Players Association to ‘Challenge’ Technical Foul Rules

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

The players aren’t happy with the new, draconian rules when it comes to technical fouls. Apparently, it’s no fun to play basketball with the emotion of a robot.

Players are so unhappy with the regulations — and the season has yet to even begin! — that the body in charge of representing them is prepared to file a “legal challenge” to have them repealed.

From NBA.com:

“The new unilateral rule changes are an unnecessary and unwarranted overreaction on the league’s behalf,” Hunter said in a statement released Thursday on behalf of the Players Association. “We have not seen any increase in the level of ‘complaining’ to the officials and we believe that players as a whole have demonstrated appropriate behavior toward the officials.

“Worse yet, to the extent the harsher treatment from the referees leads to a stifling of the players’ passion and exuberance for their work, we fear these changes may actually harm our product. The changes were made without proper consultation with the Players Association, and we intend to file an appropriate legal challenge.” An NBPA official said such legal action would likely take place during the next 20-30 days.

David Stern routinely finds a way to create “buzz” prior to the start of each new NBA season; I’m guessing this is not the type of hoopla he had in mind this time around.

As for the “legal challenge”, there’s no word yet if Tommy Heinsohn will lead the Players’ Association charge to get these technical rules changed.

I certainly hope they undo these rule changes. When a referee makes a mistake they’re only human but they players have to act like robots?

  • JoeMaMa

Billions of dollars, massive egos, hyper competitiveness, constant media pressure, a blinding national (and increasingly global) spotlight, millions of fans, corruption among refs. I understand why players lose it over bad calls…I don’t like it sometimes, but I understand. Besides, why would you want to decrease the passion of the players? T them up if they’re being idiots, but this new rule is stupid.

Well, yet another pre-show to the looming CBA war between both sides. This ish is gonna get ugly soon.

  • Ali Saadat

So after a call a player doesn’t agree with you can no longer…talk to the ref about it, shake your head, smile at the call, walk away from the situation, and you can’t do that clapping thing because it might interrupt the peace in the arena filled with 20000 (10000 in the Wolves case) fans.

  • baller23

    nba is really soft.

  • vtrobot

hopefully the L removes their head from their *ss. this is stupid. the players aren’t the ones who should be the robots, the refs are. don’t give the referees even more rules that are totally subjective.

  • Etheknickfan

Charles Oakley must be rolling over in his carwash.

  • Abaci

The “You might be interested in” crap is covering up the story

  • Etheknickfan

Maurice Lucas….Ever heard of him? They called him “The Enforcer” He once chased Daryl(friggin back board bustin chocolate thunder)Dawkins into the crowd.

  • Etheknickfan

MJ finally beat detroit after buying an entire gymnasium to get stronger because of the Jordan Rules. Which was simply Chucks(RIP)way of saying “if that tongue waggin punk comes in the paint bust his ass” NBA would not have MJ if it werent for those Rick Mahorn, Bill Lambier ass whoopins.

  • Etheknickfan

Ima watch the WNBA more its better than this crap.

  • tavoris

Billy Hunter is looking more and more like Don King as he gets older

  • Abaci

Now I can read the story. Thank you

    Terrible Rule…
    NBA = No B!tching Allowed

  • dma

Well, the ‘owners’ have to keep their ‘slaves’ in check somehow. Wouldn’t want the patrons feeling ripped off.

Remember the “new and improved” basketball Stern and his minions introduced a few years back? Let’s hope these technical rules go the way of that f’d up basketball.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Good to hear.

  • KB8toSG8

Zzzzz……..this’ll all be back to normal by Christmas. As soon as the refs eject a superstar from a big-time game……Stern’s surely gonna change. Else, all hell is gonna break lose. KB won’t finish any game. KG as well. Boston would have a million techs. If showing off isn’t allowed, then add Miami and Lakers to that list as well. You could also add D12 too. That’d make about 6 or so superstars……..

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

It’s getting stupid. I mean, Kyle Korver was T’d up just for slapping his elbow when running by the ref, insinuating that he had been hit on the elbow on the last shot he had taken. He was runnning PAST the ref, not at him, he didn’t complain to the ref or do any Sheedanigans. We could be watching like 5 hour games with all the T’s we’ll see this year.

  • yaboy316

when and if this happens in the finals, the refs are gonna get so much s**t from everyone, the players, FANS, coaches… Everyones gonna hate them even more. This is not even good for their own image.

  • hendry

this is why sheed retire. hahahha

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

Hmm, if this boils over we might finally get that Timmu vs. Joey Crawford deathmach. Can’t wait.

  • http://ijustwantmynametolookbig.com Chukaz

if i’m a superstar an all star or my team’s best player, i’m gettin ejected on purpuse on da 1st game of da season. think about how borin da games would be. stern would definetly change da rules asap. if da heat’s big 3 all get ejected in da 1st quarter on opening night stern might run on to da court n chance da rules on da spot n issue a do over to start da game over

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

^No way James, Wade and Bosh would do that unless Garnett, Allen and Pierce agreed to do it too! LOL

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    that was quick.

