Is Allen Iverson ‘Broke’?

The Philly Inquirer travels to Turkey, and after some sleuthing, it uncovers that the hoopla around A.I.’s arrival is quite small, and that Iverson might be in bad financial shape: “The 76ers’ former all-everything guard is broke – by all accounts except his own – and playing here in Istanbul for a number of reasons, none of which is to become an ambassador for Turkey’s solid, but often overlooked, professional league … ‘It’s not a problem, it’s not a problem – money,’ Iverson said at an Oct. 29 news conference in New York. ‘Obviously if it was about money, I would jump out there and say, ‘You want me to come off the bench? How much money are you paying?’ It wouldn’t be a big deal. It’s not about money or anything like that.’ A member of one NBA front office, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the subject matter, said that prior to last season, a member of Iverson’s family called to inquire about a contract for Iverson, explaining that Iverson owed that person money and would be unable to pay without a contract. A similar source explained that Iverson is broke, plain and simple. Over his NBA career, including his lucrative deal with Reebok, Iverson made more than $100 million.”

  • Jas

I find it hard to believe he’s broke.

This should surprise no one. The way Iverson has always lived is like there’s no tomorrow. And I’d would bet he has never take care of the money he was winning.

  • http://bluefont.com Hisham

anybody seen that game on NBATV yesterday? i’m curious as to how he did. Maybe someone could post a recap, SLAM?

  • thecontender

I doubt he is broke. Like he said, why wouldn’t he just come off the bench for money?

  • jay rose

Hate to read bad things about the Guy I grew up watching and idolized. Wish A.I. the best

don’t bother, he scored 2 points and embarrassed himself. He’s so out of the game that he can’t even play competitively in Europe.

I am not surprised he is broke, if he is broke. The “life” will do it to you. We see it a plenty.
And, it is like, when one has a certain kind of peoples in their circle, it is very difficult. They feel like they helped one get to a certain point, and they feel entitled to something that they are not even working for. Even the people who did not help said subject in any way.
    Maurice Clarrett.
Many of times, you are supporting people who have do not have your best interests at heart. It is really stressful. And, if you’ve watched Iverson closely enough, you can see in his eyes the stress. Even during a 50 point game. A damn shame…
But, I do not feel sorry for him. He is quite cagey, and it does/did not have to be this way.

  • The Philosopher

He probably owes a couple of his family clowns for beating people up in bars and casinos.

  • slamfan4life

Hell no, dude still has a lot of houses and has $$$ from RbK

  • All Day

It amazes me how so many people don’t believe a professional athlete could ever go broke…how many stories have we read that involved former athletes being broke and/or filing for bankruptcy. People athletes can and do go broke, if their finances are mismanaged!

  • All Day

Antoine Walker is a former NBA player that’s broke..he also made over 100 million dollars during his NBA career…

We likely talkin’ ’bout liquidity problems.

  • B

Didn’t he sign a “lifetime” deal with Reebok?

  • tavoris

@B-yes. This story is bull’ish. Dude get’s $6mil every year he’s playing professionally ANYWHERE. Plus, he has some very lucrative business establishments in the 215 and 757.

  • tavoris

@IAMORANGE4EVER-a cashflow issue is not BROKE.
Antoine Walker didn’t have any money coming in other than the NBA salary. AI is one of the more prolific endorsers in the NBA’s recent history.

  • Cizzo

    Damn A.I. it’s really over!

  • Miss J.D.

Quite frankly, this story is yet another fabrication by David Stern to continue to discredit this man in addition to black-balling him from the league. Allen Iverson has carried his rachet ass family from jump so who could he possibly borrow from? In addition to Reebok ends, his current contract contains numerous bonuses and other incentives including free housing, luxury cars, tuition for his children to attend private school, and he also receives a percentage of the advertising and gate dollars, in addition to a tax-free salary, so this story is suspect fabrication at best. Kick rocks David Stern!

  • Still ballin

I didn’t hear him asking for money from anybody.. He’s not broke.. That story is bs!!!

  • unrel

what’s david stern have to do with the Philly Inquirer?

  • bird

Kick a man when he’s down! Thats how the media works!!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@Hisham- He had 2 points in a win.. Man, I feel if a guy like AI is still playing organized ball, it should be in the NBA.. I understand he is quite a diva, and comes with alot of baggage, but of our 30 teams, seriously, not 1 had interest in him??

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

Just cause he’s not broke, doesn’t mean he don’t need the money

  • Drexyl

Wow..it’s a damn shame after all the brother has done for the NBA he couldn’t get a job.He is/was blackballed!

  • ClydeSays

Does the Players Association offer these guys any kind of guidance? AI & Walker are the 1st multi-millionaire players to go broke…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

more then 60% of all american professional athletes have spent all of their career earning within 6 years of retiring.

  • ish

all i have to say is look how many idiots just believed what said by some reporter said. so u cant tell me u fools aint drinkin the fool-aid when it comes to stories about AI. its like u got all happy because u heard a story about him being broke. if u tell a lie long enuff people will believe it. i mean look how long it took people realize that bush ahd been lying to them all these years and then all of a sudden stop likin the dude. people learn to think for yourselves and stop being programmed by the media

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

The truth is usually somewhere in the middle…
Although I will say that running that tidbit about the family member was a lowblow.

  • BostonBaller

I don’t think he’s broke like we know people who are broke..if he’s broke at all. If this story is made up then it’s sad on the writers part and if he really is “broke” then it’s another sad case of an athlete being dumb. Have a blessed Thanksgiving and if you can, drop some food by a food pantry or volunteer somewhere…

  • ethan

i dont get how an unretired proffesional athlete can b considerd broke with all the money they get

  • The Philosopher

    “Hello, this is Iverson’s kin.
Look, I’m calling to see if you can give my man Allen a job. He owes me some money. And, I want my money.
Now, he’ll come off the bench for the amount he owes me. Can you help us out???”
If something like that even remotely transpired in that sense, I mean, what gives?
That is some crackhead sh1t, y’all.

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

Allenp: It’s not low, this article is just an Allen Iverson article.

  • tavoris

AI has made roughly $155 mil in NBA salary in his career. In addition, u can tack on another $80 mil from Reebok. That alone should tell u how much “fact checking” this hack reporter did.

  • AI TO MIAMI!!!

  • Stillballin

I don’t care if people say bad stuff about him.. In my eyes he still a legend!!

  • baller

AI debut with besiktas in the turkish league.

    1-6, 2 points, 0 assists

and people are wondering why the coach only played him in limited minutes.

  • http://lenard.com The Lenard

If Chuck is broke…that is sad. If he’s not broke and the media is making him look broke, that’s more sad. It would not surprise me if he was broke. With the impending divorce, his so-called family members, his gambling issues…it wouldnt take long. I dont believe he’s broke like Antoine Walker. He may owe some people money but I’m sure he has some. The question is how much more money does he have than what he owes? Seems like someone close to him would have stepped up and said something or a business manager or something would have pointed this out to him.

  • raddface

Subtract taxes, agents, managers, acountants, family and his own lifestyle and its easy to be broke. Most atheletes lose their cash when they divorce and stop playing ball. Its obvious that most of you guys who think otherwise have never lived in a high tax bracket.

  • Dhughes

This guy was a baller shot caller man I wish he could come back to the NBA he’s the best short guard to ever play the game people don’t want to be steve francis or stephon marbury they want to be him. He’s been scoring leader a couple times I think…
