in Istanbul. Sounds like a highly-watchable reality television show, no?

As long as Iverson plays ball that’s all that matters, but still wish that a team picked him up in the NBA. Surely he’s still better than some of the 12th men on the end of the bench out there in the NBA.

Is the phrase ‘jive talking turkey’ racist? and if so… which race?

  • rob stewart

I heard a report that the contract ha already been signed and minor details are being ironed out as the team processes everything. Has anyone heard this too?

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Eduardo – I think every teams GM would say he’s better than any 12th man on any team…BUT at this stage it’s not about who he’s better than. It’s that he won’t fit into a role player mold. He wants to be THE MAN….and it appears Turkey is where he can do that….and only be fined a maximum of 1%.

Stories abt him have become “white noise”… Ill tune back in once (if ever) he’s in a uniform…

Damn A.I., I never thought a dude as good as him would ever get treated like that! Wow!!!

Do we know 4 sure AI wouldn’t accept a lesser role here n the L? I mean last time SLAM reported that no team had even inquired bout AI,according 2 his agent. Tru his agent could b lyin bout it but we don’t know that 4 a fact. My pov is that I still believe AI is being blackballed. Yes its tru that AI has had his issues w/character as well as legal issues. And those issues have no doubt been factors n teams not signing him. But dam! ALL teams!? That’s bs. Cuz we ALL can agree that there r teams that could use his services. Think whatever u want, but bottom line, its sad that it has gotten 2 this point. Legends shouldn’t go out this way

  • Hussman25

This just reinforces what I have believed for atleast 2 seasons. He’s been blackballed.

As long as he is playing the game he loves is all that matters. Good luck AI.Slam needs to do a tribute to him.

  • JTaylor21

^Word is up. AI is a first class NBA legend, right up there with the likes of MJ/Wilt/Magic/Kareem/Russel, he may be slightly lower than them in terms of on-court greatness but he’s right up there in terms of off the court impact.

  • MikeC.

I think we can all agree that the “Iverson is better than most 12th men” argument should be put to bed. I’m not a fan of AI’s game and am quite critical of his team-killing ways, but even I can agree that seeing AI collecting dust on the end of a bench would be a sad sight. If Iverson is truly interested in being in the NBA, he needs to make a statement saying something like “I will do whatever it takes to be in the rotation, including signing a one-year, non-guaranteed contract.” If he knows he can be cut if he doesn’t behave or produce, then it’s time to put up or shut up. No more skipping practice, or showing up hungover. No more hiding in a bathroom stall while the rest of the team lifts weights. He’s going to have to put a pin in his massive ego if he wants to play in the NBA again. Teams are just afraid of the traveling circus that AI brings with him.

  • VisionofGreatness

He accepted a lesser role when he returned to Philly. He didn’t cause any trouble there. Forgive him for speaking up when something isn’t right such as coming off the bench in Memphis behind an unproven player and a coach in Detroit who had no idea what he was doing (Michael Curry). People talk about him saying he didn’t want to come off the bench in Detroit…Rip Hamilton said the same thing and caught no flack for it.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The best coach for Allen Iverson is George Karl in my honest opinion. Maybe if they ship JR Smith out, they could pick up Allen Iverson to be their 6th man of the bench.

  • Ali Duyar

He was the hero of many of us.Now he is coming Istanbul, here. I am very happy,I will watch AI live.He has got somethings in the bag to show us.

  • http://sdklff.com Jukai

    VisionofGreatness: Didn’t… cause any trouble?
He stopped showing up, dude. He stopped showing up, he said it was because his daughter was sick, then he was seen at a gigantic nightclub party with a bunch of other celebrities.
How did he not cause trouble in Phili?
Also, Rip Hamilton eventually came off the bench because he knew he would be killed for not trying it. That’s why Rip didn’t catch any flak. Initially, he DID catch flak. I remember people bashing him in that SLAM thread quite well.

