Von Wafer Wants To Make Celtics, Play Minutes

by Tzvi Twersky | @TTwersky

Those handicapping the battle for the final spot on the Boston Celtics roster think that Mario West and Stephane Lasme have the edge over Von Wafer.

Wafer, however, has his sights set  on more than just making the team.

I’m not just trying to make it; I’m trying to play, too,” said the 25-year-old who played overseas last season. “Just making it is not enough for me.”

Four games into the preseason, Wafer is averaging almost four points in 16 minutes per appearance. He’s working on bettering those numbers (and his defense), though.

“I’ve got to cut harder, play better defense,” says the man on the bubble. “I’m Just getting more familiar with where I’m supposed to be.”

While the 6-5 guard still has a shot of making the team, he has little hope of playing meaningful minutes behind Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo, Nate Robinson, Avery Bradley and Marquis Daniels.

What happened to this guy? I remember him being such a nice spark plug off the bench for Houston a few years back then even taking a starting job with T-Mac injured. Did his time in Greece really kill his abilities?

^ Nah he was just injured for a bit. He would have been back with Houston but he didn’t pass his physical due to some sort of injury. He’s definitely good enough to crack an NBA roster and make some noise. Maybe Houston will snatch him up again if the Celtics don’t.

Been injured, went to Europe for a year, this guy can be huge for the C’s if Doc so chooses to use him. He and Nate would be an exceptional change of pace off the bench together. He’s just an all around, perhaps not defensively, improvement from Tony Allen. Hopefully Doc doesn’t just let him fall to the wasteside like Daniels…

Thanks Teddy, I thought he was still NBA caliber. Why is he then struggling to crack a team roster though?

@ caboose, him and mccants for some reason can’t get on after being very productive

  • ????

Also, he has serious attitude issues.. if i remember correctly he was benched by Rick Adelman in a playoff games some years back, and i read he didn’t get along well with his European team. Not good for someone who isn’t even that good a player to begin with.

@ ????: Wafer is good. But yeah, I remember hearing about that–Adelman sent Wafer to the locker room early because he was angry about being taken out of the game. But I can’t blame Wafer for that, he was playing great and the coach benched him. I can understand his frustration, and I’m sure many other NBA role players like Wafer can empathize with it as well. Doesn’t mean his attitude is bad though–he is productive and plays hard… What more can you ask of the guy?
