Joakim Noah: Not a Kevin Garnett Fan

by Marcel Mutoni / @marcel_mutoni

KG‘s enemies list seems to be growing on a weekly basis. It’s something that I don’t think he actually minds all that much.

Joakim Noah is the latest to publicly express his dislike of Garnett (who he idolized growing up), calling the Celtics’ emotional leader “mean” and “ugly”.

Yes, Joakim Noah called someone else “ugly”.

ESPN has the quotes:

Noah has gone from a fan who once had a Garnett poster in his room to someone who probably has a Garnett photo on his dartboard. “Kevin Garnett will not — will not — get a Christmas gift from me,” Noah said with a tinge of humor Wednesday on “The Waddle & Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000. “I don’t like him.”

The feud started, or perhaps escalated, during last season’s playoffs. After Garnett was suspended for throwing an elbow at Quentin Richardson, Noah — who was in Cleveland playing the Cavaliers — chimed in that Garnett was a “dirty player.” The most recent incident was Friday night in Boston when Noah received a technical foul, and afterward said of Garnett: “He is who he is.”

“He’s a very mean guy,” Noah said Wednesday. “Where’s the love? None at all. Ugly, too.”

Noah goes on to make the same accusation of KG that all of his detractors seem to: he picks on younger, weaker players. Oh, and guys from Europe.

The Bulls and Celtics don’t play again until December 3rd (and hopefully, in the Playoffs next Spring.) Something tells me Kevin Garnett won’t acquiesce and become a sweeter, more sensitive guy on the court.

League gettin soft. Back in the day at ruckers they would have a dang cookout after a badass dunk. The cat on the mike would trash talk and he wasnt even playin. Screamin to cats they cant guard you starts early man, it helps the sorta good cats beat the pretty good cats if they do talk it right. Like a boxers stare, pure intimidation. You only have to back it up if runnin your mouth doesnt work. Always bring your A game suckas.

  • MUBWAR

I bet half these people trying KG wouldn’t dare try in his Wolves days. Now that he got a little older, lost explosiveness and that the stats went down, everyone is on his d***. come y’all, give the HOF a chance and let bark till he retires.

  • Sparker

allenp, i talked a lot of trash too, but it was (more or less) because i couldn’t control my temper. i also felt guilty about it afterwards. and even though i had plenty of success in sports, i always thought the guys who stayed cool had it figured out. i was a team captain/ mvp in two sports, and won hs city championships in a third; but i think i would been a better athlete if i had mastered my emotions. don’t you feel that way at all?

  • underdog

Where is the love? Not on the court son…

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

let them know AllenP…. they are all sounding soft. Man the hell up

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Who cares, I have talked trash and others. But KG seems like a PUNK, thats why people don’t like him. ALLENP, you sound like you could back it up, but KG seems like a quiet dude, trying to be hard on the court. He still picks on lower tier guys and lets see if he goes after Noah, because Noah would be the HELL out of KG. BOOK IT!!

  • TrailBlazing&SportingLisbon

KG is a pu$$yfied insecure pr1ck, and everyone knows it..fake toughness, fake intensity and an all around a$$hole.

  • Simon

cosign sparker 100%. the Talking, the uncontrolled temper, the guilt, a lil success. i was just like that. so i can Def. understand allenp but it still sounded like He was Proud to Be remembered As a dick. i always admired the Silent Killers that don’t Talk much and just let their Game do the yapping. im sure sparker would agree!?

  • Sparker

um, noah doesn’t scare anyone either

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Sparker
Nah, I feel like I started dialing back after getting tossed from the game because in Louisiana sports you get banned for the whole year if you get tossed from two games for unsportsmanlike conduct. And, I think it hurt me more than it helped me.
Talking trash is fun if you’re confident you can back it up. I don’t always talk trash, but sometimes I do. And it adds pressure to your game, and that pressure is cool sometimes. It makes me work harder. Some people don’t need that. Good for them.
Hell, you see the trash my brother and I used to talk when we would spank folks in Taboo. People did not want to play with us after one time. I just like the feeling of talking trash and then backing it up.

  • Sparker

on the other hand, both are 7 footers who could crush 99% of you dudes like bugs. so there’s that.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Seed
I don’t know KG off the court. I don’t think you have to be a thug off the court to talk trash on the court. I was by no means a “thug” or “hard.” I wasn’t a punk, but I wasn’t hard. But, between the lines I was yapping, particularly if I felt like I was killing the person lined up across from me. I felt like they needed to know what I was doing to them from my own mouth, and I DO think that it affects the play of weakminded people.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Michael Jordan and Larry Bird are the most ruthless trash talkers in NBA history. But does anyone even know about it? NOPE – BOOK IT SEED, trash talk is part of the game, always has been, always will be. These sissy’s complaining about it to the media are bad for the sport, not the other way around.

