The Hawks May Look To Move J-Smoove

After extending Al Horford to the tune of 5 years, $60 million, speculation is growing that the Hawks will want to clear some salary before the summer. Chad Ford writes: “Clearly the Hawks love Horford and the toughness he brings to their front line, but can they really afford him after giving more than $100 million to Joe Johnson this summer? Several GMs believe the Hawks won’t be able to keep Johnson ($18.5 million in 2011-12), Josh Smith ($12.5 million in 2011-12), Marvin Williams ($8 million in 2011-12) and Horford ($12 million in 2011-12) together past this season for financial reasons. While Horford’s new salary won’t push the Hawks into the luxury tax, it will put them very close. The move means they won’t be able to afford to re-sign Jamal Crawford, or replace him with a similar salaried player next season, without incurring the tax. That situation is already leading to speculation that GM Rick Sund may be forced to put Smith on the market soon. Sund briefly flirted with trading Smith last summer, before pulling back. While no one is claiming he’s been made available yet, a number of GMs around the league expect his name to be in the mix by the February trade deadline. Williams would be the Hawks’ first choice to move, but he didn’t get a lot of bites when he was available this summer. That could push them to see what they can get for Smith.”

trade him to okc for jeff green.. smith would be great with the thunder

  • Yesse

I agree with you, C. Great idea.

  • Yann Blavec

    Keep him.

  • underdog

Signing JJ for that much money was a mistake.

  • AP

If you read today’s works Ziller criticizes Ford and shows why trading J. Smith is not a good idea: http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/11/02/the-works-making-nic-batum-fit-mike-conleys-coup/

  • JTaylor21

Cantrell, that sounds like a good idea but how does that help the Hawks because they already have an underachieving SF in Marv. They should trade him for a center to relieve AL of having to guard bigger players every game.

  • Abaci

Couldnt agree more C_cantrell, the thunder were the first team that came to my mind

  • Stepfan

@c_cantrell I love Jeff Green go Hoyas but that would be a good look for the Thunder.

  • kickflip

but who has a center that is worth trading for in the catergory of josh smith??and who would, if they have such a center, give him away??

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Jeff Green is at the end of his rookie contract and wants a deal similar to what Josh Smith currently has. If they traded for him, they would either have to pay him or let him walk, which would mean they were getting nothing for their second best player. That doesn’t make sense.

Re-signing Marvin Williams was probably the biggest mistake the Hawks since drafting Marvin Williams

  • CAPTAIN HINDSIGHT

HAWKS SHOULD NOT HAVE SIGNED JOHNSON TO THE MAX

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Josh Smith for Loul Deng. Ha ha, and I just posted on another thread that I hope last night’s performance by Deng can dead some of that “trade Deng” talk, but I would love it if the Bulls had J-Smoove. If he can slife to the 3, with him, Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson and Omer Asik hold things down in the paint defensively, we’d be a defensive monster.

  • Heals

That’s a shame as early on he looks like he has expanded his game to accompany his new Captain status…

  • bnets

here come the knicks fans probably hahah

  • mister8

Gortat would be nice on the hawks….,Orlando would have to throw in a guy like anderson and maybe more though. Don’t know about the salaries though.

  • max

to the mavs for chandler and marion?

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

He wont get traded. Makes no sense; there is no centers who are at Smith’s talent level who would be traded, and there’s no other positional weakness that the Hawks have.

  • Jowo

I blame overrated Joe, and good for nothing Rick Sund for all the financial problems surrounding the Hawks. Josh Smith needs to stay and Joe and Marvin need to go. GO HAWKS, LETS DESTROY TO SILLY CAVS TONIGHT.

    ….the house Mike Woodson built….slowly tumbling down….

  • Retrobat

@Jayo – That’s an awful trade for the clips. Why would they want Iggy AND Eric Gordon on the same team? And, no one is going to trade Jrue Holiday for an old Baron Davis. Plus, no real benefit for Atlanta other than salary coming off the books.

