Michael Heisley Not Listening to Criticism of Mike Conley’s Deal

The contract may be awful, but at the end of the day, it’s Mr. Heisley’s money and he can burn it all he wants. From FanHouse: “Heisley showed his confidence in his current team by signing Conley to a five-year, $40 million (with $5 million additional in possible incentives) contract extension reached just before Monday’s midnight deadline. However, Conley’s deal, which begins next season, has been deemed excessive by some. Heisley didn’t want to speak about Conley’s contract, saying, ”m not going to justify or listen to criticisms and so on of what we did. It’s a negotiation and we made the negotiation and it is what it is.” However, Heisley was willing to speak about the improvement the fourth-year point guard has made on the court. ‘If you go back and look at Mike Conley the last month of last year, he really came alive,” Heisley said. “When we drafted him, he was a very, very good defensive point guard in the league putting pressure on the guy with the ball. And I think he’s been much more cautious. I think he’s finally coming into his own. I think we now have the player we drafted. I would have liked to have had him two years ago, but we didn’t. Lionel Hollins (the Memphis coach), who was a point guard (on 1977 champion Portland and played in the 1980 and 1982 Finals with Philadelphia), basically has told me over and over and over again that Conley is going to be a good point guard, one of the better point guards in this league. That why we’ve got confidence. If you had to go up to somebody and ask them whether a guy’s going to be good point guard in this league, it helps that the guy that’s telling you was (an NBA champion with three overall Finals appearances).’”

    ^ Mike Contract?

  • Sparty’s Law

Career averages of 11ppg and 4.7apg in just over 30 minutes on 44% shooting. He must have one hell of a good agent.

rajon rondo is only making 2 mil more a year than conley… i say he needs to fire his agent

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Michael, you are going to be not listening for a long-ass time. This contract was atrocious.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

Or Rondo realises that accepting less money means better players around him.

Who would’ve thought on draft day that he’d get the extension and his former teamate Oden has to prove his worth?

  • http://google c_cantrell

ha if i was in the nba i would be droppin my agent right on his ass and trying to get conleys agent

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

And to put things in perspective, here are the player that are earning within the range of what conley will be paid next season: Jameer Nelson, Devin Harris, Jason Kidd, Andre Miller, Rajon Rondo, and Steve Nash. Will you trade any of these guys straight up for mike conley? Hell to the NO.

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

If I was a billionaire memphis fan, I would pay some random guy 40mill for 5 years to stand next to heisley and shout obscenities at him all day. And that would be money well spent.

  • http://google c_cantrell

so so so so stupid.. he is makin as much as a 2 time mvp, 2 future hall of famers, 2 former assists champs? wtf!!?

  • MikeC.

the rest of the owners must be super pissed at Heisley. He’s giving ridiculous contracts out that undermine the league’s message about financial restraint. And one good month!?! Jerome James had a good month once too.

  • http://google c_cantrell

this is so ridiculous i know i keep saying its stupid but i really want yal all to know that this freakin idiotic!! i can see why they signed gay for so much cause the skys the limit for him (they still overpaid him tho) but this deal with conley is worse than how much the hawks paid for joe johnson.. absolutely ridiculous.. i could be a better gm than this dude

  • tavoris

@Krishan-I wouldn’t even trade mario chalmers, carlos arroyo, kyle lowry, Jordan farmar, or cj watson, or sundiata gaines for conley either.

  • CAPTAIN HINDSIGHT

GRIZZ SHOULD HAVE DRAFTED TYREKE, WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT TEAM FOR OVER A DECADE.

  • http://slamonline.com JL

i don’t know but he’s playing pretty well these first few games, at the expense of OJ Mayo nonetheless. You have too many players who can be stars (well really all 2nd or 3rd stars) on the memphis team. Not sure how they can keep everyone happy.

  • MikeC.

@JL – if the Griz had smart management and ownership, they’d package two of those lower-tier stars with a pick and trade for a bonafide star who can carry their team. If they had a true star, they could slide Gay into the role of overpaid secondary player and roll with it.

I’m watching out for when Goran Dragic gets his 80 million dollar contract offer now…

I’m so glad this horrible organization left Vancouver.

  • Seven Duece

I hope Conley has thick skin, because he’s going to be hearing about this until he makes the All Star team… LOL, I couldn’t even type that without laughing!

  • EJ

Maybe he should listen to the critics.

  • B-E-Z

Were missing the funny part of this deal….Last night the GRIZZ lose to the Warriors who are playing without Curry right now lol….So you give this guy that contract & he can’t even lead his team to a victory over the Warriors without Curry
