Joakim Noah: Not a Kevin Garnett Fan

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

KG‘s enemies list seems to be growing on a weekly basis. It’s something that I don’t think he actually minds all that much.

Joakim Noah is the latest to publicly express his dislike of Garnett (who he idolized growing up), calling the Celtics’ emotional leader “mean” and “ugly”.

Yes, Joakim Noah called someone else “ugly”.

ESPN has the quotes:

Noah has gone from a fan who once had a Garnett poster in his room to someone who probably has a Garnett photo on his dartboard. “Kevin Garnett will not — will not — get a Christmas gift from me,” Noah said with a tinge of humor Wednesday on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000. “I don’t like him.”

The feud started, or perhaps escalated, during last season’s playoffs. After Garnett was suspended for throwing an elbow at Quentin Richardson, Noah — who was in Cleveland playing the Cavaliers — chimed in that Garnett was a “dirty player.” The most recent incident was Friday night in Boston when Noah received a technical foul, and afterward said of Garnett: “He is who he is.”

“He’s a very mean guy,” Noah said Wednesday. “Where’s the love? None at all. Ugly, too.”

Noah goes on to make the same accusation of KG that all of his detractors seem to: he picks on younger, weaker players. Oh, and guys from Europe.

The Bulls and Celtics don’t play again until December 3rd (and hopefully, in the Playoffs next Spring.) Something tells me Kevin Garnett won’t acquiesce and become a sweeter, more sensitive guy on the court.

It’s similar to the response many white people have to be intellectually bested by a black person. No matter what we all say, we listen and accept certain stereotypes, and use them to influence our worldview.
But, it’s not just white cats who get this. As a big dude, I’m automatically assumed to be garbage and it’s been that way since I started hooping. It’s only until I start doing my thing that stuff changes.

You’re a big guy Allen? For some reason I pictured you looking kind of like a mixture of Spike Lee and Scoop Jackson. I’m being serious, not trying to be an idiot.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I played offensive tackle in high school.

  • JTaylor21

AllenP, by “big” do you mean Sherron Collins/Eddy Curry big or shannon brown big? Also people need to realize that no one is saying that players shouldn’t trash-talk because it’s part of the game and we all do it but what I’m saying is that why is KG always talk sh*t to himself and cursing all the time? You can see that ish on TV and it just looks like he’s a mental patient out there talking to himself.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Offensive tackle big. Like fat dude big. I’ve been a fat dude since I was five years old. Never stopped me from hooping though, the trick is just playing with skinny cats all the time.

  • Hammer

Yeah trash talk can b fun. Me and 1 of my homies used 2 trash talk non-stop. Wether it was 1 on 1 or 5 on 5 w/the rest of r,we always jawed @ each other. NUTHIN was off limits as 2 what could b said. We would go @ it all the time on the court. And we would never give each other credit 4 winning or doin well, but deep down we had respect 4 each other’s game. We certainly brought out the best n 1 another. It was hella fun

So people think KG’s a punk because he doesn’t get into fights? If you get into your opponents head so much that he’s no longer 100% focused on basketball, that’s great. How do you help you team when you get tossed from the game?

  • Hammer

Co-sign lahuey. It takes smarts. Dennis rodman was gr8 @ that. Zo knows all about that. Hahaha

  • flipnoyce

I play so much better when someone is talking that trash. It brings out the warrior in me. As the saying goes Don’t Get Mad, Get Even!!! I remember when Chuck called out Yao Ming in his first couple of years saying that Yao couldn’t score more than 30 pts or something, but Yao showed up and CHUCK loss a bet.Which was to kiss a Donkeys ASS. LET YOUR GAME SPEAK VOLUME RATHER THAN WORDS PLAY YOUR GAME!!!! that is my motto whem I’m hoopin in the aspalt or in the hardwood against anybody. Friends or no friends, I just play my game!

