Charles Oakley Joins the Bobcats; Baron Davis Next?

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

I suppose the big news out of Charlotte yesterday is that the team has a new head coach, and Larry Brown is a free agent once again. That’s all fine and well for this mess of a squad.

What truly matters though, is that Charles Oakley has an NBA gig again. He will join his best bud Michael Jordan as a member of the Bobcats’ coaching staff (he has no coaching experience, but that’s irrelevant right now. Oak is back, baby!)

MJ isn’t done wheeling and dealing; there are reports that he’s looking to transform his roster rather dramatically. Yahoo! and FanHouse have the rumors:

League sources told FanHouse that Jordan has discussed a trade that would send beloved small forward Gerald Wallace to Portland with center DeSagana Diop and point guard D.J. Augustin in exchange for center Marcus Camby and point guard Andre Miller. And while the Blazers are exploring a litany of their own options and don’t appear eager to do the deal as of now, the discussion that is one of many being had by the Bobcats reveals plenty about the sort of the on-court changes Jordan has in mind for his club.

He wants a point guard not named D.J. Augustin who comes with a veteran’s resume and a veteran big man who produces on both ends of the floor. But it’s the final prerequisite that is by far the most problematic for most scenarios being considered, as he wants to significantly cut future salary just in time for the new landscape that will come with a new collective bargaining agreement.

Silas is a long way removed from the NBA – and longer from his late 1990s success in Charlotte. And if bringing back Silas isn’t retro enough for everyone, how about Silas’ old Hornets point guard, Baron Davis? Jordan is considering a trade proposal that would send Augustin, DeSagana Diop and Matt Carroll to the Los Angeles Clippers for Davis, a league source told Yahoo! Sports. The Clippers have desperately tried to trade Davis and have included him in proposals with center Chris Kaman.

Whoever ends up joining the team better be prepared to hustle for the demanding head coach and team owner.

But even more importantly, they should pay up on time whenever they lose during those high-stakes dice games. Oak doesn’t usually ask twice about a gambling debt.

oh mann i just read the article about oakhead on the link above. The one about him hoe’n tyrone hill. damn thats classic

Why does MJ want Baron Davis? The guy is another injury away from ending his career.

  • Jer dawg

Larry Brown is a lousy bastard of a coach & human being. Quitting everywhere he goes. Why deal with his baggage? He ruins things faster than he builds it. Better coach than popvich? Phil Jackson? Pat Riley? He wears out his welcome and steals $$$ from teams. “playing the right way” is a load of crap. He sure doesn’t play the right way in his respective field. I expect nothing from Bobcats. I’m in LA & Clippers have been crap for the longest time. We finally have excitement and noise at Clipper games. LA is being known for something other than mediocrity and boredom! Keep Baron Davis around.the clippers don’t owe any luxury taxes anyway.

LB was fired, no bones about it. As a Bobcats fan all I can say is things are uneasy in LolCat land. On one hand we might get treated to offense that resembles something past the 1950s, on the other we might have our “genius” FO and owner wheel and deal us into the East’s version of the Clippers.

  • obo

captain jack and b diddy reunited – o man please make that happen!!!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Would be great for Portland.. Very happy for Oakley, now he needs his jersey retired in NY..(though this is a very old pic of him, his hair is all grey now).. I loved watching Oak as a player, and he is a great guy.. I dont know him personaly, but is a facebook friend and always takes time outta his day to ansewer fans questions, I have even sent and recieved inbox stuff with him, unlike most NBAers who post what they have to say, and then ignore all comments..

  • barnabusb

Larry Brown could have had a good thing in Detroit and retired on top. Instead he was doing job interviews while the Pistons were in the finals! WTF.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Why would the Blazers want Gerald Wallace?

  • JTaylor21

Somewhere barkley is drowning in his tears.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@AllenP- to start at small forward..

  • http://screwjams.tumblr.com cramzy

so…mike has to give Chuck a GM job now right?!

  • http://www.teesrus.ecrater.com Go Green

Jordan better make some moves fast to save this season. I like camby coming in and wallace leaving.
    Kobe fans check out http://www.teesrus.ecrater.com/p/9572178/kobe

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Don’t they have Batum?