Hi everybody, this is “greek dude”. Something sockingly unprofessional(at least IMO) happened yesterday here, something that really dissapointed me…i have to admit that SLAM (through Ryne Nelson,i person that i always appreciated/respected ) apologized for what happened, but the whole insident made me think again my whole participation here…For this reason i decided to ban myself ( fitting crazy desicion from a stupid poster ,eh..??) from continue posting here (justified sighs of relief through the SLAM nation….). So no more “stupid” comments and ridiculous affirmations… I honestly thank you for keeping me good (virtual) basketball company, i really enjoyed it (and i rarelly cared about the insults, i considered them most of the times justified having in mind my style of writing and,…some other parameters). I feel bad in a way for leaving you at that moment cause CSKA Moschow will be touring U.S. and i’m waiting for them to lose big time, so this will be a good opportunity for everybody to make fun of the Euros. I PROMISE that i will read every comment related, with the added bonus that i will not respond !!Anyway, i really enjoyed your company thanks again. NA EISTE PANTA KALA!!!(it’s greek, it’s a heartly greating)

People need to stop thinking AI has a place in the L, he was a good scorer but has NEVER made his team mates better nor has he ever won a ring. He is not a point guard and will actually struggle in Turkey as they play very team orientated basketball and do not take s”t which he will try to give. He will underestimate that league and not take it serious there fore even if he does go hell be back by christmas. Hes dont so all the people who are pleading his case for an team in the L to pick him up you guys need to let it go. Besiktas arent even at the highest level in europe the dont even play euroleage so bringing him isnt even a basketball move they could just use the press and exposure.

damn, what happened yesterday? id guess some slam writer went at dude hard. id guess crawford. what happened??????

  • The Philosopher

    Damn.
The Greek brethren were really cool.
I respect ANYONE who has made a living playing professional basketball on any level at any time.
Then, people wonder why the pros are such asses to everybody.
We give them an open invitation.
“Come on in.” “Be an ass.”
    Anyways…
Big shout out to the Greek brethren.
    Can’t even blame him…

  • The Philosopher

I, personally think someone posted in his name.

  • http://google c_cantrell

^Philo.. we dont even know if he really played pro ball tho n i honestly could care less if someone else posted that in his name he has been annoying since he started posting on this site

  • The Philosopher

All you have to do is click on his name, man.
And, there is something for everybody.
    PAPALOUKAS is my guy.

    That whole team…
Man, you’d better look them up.

  • http://sdjfklf.com Jukai

    @VisionofGreatness: …. are… are you being serious?
    Okay, scenario:
You are the perfect role model at work. Always nice, great guy to be around, perfect in the coffee room.
You tell your boss you are too grief stricken to go into work because of your sick daughter, and then your boss catches in partying it up in a nightclub.
What do you think would happen to you if this happened?
Would you still be considered a perfect role model if this happened?

  • The Philosopher

For those who think they were so “annoying”, and what have you, I’ll say this.
I can vouch that many up here consider themselves with high regard intellectually. See themselves as learned, and smart.
    Self righteous.
If some people were so “learned”, then dealing with different personalities, ESPECIALLY on the internet should not be such a chore.
    This is worldwide, brethren.
Not some little back yard in a corner somewhere.
There are worldly views up here. Not everyone is trapped in a bubble.
One can argue that some people on these very threads have never taken the time to even view another person’s opinion from an angle that is not their own angle. Never have put themselves in another one’s position.

  • http://google c_cantrell

i have looked at things the way he does but still dude is absolutely annoying.. almost as annoying as u sometimes

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

@Philosopher: Wait…are you telling me that you think greek dude was actually a pro just because his name links to a baller’s page? The dude went by several aliases during his time on SLAM and all of them linked to different baller’s pages. I mean, I could link my name to Michael Jordan’s page, but you wouldn’t think I’m Jordan would you? But besides that point, being a “pro” doesn’t excuse anyone from being an ass.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

    what happened yesterday?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I think your first guess was right.

