Post Up: Mavs Trip Up Hornets

Also: Mike Vick, Serge Ibaka, Hakim Warrick, and Darko!

by Adam Figman | @afigman

A mild set of Monday night hoops. Out of the seven games, three were showdowns between potential Western Conference postseason opponents—so let’s start with the other four and then move to those. Cool?

Charlotte 113, Minnesota 110

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t pulling for everyone’s new favorite underdog (Minny), but the Cats did get a much-needed home W after dropping four straight in Charlotte, so props extended. Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace both scored 26 in 40-plus minutes, while DJ Augustin (9 points, 11 dimes) and Tyrus Thomas (20 points, 10 boards) were both big factors. For the TWolves, Michael Beasley’s strong streak continued, as he scored 28, while Darko Milicic (hey!) went for 13 and 12. Minnesota will look to bounce back at home against the Clips tomorrow.

Orlando 89, Memphis 72

In last night’s biggest mess of a game, the Grizz shot 36 percent and the Magic shot 44 percent, though the 8 percent separation made all the difference and Orlando won easily. Dwight Howard (18 and 14) and Vince Carter (19 points) led the team, while Marc Gasol was the high scorer from Memphis’ sad output, with 14. Not exactly one to tell the grandkids about. The victors moved to 7-3, and now have sole possession of first in the Southeast.

Golden State 101, Detroit 97

Down 31 earlier in the game, the Pistons stormed back and were down just two with six seconds remaining—but it was too little (though still kind of a lot), too late, and some GSW free throws sealed it. Monta Ellis’ (27 points) scoring streak continued, and Steph Curry’s 21-5-4 stat line helped the team jump ahead in the first half. Charlie Villanueva led Detroit with 18 in the losing effort. Also, Tayshaun Prince and coach John Kuester were going at it early in the game—so we’ll have to keep on eye out to see if anything develops with that situation. With the squad struggling, something tells me one of those two will be on their way out sooner or later. Maybe both.

New Jersey 110, L.A. Clippers 96

Here’s a crazy fact: The Nets are the second best team in the Atlantic division. Yeah, I don’t know. Brook Lopez led the team with 24, and Jordan Farmar scored 15 and distributed 12 dimes off the bench. For the Clippers, Eric Gordon dropped 30 in the loss, and my fantasy team is greatly appreciative. Wait, one more crazy fact: New Jersey shot 59.7 percent (43-72) from the field, and 94.7 percent (18-19) from the line. That, SLAM Fam, is how you win basketball games in the National Basketball Association. Or so I’m told.

Dallas 98, New Orleans 95

This had to happen eventually. Behind their roaring home crowd, the Mavs were the NBA’s first to take down the Hornets—and now zero undefeated squads remain. Jason Terry had both a game-high 26 points and a go-ahead bucket with 33 seconds, and Dirk Nowitzki went for 25 and 10 and had a few big baskets of his own. Most importantly, though, is that we’ve officially established this: The West is really, really competitive, and will be awesome to watch unfold come playoff time. You already knew that? Damn. Moving on.

Oklahoma City 115, Utah 108

For weeks I’ve been saying that if the Thunder want a legit shot at taking down the best teams in their conference, they’ll need a third player to step up alongside Russell Westbrook (22 points, 7 assists) and Kevin Durant (30 points, 6 rebounds, 4 dimes). OK, Serge Ibaka (22 points, 11 boards). I see you. OKC jumped ahead in this one, and though Deron Williams (31 points, 11 dimes) and Co. tried and started to get back ahead, it just wasn’t going down like that. The whole go-down-and-try-to-pull-off-the-miraculous-comeback thing works sometimes, but is always dangerous. Also: Oklahoma City shot 50.7 percent, while Utah shot 50.6 percent, meaning this one was ultimately decided by .1 percent. Math!

Phoenix 100, Denver 94

Everyone’s favorite long-range shooters won, somehow, despite hitting only four out of 20 threes. Weird night. Hakim Warrick led the Suns with 21 (see, told you it was weird), while group leader Steve Nash dropped 15 and dished 7. Denver actually had some noteworthy stats—well, just one: Carmelo Anthony scored 20 but feasted on Phoenix’s Robin Lopez-less interior and grabbed 22 rebounds. But they lost, so you know, there’s that. This game was close towards the end, but the Suns made some clutch buckets and got some needed stops, enabling them to pull this one out. Record-wise, both of these two remain in the middle of the pack, with Phoenix moving to 6-4 and Denver falling to 5-5.

