End of the Greg Oden Era in Portland?

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

Long before last night’s devastating news, there were already clear signs that Greg Oden‘s future in Portland was less than assured.

During the emotional press conference, one couldn’t help but feel as though Blazers officials (despite their desperate, but ultimately failed attempts at optimism) were basically saying goodbye to the former #1 pick.

Oden, 22, is set to face his third season-ending surgery, and once his rehab concludes, the Blazers will need to make a difficult decision regarding his future. Some in the local media are pushing for the team to cut ties with him.

From the Oregonian:

I’m not sure that a Paul Allen-owned team will ever win a championship. But I’m convinced that what needs to be done here is obvious. Enough sitting around, waiting for Brandon Roy to be healthy and for Oden to make a miracle recovery.

It’s time to battle, not on the court, but in the front office via trade and free agency, where the Blazers have been a non-factor. It’s Cho-time. And it’s high time Allen proved that he’s willing to do what he needs to do to make the organization whole again. This Oden thing is done. Close the door. But I’m hopeful the Blazers know what needs to be done next.

It’s not a fun time to be a Blazers fan.

Greg Oden’s basketball career is at its crossroads, with no readily available answers or solutions to be found.

    Sad….really sad…

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The 1984 and 2007 NBA Drafts (seperated by 23 years) were epic failures for the Portland Trail Blazers. At least they got Brandon Roy. . . lol

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Technically speaking, it can’t be the end of an era if the era never started. GO is hopefully a smart enough kid to take that money that he has and make it work for him because his basketball career is over and likely headed for an ESPN 30 for 30 film.

and 23 happens to be the number of the man drafted next. 2nd spot to 3rd spot = 23 too. Ha.

  • riggs

hopefully he gets traded to phoenix so the miracle doctors can work their magic on him.

  • Bruno

I feel bad for Oden not the blazers

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I doubt Oden’s career is over, he’ll get healthy eventually, just won’t have the same career we all expected from him.

  • http://theghostofroyhobbs.blogspot.com Mo Charlo

Who would have thought that Greg Oden would need to crash on Mike Conley’s couch?

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

What a bust! Signed, Roy Munson

  • thalilbigkahuna

Who’s talking about Kevin Durant not being able to bench 185 now?

  • John

You can’t help but feel bad for G.O. he will play again just not for Portland. Dude is only 22 he’ll eventually get his shot and hopefully stay healthy.

Agreed, Oden’s Career is far from over–he is a young center in a league desperate for size. He’ll just have to take a paycut wherever his next (first?) stop in the league is. Portland needs to renounce his rights this summer though.

  • ClydeSays

Bust to me implies he got a chance to play, but couldn’t compete. (ECurry, Darko, Kwame, etc). A career derailed by injury is too common & could happen to any athlete. Oden is still young enough to come back and be effective. Hopefully he rehabs successfully & returns to be an effective player in the League.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

DeJuan Blair has better knees than Greg Oden.

  • The Philosopher

I’ve said that it would behoove him to take this year off, anyway.
But, it is not looking good for him.
It always could be worse, though. If he is smart with his money, as Bryan Crawford pointed out, he should be fine long term.

  • reflex

Greg’s career IS over as much as I hate to say it, he’s had intensive surgery on 4 seperate occasions, that’s too much in such a short span, if he plays 100 gms from this point onwards I’ll be surprised. Luckily for him, he’s a legit 7 footer so some idiotic franchise like Memphis or Minnesota will probably max him out

  • Ivan

Go Find the right doctor Portland, saving one’s career is hell of a better thing to do than just dump him away

  • riggs

he is a legitimate bust for being the first pick in the first round, i used to defend him but i now realize the truth.

  • The D Train

I love when fans of teams like the f()ck-awful Knicks…who have been terrible for somewhere around 20 years…make fun of the Blazers for drafting Oden. When your top draft pick of the past decade is a soft, shooter who shoots like crap and has a bad back, you might want to lay off the snarky comments.