  • bails1

Gerald Wallace is better than Batum. Cmon seriously. If that has to be explained you’re on the wrong site.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Yeah, but u can never have too many good players (unless your Miami j/k).. Batum has been coming off the bench lately anyway and starting Matthews at the 3, in this case Matthews could come off the bench at the 2 and Batum at the 3.. Losing Miller would hurt because Portland isnt very deep at that position.. I don’t really like the idea of Roy playing point..

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

I think what Allenp is getting at is cost/production in regards to Batum vs Wallace. Wallace isn’t so much better than Batum to make up for that contract. Besides, with Portland voodoo injury curse, would you really want to roll the dice with a guy nicknamed “Crash”.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Batum has been great, and only getting better, he’s a good piece to have for the future, Wallace is great for the now..

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

    I hear you, Boss

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

I hear you, Boss. But I think this will just add to the chorus of whining about PT from Portland’s perimeter players if they bench Matthews/Batum. Dre and Camby are much more tradeable than Crash so I don’t think they should pull the trigger on this deal.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

    Haha, good point Huey..

  • Hammer

If coach nate doesn’t come back next yr 2 p-town,management should @ least try 2 get brown. Hurts 2 say it,but let the rebuilding begin n portland

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@ Hammer, I know your from the area too, I think all of us Blazer fans really want to hold on to the thought of Oden coming back “next year” (again) and just being an unstoppable force under the rim.. Not sure its time to rebuild, but if we did get Wallace, it would take alot of pressure off Roy to having to do it all.. Still need depth at pg, maybe with the Hornets pick this summer we can pick up a “Bayless” type back-up.. (Boneheaded trade IMO)

  • http://www.solecollector.com NDP

Interesting trade for the Blazers. Could BRoy at 1, Wes at 2, Crash at 3 actually work? I don’t entirely hate that idea. For the Bobcats, they’d be a more veteran team overnight and also slash some payroll w/ Andre’s non-guaranteed last year. Could be a nice trade for both. Bobcats have no business dealing w/ the Clippers and hoping for a re-energized Baron. Too big a gamble.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

La huey feels me. This ain’t 2k it is real life and contracts cost real money. Wallace had peaked and some would say he s declining. He coats more can’t shoot as well and really isn’t a leader. Why trade canny and your point giant d who is making aldridge look great for wallace and auguatin. I thought it was obvious but I guess I am going to have spell stuff out now on the site.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Excuse the typos on my phone.

  • http://www.need4sheed.com Tarzan Cooper

Portland will be mediocre at best until roys contract runs out…….. …. ….Bobcats need to sit tight and hope to get kyrie or selby…… And trade away crash or jack, but not for anotther high priced vet

  • Omar

Neither of those trade make a lick of sense for Charlotte.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

@ Allen P, I wasn’t arguing with you, honestly as far as the deal- I could take it or leave it.. I would hate to lose Miller and replace him with DJ, but in Wallace, we would be getting another all star.. I dont like most of Portlands trades lately begining with Travis Outlaw..

  • Epic Win

Heck yeah! Oak is gonna Tyronne Hill/Jeff Mcinnis some of those soft a*s Bobkitty players.

  • http://google c_cantrell

    and the bobcats.. lose.. again

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    LOL @ Epic Win.

Charles Oakley + Tyrus Thomas = 2 dudes 1 ball

  • http://slamonline.com Ghost

Thought this was inevitable, well done me.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    MJ sucks as an owner.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

That Portland trade is flat-out dumb for the Cats. Makes sense for Portland, though – only Wallace could add an air of unpredictability to the Blazers injured list. “Compound concussion?! Wtf?!”

  • mmontano2012

This is sad…solely because of the fact that DJ Augustin is part of the Jordan team.

  • 6marjons

mj realluy cant run a franchise

  • Epic Win

    you realluy can’t spell

  • ish

now i see why AI was always gettin at LB. he’s full of crap with all that”play the game the right way” bull. maybe he should learn to coach the right way. but he keeps getting jobs from these stupid GMs who dont know any better. i mean, what, isnt he clloecting money from like three teams at one time? lol.

  • dma

If bobcats still had Morrison, I’d trade Brandon Roy for him right now.

  • thecjrja

wow, are you kidding me? the corpse is alive

  • dsleepy

that linked article killed me. charles oakley = straight gangsta.