  • Sparker

allenp, you and your bro talking taboo trash is a funny, funny thing to imagine

  • http://bassbesteck@wordpress.com Bassbesteck

i always do laugh at guys when i cross them over… cause I’m like 90 Kilos (dunno how many pounds that is) and 5’10”, so to get crossed over by me is pretty lame^^ but it happens relatively often and guys get oissed because of that and tend to get more agressive and then get crossed over a little more, cause they press too much… so it works without calling them out.
On the other hand: why not? Get the guy pissed at you, make him try harder. If you’re unlucky, he does and just owns you. But in 8/10 times, they will get worse, cause they rush… just my 2 cents

  • EtheKnickfan

Dont want trash talk? try tennis itchbays!

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

@riggs – noah gets back at kg during games. I don’t think he’s a b*tch like charlie. And I listened to the entire interview, it was light hearted and he was sort of led down the path to say what he said by the interviewers. I don’t thik its Noah complaining just to complain. trash talk if you can back it up. 15 and 10 to me is not backing it up…those are baby davis type numbers. KG is the 4th option on that team yet he’s the one doing the most talking. He comes off looking like a b*tch. he didn’t look like on ein minnesota because his game backed it up much much more.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

The thing about talking trash, is I have seen it lead to things of the court, so if you are going talk on the field or court, then you need to be able to back it up, if you are a thug or not. I can’t stand when people front on the court or field then get off, and forget some people don’t like it. KG seems like a herb, so to me one day, someone is going to get him off the court and I CAN”T WAIT. BOOK IT!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

My homies from college still joke because whenever I would cross somebody up I would yell “Stupid” before shooting. Every time.
Y’all people who don’t talk trash are missing out. It’s so much fun.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I understand and appreciate taht last comment Seed. You’re right.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Sigh…I’m always the guy getting picked out for the guy to talk trash to. So I always get a little dirty with guys like Allenp.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Just looking at what KG does offensively as far as stats, is wrong.
He sets the most picks, creates offense from his action with Rondo on the pick and pop, but also is a danger on the roll play. He is a great passer from the high post.
And he is the defensive anchor. Y’all are selling KG short. He ain’t the best power forward in the league, but he’s no bum. Some of y’all love to use pace in other arguments, so consider KG’s numbers according to the Celtics’ pace which has to be one of the slowest in the league.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Kap
I’m not like that now because I’m not that good anymore. Now I’m the old head who does the little things and keeps quiet.

  • http://Mrjones21901@aol.com Run’n'Gun219

I think gary payton should hold a trash talking seminar for young and european player. Because he was the best. Especially when his mouth would go to the side

  • http://twitter.com/HarryByrdMan44 LA Huey

KG’s an ass. I like that. He picks on weaker players because they’re the ones that ish-talking affects negatively. You talk ish to Kobe, Wade, Dwight, Artest, Big Ben, etc, and you’re likely to get embarassed in one form or another. So KG may be an a-hole or bully but he’s a smart one.

  • PapaBearATL

Psychological warfare! Your opponent is to busy being mad about whatever you said or did to focus on the days, month’s years of training that would actually help him compete. It’s part of being competitive whether its on the court or 2K11. Who is the last humble athlete you can think of? How many pro’s will say that someone is flat out better than them? If it trickles off the court then that person is an oversensitive @ss clown, not a thug and should probably step their game up, lol!

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

No one of those two have an upside in this rivalry right now. They are both complementary elements to their team pushing everybody with their actions. If it is scoring, rebounding or talking they both do the same things.
That is why I don’t understand Noah complaining.
If he would have played basketball in the 90′s he would have to face players playing a lot uglier than Garnett.
And who says Garnett couldn’t back his trash talk up isn’t understanding the game.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I trash talked during organic chemistry and physics because I’m not that athletic.

  • bnets

KG is sweet off the court, not on the court so deal with it Noah haha

  • http://klatschendom.wordpress.com/ speedy

Noah lost an important ball at the end of the last game against the C’s. And it was Garnett who slapped it out of his hands.

  • Michael

KG is an ass but whats new. As others have said MJ Bird payton were all asses too. Its a part of what made them so good. These young players need to harden up for real.