I feel you on that allen. although, id say your analogy is flawed. Its a very common view across all races, that an avg lookn white dude will be a worse hooper than an avg lookn black dude. Whereas, anyone who believes black ppl are intellectually inferior are just racist a$sholes. I see your point, but the comparison in not apt….. ….. ….Jtaylor, DO NOT put sherron in the same category as eddy curry. One guy came in kinda out of shape and is improving, the other is a lardhippo.

NBK: There really isn’t any trash talking in MMA, there isn’t. You don’t watch MMA and you probably don’t watch boxing outside of the stupid hype pre-fight sh*t they always throw out.
Fists always end trash talk. Maybe you grew up in a softer area. It’s fine.

    Cosign Noah

  • Heals

    And the beat goes on…

@jeffH: leading the league in rebounding because your team has no one else other than taj gibson to do it is not really something to praise him for.

  • rob

boston is winning so all ya’ll shut up bout garnett. he can do whtever. theyre winning, his attitude is jus his way of expressing toughness” the end

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

come on riggs – you’re stretching now trying to devalue Noah. What does it matter who else on his team can/can’t rebound? He’s outrebounding his opponents, not his teammates. Deng and Gibson are both good rebounders anyway,

  • The Philosopher

    I never talked trash. Never.
Even when one was talking trash to me. This is basketball I am referring to.
I was a pretty good ball player.
Could have done some things if I were not so focused on women and money.
Anyways, I didn’t mind the talk. I’ve always just kept it moving. Usually, the talk would cease after a while, anyway.
And, the main reason that I did not talk trash is because, I can get really offensive lyrically. The trolling that I do up here is child’s play compared to what I am capable of.
    Allenp sparks the topic…

    I just know I’m a Noah fan.

@EtheKnicksfan: itchbays??? Faaantastic word. Sitting in the office and i laughed so loud, my assistant jumped in to ask ‘whats up?’.
I was quite the baller back in Europe, 6’2″, fast reactions, had my elbow at rim height at times and leading shotblocker on my teams from age 18-24.
Also could jam like it was nobody’s business and i always got the assignment to guard the other team’s top player, 1-4, sometimes even some 5′s. Like Sparker, i had a serious temper/big time emotions and i talked LOADS of trash. I hardly ever got T’d up cause i always knew how far i could take things w/o hurting my team.

Some of my best games have been me and opponents yapping away and throwing our best moves at one another, then shaking hands after the game with a smile of acknowledgement. I LOVE KG’s emotional outbursts (sure they aren’t for young ears) but these guys yapping about him in the L need to grow some thicker skin. I’m sure they’ve heard worse over the course of their careers.

There also are differences in on/offcourt behavior. In ’07 when the C’s were in Rome for Europelive, my girl and i went to the player’s hotel one morning and got pics with nearly all the players (Raps & C’s), KG was cracking jokes with us like he’d known us forever (9am, pre-practice, some grumpy players in the mix) and a few days later we shared a table in the Hotel lobby for after practice drinks.
The man is as cool as they come in the NBA in my book (close 2nd to Dirk imo)

  • Harlem_World

Sports is competition. Competition is about getting that edge. Trash talk is a game inside the game – if you can mentally break your opponent and get an advantage from it, you do it. Guys who are weak enough to be effected by it in a negative way don’t belong in the winners circle. Harsh? No, just true.

Darksaber is on some paparazzi shtt

  • http://Www.fiba.com Darksaber

    @Tarzan: Woooord.
Nah, i’ve been blessed to meet a few of those guys the last 3 years due to my move from EU to Asia, and some luck of course..

  • K.a.

Lol allenp’s the trick is to play with skinny cats comment. Ive played with guys who trash talk and its really a double edge sword. You can psyche other but can do it urself at same time. If u dont have the mouth just gotta try ur best to not let them get in ur head. But dont be a punk azz biyatch by suddenly talking when u got the upper hand.

  • K.a.

That said i used to love KG but now i think hes a punk. He needs to stop picking on smaller guys.

  • http://www.bunzl.com.au OZ Baller

    KG is a biatch

  • benno