  • http://google c_cantrell

jtalor i dont really see them gettin a decent big man for him n it really wouldnt help the hawks any but it would give them more cap space which in turn could help them next offseason if they cant get a decent big this season

  • http://mail.google.com Jayo

@ Retrobat. Thanks for the response. I can see Iggy playing the small forward position for the Clips. But you do have a point on Davis. The clips could give up the 1st round draft pick Minny owes them.

The Hawks get Hawes who could develop as a starter allowing Horford to move to the PF spot and they get the Georgia Tech young SF in Thad Young.

  • paul lewis

Put J-smooth in OKC or ORL he way better than kristic and rashard lewis

  • Kwame

trade whole cavs team for j-smoove

  • http://www.youtube.com/officerbarbrady what

More pointless national media speculation. Smoove ain’t going anywhere. If anyone gets traded it will be Jamal Crawford or Marvin Williams.

  • dma

^ @What.. why would they trade Jamal Crawford? This is the last year of his contract, and has little to no financial impact. And nobody wants Marvin Williams. If they could find someone to take JJ this summer, I’m sure they’d be all for it. And trading for Jeff Green would make no sense, as already pointed out, he’d be resigned this summer and they’d be in the same situation, with a far inferior player. Now I could see a trade with NJ for Favors, or some other team that’s under the cap for a rookie big in return.

  • Mr. Bamboo

i can see crawford and a pick being moved for rudy Fernandez and joel prizbilla.
move marvin williams for Andris Biedrins.
Josh Smith For Jeff Green and Nick Collison and mulitple picks

  • James

Hawks should trade Josh Smith and Jamal Crawford to the Nuggets for Carmelo Anthony and J.R. Smith.

  • no id

I don’t even post that much n e more but that’s the dumbest rumor I’ve heard from the national media..real hawks fan that truly follow them know that’s not gonna happen..dumb rumors started by national media..follow http://www.ajc.com to know the real

  • NAh

too bad that would NEVER HAPPEN. not to mention it would make the hawks worse as a team and the nuggets too. Melo and JJ will clash. they are both first option on their respective teams. and require a certain amount of shots to play effectively. For example its like when AI and Melo played together they could score a lot but melo averaged less shots than AI….they clashed. and Jr is good to have…but they have crawford and jj in the back court so he wont get much time.

  • NAh

And what will Josh Smith and Crawford do for the nuggets….nothing they trade their best player for a guy that cant shoot, and a guy that replaces jr……stupid trade

  • http://www.youtube.com/officerbarbrady what

They would trade Crawford because they can’t possibly hope to win in the playoffs with Zaza Pachulia as Horford’s backup, and they drafted a guy in the first round who has exactly the same game (and name) as Crawford and is supposed to be his long term replacement. Jamal Crawford is not part of the Hawks’ long term plans.

  • http://www.youtube.com/officerbarbrady what

@James — no way they make that trade without getting the Nuggets to throw in Nene. They are not going to leave themselves with Zaza starting at center.

  • NAh

Thats what im saying they got a rookie and jj. Jr wont fit in well, he will be like rudy from portland… Not really in the rotation. The nuggets wont part with nene unless they upgrade for a guy like brook lopez

  • http://twitter.com/nbatalkandkicks Eduardo

I can see Dallas making a really good offer for him.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Ree Roe

As a Hawks fan, Josh ain’t gettin traded for Jeff Green. Are y’all serious? Josh is our ONLY shot blocking threat & our best passing big man. Not to mention how well he runs the floor on the break. The only way we trade Smoove is if we get an All Star caliber SF or C in return. I’d much rather trade Marvin Williams & Jamal for a true center

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

The Hawks are making it rain!

  • http://google c_cantrell

but still yal know josh smith on okc would be pretty dope

  • giogolo

as ive commented during the JJ signing post months ago. this was one bad business move. and so there it is. i wonder why these GMs keep their jobs. so much for a promising line-up.

  • http://google c_cantrell

thinkin bout trading jeff green to atl for josh smith on my 2k11.. my thunder would be rockin then