  • flipnoyce

If you want to be the BEST at what YOU do, then YOU have to beat the Best of someone at what they do!!! I’d rather be pick on by someone who’s a hall of famer like KG rather than be pick on by CV or Pachulia, or anyone that is not relevant, me included and the rest of the people who subscribe for slam who can only talk that trash behind a monitor and a key board talking about how tough they are. I bet some of the people that be talking trash in here DONT EVEN PLAY BALL or WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN THEIR FRIENDS.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I’m a super nice guy and I know how it feels when people talk ish for no reason even your own teammates. Everyone doesn’t have it inside of them to be asses or accept someone being an ass to them.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

I’m more of a let sleeping dogs lie kind of guy. Yeah trash talk can be used as a self motivator. It could also motivate the other guy. You can be concentrating on it so much that it takes you out of your own game too. Whatever – like it’s been said already, it all depends on personality. All I know is if I’m Ben Gordon and KG is yelling in my face, while in a suit no less, I’m back handing him across his pointy head.
As far as KD doing all the things that don’t show up on the stats – I think he’s good, but some of that stuff gets exaggerated. I think he looks like he’s doing so much more because he celebrates every play he makes.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

    KD=KG

  • barnabusb

    Kap wins this thread.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

Whenever I talk trash I just feel bad for the recipient…and they are usually my friends…so I try not to…but it IS alot of fun. ANd when people talk trash to me…that is when I play my best…cause I want them to eat their God D@mned words! AllenP, you are a sage, my friend.

  • Jose

Naw naw Joakim said that KG was ugly-ing up his team, the organization and the game itself” and Noah would never be offensive to those less pretty as he knows many ppl in that situation

  • http://sdjfklf.com Jukai

Allenp: I wont have a problem with you trash talking as long as you don’t have a problem with me punching you in the face when you cross the line. KG annoys me cause the dude will talk smack all day but once things get physical, he runs away like a woman.
Maurice Lucas hit it on the ball, all this trash talk nonsense would be OVER with if it was still a 50 dollar fine for hitting a dude.

  • Riggs

oh you mean like how anderson verajao gets praised for getting under peoples skin and then they get the tech while he walks away? its the same damn thing

  • Jeff H

You can say whatever you want about Noah but right now he is leading the league in rebounding at over 15 a game. Noah>Garnett

  • tRay

People need to really man up trash talking is to get you mad and off your game and obviously KG has mastered that so if you got a problem with dude then bust his a$$ on the court like Peeler did.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Trash Talking happens in every sport. Not matter how much hitting is involved. If anyone thinks fear of being punch would stop trash talking then you clearly don’t understand the male psyche in a competitive or high tension situation. If physical violence was the solution to trash talking then MMA fighters and Boxers would be mutes. And the only reason this is even an issue is because the people that can’t take/deal with the trash talk wine about it to the media. Then you people who have probably never done a thing in your life about someone talking trash act like you would do something when in all reality you probably talk trash and do nothing in just the same way in your everyday lives, whether it be playing video games or beating your siblings in shutes and latters and don’t even realize it.

  • Blackphantom

This doesn’t surprise me, I wouldn’t like someone that’s a little bit away from being crazy and that I’ve lost to twice in the playoffs either

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Trash talking can be fun, but you must know your audience. Example, a few years ago, some friends and I ran at a full gym. A couple friends of mine were talking lots of trash, and dudes on the otther team were getting salty cuz of that and we were killin em. I was the last one to leave and some fools tried me, I had to put two of em on the floor. . Another time I was playin pickup with a bunch of dudes at a court. Being the only white guy, they didnt expect much, but I was killing them, esp this one guy. I hit turnarounds in his face all game and just generally abused him. He got pissed and punted the ball onto a roof. Everyone was clowning him. Again, you must know ur audience. My favorite was of trash talking is after I block a shot, I give them the mutombo finger wag, and say in my best deke voice, get that shii out of here

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

It’s funny that they tried the white guy… It really is.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

While on the subject, I must give credit to the best trash talker of all times. Not mike, larry, or the glove. All hail the LOUISVILLE LIP!!!! If you dont know who that is, slap yourself. This man was, by far, the greatest trash talker in the history of human language.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

My estimation of the first trash talking in human history: ….. Uug: hey oog, u throw spear like girl. Oog: thats why oog pee in uug mammoth soup last night.

  • http://zoran_dakovic@hotmail.com RickyRude

Adding fuel to the fire, young man… just what the doctor ordered.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Allenp, in that particular instance, I was just the last one to leave, get some water, chill on a bench for a min. And I didnt even talk much trash that time. …. Its certainly a different experience being the only white guy hoopn with 20+ black dudes. Although, usually, I knew a few of them. Sometimes nearly all and sometimes none. As you might imagine, I wasnt passed to often, so I would really crash the boards and take it all the way. Then theyd see I could play and id get more involved in the offene. …. Its funny cuz when I played well, I was larry bird or kirk hinrich. But lawd help me if I was havn a bad shooting day, id be pat garrity, keith van horn, or just plain ol ‘sorry ass whiteboy’. Interesting how most black dudes think losing to a white dude is exponentially worse and more embarrassing than losing to a black dude. Ive seen some funny stuff as a result of this dynamic.
