Rajon Rondo: Out To Prove He’s Best PG

Well, he’s already worked himself into the L’s Top 5 PGs in the SLAMonline Top 50. From the Boston Globe: “A year ago, Chris Paul was considered the top point guard in the NBA. Rondo disagreed so much that he got in Paul’s face after the Celtics routed the Hornets in an early-season matchup. ‘People know who I am, but that’s not why I play,’ Rondo said. ‘I play the game to prove to everybody amongst my peers that I’m the best.’ Not Chris Paul. Not Deron Williams. Not Derrick Rose. Maybe Derek Fisher. ‘He’s the only person that’s got more rings than me,’ said Rondo.”

I really do feel that after Chris Paul, Derron Williams, and Steve Nash, Rajon has to be the #4 PG in the league.

  • JTaylor21

This guy is moronic, rings don’t have sh*t to do with being the best PG. Even if CP and DWill never win a ring in their careers and Rondo wins 8, they will always be better PGs than him. Learn how to make at least a 15 footer before you open your lucky a** mouth.

  • Def

He is not #4. And the order is Steve Nash, D-Will, Rose, and Cp. 5th spot might be Ty Evans.

  • Slick ric

Now this is getting out of control, ok Kobe got more rings than lebron so he’s better, but Fisher is better than CP3, D. Rose, and Williams cause he got more rings. uhh… no

  • http://sdfklflc.com Jukai

When did Paul, Williams, and Rose play with three HOFers again?
Rondo reallllly makes himself hard to like. The dude actively tries.

  • Def

    1-steve nash, 2-D-will, 3-D Rose, 4-Cp and maybe 5 is ty evans

  • Dar

I strongly believe that Rondo is the reason they lost the finals..

  • http://campusology.blogspot.com Kofi

    @ JTaylor21
I disagree. Rondo has the potential to be better then cp and dwill.

  • Savage Dragon

He’s a douche but at least he is in the way you want your athlete to be. He’s driven to be the best player that he can be and isn’t celebrating something that he hasn’t accomplished yet unlike other people.

  • Lehgo

He’s got that swagg too him. I know he’s gunna be the best ph when it’s all said and done, he’s the quick as he’ll and has handles for days, cp3 is over rated. What has Deron Williams ever done to earn respect?

  • Lehgo

He’s got that swagg too him. I know he’s gunna be the best ph when it’s all said and done, he’s the quick as he’ll and has handles for days, cp3 is over rated. What has Deron Williams ever done to earn respect?

  • Cool Dude

Hey, he got swag. That counts. I used to hate Rondo, but since he stepped up his game last season you gotta respect him. He finally has the skills to back his words up.

  • mubwar

Now that’s talking dumb…Rondo don’t lose the little fans u have out there…rings or not CP3 is first, deron williams 2nd, rondo as third, fourth for Rose and far down the ladder is Derick Fisher (no disrespect to the old man)…

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Jukai, not even the case, dude is very humble, but there is only so much you can take. He was give garbage minutes behind rookies during the WC’s, knowing he was the best PG on that Team USA team. At some point you don’t take being slighted like that, and thats what he’s doing. Anyone who knows me knows what I feel about Chris Paul, so I would never say Rondo is better than CP3 ever, but I do feel the combination of his ability to defend, his basketball IQ, his quickness of reaction, his ability to rebound, and push the break, and finish around the basket is not surpassed in this league. I’m gonna take back my first comment, I’ll take Rondo over both Deron Williams and Steve Nash….yep

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@JTaylor till you can hit 8 NBA 3′s in a row I suggest not talk about another man’s jumper http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h-LKYhuO7aM

  • mubwar

are YOU CRAZY..Deron williams drops 30points and 14 ass…rondo can barely score above 20…he is a good defender, great rebounder and pushes the ball great…but NOT BETTER THEN CP3 OR DERON WILLIAMS…RING OR NOT…

  • VisionofGreatness

    @The Black Rick Kamla
Rondo over Deron Williams? No. Over Nash, okay. Because Steve doesn’t play defense. Deron is a double double threat every night. Rondo only has this confidence because of who he is playing with. I sided with CP3 during that little dust up last season. If they switched places, Rondo’s mouth would be shut and CP3 would have three rings. All those shots that people give Rondo? CP3, Deron and Derrick would hit those all night long. He didn’t play in front of Derrick Rose on Team USA because Rose can hit a shot. If Rose’s defense steps up this season with his new coach helping him, I would take him over Rondo any day of the week. Rondo’s good, but he’s not Derrick Rose, Chris Paul or Deron Williams.