  • hammer

Co-sign cantrell. Fotsis main argument was that AI’s hof status wasn’t a sure thing. That’s why he got flack from a lot of commentors, including me. I don’t hate the guy. I don’t even know him. But 2 say that bout AI,n my mind spoke of either ignorance or hatred towards AI. Like I said yesterday,u can like or dislike AI or think whatever bout him,AI is a hofer. And fotsis refused 2 believe that. And it became annoying. But what’s done is done

  • VisionofGreatness

    @lorenzo
He doesn’t have to be a pass first point guard…because he’s a two guard. There are plenty of players in the league now who don’t make their teammates better and don’t have rings. The fact that a man with the career that AI has had cannot get one offer from not one team in the league is a disgrace, no matter how you cut it. He should not be playing in Turkey, China or anywhere else besides the NBA. Period.
And who cares if Fotsis used to play or does play or whatever? His comments about AI and everything else on here are idiotic, plain and simple.

  • The Philosopher

    M Cho:
I could be wrong about him being a pro. I didn’t know he posts with different names. I believe all of the Greek guys use each of their names, and post as each other…
But, he did act like a pro.
From my experiences with pros, anyway.
Also, not to flame, but I did not say being a pro gives one a pass to being an ass, I was just saying that we give them an invitation to be an ass.

  • The Philosopher

Many of us want to “make a name” for oneself trying to humiliate a pro, and people go out of their way to try to make that happen.
It HAS to be bothersome to them.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Nah Philospher, it’s the same dude using different names. He might have played ball back in the day, but none of the names he’s used are his name.

  • The Philosopher

    Damn.
    Well…
    It is what it is.

  • The Philosopher

Call me naive, but are you sure that one guy posted in all of those names?
Hell, might start doing that sh1t. lol
    Kidding.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

@Philosopher: It seemed pretty obvious to me that it was one guy. Unless all those different people all called Iverson “Anna” and had the same terrible grammar and writing style with all the (annoying) parenthesis and ALL CAPS and the >>>>>>>exaggerations. I don’t have a problem with his opinions or viewpoint, I just had a problem with how never listened to other’s viewpoints while making outlandish comparisons, how he kept belittling other commenters and kept spamming his jibberish over and over again. Trying to read his comments gave me a headache — for real.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

So…I was reading the alleged unprofessional incident yesterday and I reviewed again just now. Unless Ryne removed the questionable post, I didnt see anything directed at the Greek that came even close to the vitriol he is capable of spewing. The Greek Guy is like the person in your crowd of friends that always thinks he is the smartest, most bad-a$$ member of the crew, always mouthing off with no regard for REAL decorum…until he crosses a line and someone punches him in the face, promptly knocking him out. Then they all make fun of him for being a lame ass p*$$Y. Sometimes, you need to be put in yur place. Yesterday Spanny, you were that guy…and you are now pouting like a spoiled baby. Good Riddance.

  • MikeC.

I’m curious as to what happened. Can someone point me to the thread where this occurred?

Final thoughts on the funny fella from Greece:
-He only means about 70% of what he says. The other 30% is just to make his point heard loud and clear
    -He knows basketball
-He knows how to press buttons
(You can only be annoyed at him, if you take what he says at face value)
    -He is funny.
All in all, I will miss his comments. He was something different and always elicited interesting responses.

And everyone needs to chill out on these forums… When people are arguing back and forth it’s all over the INTERNET. I don’t believe for one sec that Spannu/Fotsis is done. For years i read his comments and shared many of his views, it never got personal between us. I’d often implore him to be less insulting towards other adults in this forum (his kiddie remarks and belittling others perceived education/upbringing) but we were cool. He began attacking me and my opinion when i stated that one of his Greek national players, ironically Fotsis, was a dirty player imo. this was shortly before the WBC’s and he then proceeded to call me dishonest, pathetic, a kid (i’m 36 next week and have been playing since i was 15) and intellectually inferior, among other things. Now i’m a hotheaded guy and those insults really pissed me off but i tried my best to keep our arguments civil. Yesterday, on the Iverson post i had not even commented on, the guy started calling me out and linking me to a german team i don’t even like. This goading prompted me to go right back at him in a personal manner. BC joined in and took away Greek guys only forcefield here, his anonymity. Uncool maybe, but with his obnoxious, insulting, overbearing and spamming attitude, Spanny brought this upon himself.

