You Dunk, You Win

In case you don’t know (according to Wikipedia) a Slam Dunk is a type of basketball shot that is performed when a player jumps in the air and manually powers the ball downward through the basket with one or both hands over the rim. Now how does the amount of dunks an NBA team throws down correlate between that and their winning percentage. A recent study performed by the Harvard Sports Analysis shows that NBA teams that dunk more, win more: “Given that dunking does appear to correlate with winning, what can we take this to mean? The thing to avoid is seeing dunking and winning as a causal relationship (i.e. dunking more means you will win more). Instead, we should view high dunk totals as a representation of a good team (i.e. good teams will produce more dunks). These conclusions support the notion that “Dunks are Awesome!” but also that, despite the complaints of the old guard, dunks have become a fundamental. As if NBA fans needed another reason to fear the upcoming season, the only team that will enter the 2010/2011 season with three players in the top 20 for dunks are, you guessed it, the Miami Heat.”

There is some element of truth to this. Just look at international ball. Team USA had always led in # of dunks/game except the 2004 Olympics when AI and Steph were jacking it from outside…

This does make sense considering dunks are easy baskets, and easy baskets are created from great teamwork and smart decisions on offense.

I remember last year at the beginning of the season, Howard had more dunks in the first ten games then entire teams in the East.

There’s also a study that just came out that proves that teams with less turnovers win more. Also teams that box out more win more. Also teams that pass more win more. Can I have my ten minutes back? I feel like I just got ripped off.

better defense = more fastbreaks = more dunks = more wins
inside-out basketball = more dunks = more wins
    nothing new here, carry on…

Doyouwantmore, that took you ten minutes to read? Damn homey. Skim the article unless you’re memorizing it.

Hmmm, I wonder if a team at the end of the year that is tanking for the lottery might think of only trying to dunk to prove this theory wrong.

Well the Celtics employed this in last year’s playoffs. They limited Dwight’s dunks by fouling him instead, and that seemed to work.

The Spurs would like a word with you.

Hmmm…..Cleveland would’ve loved to have a word with you last season. And so would Miami too……..And who can forget about the Magic?