  • http://sdfklflc.com Jukai

The Black Rick Kamla: Nash is debatable. Williams makes you seem like a fan. I dunno what to say.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

Rondo can only do what he does because he is not the main focus. He could not operate at the level of CP3 or Derron Williams if he ran the team. You cant fault him for having talent around him, but you cant seriously say he is on the same level as the top pgs in the league.

  • ClydeSays

Rondo IS the best defensive PG in the L. Williams, Nash & CP are better scorers. In order to be the best overall, Rondo would need to hit his FT’s and start hitting his jumpers at a decent %.

  • jsmallz

Rondo is growing into his role.Considering all of the skills he has if his shot he had more confidence in he on the next level. This past season hes shown he has the ability to he just need to be ready to take the shot..but hes a true point make it easy for people to get baskets.multiple options not just one or just your stars but everyone

  • Wilson

Definitely agree with Clyde about FTs, they’re a bigger problem than his jumper is I’d say. If you watched last season, he got better at hitting open shots. The free throws, not so much.

  • Richie Relish

Rondo just can’t stop running his mouth. He is a good point guard, but will never be one the greats. If he had a jumper, maybe he wouldn’t been kicked off team USA this summer. Yeah I know, he dropped out, but only because everyone including Rondo knew that he was about to be cut. The only people who think Rondo is the best PG in the league are Boston fans.

  • The Philosopher

    1. Chris Paul and Deron Williams.
    2. Everyone else. lol

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

@Wilson, very true statement. Plus he’s percentages from the field would be much higher if the only shots beyond 15ft he’s given the green light to take weren’t when theres 3 seconds left in the shot clock. The free throws are really the major issue

  • Silent Storm

No point in comparing apples and oranges. Each one of those point guards plays on a respective team which has its own roster make-up and style of play. The only way to truly define the best point guard would be to have each one interchange teams for an entire season and then observe who led their team to the most wins.

  • http://www.twitter.com/notebooknick NotebookNick

To those who say he’s humble. I disagree. You don’t get in CP’s face and start talking junk about your rings and who’s better if you’re humble. He might shut up when one of the Boston’s big dogs says something, but he’s got a big head.

  • basketblogger

Im a big rondo fan, but he said that fisher is the only PG that has more rings than him however tony parker has a couple rings of his own. Also, if you are that sure of yourself, and this goes for any athlete, you always want to be the best at your position and sport.

  • Dyce

In the finals when kobe was on him he did 0. All he did was back up off him and let him shoot he was totally out of his game.

2 years ago, chicago vs celtics rouond 1..ROSE killed y’all so shut it lol

  • Way up north

thank you, notebook nick, if you follow the celtics theres plenty of ammo to shoot anyone down that claims hes humble, could be a cool dude and has an entertaining game, but certainly aint humble… top 5 pg probably, top 4 maybe, third the argument could be attempted, top 2 f*ck no. Second year pgs and wall are coming hard for the spots behind dwill and cp3 tho

  • Robb

You’re not the best PG Rondo, and you never will.

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Robert Horry is better than MJ (He got 7 rings, MJ has 6).

  • BH

Fact: In the 2009 “bulls vs. celts” playoff series, a 7 game series, “Rookie Rose” went off in exactly 3 games via the pick & roll. In other words, he went off on the switch man. In the same series, Rondo averaged a triple double. The only other PG to ever do that is called Magic. He’s an all-timer.

Fact: Of the PGs in question, only Rondo and Nash have ever taken over multiple playoff series. Not just put up numbers, but put teams on their back, and WILL them to playoff series wins. Another guy who takes over playoff series routinely is called Kobe. He’s an all-timer.

Fact: Of the PGs in question, only Rondo has been the best player on the floor during a playoff series victory against a “legitimate” championship contender. Nash has been the best player in series against the blazers. D-Will once led the jazz pass the warriors (true story). CP3 balled hard against a 7 seed team in ’08. And Derrick is still waiting his turn. Meanwhile, Rondo LED the celts pass a 60 win, contender a few mo the ago. He was the best player there. Lebron was there too. Lebron is an all-timer.