  • Overtime

This is such a shame, was such a fan of his at Ohio State.
Annoying thing is, people will call him a bust…but its not from laziness, or a bad work ethic or stuff with the law or anything. When he could get on the court he worked hard and he played wll, just unlucky he got so many injuries

  • Jose

I really would not be surprised if this dude cried his eyes out. hell i felt like shedding a tear. its really REALLY sad…dude needs to take a season off entirely after he heals to make sure he’s good. I think anyone in the L would give him a chance at the minimum salary. PHX, MIA, and OKC come to mind..if oden got healthy and he teamed w/ durant..dang..but thats a pipe dream

  • MUBWAR

82 in games in 3 years. What a joke. I don’t believe he is a bust because he is only 22 but time is running out. If he doesn’t come back healthy for an entire season then we can call him that. 1 MORE CHANCE ODEN.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Really sad news for both Oden and Portland. It’s too bad everything happened the way it did, but once he’s healthy I think he’ll find a new home in the NBA. I’m pulling for him.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

bring him to phoenix, the medical staff will salvage his career, you’ll get him for pennys on the dollar and he will be a top 10 center. He is 22 people, still the average age of a rookie, one more year is not going to change much.

  • http://www.nobulljive.com Enigmatic

D Train – to be fair, the Knicks haven’t had a chance to draft very high because their pick usually belongs to someone else. As Bulls fans, I think we need to be nicer to Knicks fans, after all they gave us Joakim Noah :)

  • MUBWAR

THEY GAVE YOU NOAH AND THEY KEPT CURRY. WHAT A BUNCH OF FOOLS…

  • http://theurbangriot.com The Nupe

With his size, he will get another shot somewhere. But he’s likely seen his biggest contract already. Even when healthy he wasn’t all that effective and you just add into the equation if he’ll ever be able to play a season (even a half season). I feel bad for the Blazers organization, they dumped a lot of money on him (in salary and rehab etc) and really didn’t get anything in return. I hope he heals and is able to contribute in the future.

  • Bobby

Here’s to hoping that Oden has a Grant Hill-esque return. Good luck to him.

Sam Bowie curse anyone? Not a Portland fan but I’ve always said you the draft best available talent over team needs.

YEAH IAMORANGE4EVER, YOU A LOSER DUDE, LOL AT YO A$$ AND YOUR TEAM´S LOSING A$$

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

    end of the line gramps

  • Maurice Bobb

I just can’t help but feel for this kid. I mean, I know it’s a one in a million shot to get to the L, but this kid made it and had the “talent” but his body has/had other plans. I wish him the best, whether that involves lacing ‘em up in the NBA or not…

  • unrel

went from the next bill russel to the next sam bowie.. get healthy, kid…

  • Cizzo

He still has a basketball career ahead ofvhim, but he will make scraps n comparison to what he could of potentially made. That’s the only major setback in his young career…..

  • All Day

@Bobby: There’s a distinct difference between Grant Hill and Greg Oden. Grant was a very durable player until he fractured his foot. Greg has been injury prone his entire life…remember he missed a number of games in college, due to his hand injury…the reality is that Greg is injury prone and will always be injury prone.

  • JD

Its kinda sad, a team which a couple of years ago was being talked about as becoming a dynasty now has its future lying in tatters they’ll just have to get another guy in or settle for being a playoff team

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The only thing he’ll ever have in common with the great Bill Russell is liquid meals.

  • TheNightWatch*8*

I like Greg Oden. iHope he gets better.

  • pistol

I bet Portland never, ever draft a big man at #1 again! Never, ever, never!!

  • last dance

looooooooooool……. that was one funny comment made by Bryan Crawford

  • Exile

    No luck. Get better G.O.

  • Bobby

@ All day – I don’t disagree, just wishing the guy all the best.

  • http://slamonline.com JJAkroyd

Why are people flat out attacking the dude? He was never healthy in his entire NBA career, how did he have a chance to prove himself. Have some sympathy… If he gets back on track, give him a few years to develop (like most bigs), I’m sure he’ll be fine. Maybe not the dominant force we were expecting, but still a great centre. Maybe the Blazers made the wrong pick, but nearly every team would have picked the big man first. You can teach fundamentals, skills and knowledge, but you can’t teach height.

  • donnie lighto

I feel bad, but Greg Oden is TRULY injury prone. damn, damn, damn. maybe his knees were just made a little weaker than everyone elses.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Clyde

Greg Oden’s legit, it sucks to see him in this situation. Bring him to Phx, we’ll fix him lol.

  • Roy

the thunder should sign him to a cheap 2 year deal in my opinion

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

I refuse to feel sorry for a guy who essentially won the sports lottery. Oden should go back to school and get a bachelor’s degree, and make something of himself using that muscle between his ears. Perhaps he could become a color commentator for the Blazers so they can get rid of that loud mouth Mike Rice. lol

  • http://www.slamonline.com Clyde

He’d make a great commentator! lol

  • Pharoah

Great tweet on Greg Oden @alpha1906 Greg Oden has the face of a sixty year old man, and the knees of that sixty year old mans dad.