Performance of the Night: Nothing’s really jumping out, so I’m going with this: Michael Vick: 333 passing yards, 4 passing td’s, 80 rushing yards, 2 rushing td’s. As a Giants fan, this makes me mad, but as a human being fan, this makes me happy. No comment on which I consider to be more important. And yeah, I realize this isn’t hoops-related, but we’ll let football take the forefront for once—if only because the NBA dominates the rest of the week and most Mondays too. If this gets me fired, it’s been a pleasure, y’all. In my memory, treat the next weekday Post Up writer with nothing but disrespect and negative comments. Thanks!
Moment of the Night: (Update: Check the video below.) Devin Harris fouled Blake Griffin by doing essentially what the Skins couldn’t to Vick: tackling him to the ground. The flagrant sent the rook to down hard and earned the Net an ejection. Definitely a scary moment, especially after all Blake’s gone through to get himself into the League, but he popped up and was alright. No word yet on a potential suspension/fine for Harris, but both are pretty strong possibilities.

Yeah, how about them shaggy haired (well not right now), lanky Germans in the Nba?

Stephen Jackson postgame quote: “I know we got the win, but 40+ minutes is really too much for myself and Gerald”

  • http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/ Anthony

The West is very competitive indeed, Dallas, Phoenix, Utah, San Antonio, New Orleans, OKC are all possible 50wins teams. Don’t know if Golden State will things up because they are the surprise team of the pack. Denver, Houston, Portland are diagnosticated as “unknown status” but i can see any of them make a huge run later on. A west coast trip for any East team wont be a walk in the park.

“As a Giants fan, this makes me mad, but as a human being fan, this makes me happy” The Human Beings? You go to Greendale, Adam?

  • http://slamonline.com Krishan

Sota stringing a couple of good games, even though they’re losses, will only do them good. Ibaka is a beast, freeserge!

Thank you Krishan! The Greendale/Community reference just made my day. The Human Being? Best. Mascot. Ever. That Michael Vick guy is pretty good, though.

  • http://www.google.com/news BETCATS

I am now a believer in the Beasley for All-Star movement. But i am happy we could come back from being down 5 with 2:46 left to winning the game. We are getting back on the right track.

  • jahmai

Mike Vick was a beast! MV7 for MVP. KD had another bad shooting night, going 6-18 and 2-8 from 3pt range. Russ is looking unstoppable so far this season and Ibaka’s mid-range game is looking suprisingly smooth. Once KD gets hot, OKC will be really, really good.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

Eagles Crushed Washington…I couldnt watch after the first half. Vick looked like the best QB I have ever seen out there that game. Passing from the pocket for crazy long bombs, running when the defense got loose…it was a thing of grotesque beauty.

Carmelo grabbing 22 somehow does not impress me. Gawd! Love’s 31 got me jaded.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’ve only talked about Michael Beasley being restricted in the Heat system since Day 1. It was only a matter of time before the dude blew up and shut up the ig’nats that pollute everyday basketball conversations.

  • Bruno

great choice going with Michael Vick for perfomance of the night

  • JTaylor21

MVick is that dude and I’m glad he is back. Also F*CK peta and every dog-loving imbecile, dogs are not human and should not be put on the same pedestal. It’s only a crime when a black/brown man fights dogs but people hunt deer and other animals everday and it’s legal. Boy, don’t you just love that american justice system. Freedom and justice for all my a**!

  • jahmai

Mike b’easy is playing some very good basketball these last couple of games, I’m happy for him. I hope Kurt Rambis recognizes Beasly is now the go-to guy for the wolves, because Beas will respond. At first I thought minnesota wouldn’t work because beasly needs to play pf and Love is already their starting pf, but sf is actually working out very well, and his mid-range game is just great to watch.

  • dmoore

that foul on griffin would have been an ordinary personal foul before today’s “soft” era, harris went for the ball and did a hard foul to not let him get the easy bucket

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

Watching Allen Iverson’s 1st game w. his new team on Eurosport 2. he looks quite ok out there, not forcing shots, trying to penetrate and dish.
Good opponent in Hemofarm, team that went far in the Eurocup last year. A.I’s playing the 2 (already seems like his coach is adapting to him, 6 foot SG’s don’t play on top Eurocup teams usually)

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

And A.I. just scored his first 3 points for Besiktas mid 2nd qtr. 3 point play and a roar from the turkish home fans.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Keep us posted please, Dark.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

@JTaylor21. I’m struggling to find words that I can post here. Comparing dog fighting to hunting is just ignorant. I can only hope that you and every dog fight supporter are taken one by one, beaten and forced to fight to the death. Oh yeah. And if you are not killed by your opponent you are killed for losing anyway.

  • http://gmail dirty frank

^for the record. I’m not a fan of hunting for sport to to compare it to forcing ANY animal to fight to the death is beyond ignorant.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

@Dark — I’m streaming the game right now, just wondering, is there a site has shows a live boxscore?

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

I’ll try, Teddy. But it’s 2am here in Asia & i might not be able to stay awake. DVR’ing though, should be able to post more tomorrow.
@tealish: sorry, watching on tv, no clue about the game’s online status. But Eurocup has a Site, not sure if they have live updates. Sorry.