I don’t know if Rajon is humble, arrogant, kind, rude, or sincere. But he’s not crazy, he surely isn’t stupid, and, if you look at the facts – I mean really look at them – you’ll that ain’t dillusional either.

  • unrel

Kobe is better than lebron because he has more rings but rondo is a fool for even stating that he wants to be the best pg. How stupid can the Kobe riders be?

  • BH

One more fact: Last season, CP3 went down and Darren Collison, a mere rook drafted late 1st round, put up damn near identical numbers. Think about that for a second….Does that mean Collison is just as good as CP3? Better than D-Will?Better than Rondo?? Or does it mean the hornets a use PG friendly, pick n roll system that facilitates gaudy lead guard numbers.

Many of you have suggested that Rondo uses his HOF teammates as a crutch. But have you considered that systems are crutches too? Nash, CP, Deron, and Rose play in systems crafted for their game; they’re teams maximize their strengths and, accordingly, their numbers.

How many layups would Rondo get if he ran pick n roll has often as Rose? What could he do if the celts ran like the Suns? Of course we’ll never know. But give the kid credit: He runs when he can, like he wants too, with a bunch of guys who can’t barely run anymore. But most of the time, he’s stuck in the halfcourt without the ball in his hand and without the safety net of a reliable jumper. And yet, he still balls. How? Because Rondo is an all-timer.

  • JD

He said he wants to be the best, he didn’t say he was. All you people questioning his ego are idiots and clearly did not read his quote in the proper context.

  • Red

Wtf no Steve Nash is the best pg.

    1.Steve Nash,2.D-Rose,3.D-Will,4.Cp.

  • JTaylor21

For real how can Kobe be better than Bron based ONLY on rings but Rondo can not be better than CP and DWill regardless of rings? Rings are irrelevant when comparing players because they are a TEAM accomplishment not individual. If it so then HoGrant is better than KMalone HAA, JWorthy’s better than DWilkins HAAA, and RHorry’s better than CBarkley HAAAAA. Come on SON be real.

  • dmoore

    lol at rondo

tony parker is a better PG, how’s he gonna say he’s better than CP3

dude needs to become a better scorer before he starts talking smack and claiming the number 1 spot

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

IMO hes not even top 5 in the L….. Yet.

  • Red

If he was given the team Rose was given he’d be AWFUL.

  • The D Train

Contributions to a ring means something. “Rings are irrelevant when comparing players” might be the dumbest thing JTaylor has ever said on this sight…and that really is saying something.

  • LeoneL

Brandon Jennings, Stephen Curry, Tyreke Evans, and this year John Wall. Best of luck Rajon.

  • The D Train

RE: Horry as a role player is better than a role player like Vlade. Kobe is better than Lebron because he has contributed (heavily in some cases) to a title or two. Who are we to say that we know more than NBA players when it comes to who is better? If Rondo says that Fisher might be better than him, when he clearly is not, does that make Rondo a stupid cat? Or does it point to the fact that Rondo values only championships? And isn’t that one wants from one’s starting PG?

  • The Philosopher

    BH makes some interesting points.

  • The D Train

To continue my rant: we want guys to fill a role. So when they fill that role to the best of their ability should we disparage them? Rondo’s role is not the same as CP3, Deron or Rose. His role is closer to that of Fisher. Karl Malone’s role was to be the top scorer and rebounder on his team. Ho Grant’s was to defend the hell out of the other 4, and rebound. So rings are not the final say, but don’t we have to include rings in similar roles? Ho Grant to Karl Malone is apples and oranges. Kobe to Lebron is apples to apples. They are the alpha dogs. The alpha dog leads his team to wherever he can. Kobe, as the alpha dog, has led his team to 2 titles. Lebron has led his to zero. Did Kobe have a better supporting cast and coach? Absolutely. But can you diminish his accomplishments for competing under the situation he was placed in? No. Does Lebron’s accomplishments carry more weight because of his situation? Of course. But that doesn’t in any way mean that Lebron, with his 0 Finals wins is remotely better than Kobe. You can have your Dan Marino-stats, but I’ll take Joe Montana every day of the week. Supporting cast might mean something, but so do titles. Lebron will most likely learn that playing with Wade and Bosh in Miami. So if/when they do win a title or 5, let us remember these “Kobe had Pau” discussions when debating how great Lebron really is.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Pretty much what Philosopher said:
    1. Deron Williams and/or Chris Paul
    2. Everyone else.

