Report: LeBron James is Rich, Influential

Not too shockingly, Fortune mag has LBJ listed as one its top “40 under 40″. Clearly, Ron Artest was not consulted for this piece. The Palm Beach Post has the details: “Fortune magazine has produced its list of the 40 most influential people in business under the age of 40. It has selected one athlete, and a 25-year-old at that: LeBron James. James is ranked 20th, behind the likes of a Facebook founder, the Google co-founders, and the Univision president. It says of James… ‘James’s primetime signing with Miami this summer was slammed as a publicity stunt, but his brand emerged unscathed. It was the latest marketing bonanza seeded by his own company, LRMR, which James and high school friends have built over four years.’”

His brand most certainly did NOT emerge unscathed.

A recent opinion poll showed his popularity had massively fallen off – and he’s now the 6th most-hated American athlete.

Greg Tanner, are you the one and the same, operator of streetball.co.uk brother of Stu Tanner now famous for shaking Devon Harris up in a 1 on 1 game in a collared shirt and sweater?? (I know he was known in streetball circles well before that clip).

Even if he is the six hated, it is funny how the ones that are hated so much get all the publicity. Americans and the media love us some Negativity!

i question the idea that his brand has emerged unscathed, to put it mildly. he was not caught with his (tiger) pants down, but his brand has been damaged in the sense that advertisers will think twice about using him as an endorser until they can see what kind of long-term damage his reputation will suffer. here’s something to think about, though: considering all the money that’s ALREADY invested in his brand, how hard do you think the companies that have invested in James (cough, cough, nike) lobbied/ fought/ argued to get James on that list? and isn’t it plausible that while looking for an athlete to put on there, Fortune may have even called the boys in Portland for suggestions?

If James is ranked 20th, Wade should be 15th. Bosh and James went to Miami cause of Wade (and Riley). Plus, he gets to nail Gabrielle Union every night. Talk about being influential.

  • Sizzle

@Sparker I really don’t think advertisers will question signing him up for anything. The decision was largely viewed as a flop/disgrace, and still raised 2 million dollars. Hell, I think any advertiser/endorser would do the same thing if they could make 2 million dollars over a 10 second announcemnet and 59 minutes and 50 seconds of pure fluff..

  • T-Money

I don’t think advertisers will think twice (or even once) about using Bron to move product. Some people still talk about the “backlash” but we’re seeing it already but it’ll hit home for some once the regular season rolls around: this is still LeBron freaking James and he’s kind of a big deal. His brand is doing just fine. / What’s never mentioned with the Q rating is that Kobe place even HIGHER on the most-hated list. Take it for what it’s worth.

People can say all they want, hate all they can. LeBron Raymone James is the biggest star in Basketbell 2day. That u can’t change or affect.

How long before he is #1?

  • barnabusb

When did basketball players start calling themselves a brand? Who started this stupid trend? LeBron James is not a brand. He’s a person. Maybe he endorses products, maybe he partners with companies, but he, himself, is not a brand.

don’t know where they got their information about LBJ’s brand not taking a hit… took a massive hit on his image and now every common person who aren’t basketball fans thinks that LeBron’s got a massive ego about himself.