  • Lucas

“We have not seen any increase in the level of ‘complaining’ to the officials” Serious? Apparantly you’ve never watched a Laker game. Serious though, I agree something needs to be done about all the cry babies in the NBA nowadays, but this is ridiculous. WAY too over the top.

I assume Mutoni got T’d up for writing this post.

  • PapaBearATL

This will slow down the pace of the game, creating an unfair advantage over fast paced, fastbreak style teams. As far as players go, if it’s their jobs and they don’t do it with passion, why do it all. Anybody with any type of competitive spirit would understand the emotion involved in competition and see that this dumb, did any NBA execs play sports of any kind ever? Unless they are gonna spike the cooler with Vicodin, fuhgettaboutit.

this is gettin to be pretty ridiculous

  • wilz

where can i send hate mail to the league about this. everybody knows they wana make the nba into a soap..so we need player reactions!

  • PlanetAsia14

This is a joke, I hope they win and that the technical foul rule stays the same as it was the previous year, where the players were actually able to act like humans and not like robots.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

tavoris: Billy Hunter IS Don King.

  • http://www.myczechrepublic.com SAB

it is absolutely PATHETIC how grown-ass men can’t communicate and find a way to make this work for the greater good.

  • http://www.youtube.com/officerbarbrady what

The bigger underlying problem is David Stern’s absolute refusal to address the horrible officiating in the NBA. Instead of tackling that problem, he is instituting pointless rules like these to distract from the real issue. The players are not the problem, Sternbot, you and your refs are.

  • http://www.youtube.com/officerbarbrady what

And I actually kinda agree with Chukaz. If the players can talk to each other and orchestrate the biggest free agent bonanza in history, they can talk to each other and orchestrate getting ejected together. If every star player got ejected on opening weekend, this rule would be history.

The new tech rules make the game worse. It’ll cause more griping from fans because more games will be decided by refs. If this rule is kept, I can definitely see whole series in the post season being ruined by refs. Playoff series get heated, and when the T’s pile up, guys get suspended. Just imagine last year’s finals with these new rules — the Celtics alone would have been missing half their players by game 2. LOL.

  • http://jayemmbee.blogspot.com Clutch Performer

that pre season game between celtics and knicks was BS
they calling Ts on all the Cs but when Gallo makes a gesture and is all in his ear they say nothign

i still think it has to do with David Sterns to make the NBA soft , and distance it from hip hop

or in the raptors suns game, reggie evans and grant hill goofing around they both get ejected

this all goes back to the dress code and what not

david stern wants to own robots or something

  • ab40

they should have waited for the new bargaining agreement to implement a rule change like this. It’s an ok to good rule but at this time with work stoppage looming how are you gonna explain that to the fans? btw the guy giving out techs in that boston ny game is 29 he’s trying to make a name for himself as a ref. btw games are gonna get even longer. the playoffs are gonna be a pain because you can only get a certain amount of techs so there go your dream matchups because some of the players will be suspended. And if you’re gonna do this in the big leauge you’ve gotta do it in college as well and get fiba to play along to. If it’s really for the betterment of the product that is basketball they’ll do it too. And some players only way to vent on a court is to give a reaction like that because they’re playing terrible so they’re gonna point fingers to the refs. What they can do is give a captain more leeway. Sending of a team’s best player (KG) because he asks you a question is not the way to go. btw it also includes hand gestures so amare should’ve had 7 or 8 techs for the thing he does when he get’s a bucket. I hope they back up of the rule when the season starts when they know it’s not working. Furthermore I’d like to start promoting the idea of jerry west who in an interview said he wants the old aba no foul out rule back that when a player had his 6th foul he can still play but when he makes a foul his team get’s a tech. not him because you know these suspensions are not cheap.

  • SpamsLots

Once a month, players should be able to give referees a ranking, and the bottom tier refs get paid less and are forced to attend a training seminar.

  • KB8toSG8

LOL……LO was T’ed up just because he put his hands up in the air for too long…..and he didn’t even look at the ref lol. We’re gonna see a lot of Duncan-double T style calls this season.

  • JTaylor21

All you people that are saying that players today cry too much after every call are right but players back in the 80s and 90s did the EXACT same thing. I was just watching the 91 finals bulls vs lakers and trust when I say that they were crying like b*tches after every call too. It’s just how it is, players are going to dispute every call and the league shouldn’t punish them for that.

  • The Philosopher

Pretty soon people are going to come out and ask why players do not have emotion anymore.
They are not going to be able to do anything until the championship celebration.
Now, THAT (the technical foul rule) can be construed as… race related.
    In my humble opinion.

  • Etheknickfan

So is the team that celebrates winning the chip this year is going to be T’d up for taunting the other team?

  • The Philosopher

    Shout out to The Greeks.

  • Ronald

Players whining about calls are as much as part of the game as much as ref mistakes are part of the game.