I am no fan of greek dude’s comments, sometimes he posts like… 100 comments in a thread and transforms it into his monologue, and what he says is usually things like “KG >>>>>>>> Bogut, Anna to play in Turkey” which really don’t make anyone better informed or a meaningful argument…

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

All I know is, I would much rather read B.Crawford’s comments than many, many other peoples on here so I hope ya’ll aren’t giving him the hiatus treatment over the greek guys baiting and trolling. Honestly, the greek guy was text book violating the “commenting rules” here at slam, so maybe if there was more actual enforcement of those rules (especially with someone like the greek who violated most of them in a run on sentence in one post)then it would not have gotten to this point. The fact that he had to point out that he thought it was unprofessional and it insulted him and that SLAM apologized just reinforces my perception of him as a spoiled little brat (a Kiddie?) who has t point out how he is always right (even when everyone wants to punch him in the face for how wrong and disrespectful he is). The greek dude was like the Eric Cartman of SLAM online…when his own actions brought upon some serious Karma, he managed to spin it somehow into his favor (at least in his own mind). I have never really mixed it up with greek dude and although I found some of his comments worthwhile, I mainly just wanted him STFU! Or at least tone it down. You reap what you sow. The only person who created this situation was SPanny himself so…spare him the sympathy everyone…it just encourages him.

Look, if the question is whether or not i have violated the conversation rules here i say that i have done so 100% and many-many times. To the question “why i was never banned” i always thought that this happened cause ALWAYS i’ve been attacking guys ONLY after i’ve been provoked repeatedly from the other part(but maybe i’m wrong). The bottom line is that there is a HUGE difference between banning/insulting/whatever somebody in a virtual forum and going on and publishing part of his/her personal data.It was not my name, it was a part of my e-mail address (that Bryan considered it to be my name). To me this is serious, this is on a completely different level(believe it or not i ALSO wanted through this to protect in a way others in order not to have similar problems in the future). Anyway, tihs now belongs to the past.
P.S.: There were some posters that i have attacked in the past, (Eboy a million of times,Philosopher, tealish, teddy, etc) that were able to see ABOVE&BEYOND their justified dislike towards me and see the BIG PICTURE and what was at stake. This doesn’t change their opinion towards me and my ideas. BUT it does say SOMETIHNG about them. Now, does this really matter? i think that in a place were you never actually meat somebody( and everything is virtual) PROPABLY not. I do think he was wronged.
I think most people hear have broken the rules at some point, but some people are repeat violators.
    Oh well.

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

Trolls always come back. LOL. Also, philosopher, you’re not living up to your name. For a guy who keeps wanting to drop knowledge here, you should know that a healthy skepticism and not blind faith is the beginning of wisdom. That’s not an attack, dude, I’m just asking you to up your game.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

So Greek guy, it took you what? one day to come back here trying to justify your persona on this site. You said “The bottom line is that there is a HUGE difference between banning/insulting/whatever somebody in a virtual forum and going on and publishing part of his/her personal data.It was not my name, it was a part of my e-mail address (that Bryan considered it to be my name). To me this is serious, this is on a completely different level” I don’t agree. What is on a different level is your sense of self-entitlement and superiority. You troll on here for months and when it finally blows up in your face you try make it into some straw-man ethics issue. Bottom line: you have acted like an a$$hole on here since you started posting and have done nothing but constantly violate rules. Deal with the consequences. Don’t hide behind some other person’s action (which didn’t actually reveal ANYTHING about your personal info – I can get that accidentally at random just going to post on SLAM – you know how sometimes the info gets jumbled?) in order to deflect the attention away from the fact that you are a full-blown gaper.