  • JTaylor21

All I have to say is that just give Marino, Jerry Rice and he wins more than 6 Super Bowls. Everyone knows that Marino’s the better QB while Montana’s on the better team. Same story with Bron being the better player and Kobe being on the better team.

  • Big E

Saw CP3 at a Hornets open practice/scrimmage today and dude was looking nice. You gonna have to bring it to be better than CP3, Rondo. When a guy is truly the best, he doesn’t have to say it. There will be enough people out there to say it for him. Tsk, tsk, Rondo.

  • Big E

Heck, I’m still waiting for Rondo to average more than a 70% free throw percentage.

  • Big E

@BH-Collison put up those nice numbers but he went 14-23 in 37 games as a starter. Put up nice numbers but didn’t know how to win. And Collison turns the ball over a lot. If he did that last season, wait until teams start game planning for him. He might very well average 4 to’s per game this season. CP3 is going into a new system this season and I’ll bet he’ll still be better than Rondo. Shut your mouth Rondo and play ball.

  • The D Train

JTaylor…thank you for proving your idiocy yet again. Marino is better than Montana? Wow, you continue to climb up the mountain of ignorance to heights mere mortals cannot achieve.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

rondo can only hit fastbreak layups, no jumpers, no fts. his defense is overrated, yea he gets steals, but ai style steals, rondo sucks at guarding straight up, very good rebounding pg tho. get real, rondo is maybe 5th best pg. and rick kamla, rondo hitting those threes in horse was a miracle, or durant sneezed on him.

  • http://kb24.com DreXnaW21

i would go for Derrick Rose but he’s still showing potential, i mean now with Carlos Boozer he should at least average 10 assists this season…

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Sure, he’s the best point guard AFTER ball games, when guys like Chris Paul are shaking hands with guys like Paul Pierce, and Rondo gets in their faces to rub in their faces the win Ray Allen gave them.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

  • jarrett

Rondo is arguably number 1… I think he’s the best athlete in the League because i’m sure he can be the most effective in different professional sports (baseball, football, track) Dude can b like Deon Sanders if he really wanted to.

  • jarrett

but to say Rondo isnt top five is insane. If the Celtics won the chip he wouldve won finals mvp

i love his game, but this comment reminds me of the 2k11 ad and just leaves a bad impression of him being a show off

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

I like this, this is the reason Rajon Rondo will be an all time great to me. He is already the best defensive point guard in the league, which is very important to winning games. He can score and get people the ball, he almost average a triple double against the bulls in the playoff series. No other point guard in the NBA has came close. I like Rajon, game because I feel defense is more important than scoring personally. Alot of people can score, but who can shut down their player and still have an all around game. Collison came in and put up CP3 numbers, the reason they did not win, because players game up and alot of them were injured, so to me CP3 is getting overrated. Especially if Collison comes in at Indiana and still looks good. Deron to me is the best point guard in the league, but he plays no defense and relies on scoring to much and sometimes does not get his team involved, but overall he can do anything offensively better than Rondo and CP3. Nash is not in the conversation to me, and Derrick Rose is playing great, but lets see him pass better and do it consistently for some more seasons first. People are to quit to annoint players as the second coming for three good seasons. Let them prove themselve. Rondo is moving up, just watch him play and realize that in 08, he was the MAIN difference in why the Celtics beat the Lakers, not anybody else. Rondon is becoming a more complete guard that anybody else in the NBA, because of his defensive prowess, and he can score, but he likes to pass and set people up, once he gets his jumper down, it will be hard to argue him not being number one. This is coming from some one, who hates the Celtics, but understand that Rondo role is different, so he is depended on to do more than just score and pass to get numbers, he is to me the best all around point guard in the NBA. BOOK IT!!!

  • BH

D-Train may be the smartest person here.

