Could Three-Team Deal Affect Carmelo?

And Joe Smith makes NBA history.

by Ryne Nelson

Yesterday’s three-team deal could have big implications in the Carmelo Anthony sweepstakes. Or it could mean next to nothing…

But, before we go further, let’s review the deal’s particulars, as first reported by Yahoo!‘s Adrian Wojnarowski:

The New Jersey Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets have agreed in principle on a three-way trade that will send Terrence Williams to Houston, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic and a 2012 first-round pick from Houston will go to New Jersey. Nets forward Joe Smith will join the Lakers, who also will send their 2011 first-round pick to New Jersey. In an effort to create luxury-tax savings by trading Vujacic’s $5.5 million salary for Smith’s $1.35 million, the Lakers were willing to include their first-round pick.

Here’s a crude break down:

Nets: Sasha Vujacic + Lakers’ 2011 first round pick + Houston’s 2012 first round pick (lottery protected)
Rockets: Terrence Williams
Lakers: Joe Smith

The Nets now have assets: five first round picks through 2012 (two are lottery protected), Vujacic’s $5,475,113 expiring contact, and the No. 3 pick in last June’s Draft, Derrick Favors.

But, as the Nets learned over the summer, giving up players for a non-guarantee is not smart. LeBron took his talents to South Beach. Carmelo could just as easily take his to the Nets’ rival across the Hudson.

Looking at the bright side… even if the Nets are unable to acquire Anthony, they can now offer a very lucrative deal to a future marquee free agent.

Fun Fact: While Vujacic and Williams will be putting on just their second jerseys of their career, Smith will be donning his 12th (besting Jimmy Jackson’s NBA record 11).

What do you mean could the three-team deal affect Carmelo? I thought the whole purpose of the deal was so that they could offer more draft picks to obtain Melo. Although I doubt he’ll stay…

^they could maybe get some good quality players with these picks and just keep them instead of trading them off and build a young team up from ground zero

The Nets won’t give up their future if Melo doesn’t agree pre-trade to resign. But those 5 draft picks make New Jersey a player for every single trade on the market. They could end up with any player on the trading block

Joe Smith must be so happy right now. From the worst team in the east to one of the contenders on the west. On the other hand, I hope T-Will prove NJ wrong.

The Rockets have alot of nice trade pieces as well. I don’t see them keeping lee, martin, and williams

Hard to believe that Joe Smith, a former #1 pick is about to be on his 12th NBA team in his career.

  • unrel

i’m sad to see sasha go..

  • http://google c_cantrell

    ^unrel..
    wth for?

  • biged

    cosign c_cantrell….
dude was averaging 1.8 points a game. We don’t need him. on the other hand idk if I agree with giving up a first round draft pick too, should’ve gave them a second round… I guess I’ll be ok with it once we win the ‘ship.

  • http://google c_cantrell

^yeah man whats it matter, lakers are goin to the finals most likely with or without a 1st rounder anyways lol

  • price

I’m a huge Laker fan. I’ll miss Sasha cause every time he’s been interviewed he’s hilarious.
I dont see any gain of giving up a first rounder when they have been able to grab talent deep in the draft (Fisher, Van Exel, Caracter, M. Gasol) for old ass Joe Smith. I know Bynum’s still out but Joe Smith?!

@biged doesnt matter how much he averages though he’s been capable of hitting that trey when they need it.

  • http://google c_cantrell

^sasha was of no importance to the lakers.. thus the reason he is now gone

  • unrel

sasha played his part.. we all know he could shoot.. but there’s no way he’s breaking the rotation.. he never complained about minutes or his role.. and always put blame on himself.. as a teammate.. he didn’t rock the boat.. and he’s scrappy and gets under people’s skin.. outside of skill level, the way laker fans hated danny ainge.. is the same way the world hates sasha.. don’t forget he closed games in 2008.. yes ray-ray blew by him.. but there was a reason he closed games in 2008.. he’s not a bum.. just not good enough to crack the laker rotation…

  • http://google c_cantrell

he didnt complain about his minutes cause he knew he was lucky to even be in the nba to begin with lol.. and there is also a reason why he is not with the lakers anymore also.. wether you want to accept that or not.. oh and by the way dont ever compare sasha to danny ainge again.. it just shows a lack of knowledge on your part lil buddy

  • biged

    @price
we have Shannon brown and the killer B’s for that now. Plus we can’t wait until the draft. The Lakers guard rotation is very good, all they doing now is making their front court rotation as good. Come playoffs we gonna have Bynum, ratlif, smith, characters, gasol, odom; six guys that can play down low against anyone. Name me another team that is that deep ( maybe celtics…maybe)

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp