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

Whoops, i mistook Hemofarm for Red Star Belgrade, my bad. Red Star had a solid eurocup season last year, Hemofarm was rubbish really. Mixed them up cause one of my favorite Euroballers plays there, Milan Macvan, Serbian nationalteam player who plays with 2 of Red Star’s former studs (Bjelica and Keselj) there.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Dark just typed rubbish. I love it.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

I was wondering what happened to devin for farmar to put up those stats, now we know. Fig man(like hack man), you should include blocks and steals in your recaps. Vick is back.

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

Whoops, after leading by 10 at halftime, Besiktas came out flat and the lead dropped to 3 pts within 3 minutes. Arena, which was LOUD earlier, i very quiet now. And Hemofarm is feeding their post beast, Macvan. Iverson watch: 5pts, 1-5 FG%, 3-3FT% and not at all the focal point on offense…. Aaand as i just typed that, he hits a 3, then gets called for a foul (clean rip!) then starts complaining to the refs…crowd’s jeering at the ref, it’s a parté up in there now.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

So this is what it’s come to….AI getting 8 pts through 3 quarters in Turkey. Damn. I was thinking he go for his and get about 40 in his first game. Guess not.

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

And A.I. is in the house, 2nd three in a row after the ref’s call, then barking at his teammates to play D.
One thing that is obvious, his 1st step isn’t killing the opposing guards, they stay in front of him quite well.

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

E, he hasn’t played through any of the 1st three quarters, seems the coach is bringing him on slowly. Shot looks great though.

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

@E: yeah when i’m tired, my british youth flows into my vocabulary.. Rubbish, great word.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Then that really sucks.

  • add

    the eagles game was insane

  • http://www.fiba.vom Darksaber

69:63 for Besiktas, end of the 3rd, AI was on the bench the last 3 mins, grim expression on his face (indigestion? Unhappy with mins? Who knows)
I needs mah sleep, night peeps.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

AI finally forced a shot on the baseline there. Hopefully he finishes the game off strong with a solid 4th.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Four point play for Ivy!

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

5 min left, Besiktas up 16.
    Lose by 3. Amazing…

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

Michael Vick is the only person in the game of sports who I root to have a career ending injury every game he plays. Roethlisberger is close second though.

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

Allen Iverson shot… at the buzzerrrrrr oh miss. Damn.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    WoW Jukai

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

Sorry. I don’t really think either of them have paid for their crimes, and the fact that they are blessed to make such lucrative money while being such terrible human beings really is an f-you to the world.

  • http://www.twitter.com/TheDiesel Anton

LaGarette Blount is the Blake Griffin of the NFL. Oregon, stand up!

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

Jukai – you don’t think two years in jail is paying for your crime? I’m right there with you on Big Ben, but Vick paid for his crime and then some. There are people who’ve killed human beings and don’t get that much time.

  • Michael

Jtaylor you get dumber by the day dude, co sign everything dirty frank said. f*ck u and Michael Vick, i hope u two have to fight each other to the death.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Jukai, wtf! Vick served two years in a fed pen for dog fighting. U realize there are many drunk drivers who kill ppl who get way less than that. There are ppl who dont take care of their kids who srs cant really do anything about. Domestic abuse, etc. Sure, dog fighting is wrong, but vick paid the price with his freedom, he proly overpaid. Get some perspective.

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

If there are drunk drivers who have killed people and get less than two years, that is a serious flaw in our system, since vehicular manslaughter is generally 3-15 years and is worse if one is drunk.
This isn’t a case of a guy beating a dog to death. He made a business out of torturing and killing dozens of dogs. I mean, he funded the damn thing.
Sorry, I don’t really think he paid the price. A year and a half ain’t much time.
Saying people do this and that don’t change my opinion much, I’d feel the same for them.

  • rob

it makes me mad some of the stupid things people do in this league. this is why i hate guys like devin harris. why a lil punk like that gonna try to take down blake griffin especially when your in the 2nd quarter, while your winning? makes no sense. let him score and move on to the next one. that wasnt a winning play. doesnt he know what blake went through to get into this league? how would you like it if you broke away for a layup and i undercutted you so u could fall and have a career ending knee injury huh?!