  • The Philosopher

    M Cho:
I’ve got blind faith towards SLAM, too.
If that is wrong, then well, so be it.
I understand your yearning for my knowledge. Or, according to you, the lack thereof. For you to even allude to the fact that I may possess this “knowledge” lets me know that you, at least, acknowledge. For all I know, you could be Spanny, himself.
Also, there is a time and place for everything, and a learned individual, such as you seem to be, surely understands that.
Why would I come up here and copy other people’s style? Some people come up here saying things that many of us already know just to sound like they are “in the know”. That is not my style.
    Not an attack.
    My game is… “stepped up”.
Excuse me for still having faith in humanity. lol

  • The Philosopher

    And,
it sounds like you are pissed that The Greek shouted me out.
    Not an attack,
    just saying…

  • http://www.michaelcho.com M Cho

LOL. Like I said, dude, it wasn’t meant as an attack — the last thing I care about is starting an e-beef with you. I was just pointing out to you that maybe you shouldn’t have such blind faith in greek dude being a pro, especially when myself and others have pointed out things you didn’t know, such as his using multiple aliases. And as me being “pissed that the greek dude shouted you out” — well, I think I’ll just laugh that one off. Shout outs from a troll are worthless to me.

  • SirGirthNasticus

I understand why SLAM has stuck with Iverson over the years (he’s essentially a glorified ‘street baller’ that made it to the big time. We all know how they’re obsessed with being ‘street’). But at this point you can’t possibly justify his actions. At each and every stop (including a dream scenario for him to make a homecoming to his old team) he was a locker room cancer. I don’t blame GMs for not offering him a contract. What sane, logical person would?

Also, Gil will be the new A.I. as soon as his ridiculous contract expires.

  • The Philosopher

    Yeah, I feel you.
I’m just trying to win the debate. (even though there is none)
And, after you all told me he’s no pro, I conceded. (even though I displayed blind faith)
And, you did try to flame on the low.
    But, ah, well.

  • http://google c_cantrell

hey spanny b*tch get the hell outta here already

  • hammer

Man! 3 days already w/this fotsis fool! That’s more than his 15mins he is due. No doubt a troll. Now we got philo and mcho kinda goin @ it all cuz of that fool. Darksaber has been called out among others by the troll. This is getting ridiculous. And SLAM needs 2 step n here and resolve this s**t. I mean cmon! 3 days w/this s**t! I’m starting 2 dislike this fotsis fool more and more. D-ZAM!

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

In other news, I hear Iverson may play in Turkey.

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

*sigh*…. dude keeps on yapping. “big picture, hmm?”

  • tavoris

who’s pressed about their real name being used? I use my real name up here. No big freaking deal to me, because my persona can be easily authenticated with a google search. I guess other’s flame, and troll so much because they don’t have much reality beyond the computer keyboard.

  • http://www.twitter.com/jtrain73 Jono

Just go to China and play 1 on 1 with Starbury! That would make some noise around the world. No one cares about Turkey. The only thing I know about Turkey is Hedo Turkoglu, Istanbul stadium (where Liverpool beat Milan in the great Cup final ever!) and kebabs. Go to China, they’ll worship you, buy your shoes, buy your headband and your team-mates will stand on the baseline in a 1-4 iso and let you and Marbury do your thang!

  • T-Money

On the real though, BC will have to stop duking it out with anonymous posters if he wants to move up the chain…

  • kb24mj23

Heck, I like that BC beefs with people. At least he interacts with the posters and regulars in a meaningful way! I honestly couldn’t care less what names he posts, at least he’s out here being real. And I’m mad that Greek fella came back to post on the same thread after saying he was done. Now that is funny to me.

  • the nerve

    he still mad at me

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

My last post didn’t post… Tavoris, are you Tavoris Cloud?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

And @ ANTONIS: Even if I don’t agree with some things you say I never disliked you personally. Peace, man.

  • KING

What a shame the most talented 6 footer to ever play the game it was electrifying what he used to do to the comp scoring 40 at ease 50 when he wanted to prove he was great

  • tavoris

    Teddy-naw…not me

  • tavoris

@Teddy-had to google that name…I’m not a boxer dude, lol

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Welcome back ANTONIS FOTSIS. I’m glad you kept on keeping on. You remind me of that dude Petros from the Petros and Money Show. You certainly get people’s attention. LOL