  • BH

The Seed is gaining on D-Train

  • BH

And @ Big E — I’m trying to understand your logic. Initially, it seemed your opinion, and most people’s opinion, was based on stats. But when answering the “Collison argument,” you referenced wins. That what nerds call an “inconsistent rational basis.” If you’re opinion is based on win pct, Rondo’s clearly the best (Fish is out because he’s a role player and Big E already explained that). If you’re basing your opinion on stats, then some serious questions need to be answered. Specifically, we need to know what type of numbers Rondo would put up in a PG friendly system; we need to think about the kind of damage Rajon would do if he ran pick n roll 80% of the time like CP, Deron, and Rose do, or if he just ran like Nashty. My prediction: not only would Rondo live in the paint in those systems, he’d put up Magic numbers. Silly numbers. Seriously. Look at those hard, unchangeable facts again and let them change your mind.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

Seriously. Look at those hard, unchangeable facts again and let them change your mind.
    Jedi mind trick…

  • tavoris

Rondo’s confidence has nothing to do with playing for the Celts. He was this way when he was at KY…he was this way before the Big 3 got there. Rondo is a player that believes in himself a heluva lot more than ya’ll believe in him. I applaud it.

  • Sunny Wiims

Rondo is top 3 pgs hands down …he was the best player for celtics in the playoffs …he is one of the most unstoppable pgs in the open floor and his overall numbers speak volumes on his contribution to the team… cp3 is nice but missed most of last season with injuries so i dun kno if he will return to the mvp-esque cp we know him to be ….steve nash is the best passer in the league …dwill n drose are the best scoring pgs….but rondo understands the concept of a team not individual stats but playing within the team system and producing and help your team win..so in my specific order:
    west pgs
    3.Cp3(if healthy)

    east pgs
    2.D rose

    overall pgs

  • BostonBaller

I just like the fact that most of you who said he sucked just a year ago are debating whether or not he is in the top 3 to 5. lol. That in it’s self makes me laugh. You all have valid and somewhat valid points but don’t throw the whole “playing with 3 HOFers” in the mix unless you look at the other side of things like scoring and assists. What I mean by that is if CP3 or DWill were on the C’s their scoring would be down and probably their assists too b/c they would not have the ball in their hands 95% of the time like they do now. Maybe RR’s scoring would be like theirs if he had the opportunity to shoot at will or maybe not. I’m not saying he is the best PG yet (especially since his J and FT’s need improving) but he does bring to the table a few things they don’t and he has gotten the best of both of them head to head more than the other way around.

  • BostonBaller

As far as RR getting in CP3′s face I believe it was a two way street and both players had been jaw’n throughout the game but ppl will believe and convince others to see their side. RR was not innocent by any means but let’s not make CP3 out to be a saint. I’m sure it will forever be known as Rondo talks smack to CP3 about rings and nothing negative will be remembered about CP3. I’m sure most remember Danny Ainge hitting Tree Rollins then biting him right? Wrong, it was the other way around. Tree hit him then Ainge tackled him then Rollins bit him…but no one believes the truth. I digress. lol

  • Blackphantom

The only weakness in Rondo’s game is his mid-to-long rang jumper. In Game 7 of the Finals he freakin air-balled a shot from the key. He’s the only elite PG i know that coaches aren’t afraid to send to the charity stripe(His post-season average of 2010 was a staggering 59% from the free throw line)

  • vtrobot

I’d never seen the Geico Horse footage. Makes it seem like Rondo is a great shooter. The game-time jitters must really fuk with his shot. KD is just ill. And Rondo is one of the best PG’s in the league, will continue to get better and should have a great career. He’s THE BEST PG (at some things) and THE WORST at others. Oh, and how are CP3 and doing w/o HOFers on their teams? Yeah, somewhat like RR was doing prior to KG and Ray’s arrival. People’s TOP 5 PG lists are nonsense. You see what you want to see and you use numbers which may or may not even be relevant to back up your claims. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and it’s hard to say who’s truly better than who. Boston Baller continues to speak the truth. It will be funny if MIA comes to town and humiliates BOS to start the season. Don’t think that will happen tho.

  • Blackphantom

    My Top 5 PG list.

    1-Chris Paul
    2-Deron Williams
    3-Rajon Rondo
    4-Derrick Rose
    5-Steve Nash

  • Blackphantom

I accept criticisms since i didn’t put much much thought into it

  • http://stapledesign.com Spaceship Jay

If he was drafted by the Warriors he’d be irrelevant.

  • http://thosefishtacosarethetits.blogspot.com Boston_Blogg3r

I wish Rondo would get traded for Chris Paul. Rajon would be so humbled when he doesn’t have a team of All-Stars surrounding him, and Chris Paul would thrive in a system with talented players to pass to. Rondo’s ego is going to be his downfall.

  • Joosh

RONDO!!!! yea i like the attitude, “hes the only guy who got more rings than me” haha yea