  • rob

    lol. jukai is closed minded

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

M Vick has served enough time. I was glad to see him dominate yesterday. In fact, I may be more of a fan now than before in his ATL days.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Mike Vick definitely didn’t “overpay,” Tarzan. And co-sign Jukai.
And wow, JTaylor with the stupidest f*cking comment I’ve ever seen. SMH. And by the looks of it, you don’t even know what dog fighting is–Mike Vick wasn’t sent to prison for fighting against a dog… Idiot. And what does it have to do with race? Are you implying only black people do sh!t like that?
I H@TE, and I mean I REALLY f*cking h@te when people justify certain crimes because other, completely unrelated crimes/acts are seen in a different light.
“Dog-loving imbecile”? Get the f*ck out of here. Because of course humans are the supreme beings of the planet–you know, humans who put other humans in cages and slaughter each other.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I don’t see what point you’re trying to make, Tarzan. Drunk driving is a heinous crime that should be punished–so that means torturing dogs is okay, and should be dealt with lighter? There’s a serious problem with that logic.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

If you really feel that serving two years in prison for dog fighting isn’t enough is funny. Vick is not even one of the top dog fighters. Dog fighting has been happening for years where I am from. Also alot of people kill squirrel, deer and other animals for fun. WHERE IS PETA THEN. I feel you should only hunt animals if you are going to eat them, not for fun. What Vick did was wrong, but its a dog. There are thousands of dogs put down daily at animal shelters because no one wants them. Vick punishment was too much. Big Ben got off, because the police gave him a pass. Also Stallworth and JR Smith are the ones that should have PAIDED. They played a part in a HUMAN BEING dieing. Dogs are not human, they are just domesticated animals, but again dog fighting can be considered wrong, but VICK grew up seeing this everyday and the Police in his town, thought it wasn’t a big deal, so he started himself. Vick was made a scapegoat, that is why I AM LOVING HIM KILL OTHER TEAMS. IF VICK CONTINUES TO WIN HE IS MVP. LOL TO ALL THE HATERS, LIKE YOU, I KNOW YOU ARE PERFECT BUT KNOW A MAN BEFORE YOU COUNT HIM OUT. BOOK IT

  • The Fresh Prince of Nsam

It’s strange that in the western side of the world, some people care more about animals than human beings

  • http://sdfjlkf.com Jukai

“Also Stallworth and JR Smith are the ones that should have PAIDED. They played a part in a HUMAN BEING dieing.”
I swear, half the reason The Seed is kept around is because of sentences like the above.
If I ever wind up in a court of law, I hope I’m allowed to cite totally irrelevant cases and show how, because THESE guys got off unfairly, I should get off unfairly for mine too.
Vick was one of the ‘top-dogs’ in dog fighting. He was financing an entire ring of illegal dog fighting.
And Stallworth was the biggest f*cking sh*tscam in human history. Dude kills someone when drunk and he gets 30 days in jail… that’s just ridiculous. I don’t care if someone ran out infront of you, if you’re driving drunk and you kill someone, you don’t just get 30 days. He’s another person I’m angry at. JR Smith is a bad human being all together.
But how does Stallworth and JR Smith’s crime absolve Michael Vick?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’ll say this: Dogs have never put each other or other animals in cages. This ridiculous notion that humans are some sort of saintly, supreme and moral beings is f*cking misguided as it is annoying and just flat out maddening. Again, I have no clue why we are even comparing human beings and animals in the first place–Vick’s crime was despicable REGARDLESS.
But back to the topic at hand: Dogfighting has NOTHING TO DO WITH STALLWORTH OR WHOEVER ELSE GOT OFF WITH A F*CKING CRIMINAL OFFENSE. Goodness it’s a f*cking miracle how half of you past high school. Cot dammit. If you can’t see how torturing ONE animal, let alone DOZENS OF THEM is completely wrong, then you don’t deserve to call yourself a f*cking human.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I find it really frustrating, and at the same time almost comical that people feel somehow threatened whenever animal rights, minority rights, female rights, or g@y rights–anything along those lines–is brought up.
Why must people bring up the fact that animals aren’t human as a deterrent to animal rights? HOW THE F*CK IS THAT EVEN AN ARGUMENT?! It’s exactly like men being up in arms about feminism and the feminist movement, or straight people feeling threatened by homosexuality. F*CK OFF WITH THAT BULLSH!T.

  • http://www.slamonline melvin ely

    Salut, teddy.

  • Michael

WTF does someone drink driving and killing someone have to do with Michael Vick? Im not saying he should of got longer but just cause he went to jail doesnt mean i have to be overjoyed hes out there tearing up the NFL. Dude was running dog fights, thats a despicable thing to do, i try to never wish bad upon a person but if his career ended tomorrow I wouldnt give a f*ck.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-confidential/ Diesel

I don’t know about anyone else’s comment, but mine was a direct response to Jukai’s comment that Vick hasn’t paid his dues. All I’m saying is 2 years in jail is paying your dues. Unless you’ve actually been in prison, you can’t just scoff at 2 years of your life gone…in that atmosphere. That’s my only point. You don’t have to support him playing, you don’t have to root for him, you don’t have to forgive him. But the guy paid for his crime.

  • Clyde

Ahahaha, that Clothesline made my day, thank you Devin Harris.
