Shaq on Free Throws: ‘I Never Take Advice’

O’Neal doesn’t need your advice when it comes to his freebies, because that apparently leads to even more failure for him at the stripe. Riiiight. From WEEI: “Shaquille O’Neal has taken the third-most free throws of any player in the NBA (11,347), and trails only Wilt Chamberlain in the amount he has missed (5,974). But what he might lead the professional basketball-playing world in is something that no stat service will hand over – advice. Wherever O’Neal has gone he has been besieged by legions of well-meaning observers who swear they have the elixir to the big man’s free throw shooting woes. For those people, Shaq has a message: Don’t bother. ‘I never take advice,’ O’Neal told WEEI.com after Tuesday’s practice, saying he learned that lesson by his second season in the league. ‘Actually taking advice made my numbers drop. Whatever you use to get you to where you are at you should never change.’”

I’m sure Iverson has the same mindset..

I remember when he shot “granny style”.

    Sad.

He decided that he didn’t need any advice in his second season? That says a lot. If he had been utilizing various coaches, seeking out other big men etc. for 8-9 year and never saw any improvement, then I’d give him a break. But after only 2 season – that just seems foolish. I remeber taking golf lessons, my score got a lot worse before it got better because I had to ‘unlearn’ some bad habbits. Now my game is at least 3 times better than it would have ever been without that coaching.

c’mon niq, don’t bait the greek dude.

  • Blue

I remember when he tried shooting “granny style” a la Rick Barry.

    Sad.

  • Yesse

No wonder why he can’t make them.

  • NicktheQuick

^^ @ Leonel wouldn’t it be great if AI actually signed with a Greek team. Bet Greek dude would lose it, esp if AI became a cult hero there.

To be fair to Shaq his free throw mechanics and percentages were much better at LSU and earlier in his NBA career, before people started messing with his form.

I was there. His first season he shot fairly well, then the magic brought in buzz breamen, i’ll never forget it. Now in the playoffs he always shot alot better than the regular season check the stats 95 against Chi, Ind, and Hou, he shot like mid 60

  • The Philosopher

    Shaq’s a fraud.
In Phoenix he said Grant Hill told him to shoot free throws the same way he did in high school.
    And, he took that advice.

    ^LOL. booked!

Fa real the best way for a big guy, or anyone for that matter to improve there touch is too shoot an extremely light weight ball (nerf/kids ball)and shoot from a shorter distance. I help people with their jumpers, one person i helped went from a 40% his junior year of HS from the FT line to 75% in his senior year. And another from a sub 40% 3pt shooter to above 55% his senior year. Really shooting is more abstract then people think, and i’m willing to bet shaq has only had his form and grip on the ball tweaked.

  • unrel

in other news.. he’s out of shape..

  • Jer Dawg

He should just shoot left handed. Since he thinking his left hand has some magical powers.

  • Blue

I can’t wait to see Shaq on the floor with Shrek and Donkey.

  • OneStep

For a guy to achieve what he has with just two offensive moves (a drop-step and a baby-hook) and no free throw ability is incredible. As a fan of the game though, I would like to have seen what he could have become if he’d dedicated himself to learning the game and developing a complete low-post arsenal of moves. Also, there have been many 7 feet-plus players who have shot over 70% at the stripe so I’m not sure that his size is that much of an excuse.

that’s what you get from ahletes who’ve been told that they are god since they were teenagers. Don’t take no advice, don’t need no advice. Shaq, Lebron, AI, etc etc. While regular folk have to reconcile with their mistakes and change, they just chug along the same way they’ve always been because they’ve always been “right”.

  • Sarah

    We can tell, Shaq

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

Shaq says things to say things.

  • Mr. Robinson

  • peter

@nbk has a point. Shaq must suck at bp

  • ab40

well he got super strong and so did dwight and wilt and thus he can’t shoot. plus when he shoots his hand is almost at rim level and his hand will EAT YOU ALIVE

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Most of the time Shaq makes them when they really matter, strange but true.

  • The Philosopher 2.0

…and that’s why u suck at free throws you idiot
